The fact that the firefighters have a higher risk of cancer is awful. For those firefighters that have died of cancer and those that are terminal should also be considered a victim of the terroist attack of Sept 11. These firefighters should also be counted and considered with the numbers of those that actually died that terrible day. If that attack had not occured they would not be sick or dying. They would be just as healthy as the next firefighter.
These are the real victims of the terrorist attacks. At least they deserve to have good insurance and not having to worry that they will not be able to afford their care
Bush made his political career and absolutely assured his reelection standing on the still smoldering pile that was the World Trade Center with the American flag and several First Responders at his back. "Republican" became by way of marketing and war time patriotism (rally around the president) synonymous with First Responders, the Red, White and Blue, Granny, Sis and Apple Pie. What a crock! Two things I will never forget... 1) the bravery of the 9-11 first responders 2) how the republicans in congress turned their backs on them by unanimously voting against extending the healthcare coverage of 9-11 first responders to include the long-term health impacts from the work they did on 9-11 and during the aftermath.

North tower had Asbestos insulation throughout the tower. South tower had it installed in about 2/3rds of all the floors. It was estimated in the late 1990s that asbestos removal from the twin towers would cost over $1 billion dollars.
They know the risks when they take the job. There's a line around the block of people who want to get hired as firefighters and paramedics. If you don't want to assume the risk, don't take the job.
This is not a third world nation yet, no matter how desperately republicans are trying to turn it into one. If you are hurt on the job through no fault of your own, your employer is supposed to pay your medical bills.

This isn't shocking and it also should be a concern to anyone who was in the dust cloud at any time and even afterwards in the surrounding areas since the dust spread everywhere within a few miles radius. When you watch videos of that day, thousands of citizens were covered in white dust. Lots of bad toxic stuff was in that dust. Hopefully people avoid the health hazards that come with it.
They want more "evidence" that the firefighters have a disease, despite the fact that they were there at the World Trade Center that day. As if that was not enough evidence. I guess the ultimate evidence is to be dead...then what does it matter any more?
Is it possible that someof the first responders who get cancer would have gotten it anyway-of course. But what side would we, as a society that vowed yesterday to never forget and to honor the heroes from that day, rather err on? The side that may provide benefits to too many heroes-or the side that, in an attempt to not give any extra heroes an extra penny, have those who were affected unable to pay their bills?
I blame Republicans for first responders STILL not having healthcare to deal with their illnesses.

Bottom line: I don't give a flying f*** if the cancer or heart disease or COPD or asthma was caused exclusively, mostly, partially, or even not at all from the toxic chemicals they breathed at ground zero. If they were there, they get their healthcare taken care of. Period. We know there is a connection between being there and cancer as well as heart and lung problems, so the correct response is to help them. Period.

The correct response is to help them. If a few get care whose disease was caused by something else, then so be it. The alternative is to ignore everyone whose disease was caused by their exposure at ground zero, or make them "prove" that it was "caused" by their exposure, and to me that is beyond unacceptable. It's a shame.

Funny how Congress likes treating our greatest heroes like crap. I don't give a damn if they ended up getting malaria and it was unrelated to working at Ground Zero. If those guys chose to work day and night to save people from the rubble, risking their health, they deserve health care coverage for anything.
The irony is, many of those brave first responders who are suffering probably vote GOP. Also the military. I don't understand how they can rationalize it given the treatment by GOP legislators on Capital Hill. The GOP loves to get photo opps with our brave men and women in uniform and wave the American flag. But let those first responders or servicemembers become critically injured or ill, and they are expendable. In this particular instance, the GOP is at fault for failing to assist these public employees who put their lives on the line everyday. The GOP can OK the spending of BILLIONS rebuilding Afghanistan, the country that harbored Osama Bin Laden the leader of the terrorist organization that destroyed the World Trade Center, but we cannot spend one red cent to help firefighters and police officers who are suffering while protecting people and property during and in the aftermath of 9/11.

I was only 8 years old when the attack happened, but I still remember exactly what we were doing in school when we found out what had happened. I watched National Geographic the other night about 9/11 and cried. Please, leave the political bull out of such a tragic event that so many Americans seemed to have forgotten.

Why are we quibbling about how much we should spend on our heroes? Give them the same care we give to our congress, at least. We owe them that.
A totally tragic story. And those folks, brave people all, insisted upon being there. No one forced them to participate. And they have health insurance through their jobs, very, very good health insurance.
My suspicion is that there comes a time when people are responsible for themselves, for their own decisions and actions and the consequences thereof. They should be allowed that privilege.
I'm not buying it. Sure they made a small attempt to make it look accurate but I just ain't buying git. There are SO many factors to consider that it isn't fair to say that 9/11 is the direct cause of any cancers or an increase. The most important (obviously) is the family history and genetics. Were these considered? Didn't say anything about that. This 'study' is just to broad. Just people looking for money to do there surveys and get their own paychecks and using 9/11 and a reason for them to do so. (Referring to the people that did the study).
Also, I don't want to sounds like an ass but to the best of my knowledge, no one made anyone go down there and stay the amount of time they did. FIREFIGHTERS above ALL others knew the risk with the atmosphere and more importantly, had the correct PPE to do their job safely (SCBA's). With the 1000's of photos of police and especially firefighters doing all this work... how many of them had on their job supplied and required SCBA's even on? Those SCBA's were ON their trucks...

