NO they didn't get it wrong. They got it right. They got their man free and they got their oil contracts. Their corruption, deceit, betrayal, criminal decision, that is what they got wrong.
Salmond said the prognosis was based on the best evidence available, "and no one doubted that this was made on a professional judgment."
This politician and all others involved should be in jail for having betrayed his countrymen.
Never in my life have I heard of compassionate release after having killed 270 people.
Peter Jacobs - Of course you've heard of compassionate release of someone convicted of killing 270 people - they did it with that guy from the Lockerbie bombing about 2 years ago.
Peter Jacobs : Evidently you have read some news reports from around the world that I have also read. England forced his release, to get in good with Gadaffi for lucrative oil contracts. This debacle was done by politicians, not the good citizens of Scotland or England. USA politicians were silent, so they probably gave a wink & nod to his release.
Not that I agree with his release, I don't, but in reference to the doctor, it is virtually impossible to say when a person with cancer is going to die.
When my mother was diagnosed with cancer, her doctor told her she had 6 months left, so "make the best of it". Fortunately for my family, Mom stayed with us, in pretty good health, for another 6 years. On the other hand, we had a family friend with cancer, who was told she had about 1 year, and was gone within 2 months....
I am a retired nurse who has worked Hospice. I am now a volunteer & we had it for my father & aunt. While it is VERY difficult in some cases, esp. with cancer patients, to predict their demise, I find it unlikely he was so close to death that a new, "miracle" drug could have pulled him back from the jaws of death & allowed him to live for so long. The longest I knew of a patient living after terminal diagnoses was 3 yrs. & none of those were close to death.
Personally, I, like so many, believe dirty dealing was done here & have NO DOUBT why the Middle East does NOT respect the West.
Back in 02 when Cheney was holding his SECRET energy panels one of the issues was that Hallururton and western oil interest's were forbidden by US terrorist nation sanctions from operating in Libya,
Halluburton was also forbidden by a criminal and civil lawsuit by the US from operating there by legal action settled in 1995 . Something to due with Halluburton losing neutron generators , dual purpose devises, was used to check pipelines for cracks but complex enough to be used a timers in a nuclear devise
Mr Cheney well reported response to the lawsuit which was settled when he was CEO at Halluburton , was that the US government had no business telling a company how to operate in the international market, Pretty much told the government to f off
In 03 at the urging of the white house and with recommendations from the energy commission Lybia was removed from the terrorist nation list, the rest is history
So the Brits still want everyone to believe that is was just a coincidence that shortly after al-Megrahi's British based BP was given a lucrative deal to drill for oil off the Libyan coast. How gullible do they think people are. This was obviously a case of quid pro quo where the release of al-Megrahi and the oil deal were linked. The Brits and Scottish authorities should be ashamed of themselves for their actions and a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the release should be conducted. I wonder if the doctor making the recommendation had any ties to BP or has received any funding from them. Once Gadhafi is gone, the US government should push for the extradition of al-Megrahi to the US to face trial in the deaths of the Americans that were on the plane. After all, the Libyans owe the US for helping rid them of Gadhafi and they should at least be willing to extradite al-Megrahi to show their thanks.
He was released because the Scots and the Brits knew he didn't do it, and they made some oil deals to boot.
At least four US intelligence officers, including the CIA’s deputy station chief in Beirut, were on the Flight 103 passenger list. In the days following the bombing, CIA agents scoured the Scottish countryside, some reportedly dressed in Pan Am overalls. Mary Boylan, then a constable with Lothian and Borders police, has said that senior police officers told her not to make an official record of the CIA badge she recovered from the wreckage, asking her instead to hand it over to a senior colleague. Her testimony, too, is now in the hands of the SCCRC. Jim Wilson, a farmer from the village of Tundergarth, reported shortly after the bombing that he had found in his field a suitcase packed with a powdery substance that looked ‘like drugs’. He last saw the suitcase when he handed it over to the police, he said; he was never asked about it again.
In December 1998, Susan Lindauer, a US congressional aide, submitted a sworn deposition to the court in which she claimed that Richard Fuisz, a CIA agent, had given her a guarantee that he knew who was behind the Lockerbie bombing. Lindauer’s affidavit describes a conversation in Fuisz’s ‘business office’ in Chantilly, Virginia, in which he said he knew for sure the perpetrators were based in Syria. ‘Dr Fuisz has told me that he can identify who orchestrated and executed the bombing. Dr Fuisz has said that he can confirm absolutely that no Libyan national was involved in planning or executing the bombing of Pan Am 103, either in any technical or advisory capacity whatsoever.’ ‘If the government would let me, I could identify the men behind this attack,’ Lindauer says Fuisz told her. Lindauer has since been accused by the US government of being an Iraqi agent; her case is pending. But her earlier deposition has been submitted to the SCCRC. It can’t count for much, however, since Fuisz himself is not able to comment. In October 1994, a month after Lindauer spoke to him, Fuisz was gagged by a Washington court. The US government ruled that under state secrecy laws he faced ten years in prison if he spoke about the Lockerbie bombing. UN observers have since criticised this apparent restraint of a key witness.
