This is horrible news, if it passes and is signed into law! Politicians who are glorified econ majors and lawyers make up catchy taglines to dupe the public. Great, now the house is telling MD's and PhD's how to do their job. Why have the FDA or review boards at all if we can just ask politicians what they think?! Wonder how many genetics courses Rep. Don Young took? Wonder if he took intro to biology?
We do need sustainable food sources for the ever-increasing global population... For sure!
Genetically modified foods, just like every advancement that humanity makes in increasing food production, is controversial.
The controversy, as always, will eventually give way to the simple necessity that our ever increasing population will require more food. Simply put, the rate of human reproduction is not sustainable with our current food production capability. Genmod foods are the future.
I am all for more testing of anything that we put into our bellies and our ecosystem, but uneducated fear mongering over a scientifically viable method of increasing food output is childish at best.
We either go the route of genmod foods, or we can start considering Soylent Green (it's made out of people) - or forced contraceptions and family-size limitations. You choose.
As long as they're not thrown into the natural habitats of native species I don't care. Really it comes down to "are the protein of the genetically modified and natural fish the same?" If the answer is yes I don't see the problem.
The real danger here is not not so much eating the modified species. The REAL danger is what has ALREADY happened thanks to companies such as Monsanto...and that is...the OWNERSHIP of the modified foods and the genes by BIG BUSINESS. For those of you who are news challenged and fail to see the danger. Read here:
There is a lot of other info out there...you just need to be willing to look for it...
So, if you want the food supply to be controlled by a handful of uber-rich corporations and greed-driven pricks, then please, support genetic food modification...
We either go the route of genmod foods, or we can start considering Soylent Green (it's made out of people) - or forced contraceptions and family-size limitations. You choose.
maybe 'force' wouldn't be needed if people would practice a little bit of self-control and limit their family sizes voluntarily. and then all of these modifications to increase food production would also be unnecessary. but people want self-gratification no matter what the cost
Caligula Good post the people who are easily led by the propaganda out there for GMO's need to see this problem although it is so much easier to just go along with the corporations who churn out billions in ad and information campaigns to further their agenda's which places profit over honesty or the protection of Americans.
Allie reduction of population is crucial but GMO's are not what they purport themselves to be. They are not more efficient. I recently watched a documentary that highlighted organic crop yield. These two young people were farming a three acre plot of land. When compared to the yield of a corporate farm yield on the same amount of acreage the corporate farms produced only 16 percent of what the organic farmers produced. Yes the organic farms methods was more labor intensive. But with all the people out of work this seems to be an excellent way for young people to be able to make a clean ethical living. Corporations today can spend as much money as they want to influence the public mind set. They can and do lie and they do get away with it. If you research the numbers of times large corporations have been fined for illegal activities you would be appalled. They continue this illegal behavior because the fines are insignificant to the profit they get from unethical policies.
From yet another perspective, this provides a clue to the fact that Republicans apparently can afford to enjoy salmon, hence want their salmon to be natural rather than genetically modified . . .
Nevertheless, it is a step in the right direction, regardless of whether only Republicans can afford real food, for sure . . .
For sure! :)
P. S. Yet another fact is that in most well-stocked grocery stores and supermarkets at the dawn of the early-21st century there are two wild caught canned fish, where one is wild caught Alaskan salmon and the other is sardines wild caught off the coast of Scotland . . .
Everything else is dubious at best, and the wild caught Scottish sardines are becoming difficult to find, in part because they cost about $3 a tin . . .
I do NOT want to eat genetically modified animals or plants. Playing with Mother Nature just doesn't work, people. Let nature do its thing. I also buy as much organic food from the local farmer's market as possible. The vast majority of the produce is within a dollar of what's sold at the grocery store, if not cheaper. The meat from the market tends to be more expensive, but I know where it's coming from and how they care for their animals. Watch the film King Corn, it's an eye opener. GMO crops (and animals) don't work! Vote with your dollar and buy food that you know where it comes from! Support your local famers who DON'T do this!
Playing with Mother Nature just doesn't work, people.
What do you think agriculture is? Irrigation? Horticulture? Husbandry?
If humans didn't "play with mother nature" we'd still be hunter gatherers living in the bush and speaking with clicks.
