There was a time (not so long ago…in fact, still somewhat today) when poor people ate fish, rice, beans and veggies and stayed lean while the rich got fat on foie gras, beef, high-fat cheese, etc., etc., and et cetera.
When you see what the average “poor” American eats (not poor by international standards…or even by the unknown/unmentionable true USA poverty in “Indian Reservations” and really poor regions like many in Appalachia), it’s hard to argue that fish, rice, beans and veggies are more expensive than beer, chips, cigarettes, Twinkies, carbonated drinks, beer, more cigarettes, beer, pizza, cigarettes and beer.
More "entitlement issues" from the very liberal state of Washington. What a bunch of BUNK! "We need help from the government to tell us what to do, how to live and how much more we can get from the RICH!"
I believe that, technically, in this context, it is a bunch of "balogna." The term "bunk" more appropriately applies to all the political promises of wealth distribution, equal rights, peace, prosperity and security.
What in the he** do you need the government involved for? They arfe supposed to be teaching this stuff at HOME, in the schools, on the menu's in restaurants and everywhere else according to HHS. It's not working because it never has. Parents saying eat your veggies is the only way kids learn. The gov't just spends more money to their friends and supporters for programs that don't work(obviously) but sure pad the pockets of the administrations...
This is the SOS - Pablo Monsivais says the government should help- BS! This is the reason the country is in the shape it is in. The government is involved in everything. NO! The poor can do like the rest of us - work or grow your own food, hunt & fish. There is no cost to do that. It cost more to go to the fast foods that they go to. Or how about when you are in line in the grocery and you see the welfare card being used to buy steaks, chips, sodas, and other junk that is not a neccesity. People need to take responsibilty for themselves and STOP relying on others to help them. And the bleeding hearts need to tighten up there support. Insted of supporting the poor, teach them and make them do something in their life. I know this sounds harsh. If you do not like what the BIG business is doing then get off your butt and do something constructive about it. STOP complaining about them and saying they should pay more taxes to support everyone else. They did not get rich by asking for handouts. Come on people, the freedoms we have - you can still build your own life. And no I am not a business owner I am employed in a small business. We are working only 32hrs a week and it is not looking any better. But I still do it what I have to to survive. That is what everyone needs to do and stop relying on the GOVERNMENT. Margret Thatcher quote - "Eventually you will run out of other peoples money" My Rant- Thank you
I love watching the righties get their panties in a bunch. I also think the article is off base in several respects but not all. Pasta of various kinds is cheap and poor people eat it a lot. However as someone pointed out, real food is cheaper than junk food.
But I do love to watch you guys fly around the room....

Yet the goverment says that the cost of living has not went up in two years so there was no increase in goverment checks ,I could have excepted the fact if you would have told the truth and just said well the goverment broke and we cant afford to give an increase.
Its times were me and my daughter have no food or strech out the month on 5/1.00 noodles but the doctor says she has high blood pressure and high colerstol becuse of the salt that's in noodles
So you tell me how to eat healthy and were can I afford it WHEN WE DON'T EAT LUNCH CAN'T AFFORD A SNACK OR ANY THING MORE THEN THAT BASIC MEAL I JUST CALCULATED FOR YOU.....
RealTalkinTx, I can see that you're doing your best to make sense of all the blather thrown at us, but your choices aren't healthy!
That's a lot of eggs, bacon, bread and other heavy carbs compared to what I was referring to.
I know that relatively few people can grow their own food. And maybe you're not in a bulk food coop, or even near a place where you can buy big quantities of cheap food (beans, rice). I don't know your circumstances at all.
But I do know that people around the world who've got a whole lot less money than you do can eat a more heart-healthy diet!
I don't mean to preach on this. But it is a fact that some of the cheapest foods (even including dog food - 20% of it is eaten by people, you know) are among the healthiest.
I think your math is waaaay off unless you are eating 15 DOZEN eggs, 15 packs of bacon, 15 loaves of bread, 15 (I'm guessing gallons from the price) gallons of milk every month, in which case I'm not surprised about the high blood pressure.
I'm doing this off of my Kroger's weekly add. Why not try-
5 doz egg per month @ 1.29- 6.45 a month. That's one each every day.
3 loaves of Nature's Pride with extra fiber @ 2.99- 8.97 a month. Two slices of toast each. Make an egg sandwich.
4 gallons of milk @ 3.89- 15.56 a month. An 8oz glass a day for both of you.
2 3lb bags of oranges @ 3.99- 7.98 a month. About 2 small oranges each every day instead of juice.
Breakfast for a month total- $38.96
4 16oz jars of smooth peanut butter @ $1.67 each- $6.68 a month. 2 tablespoons each every day.