There is much more to this story than we have been told and there are plenty of suspects. We (USS Vincennes) had just shot down an Iranian passenger jet and the Iranians had offered anyone 10 million to even the score. It has also been reported that the CIA agents on the flight were returning to Washington to report on some of their colleagues who were running a drug operation (remember the drugs in the suitcase). On top of this, the case against the Libyans was very weak.
So the Brits use his sickness to let him go (they know he's innocent anyway) and they make a sweet deal for some oil. They cover themselves by blaming the Scots who say they are being compassionate. Everyone's happy except the relatives of the dead and they'll never get the real story anyway.
Oh, it has come out. But there are ways to keep it quiet and from being accepted. After all, our government lies to us all the time. It's actually one area where they are quite efficient and out perform the private sector. We only really get the truth 50 years later when the court records are unsealed and the guilty are long gone. Unfortunately, by that time it's usually too late to even change the history books.
Tim, no doctor ever said that he had six months to live. Every doctor who treated him has DENIED ever giving that diagnosis! Just Google it and you will find that they were all forced by various government officials to say that he was dying but none of them would risk their licenses. So, the government just "said" that he was dying. All of this was to appease Gahadfi and gain his oil fields. This was pure politics for oil.
I live in Scotland and I have never met anyone here or elsewhere in the UK who thinks letting that man go was a good idea. This was a political deal done without the consent of the Scottish people so don't blame all Scots for a shady deal done by government agencies.
Does everything the US government do make you happy Mr. "10s2009"?
Oicur12 please read my post #2.1. If you have read it once already, you obviously didn't understand what I said therein.
No regular person in the UK is making money off oil deals made by Big Money in the UK anymore than regular Americans make money off oil deals made in the USA. Or maybe Exxon sends you personally a cheque every time they jack up the gas prices and make another billion dollars?
I don't know and I haven't met anyone in the UK who likes Rupert Murdoch. In case you haven't heard Murdoch and everyone who worked at the reporting management level of his now defunct newspaper "The News of the World" is currently under investigation for criminal activity in the so-called phone hacking scandal so that ought to be your first indication that not a lot of people in the UK have any love for Murdoch.
Try and separate Big Business and the government political machinery from the common people because they are very different things.
I say again to you personally: Does everything the US government do make you happy Mr. "Oicur12"?
No, I didn't think so. So don't imagine for one minute that the British people approve of everything done by the British government, British oil companies, British banks, British newspapers, etc anymore than Americans are delighted with everything done by the American government, American oil companies, etc.
Scottish leader says he has no regrets about the release of Abdel Baset al-Megrahi on compassionate grounds
No, the Scottish leader has no compassion, or he would never tell the thousands of family members of his victims that the lives of their loved ones were worth less than two weeks in prison.
That's even more idiotic than 'time off for good behavior'....(If their behavior is good, they shouldn't be in prison in the first place).
My high school teacher lost her daughter on that flight. It destroyed her life ,This scumbag shouldn't be allowed to see the light of day or even still be breathing.sorry cancer or no cancer should never have been freed.
Can anyone reading this article clear up a little confusion? The plane blew up over Scotland. Scotland is a (province?) of the U.K. Does the U.K. not have absolute authority in these matters? If it blew up over OHIO the U.S. govt would prosecute and incarcerate. Ohio would have no authority to release him even if he was jailed in a federal pen there.
Seems to me the U.K. is too loosely formed to have a strong govt in a national crisis. Seems like Scotland could just say "No we're not going to war with you this time. You're on your own."
Scotland is its own country which is part of a union of four countries that form the United Kingdom. The only three countries of the UK are England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Scotland has its own legal system.
I don't think you know enough about Scotland or the UK to draw conclusions about how the countries or the union in general conduct their affairs. I don't say that in a nasty way, just as a statement of fact.
Jherek: No offense taken. It's probably because here in the U.S. the feds have total control of the air regardless of which state the air happens to be over. However, when watching the British Parliament on C-SPAN (oh no! did I just confess to that?) I see all the "countries" of the U.K. in there arguing their case sometimes so that's where my questioning comes in.
If there is even a loose central government entity encompassing all the members, is there enough cohesion (by law) to require participation in say a war or military occupation somewhere, or can Scotland say "No, our members are not going". I'm sure I've read somewhere that there are Scots in the British Army so there must be some kind of controlling legislation. Just can't figure where one ends and the other begins. Funny chaps, them Brits.
