That's probably what will happen. Windows that will open will be banned from other than the 1st floor in all homes/apartments to protect children from inattentive parents. No matter what steps are taken there will always be falls, which could have been prevented. There are screens with latches and mesh that will withstand 100's of pounds of pressure, low cost and needs no new laws.
Joe- yes, but it's all about SAFETY - cradle to the grave, safety.
Nosferatu is right : here it comes - Congressional investigations, subcommittees writing laws outlawing windows, the CPSC issuing mandates, and OSHA with reams of paper on window safety.
Jeez, just think: once we outlaw windows, only outlaws will have them! WoW! Time for the ACLU to step in for window liberation.
I can't count how many times I've had to tell my nephew not to climb onto the window sill in his bedroom. He is on the 2nd floor and all the windows above the 1st floor have window guards but it freaks me out that our windows (even though practically new) might give way and let him fall. We've tried talking to him (explaining how dangerous, telling him we don't like it, how much trouble he will be in if we catch him at the window), time-outs and even a spanking once (we don't usually spank and didn't until about a month ago when we couldn't get him to stop) but to no avail. He is very well behaved and listens to us really well but it's like talking to a wall when it comes to this particular thing. He hasn't done it that we've seen in about 2 weeks but I think if I ever catch him in the window again I am moving him into the basement!!
Parents need to be vigilante and take precautions but you can't watch a kid every single second. As for the government stepping in puhleez..they need to be watched every single second...seems like even then, like any kid, they'd find a way to get themselves into a fix.
Wooo, the Teabaggers are in full force this morning. What, are your government subsidy checks late?
For the infants and toddlers, its a parent issue---you've got to look critically at the child's surroundings and eliminate those dangers that they won't develop awareness of til 5 or 6 yo.
For the rest whose aberrant crotchfruit manage to off themselves and their friends from the age of 12 and up with idiot stunts---I'm good with that. Improves the genepool...
Perhaps it might make more sense to consider a Congressional committee to look into the 225,000 beatings that American schoolchildren sustain in the 19 states where corporal punishment inflicted by teachers and school administrators is legal.
OMG! 5000 kids a year fall from windows and 1/4 or those (1250 for the math challenged) are admitted to hospitals! The obvious answer is to immediately board up all windows and make all new buildings windowless! Or, or people could keep a better eyes on their kids.
Thanks MSNBC for bring this clear and present danger to our attention.
OMG!! Took the words right out of my brain!! Couldn't have said it better [actually, I cudda, but.. lol!!]!! Agree with redesign codes for all new construction, and the use of only sky lights. Hummmmm, I suppose a somewhat cheaper alternative to "boarding up" the windows, is to just paint them the same color as the inside wall; the kid won't have a clue as to what it is, and have his/her curiosity focused solely on the electrical outlets that populate the rooms. Actually, that's not a bad idea, as it keeps them on the floor, and safe from falls! :O)
Great boost for the plywood industry as we work on saving a statistically insignificant part of the population at the great expense in quality of life for the majority. Welcome to the mommy state.
While we're on the subject of children getting hurt by everyday items, we should ban the use of pencils and pens by anyone under the age of 12. Rulers should be closely guarded and meted out sparingly, ONLY UNDER ADULT SUPERVISION, because rulers can be dangerous. Chalk, erasers, crayons, school desk lids, lockers, tile floors (could slip and fall when wet), bananas (could choke), back packs (back problems), baseball bats, basket balls (ever been hit with one), and paper (paper cuts) are all too dangerous for the little tykes. Ban everything because parents are not responsible for their kids, the state is.
Sorry, I'm an Alasken King Crab today (not to be confused with a Chesapeak Bay Soft Shelled Crab). My hours have just been cut and I'm not happy about it.
Yank... this has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with political persuasion. Unless you are suggesting liberals care more about the safety of children in general...? Don't be a dolt or a troll.
On a side note... not sure what "fader" is exactly...
They troll, because the common sense answer is something so obvious, they feel it's pointless if you have to say it. As in, the people who lack common sense will never accept the obvious answer anyway, so why bother?
No fearing your child falls from a window, no fearing their head will be split. Underneath each and every window; you should place a large barrel of SH............hhhhhaving cream! Be nice and clean.
