Hey, I've got an idea! Why not provide government assistance for a woman to get a tubal ligation, or just use good ol' birth control that works, which can be provided by government assistance... As I understand that sometimes these things can't be helped, this is not the majority of cases! There is also adoption? I would personally love to adopt... I have three children already, and would love to have five or more, but we can't have anymore due to health reasons, so adoption is a very real possibility for our future. (tubal ligation) Then women all over can have sex with anyone they want without the worries of pregnancy or the killing of an unborn child... that makes much more sense... forget CHIP and Medicaid, clip it where it starts! That would save lives! Both the mother and the child. There is a reason why I mock and intensely dislike organized religions. When taken to the extreme, you fanatics are essentially trying to play God. You use your religious texts as a fear mongering tool, claiming that "God says for you to do this or be condemned for eternity". Never mind the fact that the human interpretation of "God's words" is fraught with the potential for errors, misunderstandings and omissions. You also use your religious texts as a basis to pass judgement on other people, specifically non-believers, despite the fact that "God" is the only one that is qualified to make such decisions. And finally, you have the gull to make the grandiose attempt to "save the sinners/non-believers" without realizing just how arrogant and vain that kind of thought process really is. Here's an advice. Focus your attention on governing your own body and choices because you have neither the authority nor wisdom to dictate the "free will" choices of others. God Breathed life into Adam, who was not alive until there was air breathed into him. So when does "life" truly begin? Is it once the sperm fertilizes the egg, when the embryo becomes a fetus, or when the baby is born and actually takes its first breathe? Sure God knows all, He sees all, but I hate to break it to you...there is no Hell. The punishment for sins is death and death alone, eternal punishment, not eternal punishing. Why would God give the Devil (you know the angel who betrayed Him and rebelled against Him) all of that power? The Devil is here on earth, that was his punishment from God. God didn't give him the "gift" of reigning in his own kingdom. And if you think otherwise you are sadly confused.

We have been given free will by God. The ability to choose to live by God's law, or by our own. Since I can guarantee that the majority of the world; (including all of the church going nuts; Catholics, Christians, Jews, and Muslims alike) does not in fact follow the 10 Commandments (aka: GODS LAW) I can guarantee that all of those who "preach" "the Word" are just as bad as those who do not. You still choose to live life the way you choose and you choose not to live by God's Law. You can claim whatever you want...birth control, abstinence, sterilization, etc. Abstinence is completely unrealistic. Birth control fails all of the time. I always wanted to be a mother, but managed to become pregnant 2x while on birth control. Sterilization is not always an option as another woman stated before in a previous comment. I am pro-choice. How can you really be anything else. Live and let live, love thy neighbor, and respect the fact that each and every human being has their own God given right to make their own choices! Don't preach the Word unless you are perfect in it. Don't damn people to Hell just because you don't like what they have chosen. I am sure God will take care of those who disobey and refuse to follow His way. Melbel, the whole point of "the Word" is that none of us are perfect. No one is good, not one. Anyone who calls themselves a christian and claims to be perfect (I dont' know of any personally, but I'm sure they're out there) is actually not a christian at all. They, in fact, disparage the gospel and the name of Christ's by worshiping themselves, whether they realize that or not. The definition of a christian is one who recognizes that they can never live up to God's perfect laws - they are sinful and depraved - and therefore in need of a Savior to redeem them.

You don't have to believe that, MelBel. No one is making you believe that. You have a free will. No one is imposing their "religion" upon you unless they hold a knife to you and force you to convert....and even then, no man can REALLY change what you believe. I think what you are really talking about here is condemnation (not imposition), which very often DOES occur in these types of conversations, but I dare say that it is coming from both sides of the fence. Well said labeth85. The real issue here is not about religion, but about how much each human being is worth. If a "fetus" is not a baby, what else do you have to add to it for it to become one? If a human being can end the life of another just for their own conveinence, then we as a people truely have no value. Whether you believe in God or not, we must decide that either humans have value or they don't. If they don't then why are so many people in jail for murder? And if they do then why is abortion legal? Abortion is about selfishness and money, it is NOT about choice and it is NOT about valuing a human life. You want to take God out of the equation, then you are still left with the question: how much is a human being worth? Most medical professionals will tell you that life begins at conception -- even the ones that are pro-choice.

