Considering this started in Texas and was Papayas!!?? Yet another scar on America caused by Illegal Immigration, and Obama still thinks this is OK??!! WAKE UP
Not unusual at all. Due to the chronic water shortage in Mexico, many farmers use sewage water to irrigate the crops. And if they use a sprinkler system then the water falls on the fruit. In Mexico all fruits and vegetables are washed in an antibacterial solution before eaten exact those that can easily be skinned or those that are going to be thoroughly cooked. So apples, pears, strawberries, tomatoes, onions, lettuce etc. are all put in purified water and then the antibacterial agent is added and the food is then swirled in the water to make sure that all the surfaces are completely covered and left to soak. As papaya is usually eaten and the skin left on, when the knife cuts through the skin, the blade carries the bacteria into the fruit and bingo the inside of the fruit is contaminated. Unfortunately even skinning the papaya won't work as the knife will contaminate the fruit too as it will bring the bacteria into contact with the fruit. If you don't have the antibacterial solution, bleach will also work. Several tablespoons per gallon of water will do and then let the fruit stay in the water about 15 minutes. Or better yet don't eat papayas.
And still the Republicans want to continue to get rid of those pesky regulations that hinder the ability of business to make lots of money and continue to de-fund the agencies who oversee the food supply, the air and water, workplace safety and all of those other quality of life issues that they consider optional.
You a$$clown, this has nothing to do with the republicans, this has to do with the importation of foreign products, whether it be toys with lead based paints form China or fruits and veggies from Mexico/SouthAmerica. We shouldn't be importing any of these products, we can certainly make our own toys and I know damn well we can grow our own fruits and veggies here. When they ship us contaminated food products, what are the consequences to them? Not a damn thing. Quit importation of stuff we can grow or make on our own.
It is uninformed people like you that are more than likely voting and giving us these liberal policies that makes everyone sit around the campfire singing songs eating chilean grapes and drnking russian vodka while sitting on our blankets made in China.
We also have a news story about a serious outbreak of paralysis in border cities on both the US and Mexican sides. It's nerve damage caused by food poisoning.
The sudden spate of GBS cases in the southwest looks to be the result of an outbreak of infections with Campylobacter bacteria, a common diarrheal foodborne illness typically caused by eating raw or undercooked poultry or meat, unpasteurized milk or contaminated water. It can also be spread by animals such as cattle and dogs.
We will probably see more of this type of thing as farmland is flooded by rivers that are contaminated by feedlots and sewage from treatment plants that have had to release raw human waste into waterways to keep the plants from failing, due to the unusual amounts of rainfall in many areas of the country.
Doesn't it make sense that importers who bring products into this country should be responsible for the safety of those products? Doesn't it make sense to inspect food sold to Americans? You may have the opinion that we should be an isolationist country, but the fact is that we are not isolationist and we never will be. We deserve to have safe products. Government regulations and government inspections help protect our food supply and increase the safety of the products we buy.
ps, You are not only wrong, you are insulting. If you have a reasonable point to make it is unnecessary to begin your rant with an insult.
For years, the U.S. Goverenment has known that produce that comes from Mexico is grown and rinsed in sewage water. Hygiene is not top priority in this and other 3rd world countries where our food comes from. All you have to do is also watch field workers picking produce in California and Arizona to see that produce is picked and packed in the fields. Nothing is washed and those doing the picking do not wash their hands after taking care of their personal business. In a lot of cases, the fields are used as toilets. Just a few years ago, a business in California was "fined" for using sewage water to water fields. This company is a national company that was bought out by a Mexican business. Until our idiots on the "hill" admit that these things are taking place, more and more of the people in our country will continue to become sick and, in some cases, will die. I have lived in both California and Arizona and know for a fact that this has been happening and will continue until we take our country back from foreign businesses who do not give a damn about us only the mighty buck!!!
I live in Central Florida where the Publix Supermarket store get papayas from Belize a small country that borders Mexico's south east border. The Belizean Papayas are very sweet and so far have been completely safe. Hope it stays that way,
Pete.
Publix supermarkets in florida sell papayas from a small country in central america called Belize located just south of mexico, they are sweet and delicious and are processed in very sanitary conditions.

Probably nobody is in the habit of washing with soap & water their fruit before eating it.
The problem is IN the fruit, not ON the fruit. Washing the surface will not solve the problem.
