Is this guy's lawyer saying he was "insane" because his estranged wife was having a lesbian relationship? If so, what the hell did his children and grandmother do to incite his "insanity"? Seems more likely he was "insanely" jealous, which is no reason to murder anyone, let alone his own family.
There needs to be a radical changing of the laws, one that does not allow a murderer to use insanity as a exclusionary defense.
Ending another person's life, short of defense of your own, arguably takes a certain degree of insanity/instability in the first place, and once someone has crossed that line I don't feel they should be able to skirt the consequences with an insanity plea.
We house many criminals, murderers and otherwise, who are required to take psychiatric medications, and many of them act violently when they are off of them. Who is to say what level of insanity is punishable by prison and what level warrants psychiatric care in a state hospital? In my mind, every muderer should be held to the exact same level of accountability, regardless of their mental state at the time of killing someone.