The fact of the matter is that local farmer's markets and organic produce are NOT ENOUGH to come anywhere close to sustaining the current population, much less future populations. Our current food production capabilities are barely enough to feed the planet (and some would argue it is currently behind the demand)....
If you don't want to eat it then don't. There will still be a big market for "natural" fish for a VERY long time if this is allowed.
What I don't like is the House thinking they know better than the FDA. Hell, I'm opposed to the House thinking they know better than anyone else because as far as I'm concerned they've proven they're not the most intelligent that we have to offer.
And as far as cost, you have to remember that many foods are subsidized by the government, but GMO foods most likely aren't. So you're paying more for the "natural" food in the end.
As for eating GMO foods, I gladly would. If I'm right about it then everything will be fine. If the detractors of it are right I'll probably die from it. Just quit complaining about it and let me enjoy my meals in the meantime.
Sure, in agriculture you use irrigation to water your crops. But last time I checked that didn't involve splicing that irrigation system with bacteria from one creature and hormones from another to get the irrigation system to grow 5 times it's normal rate. ?? You'd just dig that ditch bigger...no gene switching involved.
From what I've read we do not know enough about genes and how they work--if we did we'd probably have cures for more diseases by now.
The point I'm trying to make is that we can sustainabily grow food without messing with genes. If we support our local farmers with our dollar they won't be hanging up their hat and moving on to other jobs. They'll be keeping their land, if not buying more land, because people are investing in their livelyhood, which in turns feeds the community. It's a cycle. And yes, the world is over populated. But that's another long, long discussion...
As to the government 'thinking they know better than the FDA'...I can understand that you don't want them to make choices for you as to what you can and can't eat...well I don't want them to make choices for me either and 'secretly' be feeding us GM foods. Fine--Let's say we meet in the middle...they pass the GM stuff and all of us 'anti-GM crazies' over here that want to know what we are eating manage to get a law passed that food must be labeled GM, if it is GM. Well, I still won't be eating that GM crap. But you go right ahead. :) I do hope I'm wrong, and that everything works out, because it will be a sad, sad day when/if we find out that us 'anti-GM crazies' were right all along...
Sarah you are incorrect. Everything from rice to corn, every domesticated animal, has been genetically modified by man. Difference, what used to be accomplished over 1000 years is now done in 10. At the rate our population is expanding, that is exactly what we need.
You must not have read very much, nor taken any genetics or bio classes yourself. We have not studied the HUMAN genome enough to know how to cure human disease, since we first mapped the human genome about 15 years ago. On the other hand, we know plenty about microbes, mice, insects, rabbits, goats, and many plant genomes (including most crop plants) and have been studying effects of genetic manipulation in thoes model organisms for about 50-60 years now.
Your point that we can sustainable grow food is inaccurate. Farm grown and homegrown is not sustainable. Period. It was in the 1950's when population was under 2billion globally. We are now poised to hit 7 billion, almost 4x more mouths to feed with farmland being depleted around the world for construction, housing, tourism, etc. We do not have the land for grazing or agriculture, we do not have the feed, we do not have the water, we do not have the fertilizer, we do not have the pest control. Biotechnology and GM gives us all that. We can grow corn outside the corn belt now, in drought areas no less! Here is some additional information:

MMM MMM Beer I noticed you sited the World Bank so it is obvious that you have boought into that paradigm. But the truth is that you are the one in the wrong. GMO crops produce 16 percent per acre what a field of well tended organic or natural field crop can grow. Overall the nutritiional value of organic food versus GMO crops is 25 percent higher across the board. In addition the pesticides used in conjunction with these GMO seeds is not being released by the body. You need to go to the site responsibletechnology.org and look up the indpendent studies( that a gag order was placed on for ten years by Monsanto) done on GMO crops and their effect on lifestock. Maybe you should get off the beer and open your eyes.
Halifax people are not complaining they are trying to protect people especially children who will suffer from it. Stop complaining about just wanting to enjoy yourself and become a part of something more important than your need for pleasure and comfort.
