This study is incredibly flawed, and grossly underestimates the prevalence of IUDs. One of the risks with IUD insertion is that the IUD will fall out, and need to be replaced. The risk of this in women who have just given birth is in the range of 12%, but this risk greatly decreases just 6 weeks post-partum to 1-2%. Therefore, it's standard practice amongst US physicians to wait until 6 weeks after delivery to insert an IUD.
