How are we supposed to know that the turkey burger we get at Hardee's is cooked to 165 - do we carry a meat therm. with us? This is stupid - our food is turning to poison. I think that every time I read on the egg carton : "wash hands after handling this carton" - even the containers are contaminated?
It is all an Alien plot(i.e. teabagger party) to destroy anyone who has a thought in their own heads who don't buy into partisan politics, if you aint rich, you don't deserve to live is their mantra.
Yes, and no. It is the other kind of Alien, the Illegal one's that also work in the vegetable fields and taking a sh!t on the vegetables (sh!t and disease absorbed into the vegetables), not washing their hands and continuing to pick your vegetables (disease on the outside). So now many Illegal Aliens are working in the Meat Processing Plants doing the same unsanitary things. Damn, and all this time, I thought that it was the Rethuglican party's fault... Bottomline: Start cooking your own food at home. Use safe handling procedures. Wipe down all your counter tops and kitchen sink with bleach. Use a different paper towel to wipe down your cutting board with bleach then wash the cutting board normally. And NEVER wash your hands in the kitchen sink (water slashing things all over the clean surfaces). Funny, I've NEVER had food poisoning and all I had to do was read+follow a cookbook!
a little common sense goes a long way...most of us do not need, nor want, big brother "protecting" us from everything in the world. we do a better job ourselves anyhow.
The fact that the FDA will not disclose where the contaminated turkey was purchased from, or who the manufacturer was that produced the product (other than saying "retail locations,") shows that the American consumer takes a back seat to the potential profit loss of a major food manufacturer. Where is the level of accountability or representation to the U.S. taxpayers who are the ones that are actually funding the FDA to do the job of protecting us from these types of scenarios in the first place? Unfortunately I think that greed is the one who is really the main driver who is at the wheel.
An article on CNN a couple of years ago said that 1 in 3 times you eat out, you will contract food poisoning (including mild cases). I told my best friend, who didn't believe it. A few months ago he told me he took back that denial -- since he heard that he started monitoring how often he got sick and said that the numbers, for him, seem about right.
Me, I just don't eat out much anymore. In most restaurants (fast and sit-down) the quality has gone down and the costs have gone up. I don't want to pay more for less.
A drug resistant strain only goes to show how it is because of "science" that most likely caused this strain to be resistant,
Either this strain was created in a lab for the agriculture industry or nature is com-batting the alterations made by science and is standing up to man and it's ignorance thinking it can control nature.
They pump the turkeys full of antibiotics, so only the strongest pathogens survive. So more and more drug resistant bacteria are going to be found in your food. The only way to stop the cycle is to stop over using antibiotics, make sure that the processing plants are clean, and make sure to cook the sh*t out of your food. My wife serves my son rare hamburgers, because well done are "hockey pucks". I told her one day he might die from a food born illness, but she won't listen.
Kerry these strains evolve because of human intervention, no doubt. But place the blame fully where it belongs...on the general public of America. We pump animals full of hormones and antibiotics because we want bigger slabs of meat on our tables for less and less of the price. It's America's value system, not a scientist in the lab, that has put these selective pressures in place.
Kschlege - you can still safely eat rare burgers (I prefer medium rare, but hey to each their own) and still avoid the burnt charcoal hockey pucks...buy yourself a chuck steak and grind the meat yourself. After you're done, you simply put the grinder into the dishwasher and repeat! Problem solved, and much tastier burgers result.
Anyone find any info on which brand it was so we can check and see if we have some that may have fit the recall stash? As for why this happens, I think it's pretty obvious, factory farming keeps animals in really horrendous conditions. Filthy, filthy living conditions lead to infections leads to antibiotics leads to antibiotic resistant strains of disease. Shut down the big agra farms, or regulate the sh!t out of them so that the animals are kept clean, and eventually this problem will go away.
There is no recall at this point just a public health advisory to throughly cook all ground turkey. This advice applies even when there is no illness linked to the product. Cook ground poultry to 165...ALWAYS!!!