You had better stop eating altogather right now, because almost every from of modern food is a result of cross breeding of various animal and plant spieces. Since the dawn of time when man first started cultivating crops and keeping animal stock, we have worked to increase our food out put by cross breeding plants to have stronger yeilds, be more drought resistant, to have better genetic traits. Its called evolution, the times and technology may change, but the goal is the same, to provide new and better sources of food for the world population. As lad masses become more and more populated the demand for food continues.
Wrooooong Bear and Charlie! In NO way would ocean pout, eel and salmon DNA EVER be combined in nature!
Wake up! You also miss the real point here, perhaps because you like to quote the World Bank as if it is a benign entity. Even if there are no health pitfalls to eating frankenfish, if the government allows it to be PATENTED, and then that altered fish breeds in the wild, and then bits of DNA are found in other fish...it is entirely conceivable that a corporation would claim ownership of all salmon. This model has already been played out both in Canada and the United States. Farmers have been put out of business because bee-pollination caused Monsanto dna-altered grain to be found in the fields of farmers who refused to buy their seed. Imagine a future in which corporations own food and it is illegal for you to grow (or catch) it yourself. It is just around the corner!
Fight for freedom - as a well-educated molecular biologist I must ask, "Did you just make up those stats?" I hope not, and I hope you check your sources again. I believe they are feeding you a line of excrement. GMO crops aren't generally made to be "worse producers" as you indicate - that wouldn't make sense. Your claim of significantly less nutritional value is also questionable. Check out "golden rice" or one of the other crops that have saved lives.
People, there are things to be concerned about when it comes to GMOs and biotech. There should be strong regulation and oversight to prevent irresponsible actions of the big corporation choosing money over safety. But the "frankenfish" crowd is political in nature: they appear limited in knowledge (if it is even desired) and quickly ready to lob emotional bombs.
Many people here have done a good job reminding everyone that farming and breeding are approaches that genetically alter a species. The problem is - traditional breeding is a broad approach throwing every trait into the mix - while bioengineering can be more directed, precise and contains much less superfluously transferred material.
Just saying. Science over the politics of fear and ignorance. It's healthy.
Sarah good post and to the people who have would rather have so called corporate owned scientists tell them what to eat I say shame on you for not looking beyond the billions corrupt corporations spend to sway public opinion their way.
I bet you its because Monsanto didn't invent it so they tried to have this genetically modified fish banned. When they create their own, then they will allow it.
Monsanto is crops...it is an agbiotech company. This is an animal (fish). Monsanto's patent doesn't apply, nor is their business model concerned with livestock animals. The ones trying to get his banned are Alaska's reps who are being paid off by their fishermen/salmon industry.
Sarah I left a response for MM MM Beer that I think you might be interested in and a website that will help substantiate what your common sense and research has already shown you
Anyone notice this news article on the same day the Chinese announced they have injected human DNA into dairy cattle to make cattle produce "human" breast milk?
While this may make some (myself included) shudder, it's another sign that we, as a society, are not willing to compete on a global stage.
Steve the Chinese have a huge population to support and are making decisions that will cause illness but hey the last time they had a conflict 30 million died a drop in the bucket for them. Your choices are not logical nor necessary.
These morons in our government can't even balance a checkbook(IE budget their money) and here they are spouting off about things that are way above the 10 grade biology most of them either attended, slept through, or were trying to pick the pocket of the guy/gal sitting in front of them.
Once you morons in The house and Senate can balance the budget then you might actually have something to say about stuff you most likely don't know $h!t about.
I hope for once in the last 10 years that the House stops the GMO salmon. Everybody go to responsibletechnology.org and look for the results of independent studies done on GMO food that has been grown and fed to animals. Allergies small birth rates even death. There was a gag order on these results for 10 years and Monsanto's lawyers in effect kept their dirty secret under their dirty tactics to suppress the truth. It is a real disgusting story of how this company during the Bush administration moved their personnel from their company to key government positions to grease the way for their dirty product to pollute our planet and then moved their employees back to their company. Obama made a campaign promise to make all GMO products be labeled as such but you still don't see them on the labels. Just another disgusting example of corporate laws that allow limited liability ( you can't send a corporation to jail) but they are considered a person. The same holds true for GMO they are patented and sold as food (a life form) yet the Constitution clearly states you can not patent life. The supreme court let them get away with it. Farmers have had their fields infected and lost their farms because Monsanto forced them to pay hefty fines because of their patent. Our judges have allowed this to happen. I rarely get angry but this infuriates me.
