The reality is if you're between 20 and 40 you shouldn't be obese. Just like you should tell your children; go outside. Moderate exercise curbs your appetite.
Yeah, you go ahead and tell that to my genes and my thyroid gland.
I exercise, I eat well and in moderation, and I take vitamins and appropriate medications. Some people really are just preprogrammed to be fat. Shut up and deal with it.
The message that "Fat is unhealthy" should never be silenced just because it reminds some of their failures.
CJ
No one should have to "deal with" your misfortune but you. We will though; In the form of rising health care costs and the pulled back muscle's of America's Fire fighters when they have to lift your carcass out of your house someday. No one feels sorry for you. Just disgusted.
I bet you could eat better, exercise harder and stop lying to yourself about your life style----- if you wanted to.
Oh boy here we go, fat people that see this article are going to go ballistic and lecture the Vine about how they are big-boned, have a genetic disease, a chemical imbalance or a metabolic disorder that FORCES them to be obese. Nobody, it seems, is personally responsible for what and how much they eat.
I think the fact that obesity is potentially harmful to the embryo is hardly going to change that kind of attitude. Americans love their obesity and see it as a birthright (literally). Unfortunately, the only way to change attitudes in this morbidly obese country is to have an anti-smoking style education campaign to inform people that they CHOOSE to be fat and do in fact have control over it. Ok, well except for a tiny minority that actually do have medical conditions.
I hardly think that pointing out that not everybody has such an easy time achieving society's unrealistic beauty ideals (which doctors will tell you is unhealthy anyway, especially when it becomes an obsession) is going ballistic.
On the other hand, being pompous, righteous, ignorant and victim-blamey makes you look like the hysterical jerk.
This article has nothing to do with the media's unrealistic expectations for bodies, but instead solely to report the correlation between a mother's body fat and it's ability to negatively impact the fetus. While it isn't fair to make a passive attack on overweight people assuming that they'll have an immature reaction to this evidence, it is ignorant to claim that a scientific article is in anyway promoting an unrealistic beauty ideal. This article is about learning how to protect the health of a fetus, not insult other people. If anyone wants to troll or throw around insults I'm sure theres a kindergarten classroom where one can find people whose maturity is a better match.
On the other hand, being pompous, righteous, ignorant and victim-blamey makes you look like the hysterical jerk.
If it is pompous, self-righteous and victim-blamey to point out scientific fact then I am certainly all of the above. The truth is if I ate the absolute crap that I see most people eating I'd be an obese fat-body myself. But I don't, I restrict my calories... I eat whole grains, veggies, fruits and I don't eat unhealthy meats. I don't eat at McDonalds, Burger King, or any other fast food joint. In fact, I don't eat out more than once a month, period. No, I have taken responsibility depsite the fact that it isn't "easy" but I am 6'0 and 170 pounds and I'm over 45 years old. I lift weights and do cardio so my body can reach a healthy steady-state without binging and dieting. But, I do eat a restricted calorie diet, just as fat people out there reading this thread should do.
The fact is there are a million excuses but your brain can do anything it wants to do - unless perhaps you are in the tiny minority with an actual disease or condition that forces you to be obese. The fact is that by being obese you are hurting yourself so if it hurts your feelings that someone points out that being morbidly obese is unhealthy and non-hygienic (yes I've seen what grows in those fat rolls) and sets a poor example for children.
I don't want people to feel horrible about their "body image" but I think it's about time to stop pretending like fat is beautiful - it isn't and it's killing you and your kids.
why is it that it is rich unweight woman that are the most likey have to have help creating a child while the socalled obse anyting over 18% body fat can have plenty of childern?
Exactly, Pat! For all the Newsvine "expert" fat-haters out there, you'd think this country would be 99% UNDER-weight. Since they are all SOOOOO perfect.../sarc.
Do a little research on how leptin changes synapses. Stop reading the news and start reading the medical journals funded by obesity researchers, you might learn something.
Also, look up "pregorexia"--we really do not need more of those. I guarantee that anorexia during pregnancy is worse for a fetus (assuming it makes it there--this article didn't discus birth defects, it was actually talking about fertility problems; when they tell me the rates of birth defects in infants born to fat mothers versus those born to thin mothers, corrected for other factors, then I'll listen) than just sitting there being fat.