There is no product recall at this point. There is simply a public health advisory to throughly cook ground turkey before eating it. The advice is to cook it to minimum internal temperature of 165. This advice applies to all ground poultry, ALWAYS, not just when the product has been implicated in an outbreak. Salmonella occurs naturally in poultry, but is easily destroyed with proper handling.
I watched my sister and brother in law do the oh, stupid.
They pulled out the cutting board from the dish washer. Hand made turkey burgers on the cutting board, took the burger patties out to the charcoal grill. Cooked them thoroughly, put them on a plate. Brought them into the house. Then put the cooked burgers on the plate on top of the bottom half of the buns on the cutting board. I had eaten one of the burgers from the first batch a few minutes before. I ran not walked to the bathroom and stuck my finger down my throat to make my self vomit (I went to their liquor cabinet and started to down double shots, went to the bathroom and made myself throw up more, downed more double shots). Note: the contamination was due to the cutting board (not washed between forming the patties, putting the buns on the cutting board, the buns soaking up the raw burger pattie juices like a sponge.). Everyone else a couple of days later got "Stomach Flu" (diarrhea and vomiting) that showed up for her party, except me. I also previously warned them NOT to wash their hands in the kitchen sink (and they still do that, even at my house (when they leave I wash the kitchen sink down with bleach). Days later I went to their house and used my "Blacklight" (UV Light) to show them all the contamination in their kitchen that was making them sick.
A recall is a bit late now because it started in March.
"
WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal officials said Monday that one person has died from salmonella poisoning that appears to be linked to eating ground turkey, but the government so far has declined to say who produced the meat or initiate a recall.
Seventy-six people in 26 states have been made sick from the same strain of the disease, which the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says is resistant to many commonly prescribed antibiotics. The CDC did not say where the person who died became sick and released no details about the death.
The illnesses date back to March, and the CDC said Monday that cultures of ground turkey from four retail locations between March 7 and June 27 showed salmonella contamination. The agency said preliminary information showed that three of the samples have been linked to the same production establishment but did not name the retailers or the manufacturers."
When do the FDA/USDA plan to start acting like a regulatory body and less like food marketing boards? Our food supply isn't safe and the food quality is insulting compared to what they have in Europe, but it seems that protecting corporate profits are more important than the lives of Americans.
Michelle, there can be several factors not just animal conditions. Poor sanitary SOPs and GMPs on the processing line could have been contributing factors as well. Faulty equipment leading to insanitary conditions, etc.
It would be nice if the articles about contaminated things would include the brands. Half the time they don't which makes me wonder why they're even bothering running a bit on it. Oh. Right. Sensationalism.
They said they didn't know which brand it is. My best bet is to not buy ground turkey until they find out and trash any you have at home to be safe. I just through away two packs, hard to do but I don't want my family to get sick!
People, this crap has been around for decades. The secret to NOT getting infected is to COOK it until it's done.If you don't know what done looks like, then burn it,flip it,and burn it again!Cooked is dead!If you want raw eggs, poultry, pork, wild game,or beef, you definitely need sex (no condoms) with plenty of strangers, too! Why not live on the edge?
Not exactly. The salmonella of 50 years ago has been replaced by a larger variety of increasing strength and ever-changing componenets thanks to the 24 million tons (that's right) of antibiotics we pump the animals we eat (even heallthy ones) every year. While cooking your meat to recommended temperatures cuts your chances of getting sick, it does not eliminate them, especially when you are dealing with meat infected beyond levels that are approved.
The headline should read "people get sick from not cooking their turkey". Don't fall for this, all turkey in a raw state has salmonella. If you don't cook it to proper temp you will get it. Don't blame the turkey, blame the chef! For all of you who want to get on this band wagon....you just don't understand food safety
however, the levels of salmonella found in 'uncontaminated' ground turkey is low enough that under cooking it does not cause illness, evidenced by the fact that there are only outbreaks. so this particular ground turkey exceeds safe levels deemed ok by the FDA and or carries a strain of salmonella that is difficult to defend against.
the best practice as you say is to religiously overcook your food a bit, you do not have to burn it, and go certified organic...even frozen entrees.