Straw man arguments (which is an "informal fallacy based on misrepresentation of an opponent's position," for those of you who may not know) are neither clever nor informative. You are positing your opposition would hold such a ridiculous position that it would make them ridiculous if it were true, but since your opposition would never actually hold such a belief, you comment is quite silly indeed. Such tactics will never lead to reasonable or mature discussion of real issues. And when I say real issues, I do not mean children falling out of windows. But your attitude toward those you label "liberal" evident in this comment clearly suggests your attitude toward debate of real issues with those you disagree with wouldn't be any better or productive. It is time we, as a people, as a nation, get past the prejudices our convenient little labels endorse and get on with it.
I believe what sad was saying is : When you make stupid claims as such, that everyone knows isnt true and wouldnt happen, you make yourself look like a jackass and not the person you were trying to belittle. It's funny how people do not realize that "conservatives" want to control your private life. I.E. Who you marry, when to have kids, what your worship etc..... Liberals want to regulate business... Which really effects the people on this board??... I believe the personal life. I highly doubt you people hollering the loudest for the republicans/tea party really feel the benefits of their political stance. Democrats/republicans whatever all BS. Until everyone wakes up it's only going to get worse
How many people are they paying to track this kind of information and how many million did it cost the taxpayers? These studies don't do a thing for the children that die and frankly, parents already know that this kind of thing can happen. It's the parent's responsibility to make their home safe.
This is probably data collected from hospitals. With all this new fangled technology called a computer, it probably was really simple. Of all the things to complain about tax dollars, this has to be the dumbest. Not the politicians salaries that bother you, or the tax breaks for corporations to send your jobs to India, But you choose collecting data that has already been entered. Choose your issues better, because this isn't a very good one for spending....
Well maybe while ur doing those things you should close the windows.
I think it is funny how there is always someone who states the obvious, "you cant watch your children 24/7." No, really? Point is if you make sure your home is safe watch your children as much as you can (regardless they should always be on the same floor as you and you should be able to hear them and vice versa without yelling at the top of your lungs) and teach them about dangers, than accidents are less likely to happen. Now that would be common sense.
That is truly sorry! You must be from a Southern State! Where I am from THE PARENT IS ALWAYS RESPONSIBLE PERIOD! There is no excuse for a child to get to a window, climb up, and fall out and the parent not be responsible! I mean what is more important? Your husband's dirty underwear or the life of your child?
Carmen, it cracks me up as well. Everyone that has ever had a child remembers moments like hearing the toilet flush when you were washing the dishes only to discover the one year old had taken a chair from their room and used it to climb onto the back of the toilet and throw YOUR underwear (that was in the drawer) out the side-opening window they had somehow jimmied open and the only reason you caught them was their foot had slipped and flushed the toilet alerting you! But of course you are just an irresponsible parent who should have your kids taken away because you didn't reinforce a window five feet off the floor and you check on your kids every 5 to 6 minutes while doing chores instead of every other minute!! :)
No s!!t Heather, things do happen. Most people on here want you to just drag up a chair and stare at your child. Perhaps then the kid will only need a shrink cause they are paranoid.
This is the direct result of not allowing our kids to climb trees (because it's too dangerous). Lessons need to be learned one way or the other. Just get a better grip next time!!!
Lordy, WHERE did YOU go to school? To SOLVE a problem it must FIRST be defined. Of course, YOU might be one of those whose psychic abilities range so far into the future you can predict all possible outcomes for every scenario. Good for you.
MAYBE these worthless studies will result in modified building codes, availability of easily-attached mesh for window frames (a tough screen would do it) or just freeking AWARENESS.
No doubt you have no issue with the imprisonment and torture of millions of drug users based on the deaths of a handful, yes? Without research on a national level (and similar enforcement, right?) NO drug would be worth outlawing because (in the case of kids, often the rationale for criminalizing behavior for adults) there aren't that many deaths locally and besides, it's the PARENTS job to control what their kids use, yes?
mmm - what, YOUR city allows the construction of residential housing built of fiberglass , glass & steel.? Try it. You can no more add or build in floor-to-ceiling windows in an apartment building 10 stories up than I can process dog feces into fuel in my backyard...
“Parents need to remember that window screens simply won’t be enough,” said Smith.

I learned not to fight with my brother while sitting on a window sill 3 stories above the ground, that much is for sure! We fought elsewhere after that.