We are in the midst of an obesity epidemic and you're still defending it? Sorry, but people need to wake up, take personal responsibility for a change, and do something about your health. Things have come to a ridiculous state in which Americans are in denial about their health and lifestyle.
Overlord forgets the skinny gene. Some people can eat him under the table and not gain a pound.
Not only do I not forget but I happen to have an advanced degree in molecular genetics so I understand this perhaps even better than you do. The fact is I don't have a skinny gene and I have to work hard to keep fit. This includes exercise, weight lifting, and eating a vegetarian restricted calorie diet. I also happen to work with many sick obese people in my work and almost without exception fat people blame everything and everyone except themselves for their condition. I think it's about time we start talking frankly about the devastating consequences to health, health insurance and the economy as a result of people acting so irresponsibly with their eating habits and (lack of) exercise.
sorry, overlord. Guess you know more than anybody else. Seeing that when I was in the navy, the people that ate the most are the ones that hit the gym the most and the rest of cut our calirios back to under 1500 and workeed on the flight deck 18 hours and lost only about 30 pounds total over 6 months. and yes we had 3 heartattacks all by supper fit people their heart just stopped but we save them and sent them off to germany where they got told to cut the exericse and the "special diets" and eat three square meals a day.
really according to the Docs of the good old USA anything under 10% body fat is unhealthy.me being at 25% body fat makes me obse by your standards but fits me just fine. Now lets go for a hike and see you can last longer the "fat man" or the super thin unrealistic model that has sticks for arms........
Mad Magazine had it right; Fat people who blame their weight on their glands are right, they have eaten so much all their lives their glands weigh 100 pounds each :-p
Ha ha, that's funny :) I stared open mouthed at an old friend today as she ate an entire appetizer by herself and then had three beers with a wet burrito and two bowls of chips all the while telling me how hard it is to have thyroid problems and have people treat her like it her fault shes overweight. I could have used that mental image, maybe it would have made me smile and close the fly trap a little!
Jeez Heather, I would hate to have you as a friend. Your idea of friendship must be terribly warped, and shallow at that. She could in theory lose a bunch of weight, you on the other hand have your personality programed in and are stuck with it. Eech.
So high levels of fatty acids in the ovaries cause damage to the eggs. That's... all we know here. These eggs didn't even get to the embryo stage--they were tested when they were blastocysts. There's a limited amount of information we can extrapolate from this. Does this mean fat mothers have higher rates of birth defects? We don't know. Does this mean losing weight would be good for the baby? We don't know. This is such preliminary research it's not even worth reporting on yet. They aren't even testing on humans. They aren't even testing on embryos, fetuses, or infants!
I think it's time for us all to go learn some media literacy and stop hating on the fatties until we actually know anything.
Also, perhaps some research on what being underweight does to eggs? This is a spectrum here, it might be a good idea to test more than one end of it. You know, for science.
Yes, you are somewhat correct that in the absence of other cited material, this is a relatively isolated report. Likewise, MSNBC has, more than likely, picked up on this report solely due to their own extrapolation of the consequences in mainstream diseases such as obesity.
As you probably know, PubMed has over 7000 reports that deal with obesity in pregnancy. But you fail to have read any of the other myriad reports in Medline. There is a huge body of evidence (either using meta-analysis or model organisms) that relate to poor pregnancy outcomes and the BMI of the mother. Anything from congenital defects, to genome predictions, epigenetic regulation, preeclampsia, delivery complications, and so forth.
Further, how on earth do you propose studying the effects found in the journal in humans? This is precisely why we have model organisms!! Swine, cows, and mice are used for obesity research routinely, precisely for the reason that we CAN'T test these in utero effects in humans!!!
And once again, there ARE articles on the implications of being underweight during gestation. Many, many articles (again, a quick PubMed search yields over 700). Perhaps you should read them, otherwise, don't you think the irony rests with you promoting "media literacy"?