We just had an illness ourbreak confirmed to an organic product. Organic doesn't necessarily mean it's illness free. Recent organic recalls include alpha sprouts, baby food, and others. Just search organic food recalls and read.
Unfortunately, it would seem that you have the limited knowledge on food safety as even the most pro-meat lobbyists would tell you that no amount of safe cooking is ever a guarantee against getting sick from meat. Believe it or not, some strands of bacteria have grown so strong that if they are in your meat, you will get sick no matter what your meticulous preparation methods may be.
Why no mention of which brand? OH OH MSNBC wants to protect their advertising revenue.....I mean the labels probably right there in front of you....lost your reading glasses....oh can't quite make it out....good thing corporate America is looking out for corporate America. Yes someone died but protecting the business is more important...we understand...I mean they're already dead mentioning the brand won't change that right....good call...sarcasm and spite/off ....and we wonder where the Chinese get it.
I think we need to get used to this. The FDA could use more inspectors and more power to go after bad companies, but with smaller goverment, less funding, and the push for less business regulation that is taking over the country, i think were going to be on our own very soon.
These food problems have been going on for a while without cutbacks. Maybe Obama can loose a few of his czars and they can hire more inspectors. Really, just cook the meat properly...
The government has been gutting the laws for over a decade now. I'm an Inspector that works for the FSIS, so I know. At the plant I currently work at I wouldn't touch anything that comes out of it. When I try to enforce rules I get in trouble.
I'm afraid you're right. The republicans want to eliminate many of the inspection programs as a nuisance to business. In Florida, our governor has already done that sort of thing on a state level. If we don't want to be at the mercy of unscrupulous businesses people had better vote in the next election to get the TEA party people back out of office!
They have not been able to determine what brand of turkey is envolved. People are sick and the common link seems to be ground turkey. Thus the warning /reminder to cook turkey to 165. If they thought they knew the brand, container size, lot numbers they would have told people.
Many would say without a clear indication of which brand was involved that nothing should have been said.
It is not that food borne outbreaks are more common - just the opposite. They happy less often then they used to. Does a car accident in your home town make national headlines? No . Why? because they happen in every community on an all most daily basis. Food out breaks used to be that way. We now have a 24 hr/7 days a week news cycle you hear about things happening now that years ago you never heard about.
Cook all pork and poultry products done. That is the only safe way. As for the drug resistant strains, that is from the over use of antibiotics., both in people and food animals. This is scary.
How about cooking the meat or food thoroughly, it's basic common sense. Cook your food thoroughly or risk getting food poisoning. It's got nothing to do with big Agrafarms or any other vegan nonsense. Just cook your food thoroughly. It is what they did back when they had no modern conveniences like refrigerators and microwave ovens or even deep freezers. Most cases of food poisoning comes from the wrong preparation or mishandling of food.
Yes you have to cook and handle your food carefully. I wonder if turkeys, cattle , and other animals confined in cages and feed lots stomping around in their own excrement might have something to do with it?
They tested and found salmonella in several of the ground turkey packages. I get that if cooked properly, you should be good but I wouldn't knowing buy these products then.
It's disappointing in this day and age and with all the tested that can/should be done we hear about recalls on foods constantly.
well i read the article ..enough info, til more is available...too know not to eat turkey...i was fix'n to have a turkey sandwich...when i read the article...so if the turkey i have is bad i won't get sick from it...so i'm thankful...wish more people were...
There you go. Those of you chanting "just cook it properly" have no idea what you are talking about. Seriously. Go read about modern meat production and its consequences. You want to eat meat safely? Kill, slaughter, and cook it yourself. If you don't, you are taking a gamble everytime you eat. I'm not saying this is feasible or reasonable, but as a fact it is THE safest way to consume meat.
