It is not surprising that AIDS patients are aging faster. They have a disease that severely alters a person's immune system. Anytime that a person has a disease for years on end, the stress alone will cause them to age faster. Some of the countries that this class of drugs are still being used there is the usual dealing with the disease and the major stress from a society that blames and shuns them.
If HIV is diagnosed and newer meds used, life span is 47years. HIV on average is diagnosed in people age 36 so newer meds allow you to outlive normal lifespan. This is in the U.S. I assume.
I don't understand your reaction to this article. The article states that certain types of AIDS medications have a side effect which effect the mitochondria. More advanced medications do not yet seem to have this side effect, although we are not certain because some of them have not been in use long enough.
If this were a cancer treatment would you have the same reaction, throwing your hands up and stating that there should be no more study and advancement of treatment? Should we accept "good enough" treatments for all patients, or just for AIDS patients?
@ AC Robertson...unless of course your name is Magic Johnson...who is neither dead or old looking...but is rich.....that's one of those "things that make ya go hmmmmmmm"
Johnson left U.S. went to Africa. The rumor was he took someone elses stemcells to replace his. My understanding is to get those cells another life would have to be sacrificed. As you say, he has a lot of money and lets face it, he went to Africa. One thing for sure no one will ever be able to prove anything.

What is the real meaning of this article. Premature aging vs. death? Is that not the real question?
OK, so if you have AIDS and take the drugs you get older faster and die quicker, but if you don't take the drugs you die young.
In other words, keep your underwear on, and your mouth shut, right?
How much taxpayers money did this "Study" get?

Premature aging vs the alternative - premature death. Not sure this is worth the read.
Agree and with many others wondering why this "study" was undertaken. AIDS drugs cause pre-mature aging! Compared to what, early death?
It seems like a no-brainer. "So, sir/madam, do you want to live longer or die earlier?"
Somebody needed to get published to climb a career ladder somewhere.
According to the latest CDC data- The average person who has AIDS in the USA is DEAD by their 46th birthday.
I do not think premature ageing is a problem...

News sources state Johnson takes meds for his HIV. I apologize for repeating rumors.
I'd have to weigh being prematurely aged and taking generics with taking 'name brand' and living to be AIDS free and old.
In the Western world you have that choice, other places cannot afford it.
