Really? So kids these days arent fat pieces of S just because they dont eat right? Imagine that. This is what happens when schools get rid of recess and gym.
We needed a CDC report to tell us this ? We get it, kids don't get enough exercise, neither do adults.. part of it is our techno lifestyle...computer, tv, texting, tweeting, video games... and the mountains of homework schools pile on kids every night... many parents work and don't have time or energy to go hiking or jogging or swimming with the kids and it's easier to feed them fast food or frozen pizza then to cook healthy and nutritious meals.
Kids being weighed and measured...may not be such a hot button issue for boys, but at the teenage age, many girls tend to be self conscious, and will ignore the risks, and hear only the NUMBER that the gym teacher or nurse calls out. In a young girls mind, this number means only one of three things, normal, fat or skinny - public school weigh ins, whether they affect a girls self esteem, can still be VERY humiliating....and at this stage in their emotional development, it would not surprise me that a lot of these girls who were called obese are now eating less, and pushing themselves beyond their limits in gym. I saw it happen to one of my girlfriends after we got weighed, I had to watch her for a couple of days to make sure she ate lunch, and finished it. I also made her sit her ass down in gym, because I could tell that she was trying to run herself "skinny", even on free days. She snapped out of it thankfully.
I remember those weigh ins. I should have refused, even though I was a healthy weight do those nurses not remember how delicate a young woman's self esteem is.....this should be done at the doctor's office, in a compassionate manner, not in front of all her friends and other students during SCHOOL (you know, the place for LEARNING) It's NONE of the school's business, it's between the PATIENT AND DOCTORS ONLY. Schools are being turned into weight clinics. I used to see all the other girls, waiting to be weighed, shifting around, clearly uncomfortable. You could see it in their eyes, they were almost petrified of being weighed, and whether or not they'd be made fun of and called "fatty", or "fatass". And there were also these girls with OUTSTANDING bodies (of all different shapes, and different body types, which PROVES that BMI is useless for one gender group), taking off their earrings, bracelets, necklaces, ponytails, watches, rings, belts, removing spare change from their wallets etc...some even went into the bathrooms to remove their underwear, for fear of being CONDESCENDINGLY LECTURED by the nurse, or teased about their weight. I even saw a couple of girls jogging in place....
The only thing schools should even be allowed to do is teach students proper eating habits, and exercises habits, but ultimately it's up to the students to follow through with them outside of school.
Kids don't exercise because they're lazy and out of shape, not because they're self conscious. It doesn't take a whole lot of confidence to walk for an hour after school or do push-ups or side-straddle hops for 30 minutes in your basement or bedroom or at the park. They're also enabled by their fat parents who are "too busy" to go for a walk with their kids, but they're not too busy to sit in front of the TV and turn into giant wastes of skin. Or who "don't have enough energy" to excersise, even though you BECOME energized by physical activity. NEWSFLASH: cancel your stupid cable subscription that costs $130/month, take that money you would have spent and buy yourself some decent running shoes. Problem solved. You get healthier, your Type Fat diabetes goes away, you don't have asthsma any more, your knees/hips/cankles don't hurt you any more, our taxes and insurance go down because your laziness isn't pulling the drain on healthcare and EVERYONE WINS.

Correct.
Lets force them to exercise ? bring back hitting so they can be whipped into shape maybe ?
Forcing anyone to physically do anything is the American way ? sorry, forgot it was.