In light of this...can we agree that we need to ban windows to protect the children?
All of us can point to other, equally idiotic bannings and prohibitions that take off on the implement of our destruction rather than the stupid, the inattentive, the negligent or the out-and-out criminal in our midst?
Windows don't kill children, crapheads who don't adequately supervise their children kill children.
As the mother of a 16yr old and a 2 yr old, I installed locking latches. Windows open 6 inches and it keeps the 16 yrs old from climbling out after midnight and the 2 yr old from falling out.
It does amaze me that this made the news....after all, the "Brain-Eating Ameba" killed 2 poor children and was all over the news. After all, it effects more than 5000 children a year. Still hasn't made National headlines that over 2000 children are hurt or killed in the bathroom. I guess that isn't sensational enough.

Why are people suggesting that liberals will try to ban windows? This isn't a business issue, it's a personal choice issue... entirely the realm of conservative meddling.
"Conservatives" will say anything to make it look as if liberals want to ban everything and get into everyone's business. When in reality, they want to ban everything they don't like or don't think is of God. If stupid mudslinging and name calling to try to make themselves look like the sane ones. I'm sure they will not like their place in history. But to think of the future that wouldn't be in the "conservatives" nature. These are the same sheep that vote and support things that do not have their best interest in mind and in the end hurt them. Nothing more than puppets. Well, it was liberals who forced bicycle helmet laws because kids fall. It is liberals that stopped playground games like Red Rover, Dodgeball, etc. That enough for you?
Truly I don't think that's a liberal or conservative issue. It's a personal responsibility issue. I know just as many conservative parents who scream and blame others when their kid gets hurt as does a liberal parent. Just as many frivolous lawsuits from conservative as there is liberals. That's why those laws exists. To keep people from getting a payday because of an accident due to regular horseplay. Really if you want to place blame for dumb laws point the finger at the entire government for allowing so many loopholes to go unclosed. But then again cause and effect has never been a strong conservative trait.
Well...with these facts it won't be very long until some democrats will want to ban windows for being too dangerous and lethal....or maybe we will just have to register the windows with the government and all be trained on window safety.
Don't worry it won't be long until republicans de regulate windows and make em wide enough to push their supporters out of em. Once they de regulate everything and have all your money, wont be any use for their supporters. Im sure their own the companies that make and install the windows so it'll be a win-win. They can even validate themselves as job creators that way.....
Keep the windows locked when you cannot supervise your children, and don't put couches, chairs, etc., by the window if you do like to keep your windows open. If it's hot and that is the reason for having the windows open, get a fan instead. I'd rather pay extra in electricity than leave windows open and risk my child falling out. Losing a child is much more costly than a fan and the electricity needed to operate it.
Time for a congressional committee to study this issue. After the elections, maybe we can get a law outlawing windows.
After all, it's...for....the ...........children
Can't expect the incompetent fools from congress to get anything done especially when they are there for themselves.
That's probably what will happen. Windows that will open will be banned from other than the 1st floor in all homes/apartments to protect children from inattentive parents. You really dont believe in beating children? How can they learn if they are not severely beaten from time to time?
At whom was your question directed 11madness?
Parents have to tell their children the dangers of windows and that if god wanted them to fly he would of gave them wings.
As for the very young ones..its the stupid parents fault.
...he would have given them wings.
You would think after the first 100 or so fell out the window the others would not have followed.
I can still hear my mom, "if one of your friends jumped does that mean you have to?"
Wouldn't the first few pad the fall for the succeeding?
Does that mean if god wanted the poor to be rich he would of given them money?
OMG! 5000 kids a year fall from windows and 1/4 or those (1250 for the math challenged) are admitted to hospitals! The obvious answer is to immediately board up all windows and make all new buildings windowless! Or, or people could keep a better eyes on their kids.

1 in every 58 children in the United States are victims of abuse.
Windows are not our problem.

On a side note... not sure what "fader" is exactly...
Bet he [yankee] meant..."more fodder", ya' think?
Is that the opposite of your mudder?
Oops. Why haven't the libs passed a law requiring the elimination of windows from buildings so no innocent child will ever have to be injured again?
Where's (insert kids name)'s law fixing this problem?
Doesn't the government have to protect kids from every possible (and stupid) hazard.
