hhhhhhmmmmmmmm ........... wonder what it is.

I had that happen to me a couple months back..I would get up and walk around and the noise would go away. Back in bed and it came right back. For about a week I went through this. Finally, I had everyone in the house looking for the source. We all heard it and it went away once out of my bedroom. Baffled after 2 weeks, I gave up and dealt with it. One night a crash happened in my daughters room and I ran upstairs and her fan had fallen over so i turned it off and put it upright and went to bed....hmmmm no humming when I layed down. Being the smart person I am I went back up and turned it on. Well lo and behold I finally found the source. The fan was sitting on her floor directly above my bed and you could only hear it in that one spot.

The buzz created by the security systems at doors with walk through security systems drive me crazy -- it is a high pitched whistle to me. 

My daughter, son, and I hear radar guns because it sounds like a very fine high whistle. 

These sounds make our heads hurt because you can't shut it off and you can't avoid it.  I feel for these folks.

When it is one person then it is suspect when it is a whole village and the source can not be logically identified then it needs to be documented and taken seriously.

Its the devil and he's comin after souls!!

When I was a kid we had the sound of sawing wood with a hand saw going all time. It wasn't something that would cause you to miss sleep but we didn't know what it was. Then we figured it out, the guy behind us had a leopard in a cage in his backyard.

 Did any of the other locations that had this hum find the source? Especially the one in Taos, NM.

 i live in the netherlands, in Eindhoven. i am born and raised here. 44 years old now. in 1989 i bought a house, and all was well. in 1999 my husband and i went to sleep one night, and i asked annoyed what that sound was suddenly. i thought someone was outside working a kind of generator or something like that. i never ever heard that sound before.

my husband could not hear it. however, i know it is real. because i hear it only at night, but not when i am on certain locations on vacation. it starts abruptly and ends the same. one time the sound was so loud, i thought my head would explode. and THEN my husband , asked what strange sound it was, HE was hearing !!! so, at THAT time he really DID hear the sound!!! so it was real !

i think it is a manmade sound. why else would it start and stop? why else is it only to be heard on places where lot's of people (a city) are living and working together.

i did NOT ever hear it in disneyland paris or disneyworld orlando. but when i went on vacation in spain, in a busy city, i did hear it. But in greece,  on crete, less populated, i did not hear it.

another thing that convinces me that it is real: the baby of the neighbours start crying SECONDS after the sound starts, altho he can not speak or hear from anyone, that there should be anything to be heard.

i am not quite sure if it is indeed a SOUND, though. it could very well be a very low resonating vibration, that is conceived as a sound.

i went scouting for the sound several times, in the middle of the night. but i never could find the source. i mailed to our county "government" but they simply advised me to move. duh... i just bought the house 1 year before the hum started!

maybe it has something to do with the supporting power towers for the mobile phones, because there are more and more complaints of people hearing the sound. and there are more and more locations where the sound can be heard. and there are more and more people who own mobile phones... i rest my case.