Actually, if it happened in the US now, who knows what would happen. They still have one of the masterminds behind 9/11 sitting in jail while they are trying to figure out what to do with him. The underwear bomber is in a state prison and they are still scratching their heads what to do about him. Anyone hear about the Times Square bomber? When is his trial?
We're 30 years after the deed on Lockerbie. I don't think anyone is going to do anything with him. He's become a national hero in Libya. Which is another reason that I keep wondering why we are there.
When you have no integrity, then there is no reason not to lie about everything you do. The Scottish politicians simply have no integrity. Or if they do:
The Kingdom of Scotland emerged as an independent sovereign state in the Early Middle Ages and continued to exist until 1707, although it had been in a personal union with the kingdoms of England and Ireland since James VI of Scotland succeeded to the English and Irish thrones in 1603. On 1 May 1707, Scotland entered into an incorporating political union with England to create the united Kingdom of Great Britain. This union resulted from the Treaty of Union agreed in 1706 and enacted by the twin Acts of Union passed by the Parliaments of both countries, despite widespread protest across Scotland. Scotland's legal system continues to be separate from those of England and Wales and Northern Ireland, and Scotland constitutes a distinct jurisdiction in public and in private law.
If there is even a loose central government entity encompassing all the members, is there enough cohesion (by law) to require participation in say a war or military occupation somewhere, or can Scotland say "No, our members are not going".
lamort DeLioncourt provided a great summary as to why Scotland could free the bomber. Think of it like "states rights" in the US. As strong as the Federal government is, there are some areas beyond its control. Each state, for instance, has its own legal and penal system. A governor can pardon a person held on state charges, even if that action is opposed by the Federal government or other states. Yet, no one suggests that a state can refrain from participating in military actions.

The British have taken harsher views toward people and events much less severe than this. I suspect some behind-the-scenes political motivation.
I wonder about BP. Do they even care about people anymore?
Look what they did to the Gulf of Mexico and all the people that rely on the Gulf for their livlihood. Left them high and dry and blamed others for the destruction. As their head of US interests said, "I want my life back." Really? So do the 11 men who died on the rig, as well as the people who can no longer feed their families!
I no longer buy my gas at BP, even though it's the gas station closest to my home. No, I'm not hitting BP where it hurts, but I'm taking a stand against a company that puts the almighty dollar above the concerns for humanity...
Thank you for allowing me to rant.....now I can go do housework.
Actually, it wasn't so 'behind the scene'...it pretty much came out in the open, and went on, regardless of what the British and Scottish people wanted. I'm just surprised that there wasn't/isn't a contract put out on him by any of the victims' kinfolk. Not necessarily condoning it, but I'm surprised it wasn't done.
This wouldn't be hard to fix. Take him up in a jet and throw him out at 36,000 feet. If his "Allah" wants him to survive, he will. In the meantime, maybe the p.o.s. will think of the hundreds of innocent people he sent to the same terrifying, gut-wrenching death.
Not knowing the specifics around the question of his conviction holding up or not, my opinion is, especially in terrorism related cases, the individual should remain in custody until he either completes his sentence or dies tryin. The hell with compassion when talking about persons killing men, women and children by the hundreds for a "cause". Two Hundred and Seventy people and the Scottish leader wants to be compassionate? Wheres the compassion for the victims and their families. As far as "questions" regarding his guilt, the police should have had a strong case BEFORE the charged and subsequently tried and convicted him.
"He could live for years." Or Cameron could do the RIGHT thing and send in a hit squad and TAKE HIM OUT! But don't hold your breath for the Brits, they are a mere shadow of their former selves.
All of a sudden this here dick weep comes up dead. Someone shot him point blank range in the head. And I don't know who put all that money in my Cayman Island's Swiss Bank account. ;-)
"It is fundamentally difficult to estimate the life expectancy of someone with terminal cancer," he said.
Then don't, let him serve out his full sentence.
If this story doesn't clarify the fact big business and especially big oil run the governments of the industrialized countries I don't know what would.
Ron Paul-2012. He may not be perfect but same old same old has to go!
This was all about money. From the oil contracts to the money they payed the Doctor, so he could lie and certify that this terrorist only had 3 months to live.
to Pennie - I realize that. That's why he'll burn in hell. There's a 'special place in hell' for terrorists. And it AIN'T with 72 virgins. (72 years old or not! that's funny.) Poor Great Aunt Helen. I don't think she deserved that. rofl
This is a slap in the face of everyone who lost a loved one in this incident. There is a place in hell for people like this, and the judge who agreed to release him has a reserved place in hell right next to this murderer.