Just research the "Factory Farms" and you will see how bad they are. They are hiding the facts and we are paying for it. Also they fail to say how gentically altered food contaminates the Heritage foods, HMMMM wonder why.
luvenia48 I am not familiar with the Heritage foods problem. Please explain. Also the Factory Farms I am aware of their practices and how unsanitary and unhealthy an environment it is for animals and then the slaughtering techniques are really nasty. I no longer buy my beef from the grocery store. I buy grass fed beef that is not slaughtered in the corporate owned slaughter houses.
iamfitforlife Yes Obama said he would get it done but not a peep out of him about it since he took office. Check out the site I listed it will give you information on what crops to avoid what you need to buy that is organic and what is still at least not GMO In addition you can google a list of pesticides levels in crops as well as GMO seeds that are currently in use in the US.
They should also pass a law that all idiot politicians (all politicians are idiots) be labeled as such but alas to no avail. I think I'll try again on that campaign front.
genetically modified salmon all studies show that there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. With the great demand for fish and supplies of fresh salmon almost non existent anymore there is no good reason why we shouldn't let this into the food chain.
How many decades have they been studying G.M. foods? Have they been working on it or is it a more recent thing? I'm truly curious not being a smart as s. Many things are introduced as a good thing but decades later find out it wasn't such a hot idea anyway.
So let me understand this right. They will NOT allow a genetically modified fish,BECAUSE IT WILL COMPETE WITH "REAL" FISH. I guess it is OK TO ALLOW GENETICALLY MODIFIED GRAINS ( 90% OF ALL SOYBEANS, AND 72% OF ALL THE CORN PRODUCED IN THE U S) IS GENETICALLY MODIFIED......N O W!!!!!!! So what is their excuse for the fish, it will allow people in Massachusetts to make money at the expense of Alaskans. NOTHING SAID ABOUT ALTERING D N A , JUST ABOUT MONEY AND PROFIT. That is what you have now people, PROFIT ABOVE SAFETY, don't you seep better now knowing some greedy bastard is deciding what you will eat tomorrow and they could care less if you die tomorrow evening. This is your republicrap leadership in action, remember vote for them again, IF YOU ARE ALIVE TO DO SO.
Ray that is exactly what they will do and have done for the last fifteen years. During that time their has been a significant increase in allergies in both adults and childrens. But the far reaching side effects are like playing Russian Roulette with the environment. Also there are a lot more GMO's out there than the two largest that you quoted. Europe has banned the use of these seeds. For the supreme court to allow Monsanto and others to patent these seeds which the Constitution says you cannot patent life and then sell them as a life form shows just how far our country has sunk into corporate corruption.
Fighter, I think you have something there. I remember thinking to myself one day, man when I was younger it didn't seem like there were any peanut allergies, or it was very rare, then came the "gluten free" crowd that suddenly popped up, it's an allergy to wheat products. It seems that as I get older (which I may never truly admit to) there are more and more things that people become allergic to.
anon yes there is an increase in allergies and cancer which is partly due to toxins in the environment. The independent study that I referenced in an earlier post see no. 7 you will see a web site that is non-profit and seeks to get the information out there about the gag order that was lifted and what the results were. What Monsanto has done and continues to do is wrong. You can avoid GMO's and the heaviest levels of pesticides on fruits and vegetables if you google it and also the web site I gave will have information. google GMO seeds in the US and also pesticide levels on fruits and vegetables. Let me know if you are not successful and I will get a specific website for you. Take Care

This is not a republican or democratic issue, this a people issue. Both parties are part of the problem. I am a republican and I am very against GM food.
If it weren't for "GENETIC engineering we wouldn't have half the food we have today!!!
All beef would be tough and stringy (cross breeding for flavor, tenderness and taste--KOLBE beef!!),
Your ears of corn would not be big and juicy (did I mention WHITE corn??) but small and hard to chew---the ones that the bugs didn't get that is. Yes we even modify the genes of plants to resist bugs!!!!