Surely parental responsibility has nothing to do with this.
See my comment above. Why so many trolls on this story?
@Saddened:
They troll, because the common sense answer is something so obvious, they feel it's pointless if you have to say it. As in, the people who lack common sense will never accept the obvious answer anyway, so why bother?
Sometimes, I can't say I blame them.
No fearing your child falls from a window, no fearing their head will be split. Underneath each and every window; you should place a large barrel of SH............hhhhhaving cream! Be nice and clean.
That! I used to love it when Dr. Demento would play this song!
Or they may need a "Transfusion transfusion"!
Dr. Demento! What a flashback!
Fish head.
Following traditional liberal logic, we should outlaw windows. Or at least create a government agency to make regulations about windows.
Straw man arguments (which is an "informal fallacy based on misrepresentation of an opponent's position," for those of you who may not know) are neither clever nor informative. Sad...I believe Mike was merely reporting history, not making up something with no examples to point to.
One of our convenient little labels strives to control our behavior to an obnoxious degree, and one doesn't.
So...that's a match, and run strawman run.
SAD- just what liberal arts college did you go to?
a law school maybe?
Your statement is a bit convoluted - we dumbasses who went to tech schools like MIT , RIT, Caltech, etc. get confused. WTF are you saying?
I believe what sad was saying is : When you make stupid claims as such, that everyone knows isnt true and wouldnt happen, you make yourself look like a jackass and not the person you were trying to belittle. No parent can keep an eye on their kids 24/7. Be realistic. You have to cook, do laundry, wash dishes, clean house etc.
Well maybe while ur doing those things you should close the windows.
I think it is funny how there is always someone who states the obvious, "you cant watch your children 24/7." No, really? No Doubt Democrats and Chucky Schumer will be racing to the Capital Rotunda to announce a new plan making windows illegal.
HR 2011-34 The Window Safety Control Act.
This is the direct result of not allowing our kids to climb trees (because it's too dangerous). Lessons need to be learned one way or the other. Just get a better grip next time!!!
So you suggest letting our kids fall from windows as a way to teach them a lesson?
Works for me.
They will learn not to do that again, I did. The doctor says I'm all better now.
Based on these figures, I'm sure some government agency will now want to outlaw windows.
mmm - what, YOUR city allows the construction of residential housing built of fiberglass , glass & steel.? Try it. You can no more add or build in floor-to-ceiling windows in an apartment building 10 stories up than I can process dog feces into fuel in my backyard...
Humpty Dumpty was pushed.
“Parents need to remember that window screens simply won’t be enough,” said Smith.
I am living testimony to the truth of this. When I was 3 years old my older brother (who was about 4) and I got into a little fight on the window sill, and he pushed me, and I fell out the window (which had a screen in it). I fell 3 stories and landed on the sidewalk below. Miraculously, I walked away with only a broken arm.
Bet ya learned your lesson though, right?
nosferatu,
I learned not to fight with my brother while sitting on a window sill 3 stories above the ground, that much is for sure! We fought elsewhere after that.
Children are inherently stupid and parents aren't attentive enough.
Gravity is inherently hostile.
The ground or pavement is inherently hard.
In light of this...can we agree that we need to ban windows to protect the children?
All of us can point to other, equally idiotic bannings and prohibitions that take off on the implement of our destruction rather than the stupid, the inattentive, the negligent or the out-and-out criminal in our midst?

"Conservatives" will say anything to make it look as if liberals want to ban everything and get into everyone's business. Really if you want to place blame for dumb laws point the finger at the entire government for allowing so many loopholes to go unclosed. But then again cause and effect has never been a strong conservative trait.
Since most falls are from the second floor, children should be required to live below or above the second floor.
Or put warning labels on the outer window sills: "If you're close enough to read this".
But really, are there that many people who don't realize you can keep the bottom part closed and open the top window?
Why not do away with the #2 floor, like many buildings skip #13?
Our government has fallen from grace. How many does this injure every day?Care to count them?
Well...with these facts it won't be very long until some democrats will want to ban windows for being too dangerous and lethal....or maybe we will just have to register the windows with the government and all be trained on window safety.
Don't worry it won't be long until republicans de regulate windows and make em wide enough to push their supporters out of em. Then those kids grow to become conservatives as a result of the fall due to the brain injury.