The real question is the rights of the fetus trump those of the rights of a woman's. No it does not. A woman has the right to bodily autonomy. It does not matter if you do not agree with that but you have no right to tell a woman how her body is used. A fetus is not equivalent to a living, sentient person. As long as a fetus is solely dependent of a woman's body for sustenance, she has the absolute right to terminate or continue her pregnancy. Don't like abortion? Don't have one. Leave the morality of abortion the individual person. Women are perfectly capable of making their own reproductive choices without your help.

I just went through an amazing $16,000 procedure today to have my eggs mixed with my husband's sperm. My husband and I were just rejoicing that tonite, they are fertilizing, and we are now sooooooo blessed and are rejoicing that we are now parents. Though my partner and I are fanatical about birth control, that's a very long window of opportunity for accidents to happen.

I'm pleased this drug is available for those making the choice to terminate. It might be less stressful to be in the home environment, and no traveling would be required, as well as the increase in personal privacy. The difference is I actually did adopt a beautiful little girl who was dying in India. She looked like something from a National Geographic magazine and it was utterly heartbreaking. And in a part of the world where abortions are used to cull female children because they are less valuable. With that said, I happen to be one of the few pro-lifers who does not have a problem with preventative methods like the "morning after pill." I do not believe that it is an abortion if the fertilized egg has not implanted in the womb...because it could not live without that. For the same reason I believe you can freeze a fertilized egg to save for implantation.

But we ALL have to acknowledge that at some point it DOES become a human being with the SAME right to live as the mother. I happen to believe it becomes a human being when it is attached to the mother AND has a heartbeat. Still...an abortion done within the first 6 weeks of gestation would be irresponsible. In the same vein, leaving dozens of fertilized eggs frozen without any potential of implantation is irresponsible.

I am also not one of those people who would demand that a woman should die if it came down to chosing between her and her fetus....but come on people....are we REALLY going to argue over .0001% of cases. No. It's a waste of breath.

My friend actually had something very serious happen to her. She and her husband desperately tried to have a baby. They finally got pregnant and at 6 mos along the ultrasounds revealed no lung development. Was she to actually carry that baby for 3 more months, just to give birth and then watch it die? How can you rationalize that argument? She had to have the dreaded 3rd trimester abortion and it was awful for her. She had to travel about 1,000 miles to do it, too. She is now the mother of 2 happy and healthy babies and I don't believe for one second that what she did was wrong.

A beating heart means what especially if it's hardly visible by the naked eye. The whole embryo is around half an inch if that.

And RU 486 is only used up to 3 weeks after that stage, most doctors prefer 7 and under because it's more effective the earlier.

I am expecting and just had an ultrasound yesterday. The baby measured to be about 7 weeks gestation. This "glob of cells" that is of the age of many unborn victims of RU-48 had a very clear heartbeat that measured 163 beats per minute. The baby already had arm and leg buds formed and could move and "swim" in my womb.

Though I am emphatically PRO-LIFE, I believe that those who are pro-choice intend to be of good will and to keep the mother's interests at heart (though I notice many of you say "mother" and yet claim there is no "baby"...this is instinctive because the truth is never far from the surface...)

I challenge you to visit any of the dozens of sights dedicated to showing expecting mother's the development of their unborn children. It is very clear that by the 22nd day after Conception, when most women are just finding out that they are pregnant, the heart begins beating. By the end of week 3, the major organs begin to form. By week 11, the child can suck it's thumb and has all components of the nervous system formed that allow the child to feel pain.

While we must support moms in crisis, we must also realize that actions have consequences. Sex creates people, people. It's not a tenant of faith- it's science. At the moment of conception, a new being with it's own irrepeatable DNA, comes into existence. And if the mothers are to be protected, we must also protect the life that grows innocently inside of them.