This article is full of gaping holes in logic. First, the study is in cattle and not humans. Human gestation is very different from that of Cattle. Second, fat does not equal fatty acids. Fatty acids is one of the sources of fuel for the human body. The correlation between weight and fatty acids and fetal outcomes is tenuous at best. They injected saturated fatty acids into the ovaries. What do you think is going to happen when you mess with the biological process with outside chemicals? Supposedly these Saturated Fatty Acids exist in some obese women. They do not say all fat women have this, but that it is common. It's common to be left handed, but the majority of people are not. Commonality does not equal everyone. Obese women get pregnant every day, have healthy babies, and do not end up with mutant children.
MSNBC, honestly stop publishing these silly articles in the health section of your website. This study has less to do with health and more to do with science and kind of stupid science in any case.
OMG - more blaming the victim. Anyone who thinks fat people just need to get over it, get thin and stop wasting health care money needs a serious wake up call. Obesity is caused by dieting, metabolic disorders, certain medications and all kinds of physical, physiological and even psychological factors. Telling someone to lose weight is the same as telling them not to breath. It's idiotic. Grow up, read the literature and find out that obesity is a symptom of our screwed up views on body image and health.
For those of you saying that being fat is disgusting and gross and a choice, you obviously have never had to deal with being overweight. I am 22 years old, I just went through Gastric Bypass surgery and I will tell you that it's not an easy thing for an overweight person to (a) admit that it's their issue (not their genetics) or anything of that matter and (b) give up food. A good amount of people are 'addicted' to food. I was I used it as an emotional comfort, if I was happy, I ate, if I was sad, I ate, if I was angry, I ate etc. I was diagnosed with Diabetes II in April and that made it click for me, that I HAD to lose weight. Sometimes people don't have that click, its a HELL OF A LOT EASIER to NOT do anything, is that right. HELL NO. Do I believe that being overweight is socially acceptable or should it be? HELL NO. It's no way to live a life, I'm down 50lbs already and I feel SO much better about myself, I started going to a gym and its awesome. I guess why I'm writing this is to say, it's not as easy as saying OH! I'm fat... no more food for me! It's a hard decision, its a completely different lifestyle. Can it be done? Yes, absolutely. But badgering people and making them feel like crap, will not get anyone anywhere...
Yes it is hard to lose weight but not impossible. Seems like everyone I know with a thyroid problem was overweight to begin with, not sure which came first. I think if you put a person with a thyroid problem on an island then they wouldn't be fat anymore and we'd see the real issue is eating too much and not the right foods. All of you defending being fat out there take a few months to eat only whole foods, no aspertame and processed crap, and exercise, then you may have permission to defend your obesity. No one is promoting anorexia so stop saying 'oh it's better to be fat than to be 90 pounds, blah blah...' You will not convince people to accept you no matter what, it's proven overweight women make less money at work. If you want your life to be better take responsibility and eat healthy and exercise and then you can stop making excuses for yourself.
then explain people that eat right (healthy foods) in right amounts that have weight issues? and try to exercise working 80 hours a week.
And people that anorexia or to thin have problems bring a child to term or creating life without medical help.
One of the bosses leads is 100 lbs overweight and she out makes everyone on the teams so please back up your "facts", she also hads three kids in Ivy league schools and is still on husband number one........

Give it a break overlord.

Overlord forgets the skinny gene. Some people can eat him under the table and not gain a pound.
Your weight, longevity , blood pressure , etc depends on your genes.
You can restrict, or add to, your calorie intake, exercise , etc, to reduce the gene effect. But It's still there.
SCAR forgets that there are WAY MORE obese people now than ever.
Is SCAR saying only fat people are breeding?
Give the genetic excuse a break. It's very tired.
Americans eat too much.
Do a little research on how leptin changes synapses. Stop reading the news and start reading the medical journals funded by obesity researchers, you might learn something.

Just happy to see tobacco is being left alone.
Sounds like some on this vine want it to be socially acceptable to be fat.
I don't think that line of thinking would be healthy for society.
Might make things easier for some personally but.......Fat IS bad. It just is.
Whatever got a fat person fat is irrelevant (Not going to judge)
Nature wants it's humans fit enough to run away from predators and climb trees.
Let's not start calling super fit-"unrealistic" or "Too thin"
Even if the Majority are fat- the minority is still better off.
Let's not forget that.
I won't be fat just because fat people wish I was to make themselves feel better about their wretched situation.