As for the vegies--there are over 400 varieties of Tomatoes---and they all came from just one ONE. White peaches, "cuties", giant pumpkins, seedless watermelons (they grow FROM seeds---so how can we grow "seedless" and still have them?). Need I go on??
GED Teacher let me explain the difference between selective breeding and genetic mutation. Selective breeding stays withing a simple selecting of species that compliment each other and putting them together. Genetic mutation is when you take a gene give it a tumor (Cancer are tumors) this tumor allows the scientist to force a new genetic code configuration on the seed. Then they select a bacteria from a biological hazard site and inject that into the seed. The independent test done on these GMO crops was suppressed for 10 years until they finally came out. What was revealed in the animals who ate GMO crops were low birth weight and sickly offspring allergies and even death. Finally the pesticides that were designed specifically to go with these GMO crops have been shown that these toxins are not being released by the body. That is the difference. Go to the website I mentioned if you doubt me.
lol. Sorry fight for freedom. I read through this string and could see you repeatedly referring to this one post. Really?
Try a new source of information or a textbook on genetic modification. You have tiny pieces of information that are crudely put together to make a narrative. Problem is, your grasp of the science does not appear to be firsthand. You have taken several words - mutation, tumor, cancer, and injecting a bacteria into a seed - and just pasted them together. I think I maybe understand the concept you tried to grasp . . . but you really did miss it. That is NOT how it works in the lab.
I'm not trying to dis or laugh at you, but please, stop spreading the misinformation. Instead, go to a college near you and sit in on a genetic engineering class (or a simple genetics class). You seem to have great passion about the topic and that is important. Use it to spread truth. :) The world needs more good scientists.
Your education and possible livelihood is supported by corporate interest either directly or indirectly so forgive me if I doubt the efficacy of your statement. Universities research has long been funded by corporations. Laws governing Corporations provide limited liability although they are accorded the same privlage as person. You can not send a corporation to jail or put them to death for crimes against humanity. So you can take your derision and attempt to belittle research conducted by real scientist who also have ethics and put it back in Monsanto's dirty underwear. I gave a web site for you to look at go there instead of spreading your propaganda.
genes can't get tumors. bacteria are used to mass produce our recombinant gene products and are literally popped open when the product is purified out. i'm also a molecular biologist and i've seen some pretty wonky projects, but bacteria aren't all nasty and probably wouldn't do anything besides kill the seed or the bug itself if it were injected into seed. as for the biohazard sites they're taken from, the fridge in my lab has a pretty nice variety. about 6 flavors of E. coli and i have to say the grape smell given off by the P. aeruginosa isn't too bad at all. genes code for proteins, those fancy macromolecules that do pretty much everything in an organism. recombinant transfections into eukaryotes (smart people talk for adding genes to critters) trigger the construction or silencing of the proteins like hormones. more hormones mean more change, which means more growth, means bigger fish, means more food faster.
educated people speak aside, in the coming years we're going to need GMOs. it's basic ecology, humans just like to think we're above the rules since some of us are smarter than others and can figure out the tech to compensate. this is the new tech. current systems are not sustainable; more people means more food requirements. resources are dwindling along with farm land yet people still keep squirting out new people. lemme give you an example, you strike me as an animal planet watcher so i'll go there; 20 dogs in a one bedroom apartment with a 50lb bag of food. they're fine the first week. as the food goes down, the dogs start to look a bit manky. then a few will probably die since the more resourceful dogs know how to get what they need. the system balances out in favor of the survivors. same rule applies to people and the land we inhabit; as resources lower, chunks of the population will die off until the balance is restored. some people say the Duggars are blessed but i look at them and think ecological disaster.
GMOs are the new way we can cheat the rules to feed the masses the most efficiently with the least resources. we can do in 10 years what it takes nature 100 to come up with and we're going to need all the help we can get as the population rises. and seriously, follow scott's advice and read a biology text, the newer ones have pictures now.
The elephant in the room is human population growth. I would not be opposed to family size limits, if it would allow the earth to recuperate from the demands and stresses our species puts upon it. Also, never imagine that there is a solution to hunger. The more food we produce, the more children will be born and will need to eat. More will survive, have greater numbers of children, and will want even more food and resources. You see this pattern with all species, and especially pronounced in the predator species. We alone have a choice about this. Perhaps we need to consider the hard one.
