Did they suspect the worker had taken a dump in the food? Come on, this sounds like an overreaction to some "diseased" person, like just walking in the restaurant put you at risk. THis isnt Outbreak.
If he failed to wash his hands (or didn't wash them well) he could contaminate the food he handled with fecal germs. These could even grow in the food.
My neighbor got infected this way - spent fourteen days with a horrible stomach ache - lost fifteen pounds during that time. Some people die from these infections.
Steve I did receive my Hep A shot for free under my current private insurance. And I live in NC. So guess I'm protected from this without expensive government overhauls and mandates.
@Michael. If you have private insurance, YOU already pay for the uninsured to have access to medical care. Hospitals charge your insurance company outrageous prices for small services to cover costs racked up by the uninsured; then your insurance company passes those costs along to you. Wouldn't you rather have a system that is open and honest about these things, instead of one that tries to pretend that only the wealthy have access to health care?
One day a coworker and I walked into the office bathroom. The smell and sounds from her stall indicated a "number 2." I heard a paper wrapper opening and then the sound of a sanitary disposal unit clanking. I was washing my hands when my coworker exited the stall. She smiled, opened her purse, and proceeded to re-apply makeup. She walked out behind me without washing her hands. She was a white American citizen.
Gotta love those Americans who stereotype. Where in the article was it even hinted that the infected worker was not American, legal or otherwise? So Bezoar, since we're stereotyping, I guess your comment would make you a right wing bigot, or possibly even a neo Nazi.
Well...ummm....no, don't think there are any reliable statistics on this 044110...
AND...note the worker reported his or her infection (not something someone who might be afraid of being sent back to his or her country of origin typically would do)
For all that worker knows, he or she could have been infected by a co-worker sooooo....what would the immigration status matter anyway...legal citizens can carry and spread Hep A too....
to not get it again. hep A is not a chronic hepatitis. the virus is gone after a while. nearly everyone recovers from it. only people with chronic liver problems (which can include hep. B or hep. C) are at higher risk. less than 1 in 1000 people develop a serious problem. so you can get reinfected over and over again if you are exposed to it. esp. if you travel to other countries a lot, you might want to get the vaccine.
My ex was a police detective back in the 80s. In a drug bust, he picked up a paper bag and got poked with a needle in the bag. Three days later, two of the druggies had come down with hepatitis C (which is a whole lot worse, life threatening, much worse than Hep A). We were scared for months. he never did come down with symptoms and is hep free. But its scarey to go through these things.
Interesting - I didn't think you could be immunized after you were infected.
I thought that was the point of immunization - controlled exposure so you could build your antibodies.... so if you were already exposed... you'd have to be tested to determine if you were infected at the time of exposure before you could be immunized or vaccinated.
They do the same thing with Rabies - if immunized soon enough after infection the body has time to build up immunity while the disease incubates.
Sometimes people receive "shots" - when testing won't show the disease - but exposure was possible. A local kid was bitten by a wild squirrel - they could not find the animal - so the kid got the "shots" as a precaution.
I find it amusing that anytime there is any problem, the first question in many people's mind is "was this person an illegal alien".
Going by that logic, I am wondering if the US Congress was and is run by illegal aliens since the last 15-20 years. After all ,the economic mess today is a result of bad decisions and choices by the Congress and President since the last 15-20 years.
Cygnas_x-1: I laughted too...but come to think of it NONE of them are around ...????Hep A strikes yet again !!!!! But your family , when you're hear, even if you hopped a fence or swam the Rio Grand ...Manga !
"When you're here, you're family."
Congratulations! We are now a Third World Country!
But dang it if we aren't the best darn third world country there is!
p.s. you could have all received Hep A shots for free if we had passed Universal Healthcare.

I thought maybe Pamela Anderson had dined there. I think she orders the sausage stuffed crabs with white sauce?
Pamela Anderson is either a vegan or a vegetarian of some type.
Free? I don't think so. Someone has to pay for it. It won't be Obama, Michelle, Bozo Bill, or Hillary.

Was the infected worker an illegal alien?
I wonder if the Aztecs, Incas and Mayans once thought the same thing.
Cygnus - I almost spit coffee over my keyboard after reading that comment!
Nice irony!
Was the infected worker an illegal alien?
What?!!

So, what's your point Bezoar?!
Thats some good fiction
@Toni: Ewwwww! Ick. Gross.
I once saw a guy walk into a "port-o-pot" at the Indy 500. He had a hot dog and a beer. He came out with half a beer.
Gotta love those Americans who stereotype. Where in the article was it even hinted that the infected worker was not American, legal or otherwise? So Bezoar, since we're stereotyping, I guess your comment would make you a right wing bigot, or possibly even a neo Nazi.
I went into a portapotty once with a joint. I came out staggering.
All you eat Soup, Salad, Bread-sticks and Hep A.
Are you sure that's a meatball in my spaghetti???
Notice all the cases of food problems mirror the number of illegal immigrants in this country?
No, it's from greater enforcement and reporting.
Go hate illegals elsewhere.

Why would you be immunized after being exposed?
Because your body can still have time to build up immunity - before the disease has time to reproduce enough to kill you.
Even if the vaccine is bogus you still get avid fans that follow anything they are told to do.

B I L L T...... E T L E YYYYYYYYYYYYYY: Bill Tetley.
Yeah, yeah. I know. This could have happened anywhere. But, man, I'm so glad I don't live there any more! What a hell-hole.
I bet its the Tea party at fault.

If they didn't spend so much time sniffing his poo, it might not be such a problem...

I love their terminology of fear....."May have been exposed"
Lets vaccinate everyone just to be sure. Like that is not going to cause problems itself.
I do not eat out so even if fear mongers do they get an added bonus with their meal.
I am glad you do not eat out. You seem so angry that I dont think it would be a good experience to dine with you.

wow i was hoping for legimate and relevant responses to the actual TOPIC...guess that was asking for too much...inbreds
