I am completely appalled by this article. As someone who knows somebody who died from "Magic Mushroom" use, how could this article be posted on such a trustworthy news site?! He had been using mushrooms for awhile and definitely had other drug use and addiction problems as well. How could this article claim that 'shrooms could actually help with drug addictions? My friend died because of a bad reaction to the drug. Seeing that he got a bad rash from it and then he was already tripping from the 'shrooms, he cut his wrists and bled to death and here this article is saying that 'shrooms could help cure depression? Really? And these statistics seem like bull@!$%# to me. So maybe the study tested some bum hippies who were happy from tripping all the time? This article is completely ridiculous and appalling. Although the author of this article did mention that 'shroom use should only be done in a monitored environment, the did NOT thoroughly investigate or discuss all the risks involved in using this drug, and that is extremely dangerous to an uninformed or ignorant reader who is going to read this article and feel like it is ok for him to experiment with 'shrooms- with or without an prescription.
Carly, I am as appalled by your ignorant, hateful response as you apparently are of this article.
If you had done one iota of research (as I like to do when I am confronted with a new concept) you would have learned that psilocybin mushrooms are less toxic than aspirin, non-addictive (because use rapidly creates high tolerance), and that mushrooms and other hallucinogens have been used for thousands of years throughout the world for religious/spiritual reasons.
You insult the scientists by suggesting they would let "bum hippies" participate in a controlled study and you insult the rest of the us by suggesting that we will go out and wantonly consume any supposedly beneficial substance we read about. I hear that stem cell therapy can be beneficial but I'm not about to visit the hospital and start gobbling down umbilical cords!
I'm very sorry about the death of your acquaintance but it sounds like he had deeper psychological issues that led to his compulsive drug use and self-harming behavior.
Having spent my fair share of time in "Wonderland" back in my youth, I can personally vouch for the quality of the afterglow experienced at the tailend of a mushroom journey. Sure beat even the best ever drunken night on the town.
If some science and some thoughtful steering can be applied to the voyage to help people in need...by all means devote some research to it!
Magic mushrooms don't pop up on the addictive drug map if I remember my high school health class lectures.
I also remember reading an article about Timothy Leary and a collegue of his using hallucinogens to treat the underlying psychological issues of criminals while he was a professor at Harvard. They had a much better than usual methods used success rate at preventing recidivism by these inmates when released from prison.
This was all before he began personally enjoying his own treatment too much and got let go by the university.

Excellent point, K-Man. I read Leary's autobiography years ago, and he described that prison treatment program using mushrooms. Truly fascinating stuff, and incredibly effective. I want to say something like 5% or less of the inmates who went through the treatment ended up back in prison w/in a year of release, versus around 90%+ of non-treated inmates.
They purifi the substance I wonder if they got the vomiting sensation out ? I prefered peyote or LSD it helped my adhd when I got really bad I could use one of these to " shake up my mind" afterwards I felt like everything was back to a more relaxed state where I could concentrate better! The after effect would last up to 2-3 years sometimes..
This has been tried with various drugs in the past and has worked wonders for people!! Lets try it again really!! Hw many examples do you need to see before you accept this idea as failure.
Psychedelics have received a bad reputation from misinformation being spread, mainly by the government. In truth, LSD is just about the least toxic substance one can put in their body. For those seeking information, I would suggest reading "LSD, My Problem Child", by Albert Hofmann. Also, check out the website of the privately funded MAPS organization at MAPS.com These are great starting points for those seeking the truth about how these substances can be of real benefit to the human family.
This does not surprise me. People often say medical marijuana helps keep them sane. So even though magic mushrooms are more potent, they must have a better effect than taking any antipsychotic drug.
All I know personally, I was suffering from depression and addiction simultaneously. A good friend of mine had mushrooms and recommended I eat a large dose. ( at this point I had never had them before) The effects of the drug were SO strong, that at the end of my trip I discovered motivation and happiness I never knew I had. I haven't touched any drugs or alcohol since that day and I have been living a happy and fulfilled life ever since. I am currently studying chemical engineering in university and since then have done my fair share of research on the drug because the after effects astonished me so much. It is true that psilocybin (the active ingredient in mushrooms) is actually less toxic than tylenol, aspirin, and a lot of those over the counter chemical pharmaceuticals that are consumed daily by people. Nobody can tell me I'm wrong because of the huge transformation that ME personally went through, and now being a chemistry major.
Just because something is illegal, doesnt mean its bad.. Cigarettes are legal and they are proven to kill you. So to think in such a way is illogical. It's human nature to fear what you dont understand, and mushrooms are insanely hard to understand but I back this article 110%

God bless.
They don't call them "magic" for nothing, bad magic that is.

I'd try it.
I just don't get how you can treat drug addiction with one of the drugs that many are addicted to? There's some sort of contradiction there.

Your information is wrong. Psychedelics have no addictive properties.

alcoholism is a terminal disease! you cant treat chemical addiction with another chemical !