For those who deride those of us on the Pro-Life side, petty insults to our intelligence and derogatory comments about our faith do not hold water. Get the facts, see the results of an actual abortion, and then decide for yourself. More does need to be done to support mothers in crisis. The embryo does not have a fully developed heart at 6 weeks, but this is irrelevant anyway. The lungs are nowhere near developed, and the embryo cannot survive outside of the womb. A fetus has about a 50% chance of survival even at 24 weeks if admitted to an advanced Neonatal ICU, but will likely have significant deficits. I would not want to put my own child through that. Not every fetus is destined for life outside of the womb. Those are facts.

in a perfect world, people who didn't want kids would use fail-proof birth control, however, this isn't a perfect world and things happen. my only hesitation on abortion( i am absolutely 100% pro choice) are those that use abortion as a birth control option. and yes, preferably we could get youngsters to abstain until they are old enough to use judgement and self control when it comes to sex and babies, but it hasn't happened yet, so most likely it won't in the near future.

My wife was born only one pound six ounces and extremely pre-mature. By today's medical standard of thought - there are actually some doctors that because of the mindset of abortion - would suggest today to just abort the baby because of such an extremely pre-mature status. You see in order to carry the baby full term my grand mother-in-law had to stay bed ridden for almost 90% of her term. Today, if girls are encouraged to give up so easily by one simple and tiny phone call and a magical pill. Well thank God for my grand mother-in-law's convictions... but by today's standards and practices... my wife would have never been born. That is a bit scary to think about. I am a Christian and although I personally haven't adopted many friends and family members of mine have. You know it is alot of those religious fanatics that started those orphanages. We shouldn't be so foolish to think as though abortions are some charity to the child (they'll be handicapped, they are a "crack" baby, etc.) all children can feel love and and joy. Of all people I have talked to who have had abortions none have been because of complications with the child it has been for selfish reasons fear mostly.

My son was just in the NICU for 5 weeks. One of the babies in our room was born to a crack addict. By state law they were not allowed to release the baby to that mother. A foster family came in and adopted the baby. It was a family who could not get pregnant in the first place. To them abortion makes no sense at all.

Bobby, to others it makes perfect sense. And you have no guarantee that the family that adopted the crack baby will be successful.

I agree Lana, I would also like to add that I don't understand why some people think its just no big deal to carry a child you don't want for 9 months. Not everyone can take a month off work during the last month of pregnancy, and some women have very physical jobs that would require missing several months of work.

They will never know what they are "missing" therefore it's pointless to talk about them as if somehow they are "sad" at not getting to experience human existence. Choosing to sanctify conception is no more arbitrary than Catholics trying to sanctify every sperm.

Also, The Law of Unintended Consequences allows us to freely speculate that abortions may also create new life that was never intended. Think about it. A girl gets pregnant at 16. Rather than condemn herself and her unborn baby to a difficult life, she chooses to get an abortion. Later in life she is successful and happy and has 3 more children. 1,2, or all 3 of those children may never have been born without the abortion. Many women have a number they want. If it's say, 4, and the woman had an abortion early in life, the 4th one isn't born without the abortion.

So you see, it's pointless to speculate on what might have been. You might have spared a human 50 years of suffering. You might have prevented a future human from being born. What's important is the life of the female, her right to privacy, and her right to control over her own body.

The invention of the birth control pill was the single most important invention in the lives of women EVER. Up until that point women had no say over their future or destiny. More and more women don't want a man around. It's not that great. They don't pick up after themselves even if the woman works. She comes home and has ANOTHER job cleaning up after him while he watches sports and stuffs his face. Half of them cheat. Then you have to put up with their tyrranical little attitudes (see Joseph).

Why not just have a man over when you want sex and then send him home? Do your best with birth control but if it doesn't work either have the kid and make the best of it or adopt it out or abort it. Easy. Get a good career so you wont' have to be at the mercy of the Joseph's of the world.

With the event of Ultrasound, they were able in the early 1970s to see the actual fetuses in the womb screaming in pain and trying to avoid the instruments...babies move....potential babies dont...he was not able to do another procedure....he became one of the most ardent prolifers unti his death....He had performed over 10 000 abotions!!!

Fetology is the study of fetal life...would there be a whole medical field of study for a potential human...stop the rhethoric and think carefully, not emotionally..