Thanks to the greedy British and the lucrative oil contracts it got for releasing this serial killer. Once the rebels take Tripoli they should hand this guy over to the Americans and we should put him in Guantanamo Bay and let him rot. How moronic for the British to claim "compassion" in letting this guy go, when he murdered 270 people did he have compassion for them as well? I seriously doubt it.
Well, I guess releasing a terrorist for oil is no worse than being in bed with a media terrorist. The politicians in the UK have a strange definition of integrity.
Makes you wonder if England is really an ally This is so unbelievable I hope their dealing for oil with Ghadafi and his terrorists go null and void when the Rebels oust them as punishment for their support
The name may be "BP" (British Petroleum), but I bet that as much of it is owned by Americans as by Brits. Boycotts against BP, which employs many Americans and has many American facilities, could be self-defeating.
As for wondering if Britian is really an ally, they probably wondered the same thing about us after we got them embroiled in Iraq.
"Compassionate grounds??" What the hell was that Scottish court thinking when they released this monster? One thing it proves is that all the stupidity is not emanating just from the USA.
Snappa (above) is right. It's so obvious. The Brits saw an opportunity to get a lucrative oil deal through and suddenly this guy was released on "compassionate grounds"!!
Well it would seem that the Old Regime (in Lybia) is on it's way out. And quite possibly the new Regime may be a tad more cooperative with the US Govt. So this cockroach can come pay us a visit, in an all expense's paid vacation in Super Max. In beautiful Florence Colo.
Don't count on any help from a new regime. This scumbag is a hero to the nation (as they are all muslims down for the struggle against all infidels) not just to Ghadafi and his ilk. This murderous dog will live out his days in peace and safety - "parole hearings" notwithstanding. Even if he violates his parole, what are they going to do? This whole thing is a sick joke.
Kind of makes you wonder about the Doctor that said he was going to die in 3 months doesn't it?
NO they didn't get it wrong. They got it right. They got their man free and they got their oil contracts. Their corruption, deceit, betrayal, criminal decision, that is what they got wrong.
This politician and all others involved should be in jail for having betrayed his countrymen.

"Lockerbie bomber may live for years"
This is such a disgraceful debacle. Britain has some explaining to do!
it's obvious oil contracts trump scotish citizens

And some things just bite you in the A$$ like it should.
Put your trust in Corporations and Government, they wont do you wrong or lie to you?

Good point Jherek.
Oicur12 just made some pretty ridiculous statements to back up his friend 10s2009.
I usually wonder about the thought processes of our political leaders on most of their decisions.

Corporate Britain not much different than corporate America. The pols are in their pockets.
You sum up the situation very concisely.
+1

Wheres the compassion for the victims and their families. As far as "questions" regarding his guilt, the police should have had a strong case BEFORE the charged and subsequently tried and convicted him.
"He could live for years." Or Cameron could do the RIGHT thing and send in a hit squad and TAKE HIM OUT! But don't hold your breath for the Brits, they are a mere shadow of their former selves.
All of a sudden this here dick weep comes up dead. Someone shot him point blank range in the head. And I don't know who put all that money in my Cayman Island's Swiss Bank account. ;-)
I'm just saying!
Then don't, let him serve out his full sentence.
If this story doesn't clarify the fact big business and especially big oil run the governments of the industrialized countries I don't know what would.
Ron Paul-2012. He may not be perfect but same old same old has to go!
Has America named him an enemy of the state yet?
Now that he is not "protected" by Scottish authorities, America is free to go kill him.
This was all about money. From the oil contracts to the money they payed the Doctor, so he could lie and certify that this terrorist only had 3 months to live.
I hope every day of his miserable life is extremely painful and in the end he dies lonely and guilt ridden. Oh... and may he burn in hell.
He's Muslim. When he dies he goes immediately to the afterlife and spends eternity with a 72 year old virgin.
A 72 year-old virgin? He's spending eternity with my Great Aunt Helen????
Grace, he'll never feel any kind of guilt for murdering 270 people, even as he takes his last breath.
to Pennie - I realize that. That's why he'll burn in hell. There's a 'special place in hell' for terrorists. And it AIN'T with 72 virgins. (72 years old or not! that's funny.) Poor Great Aunt Helen. I don't think she deserved that. rofl
Wjith all the money and bombs we are spending there, can't we just kill him? Just asking.
People like him have already made hell fire their destination.A hardened heart won't
repent!Enough said!
As long as this murderer lives, I won't purchase any BP gasoline, nor stop in their mini marts to buy something.
The Brits saw an opportunity to get a lucrative oil deal through and suddenly this guy was released on "compassionate grounds"!!
he wouldnt have made it three months if I was President