Our city's outreach program (food pantry) regularly gives out packaged ground turkey. This stuff is usually donated from supermarkets. I bet it is usually outdated too. I hope they stop handing out the ground turkey. I guess this is the turkey's revenge for not having it as the national symbol as Benjamen Franklin wanted. Instead congress voted for the eagle......
I think we need to get used to this. The FDA could use more inspectors and funding, but with smaller goverment and the push for less goverment regulations on business, i think we will see more of this. If its produce, wash it, if its meat, poultry, pork or fish cook to proper temperature. More and more as the goverment gets smaller were on our own.
No word yet from CDC or USDA about what brands are implicated. We'll get that to you as soon as we can. Obviously, we'd like the answer to that question, too.
They pump all animals full of antibiotics........Antibiotics used in humans causes a disease called C-diff, which by the way many doctors fail to properly diagnose............so, is it possible that this new strain of Salmonella is a derivitive of C-diff in animals since they receive so many antibiotics!
no, you're talking about two completely different genera, Salmonella and Clostridium. im actually not entirely sure what you mean by one being a derivative of the other but no amount of antibiotic will turn one species into another. it’s similar to thinking by giving turkeys antibiotics you will turn them into chickens, if i am understanding you correctly. one benefit of our normal intestinal bacteria is that it takes up space and uses available nutrients to prevent other possibly pathogenic bacteria from living inside us. using antibiotics can decrease the number of normal intestinal bacteria allowing Clostridium difficile to thrive in its place. i have to disagree with your statement about doctors failing to diagnose C. difficile. it's extremely common and easy to diagnose with patient history and a number of testing methods.
hey ...i'm just glad to know the turkey meat ...may be bad...i ain't eating any till i find out..what brand or location etc...go cold turkey with the turkey...play it safe...
yet another turkey killed someone.we need stricter turkey control laws in this country!I'm amazed that anyone can just walk into a store and buy as many turkeys as they want! no permits,no fingerprints, and no registration of the turkey!we need to repeal the 2nd amendment (the right to bear drumsticks!)
I assume the weirdo group you are referring to would be Congress. Of course they'll debate this like the debt issue, and be deadlocked because they'll only want to ban certain parts of the turkey.
Republicans will only want to ban the left wing, and Democrats will only want to ban the right wing. And the big gobbler in the white house will threaten veto unless it is 'stuffed' just the way he wants it...
did you know that any turkey you've eaten (unless you've gotten one right from a heritage farm - doubt it - only a couple exist in the US) then you have eaten a turkey that has been genetically modified so that it cannot have sex? I don't know who exactly you are calling a weirdo, but I will gladly call anyone who is willing to eat such an animal one.
disgusted....i hunt wild turkeys in New York state.I'm pretty sure no one has altered them.and by the way,my original comment was a joke on the gun control lobbyists. gun control,USE TWO HANDS ! that's control enough !
People get sick from salmonella because 1. it's concentrated in the animal/animal product and 2. people don't cook to high enough temperatures. We all have bacteria inside us, it's all over the place, it's becomes hazardous at high levels.
Animals get "pumped" with antibiotics to keep it healthy, just like people when they're sick. No, antibiotic-resistant salmonella is more than likely NOT an animal c-diff. Strains change all the time..it's called adapting and surviving.
As far as what brand(s) were involved, um, who cares? People should cook properly, everything's got bacteria in it, people. It's been around forever. That's why we have cooking guidelines to follow that are released by health boards. It's not to look cute, stop blaming farms and plants and stores.
True, but there is something to be said the increasing number of antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria that have infiltrated our food system due to poor habits and current farming techniques.
True John, but if the antibiotic dose is too low or not given long enough to kill all the bacteria, the bacteria can morph into a more resistent strain.
That is true; however, that only highlights why this is such an issue. You can give high doses of antibiotics, but eventually bacteria are going to develop resistance being that they are living organisms with sloppy replication methods. In other words, bacteria will morph in to a more resistant strain regardless...over time.
It seems to me that food in this country is getting more dangerous to eat every day. Food and drug want to add anything to this?
Cook your food well, especially hamburger.