60 apples @ 5 oz each and $1.90lb- $35.63 a month. This number will be much cheaper if you buy the bulk bags. This is if you bought them loose by weight. 1 apple each, every day.
Snack every day for a month- $42.31
60 Michellena's lite microwave meals @ $1 each- $60 a month. One meal each, per day.
Lunch every day for a month- $60
6 2.5lb bags of chicken@ 6.99- $41.94 per month. That's a 4oz serving each, every day.
30 bags of mixed veggies @ $1- $30 a month. Half a bag each, every day.
15 bags of greens@ $2- $30 a month. A quarter of a bag each, every day.
10 containers of cherry tomatoes @ $1.50- $15 a month. A small handful each, every day.
4 bottles of Kraft dressing @ $3.79- $15.56 a month. 2 tablespoons each per day which is the recommended serving size.
Dinner for 30 nights- $132.50
That's $273.77 a month for a lot less saturated fat and sodium and more fiber.
show me the price of healthy foods that you recommend times 30 days show me in the dollor since if you commenting like i showed you and baby i had a dog his food was more than mines 20.00 for a 20 pound bag that i strech the whole month
Sounds like you are having a tuff time and I feel for you, but how are you able to get connected on the internet? I know there is a cost there. Sounds like you need to get your priorities in check.
Here is my meal for a day
Morning: Juice - 1-pc of toast - Vitamin
Break time - One fiber bar - Coffee
Lunch: 1 Pack of crackers - 1 2.5 oz of tuna - one snack cake - Water
Snack: Apple & Bannana
Dinner: Salad - one Veggie - one Meat (chicken/ pork / Beans)
I do not know the exact cost, due to the fact I just buy what Items are on sale at the time and save as much as I can.
Help, my whole paycheck goes toward my mortgage and credit card payments. I can't afford to eat healthy, so just make it cheaper for us!
Unfortunatly, this has become the American way! Pathetic is what it is.
If people would just get their priorities in line and take care of themselves, this wouldn't be such an issue. So quit whinning, suck it up and figure it out!
I live on a farm with lots of game-filled woods. We raise chickens for meat and eggs and have a huge garden for our own needs. So I can’t use my family for an example.
Do you have any property at all? People grow amazing amounts of food even in city lots. If not, do you have a nearby Chinese or Mexican grocery store? If they serve an actual ethnic community, they often have really cheap, healthy food like protein-rich black soybeans (all the amino/fatty acids/protein your body needs), tofu, other beans (refried other otherwise) and rice.
Brown rice, bulk whole wheat flour (the less-expensive store-bought whole wheat is often pretty bad), oats (not the prepackaged sugar bombs…just oats), frozen veggies/bagged spinach, canned tuna, edamame/soybeans, and any kind of lettuce other than iceberg.
Iceberg lettuce is worthless.
You can grow an endless supply of lettuce hydroponically, even in an apartment. A friend of ours grows it in his basement with a fluorescent grow light.
I could see how my 'healthy diet' might be more expensive than that of my coworkers. But what they don't examine is the HEALTH costs associated with the less healthy one. I don't get sick, see the doctor once a year, and don't take any medicine. However if I lived off hot pockets and chicken nuggets I think that wouldn't be the case. The cost of meds, doctor's visits and potentially serious medical problems like diabetes will eat up that $300 difference FAST.
Well, when I see skimmed (fat free) milk selling at my local stores for $3, sometimes $4 a gallon (3.78 liters), and then see Coke/Pepsi/etc. being sold for ¢.99 for two liters on sale nearly all the time, I get a wee bit disillusioned. When avocados cost $2 apiece, but I can get loads of chocolate for that amount.
This will not change. Fresh, healthy, unprocessed food will never be inexpensive ever again.
Ellywhite, you're missing the forest for the trees...
NOTHING will be inexpensive again. Our dollar has been devalued to spit by the so-called "Fed." We've been voting our money away for a hundred years now...
more class warfare claptrap
Pitying the poor is big business. Lots of people make fat salaries as tax-subsidized "not-for-profit" professional tear-jerkers.
Healthy eating is actually quite a bit cheaper than what most people are eating.
There was a time (not so long ago…in fact, still somewhat today) when poor people ate fish, rice, beans and veggies and stayed lean while the rich got fat on foie gras, beef, high-fat cheese, etc., etc., and et cetera.

Really? A couple hundred pounds of potatoes each month? For only two people?
180 eggs per month, Turkey bacon every day?
The food you list is pushing 4000 calories per day, and certainly aren't the healthiest possible choices.
