With little exception, after reading comments in various media, I can only conclude

this countries intellectual progress, it's citizens awareness of world issues , science and politics has stopped or actually regressed. There is still that pitch fork and blazing torch reaction sans considered thought mindset.

A minority, in terms of world population, of educated persons amongst a sea of the below average ones as the majority. We have come so far and not nearly far enough.

OMG - next they'll want to take children away from smoking parents, put them into child welfare systems (that always works really well for the kids) and obesity will be directly linked to being around second hand smoke! Funny, the European Studies on the effects of second hand smoke contradict this whimsical study! { :-) }

Perhaps people who smoke are more likely to listen to loud music? You may
suppose those that live or hang out with them are also exposed to loud
music?

Second hand smoke is not leading to teen hearing loss, its the music, video games and failure to wear hearing protection. Teens will lose their hearing faster than most humans because of the loud music they play in their cars, Ipods, driving with the window open, failure to wear hearing protection, concerts they attend and drug use. I serious doubt that second hand smoking is leading cause of teens losing their hearing.