Mom Tom Overpopulation is a serious problem and we can not force people to be responsible. I don't think the human species has developed to the point that it will voluntarily choose not to allow the reproduction imperative to blind them to the moral and responsible behavior choices of limiting birth rate growth. You are absolutely right about the stress load or what scientists call carrying capacity of an environment. The hard choice you allude to is one that I don't know it I could make for someone against their will. However, it is very hard to watch the continual wars disease and famine that are the result of overpopulation and a general failure to cooperate in time of crisis.
Reference you are absolutely correct but the elitist who think we are just too ignorant to understand their great plan for us. I tell you the day will come when these scientists and corporations doing these horrible things to nature and people will rue the day they were born. They will become the pariah in our society. The truth is beginning to come out and when enough people find out what these so called scientists are doing they will be out of a job and lucky if they aren't made the sacrificial goat for the corrupt corporations that pushed this garbage on us.
PLEASE don't let this monster into the world. I lived in a part of Alaska where Salmon is the main industry and Native Alaskans depend on Salmon for subsistence survival. And this is the last salmon fishery remaining; already the Atlantic salmon have been destroyed through overfsishing and farming.
By the way, if it says "Atlantic Salmon" on the package it is farm-raised. They have to dye the meat to make it orange, and the fish are raised in polluted pens with waste accumulating on the bottom. Already, this last natural salmon fishery in Alasaka is endangered by the Pebble Mine - a foreign-owned company that has a track record of environmental disasters.
I'm not some leftist nut - I am a conservative and an outdoorsman who doesn't want to see this precious resource destroyed for future generations. There is nothing as beautiful as a natural wild salmon (5 species) - especially when you filet them and cook them right there on the shore. The meat is a beautiful deep red. And these fish are essential to the entire ecosystem in the Pacific Northwest, including Grizzly Bears.
Please don't let this beast loose on the planet with the false argument that it will feed more people. That is a lie. The purpose is to make more profits.
not according to our resident corporate owned biologist Scott. Hey we got nothing to be worried about. All we need to do is go sit in a class and learn what real science is.
Biz, I find it funny that everyone on the left assumes that conservatives don't care about the environment. We care very much and believe in responsible stewardship, just not extremist views.
Fight, I find it funny strange, not funny ha ha. I label as extremist, environmental groups who seek to keep forests pristine by suing to prevent removal of dead wood and materials that help prevent forest fires. I live in Colorado and have seen the devastation of forest fires first hand. There are extreme environmental groups out there, what was the name of that group that set car dealerships on fire? I can't remember, but those are the extremists I was talking about, not your average environmentalist.

What absolutely amazes me about this whole discussion is that no one seems disturbed by the fact that, in a year (the second year, in fact) in which we have NO budget, two or three wars (depending on whether or not your count Libya), a national debt that is somewhere 10 and 20 Trillion dollars (depending on who's figures you believe), a deficit as far as the eye can see, and myriad other problems of national interest, the House is sitting around picking its collective nose second guessing scientists on whether or not a fish is fit to eat.
People, please wake up - you're being distracted from the real issues that threaten our country today. Don't let media hype and hot button issues drain the energy you need to write/call/visit your Representatives and Senators and demand action on ALL of the important issues.
If genmod food is an important issue for you, great, let your Rep and Sens know that too - just don't forget to tell them about the budget and remind them of the few things that they're actually SUPPOSED to do under the Constitution.
GM food is a big issue to a lot of people. There was a concerted effort by those people to contact their reps and let them know we did not want the GM salmon approved and had very valid concerns, so they are listeneing at least some, so this is not some small issue that they pulled out of a hat to detract from other things not being done.
I won't even eat farm-raised salmon or tilapia, and would never eat anything that is GMO unless I didn't know it was. It's scary to think that the morons on capitol hill have any say on this. I'm wondering how they find time to ponder this question in between sending pictures of their weiners and toe-tapping in the restrooms. You know they'll ok it, because all politicians are now LEGALLY owned by the corporations that actually own this country. Maybe they can make a GMO politician, then they won't have to spend any more money on them, just program them to say "they can do that".