Why has no one commented on the very simple fact that none of these first responders where wearing their issued PPE??? They would simply not have ANY problem if they had on their equipment, END STORY. THEY made a decision to not put on their SCBA's and now because of that decision they have an increased chance of cancer? THEY need to be accountable for that clear and simple fact. Because they chose not to wear their gear we have to pay? At my job if I don't wear my equipment I get fired, end story. They has their equipment but did not wear it. No one has addressed that and that is key. Course it limits visibility and is heavy but we are all trained on how to use our gear in various circumstances. There was and is NO reason for them not to wear their gear. tens of thousands of dollars spent on saftey gear collecting dust that day....

Cancer is not new...it has always existed...there is no natural cure.
However, I do agree that the effects of synthetic chemicals and pollution on cancer rates and some other diseases/syndromes is very real.
That's because they didn't have a name or category for it back then. It's like autism - the spectrum and definition of cancer has been increased and more people fall under the category . It's not like all of a sudden it just popped up - it's been around for a long time. But back in the olden days, people just died and they didn't know why. But now thanks to modern medicine, we know why.
Of all the reasons unions are needed, it is often times unions that are the only source of credible information available to an employee.
A person can make up their own mind if they are given credible information as to whether or not to pursue a career in any given field. The building trade unions provide their members with life expectancy numbers. Most of the trade workers can expect to live between 12 and 18 months (not years) after retirement. This is based on the actual number of retirement pension checks paid to it's retired members. The life expectancy rate is available to all union firefighters. Union represented firefighters know when something is out of the ordinary.
Dangerous jobs exist in this country and need to be performed for the greater good of our society. However, an informed worker is more likely to insist on a proper wage and benefit package.

The fire retarding insulation used in the world trade centers was asbestos based.
asbestos-containing products like insulation, drywall, steel and fireproofing materials were incorporated into a number of structures within the World Trade Center buildings. An estimated 400 tons of asbestos were used.
Asbestos has been shown to cause lung cancer and silicosis. This is nothing new. When the buildings fell it pulverized the asbestos helping it to better infiltrate firefighters lungs. Asbestos can legally stay in place in buildings as long as it is not disturbed, so it was not required to be removed. Note: the cost of removing the asbestos from these buildings would have been hundreds of millions $, probably exceeding the value of the buildings. I think it would be far cheaper to insure them and then one month later have airplanes fly into them. A few firefighters get sick, ah so what, I got my money. Just food for thought. (another wild conspiracy theory!!)
To me Politics has nothing to do with this. Do the right thing give them the care they need we need to take care of our own. They take care of us we need to take care of them. Nobody wants to sound like a jerk and speak the truth here. Everyone appreciates what the firefighters did in helping clean up ground zero. But that being said, there are people all around the country that work around furnaces, construction sites, all types of things that are probably not the best for you. They are not viewed as heros. A 19% increase in the cancer rates is small enough to be a coincidence anyway. That is not 19% of the workers there getting cancer. They are just saying there are 19% more cancers diagnosed. In a group that small that could be a very small number, and so could be statistically meaningless. Look guys we appreciate what you did. Just because you helped out does not entitle you to lifetime special treatment. There were thousands of victims of 9/11 not just you guys. Nobody would be crazy enough to say this publicly, but it is starting to look like you firefighters are just milking this for all its worth.
It is true that a lot of people have hazardous situations at work. However, if we are going to overanalyze it, everybody has hazardous situations at work, even if it is just driving to work every morning or afternoon. In this particular case, however, the firefighters did more than what they were told to do. I realize that many people suffered from the dust and the chemicals that were released that day.
The problem is not that. Just yesterday in the news, it was said that the US ranks very low on infant mortality. A baby born in Cuba has a better chance to get medical attention promptly than here. Thats why I have always worked hard and made sure that me and my family are insured. You seem pretty hostile towards me. Thats what I don't understand about people today. It seems like the old values of working hard and self-reliance are not veiwed with any respect today. I hate having to be the jerk on these types of things, but the journalist don't do the work. Surely NYC firefighters are not denied health care when diagnosed with cancer. The point of the story is that the fire fighters, currently, do not have access to the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act. Does anyone know what this means? Maybe it’s a travesty, I have no idea. Why doesn’t the writer expand on this rather than creating a melodrama about 9/11 FDNY victims not having health care. What about all of the other agencies that responded as good patriots? Why is it only the FDNY with such a terrible plight?

