Researcher quoted as saying "It's also the first example of a deletion and a duplication of one part of the genome having opposite effects." This is not true. Research has shown that the duplication of maternal Chromosome 15 which contains the ube3a gene can cause autism - antisocial behavior. Deletion of the ube3a gene on chromosome 15 causes Angelman Syndrome, a disorder known for very happy demeanor and extreme socialness. Opposite effects.
janierock are you always so judgemental and ignorant?...read the article. Our American fast food diet is certainly a factor in the obesity in this country, however, genetics and many, many medications cause slowing of the metabolism and increased appetite. Compassion not hate is needed.
gnarlynurse, you prove there is hope for our society yet. Well put! We should not forget that not only is there evidence that obesity is genetic, there are also numerous diseases that can cause obesity, such as Cushing's disease and polycystic ovary syndrome.(that last only affects women, janierock) Here's a direct quote from the Center for Disease Control. "Science shows that genetics plays a role in obesity. Genes can directly cause obesity in disorders such as Bardet-Biedl syndrome and Prader-Willi syndrome. It's time people stop engaging in one of the last "acceptable" prejudices.
Very glad to hear it has nothing to do with my habits. I have been what some call a hard gainer no matter what I eat. No matter if I eat a pint of Ben and Jerry's every night and have a big breakfast, I don't gain any weight. Some may say, "you're so lucky", I say no I'm not. People in this society judge men on their size and if you happen to be skinny it means you're less than. Like I set out to be thin my entire life. By the way, you don't gain weight after you're married, when you get older and no my metabolism has not slowed. This has been really hard for me my entire life. 44 years old and still the same size since high school, it's like being punished for something. Though I must say, when I attended my high school reunion those people that made fun of me are now just fat slobs who can't even stand enough to carry on a conversation. Also, when people said, "you haven't changed a bit", it's the truth.
Rudeboi I can relate I'm 49yrs old and I still physically look the same as I did in high school with the exception of some aging wrinkles and slight balding. I see kids in high school now that are bigger than me were talking 16yr old kids. I get ribbed at work for being small, scrawny used to bother me but not anymore with all the obesity going around. And like you I can eat anything and not gain an ounce. I used to drink rather heavily and I quit due to health problems I'm an alcoholic haven't had a drink since 2005 as soon as I quit drinking I lost 25lbs and haven't been able to gain it back. Doctors don't seem to be too concerned about it. I do smoke and I'm attempting to quit I'm sure that will put on a few more pounds but to feel comfortable I need to gain about 30lbs. Also for you people trying to loose weight I empathize it's just as difficult if not more to put on weight well at least for some of us.
How can so many of you just blithely accept that excess "skinniness" is genetic and obesity isn't? Animals have been bred to gain more fat, more quickly, for centuries. All you need do is look at the cattle industry. Geneticists have produced several conclusive studies that show all our aspects are genetic. A recent one spoke of how longevity is more a matter of genes than lifestyle. Are you all proud of your prejudice? Well, perhaps you'll be blessed with a child who is prone to obesity and your perfect little worlds will crumble, when after your chiding, badgering, insulting and punishing them for it, causes them to take their own lives. By the way all you genetic experts, being overly thin is called "ectomorphism" and overly fat is "endomorphism."
This one is just for janierock and rudeboy, I mean rudeboi, and it's from this same article.
In a study in the journal Nature, researchers from Britain's Imperial College London and the University of Lausanne in Switzerland found that a duplication of a part of chromosome 16 is associated with being underweight.
Previous research has found that people with a missing copy of these genes are 43 times more likely to be morbidly obese.
I REALLY need to get tested to see if I have this "overdose" of chromosome 16. Ive had two children and, at this time, weigh even less than I did in high school. No matter what I eat I cant gain weight and it has at times gotten very depressing for me. People really dont realize that the struggle to gain weght is just as hard as trying to lose. I'm glad they've descovered this and I'm sure a very expensive drug to help with this problem will hit the market soon :-/
I most definitely have this condition. I've been 135-145 since 8th grade. I'm 6'4", 140, and now 26 years old. In college, there was no freshman 15. Tall my entire life but no weight to match... girls were never romantically interested, and the same in college. It didn't matter to my college baseball coach that I was left handed, threw 85, benched 180, squatted 320, and struck out 8 on my first outing... I never gained weight, so he assumed I wasn't working hard, and didn't 'look like a ball player'. I've gotten @!$%# my entire life for being underweight, from coaches, family, friends, acquaintances, women, and strangers. My life has been a battle; respect is difficult when your image never matches the phase of life you are in; in high school, it meant no girlfriend... In college, it meant no more baseball... in life, it has meant no respect; from the people I work with, women, or children. All see me as too young, sick, diseased, underdeveloped, or immature. Money will be my only equalizer.
You mean it's not because I get up at five and go for a hard ride? So I can stop?
It's hard to say. Take a month off and see.
Danny honey, thanks for the advice.
so it IS the skinny genes lol
Yes, but obesity is a disease of lack of willpower and weak character.
janierock, you have a disease of ignorance, bigotry and no character.
janierock,
Please get an education.
You are an ignorant moron.

Well, I am SURE that I do not have this particular Gene 'overdose'.
That's good, because I'm pretty sure the article wasn't just about you.

You judge those whom you accuse of judging you. That's pretty hypocritical. Frankly, you're worse than they are.
And now you're judging him... well done. And he is allowed to feel however he wants towards people who mocked him, we weren't there.

Good catch on the judging comment, Taylor.