If your research it there was a swinging door during Bush's administration. The fact that the Supreme Court would allow these seeds to be patented and then sold as a life form says just how deep the corruption goes.
I agree with those who say all GMO's should be labeled. Most food products contain ingredient labels and those products that have been altered should also be required to identify themselves as such. it's simply a matter of listing the facts so consumers can make their own educated decisions. And, by the way, if these fish are so safe, or any other GMO product, what's the problem with this fish company or any other company that ventures into GMO technology simply listing it's "ingredients", just like most other food product are required to do.
This is serious matter. We are fighting monsanto in france, too. We hate this company.. do you know that they are the ones that produce nutrasweet which is a poison chemical ? Nutrasweet can kill you and will make you fat and addicted to it.
The last time I did research on Europe's stand on GMO's Europe had banned the introduction of GMO's. Has that changed or was my information incorrect ? We hear little on the subject of Europe.
I just do not understand why americans are not aware of what they eat and why they do not fight to stop farmers from putting hormones and antibiotics in their meat. Just like health care, this is a major issue because it does impact everybody !
You, rather waste your time on Wiener. It is just so ridiculous ! What wierner did or does, does not impact your lives or quality of life !!
The hormones have been banned as far as I have heard has that changed again? However the diet of commercially grown beef is horrible and the milk cows life is also unnatural and produces in my opinion sick milk. If you have ever drank pure grass fed milk from a healthy cow that gets out in a pasture it is purely divine. Naturally sweet because the cow is happy and healthy.
I don't think eating it would be a problem. The thing I am worried about is this modified fish mating with the natural population, who knows where that goes?
The resultant offspring may grow too large to swim upstream and spawn or become so ravenous that it kills off other species. I don't know, and I am sure the FDA and the company who produced this don't know either.
The FDA has proved over and over that it is not to be trusted. I don't want to be putting Frankenfood into my body or any of my family members bodies either. And make no mistake, I love salmon.
I think all frankenfood, GMO should be labeled, it is our choice what we put in our bodies, not the FDA's or Congress's. Heaven knows Congress isn't responsible either. Prove me wrong for a change Congress!!
Nan you are right not to trust the FDA since it has been a swinging door for corporate employees to go and work for the FDA and then return to their corporate company. Talk about collusion. Maybe the good ole boys on the hill won't want their salmon fishing threatened. God I have become so cynical but who wouldn't when faced with so much corruption going on today in Washington and Corporate/Global America. It would be so easy to just go along and say nothing. I am an old gal and my time on this earth grows shorter but I will speak out against these atrocities until I can no longer speak. I love America and still have hope that America's children will have better future than the one Global Rule would give them.
This is excellent news, if it passes and is signed into law!
We do not need Frankenfish on the menu, for sure . . .
For sure! :-o
For sure!
What Rep Young most likely took was a large campaign check from the Alaska Salmon Industry. It's always about money, follow the money.

So, if you want the food supply to be controlled by a handful of uber-rich corporations and greed-driven pricks, then please, support genetic food modification...
maybe 'force' wouldn't be needed if people would practice a little bit of self-control and limit their family sizes voluntarily. and then all of these modifications to increase food production would also be unnecessary. but people want self-gratification no matter what the cost
But fear mongers never seem to have solutions.

Charlie see 13.1
Wrooooong Bear and Charlie!
Oh Joy good post people need to hear this even though it takes them out of their comfort zone.
Sarah good post and to the people who have would rather have so called corporate owned scientists tell them what to eat I say shame on you for not looking beyond the billions corrupt corporations spend to sway public opinion their way.
Oh Joy, you're right. Mary Jane anyone? Who other than the gov't gets to grow their own?
I bet you its because Monsanto didn't invent it so they tried to have this genetically modified fish banned. When they create their own, then they will allow it.
Monsanto is crops...it is an agbiotech company. This is an animal (fish). Monsanto's patent doesn't apply, nor is their business model concerned with livestock animals. The ones trying to get his banned are Alaska's reps who are being paid off by their fishermen/salmon industry.
I wouldn't be surprised if Monsanto doesn't try to buy them out.