Anything tar tar is for idiots and roulette wheels.
How are we supposed to know that the turkey burger we get at Hardee's is cooked to 165 - do we carry a meat therm. with us? This is stupid - our food is turning to poison. Eat fast food ...and die.

True about Salmonella, but NOT TRUE in regards to C. perferinges induced food poisoning
just saying....
I hope your right, its about time that we start taking care of ourselves again.
The government has been gutting the laws for over a decade now. I'm an Inspector that works for the FSIS, so I know. At the plant I currently work at I wouldn't touch anything that comes out of it. When I try to enforce rules I get in trouble.
Get used to it people.
All the goverment needs to do is impose a HEFTY fine and the companies will soon adjust the processes to minimize/eliminate the problem.
All you have to do is cook it right! When its brown it's cookin, when it's black it's done.
There are strains of salmonella that can't be cooked out...and no..it has to do with poor processing practices
They tested and found salmonella in several of the ground turkey packages. I get that if cooked properly, you should be good but I wouldn't knowing buy these products then.
It's disappointing in this day and age and with all the tested that can/should be done we hear about recalls on foods constantly.
What brand?
All the contamination, disease, etc., BETTER REPORTING, Article fails to ID Brands, Packers, etc.!!
Journalism schools today are worse than my 8th grade class.... Fails: Who, What, When, Where, Why
well i read the article ..enough info, til more is available...too know not to eat turkey...i was fix'n to have a turkey sandwich...when i read the article...so if the turkey i have is bad i won't get sick from it...so i'm thankful...wish more people were...
odd that deaths were involved and no news of it on the usda site....???
That's why I kill all my meat.
~ Ted Nugent
It was the wild turkey Franklin wanted for the national symbol. The "Tame" market turkey and the North American wild turkey are two different birds.
Wild turkey meat is darker and tastier.
i have drunk wild turkey...and it will make you strut...and shake your tail feathers...yea-haw...
Hi folks,
No word yet from CDC or USDA about what brands are implicated. We'll get that to you as soon as we can. Obviously, we'd like the answer to that question, too.
thanks for the quick new's....maybe it will stop those ...who have access to the product from eating it...till they find out if it's safe...thank's

What Plant did this meat come from and under what labels was it sold.
Article is lacking important information.
Question for all the science folks out there:
They pump all animals full of antibiotics........Antibiotics used in humans causes a disease called C-diff, which by the way many doctors fail to properly diagnose............so, is it possible that this new strain of Salmonella is a derivitive of C-diff in animals since they receive so many antibiotics!
no, you're talking about two completely different genera, Salmonella and Clostridium. im actually not entirely sure what you mean by one being a derivative of the other but no amount of antibiotic will turn one species into another. it’s similar to thinking by giving turkeys antibiotics you will turn them into chickens, if i am understanding you correctly. one benefit of our normal intestinal bacteria is that it takes up space and uses available nutrients to prevent other possibly pathogenic bacteria from living inside us. using antibiotics can decrease the number of normal intestinal bacteria allowing Clostridium difficile to thrive in its place. i have to disagree with your statement about doctors failing to diagnose C. difficile. it's extremely common and easy to diagnose with patient history and a number of testing methods.
hey ...i'm just glad to know the turkey meat ...may be bad...i ain't eating any till i find out..what brand or location etc...go cold turkey with the turkey...play it safe...
yet another turkey killed someone.we need stricter turkey control laws in this country!I'm amazed that anyone can just walk into a store and buy as many turkeys as they want! no permits,no fingerprints, and no registration of the turkey!we need to repeal the 2nd amendment (the right to bear drumsticks!)
roflmao! But, omg, don't tell one of those weirdo groups, they'll start a new study on the taxpayers dollar to find a way to ban turkeys!
People. Relax.
Dirka,
That is true; however, that only highlights why this is such an issue. You can give high doses of antibiotics, but eventually bacteria are going to develop resistance being that they are living organisms with sloppy replication methods. In other words, bacteria will morph in to a more resistant strain regardless...over time.