The same thing will happen to these men that happened to the Vietnam Veterans that died from the exposure to agent orange, if the federal government has anything to do with it.

These brave men and their family's need to be taken care of, they did not think of themselves and saved many lives that day. They also put the selves at risk to recover the bodies of the ones that perished so the loved ones could have closure.

The 1st Responders were told if they talk about 9/11 Truth(what they really saw on that day), they'd lose their pensions and benefits. They have not gotten any medical disability/compension for the lung and autoimmune diseases.
The FIRST RESPONDERS HAVE BEEN BARRED FROM THIS YEARS' MEMORIAL EVENT, as well. They have decided to created a 'human chain' outside the police baracades, to show everyone they havent gone away on their own accord.

Whenever I read about illness or people being diagnosed with this or that, it puts me at worry and I pondered if this or that would happen to me. My husband is a construction worker and was there from day one until 2 months later. They had no masks for the first 2 days, and then after that, just paper ones that you can buy at Home Depot. The "officials" kept saying the air was safe, but that was BS. We worry every day about the longterm effects.

Brian, the EPA proclaimed the air was safe to breath. They were taken to court over the matter, found guilty of neglect and lies...yet nothing was done to help the victims(1st Responders and people living/working in the area.).
I guess they had some consultant take air samples in the vicinity. Who paid them off.
Republicans ran off and invaded the wrong country (three times) "in retaliation" for 9/11 but heaven help them against being seen to provide any kind of aid to the first responders who were actually there and risking their lives against unknown dangers.

All the first responders already were covered for medical needs at work and would be covered by Congress for anything not already provided thru their luxurious union benefits plans, but I think the Demoncats didn't want to pay for it, just add it on to the debt?

The wounded vets from Iraq and Afghanistan got the best care available, especially on the battlefield. Half were returned to duty within 72 hrs, about 2% lost limbs. Under Bush, they spent vast amounts on the VA, and vastly increased health care spending for the troops.
Now, a lot of the VA does suck, but then, it is a govt program created by Democrats right? so that goes without saying.

Actually, everywhere but TV land it is well known and documented that bin Laden and most of Al Qaeda were gone from Afghanistan long before the first US troops arrived. They fled into Pakistan where George's good buddy Musharrif assured him they were nowhere to be found, while he was feeding al Qaeda money, supplies, arms, and protection the whole time. OK so I'm an occupational health professional who remembers the pure joy most blue collar entities took in thumbing their nose at a gov't officials urging the use of respiratory protection. And now we celebrate their illness as a government failure. Nice. Despite the great pide I took in my work, I get to spent the rest of my life as the person that didn't protect the precious FDNY on 9/11. Firefighters by definition are heroes. This distiction of 9/11 heroes bothers me. What about the other people who gave a hell of a lot in the other parts of NYC?

One thing you seem to be overlooking and if you are really an occupational heath pro as stated- the FF's and construction workers, etc were issued masks to wear, but the cheap paper N95 (read worthless) ones, which rapidly became clogged with dust, preventing the wearer from being able to breath deeply enough to compensate for the heavy exertion of working on the "pile". Even the slightly better protection afforded by the P100 series masks was not of help, once again because of the filters rapidly being clogged with dust. Both of those masks are made for users who are doing normal activities, not heavy manual labor- they don't provide the airflow values that a person breathing heavily and rapidly requires. The result? Most wearers simply chose to discard the mask and work without it. SCBA was of little value, because there were hundreds of people working at any given time, and there was no way that the the 30 minute (10 to 20 minutes when used while performing heavy labor) air cylinders they had could have been refilled quick enough to be of any use, much less having enough SCBA to supply the hundreds of people working at any given time.
So Chesty- yes they were gung ho, but that was hardly the reason that so many went without the masks- they didn't work in practical use. There weren't enough to go around to have them change masks every 10 minutes, either.
I worked around EPA people in the early seventies. it would not have been established without the biggies in chemicals and heavy manufacturing.

For the record, useless paper masks were not handed out. Half-face MSA masks with Carbon cartiridges and particulate filters were issued to workers AND every single individual was fit tested and issued a sticker to go on their ID. Noone without the sticker was to enter to work area. Sadly agreements were in place such that OSHA was not issuing violations and it didn't take long for the workers to figure that out. Very few people wore them.
and yes EPA said the air is safe. This was a lie made to prevent panic in Manhattan. My office was directed to make that statement and refused so Christie Whitman made it on her own. I think the unintended consequence was ambivalence on the part of the workers when the statement was made to calm residents (since nothing could be done anyway).