Here's an article the discusses the potential problems of this genetically modified Salmon:
Sarah I left a response for MM MM Beer that I think you might be interested in and a website that will help substantiate what your common sense and research has already shown you

Didn't any of you watch Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs?
Anyone notice this news article on the same day the Chinese announced they have injected human DNA into dairy cattle to make cattle produce "human" breast milk?
While this may make some (myself included) shudder, it's another sign that we, as a society, are not willing to compete on a global stage.
Eat or be eaten - which do you prefer?
Steve the Chinese have a huge population to support and are making decisions that will cause illness but hey the last time they had a conflict 30 million died a drop in the bucket for them. Your choices are not logical nor necessary.
These morons in our government can't even balance a checkbook(IE budget their money) and here they are spouting off about things that are way above the 10 grade biology most of them either attended, slept through, or were trying to pick the pocket of the guy/gal sitting in front of them.
Once you morons in The house and Senate can balance the budget then you might actually have something to say about stuff you most likely don't know $h!t about.
but like everything i say on NV
It just my .02 cents
They need to pass a law that all GMOs be labled! I do not want to eat it, and I have the right to know what I am eating!
iamfitforlife Yes Obama said he would get it done but not a peep out of him about it since he took office.

Yep, an old story. When your competition comes up with a better product, just buy yourself a Senator or Congressman and outlaw that improved product.
We've always engaged in genetic modification, we just used to call it breeding and do it more slowly!
reterry see 13.1
If it weren't for "GENETIC engineering we wouldn't have half the food we have today!!!
I gave a web site for you to look at go there instead of spreading your propaganda.
hey FOF
genes can't get tumors. bacteria are used to mass produce our recombinant gene products and are literally popped open when the product is purified out. i'm also a molecular biologist and i've seen some pretty wonky projects, but bacteria aren't all nasty and probably wouldn't do anything besides kill the seed or the bug itself if it were injected into seed. as for the biohazard sites they're taken from, the fridge in my lab has a pretty nice variety. about 6 flavors of E. coli and i have to say the grape smell given off by the P. aeruginosa isn't too bad at all. genes code for proteins, those fancy macromolecules that do pretty much everything in an organism. recombinant transfections into eukaryotes (smart people talk for adding genes to critters) trigger the construction or silencing of the proteins like hormones. more hormones mean more change, which means more growth, means bigger fish, means more food faster.
educated people speak aside, in the coming years we're going to need GMOs. it's basic ecology, humans just like to think we're above the rules since some of us are smarter than others and can figure out the tech to compensate. this is the new tech. current systems are not sustainable; more people means more food requirements. resources are dwindling along with farm land yet people still keep squirting out new people. lemme give you an example, you strike me as an animal planet watcher so i'll go there; 20 dogs in a one bedroom apartment with a 50lb bag of food. they're fine the first week. as the food goes down, the dogs start to look a bit manky. then a few will probably die since the more resourceful dogs know how to get what they need. the system balances out in favor of the survivors. same rule applies to people and the land we inhabit; as resources lower, chunks of the population will die off until the balance is restored. some people say the Duggars are blessed but i look at them and think ecological disaster.
They don't want to LABEL it because they know people won't BUY it. Label it and watch them go bankrupt in a year.
We care very much and believe in responsible stewardship, just not extremist views.
bmx the fact that you find any of this funny say it all about your lack of commitment to seek the truth and labeling others as extremists.

I wonder how many FDA officials used to work for Monsanto, DuPont, etc. (Or go to work for those companies after leaving gov't work)
Too many.
Nutrasweet can kill you and will make you fat and addicted to it.
google the danger of nutrasweet.
The last time I did research on Europe's stand on GMO's Europe had banned the introduction of GMO's. Has that changed or was my information incorrect ? We hear little on the subject of Europe.
Monsanto is a criminal company, they should be shut down and go to jail. They are poisoning the world and destroying our natural food supply.
What is wrong with americans ?
The hormones have been banned as far as I have heard has that changed again? However the diet of commercially grown beef is horrible and the milk cows life is also unnatural and produces in my opinion sick milk. If you have ever drank pure grass fed milk from a healthy cow that gets out in a pasture it is purely divine. Naturally sweet because the cow is happy and healthy.
In America, growth and other hormones are still allowed in beef and dairy cows.
