Folks, it is information like this that should make it clear that we MUST have regulatory agencies and that cutting research dollars is absolutely insane.
PLEASE think about this. We can now think of a miscarriage as a side effect of using NSAID's. A side effect! It almost sounds harmless, doesn't it? "Golly darling, your miscarriage is just a side effect."
It is so easy to use the Internet these days. It's loaded with information about those side effects. Go look up sucralose. You may think you have fibromyalgia. Your doctor may be treating you for fibromyalgia, but all you have to do is stop using sucralose. Not always, but too many times that is the case.
Check out aspartame and saccharine. Here's what's really scary. Those aren't even medications. We use them every day, and they are most certainly not harmless.
PLEASE! You owe it to yourself and to your family to check this stuff out. This isn't a Chicken Little thing. The dangers are very real.
Taken in high doses for an extended time it can cause internal bleeding. Anyone who has surgery scheduled is told to stop Ibuprofen. Why aren't women who are planning to get pregnant told this?
While 20 weeks seems long, the most dangerous time for this and all drugs is in the period before a woman realizes she is pregnant. Not all women are regular. I believe the average is 6 weeks pregnant when they realize-that is 6 weeks to take medications that may be harmful to the baby. I think most women know to not take these drugs once they are pregnant.
Does this mean that all women who are sexually active (married or single) who have not gone through menapause and not on birth control should never take any medication other thay tylenol ever? What about other medications?
I happen to be on the pill-and plan to intentionally go off when I want to have children-and at that point stop drinking alcohol or caffine and taking medication. Is this the only solution?
"Often the first 20 weeks of pregnancy, the woman does not even know she's pregnant!"
What! I knew I was pregnant before I even missed a period. I was less than four weeks along. Most normal women know they are pregnant after the first missed period if not before.
But many "normal" women don't have regular periods. For those of us who are irregular or have long cycles, they can be several weeks along before knowing.
20 weeks is ridiculous, which is why my comment says irregular women can be several weeks into a pregnancy before knowing. There can still be significant damage done to a fetus in 6 or 8 weeks.
Lawyers know that you cannot sue a company for a side-effect that was never known before. Now, however, these companies know. If they don't list it as a side effect, then they deserve to get sued.
I love how they throw that number out, and then say this may not be proof of anything because we don't know what other risk factors these women may have been exposed to. So, in essence, you did a big study, and the numbers don't mean anything? Thanks. Great story.
That's how science works... they have a data point that prudence says show caution... now they'll try to come up with theories about the other risk factors and make a new study. That's how it works.
They have to report it or risk it being called a cover-up and open to lawsuits.
Oh, and by the way, most OBs worth their degree will tell you not to take anything but Tylenol. Ibuprofen is on the do not take list for most pregnant women.
Pregnancy is a tricky area of research. You are dealing with human subjects and that is HIGHLY regulated. In order to get funding, you have to convince others that what you are going to study is ethical, important, novel, and achievable. I am not sure how Canadian research funding agencies work, but here in the US, there are grants from the NIH for preliminary research that allows the primary investigator (PI) to take the first steps in researching a particular area which has not been heavily studied.
This article is interesting because, in our lab, we research preeclampsia, and we have found that activation of pro-inflammatory pathways might, in fact, lead to preeclampsia. This article suggests that a certain amount of inflammation might be necessary for proper implantation of the fetus into the maternal decidua. However, too much inflammation might cause problems. So, in other words, have no fear, Adrienne, we are working on it!
Well, I am glad someone is working on it, but I wasn't fearful. My OB warned me not to take Ibuprofin and the like when I was pregnant with my first child.
After she got her IUD my wife dropped down to 1-2 cycles per year...
Anyway, this study shows a correlation. That does not necessarily indicate a cause.
For example, it is a true statement that, on average, people with larger feet score better on spelling tests. However, it is incorrect to then assume that larger feet cause the better results on the test. Looking closer, one discovers that the larger feet are in fact largely owned by adults, and the smaller feet by children. So while the original statement was true and factual, it was completely useless.
So why do patients who take anti-inflammatories have more miscarriages? We don't know. It might be because anti-inflammatories have a chance of causing miscarriage. It might be because women with other chronic health problems are likely to take anti-inflammatories to treat those problems, and those other health problems could be causing miscarriages.
But the correlation was strong enough they felt a moral obligation to issue a warning that anti-inflammatories might cause problems. It might take years to prove for certain either way, but they'd feel horrible if it turned out they do cause miscarriages, and they didn't warn people back when they first had a suspicion.
Often the first 20 weeks of pregnancy, the woman does not even know she's pregnant!
Really? Those 5 missed cycles don't seem odd??
A lot of women wouldnt have 5 cycles in a 20wk time frame. Most women that dont find out til that late are irregular, and / or on BC. If you continue taking BC while pregnant, you can still have a period.
Well I don't think it would be that far of a reach (sadly enough) for republicans to require a prescription for a woman of child bearing potential to obtain ibuprofen or naprosyn. Remember some of these conservative law makers support the various personhood amendments that have tried to make it onto the books. If OCPs hinder implantation (maybe and some types) then why not also limit access to commonly taken pain killers too?
Heather - I for one, dont want to have to go to the hospital every time I want to get an NSAID. Its much easier, to just go to the store, rather than make an appt 4-6wks out just to get something as simple as Ibuprofen.
I don't think this is really new information. I was warned not do use ibuprofen during the first trimester when I was pregnant 7 years ago. I believe I read it in "What to Expect When You're Expecting" if I'm remembering correctly.
How old are you, may I ask? If you are under 50, you don't know what people of that age and over experience in pain from arthritis, gout, etc. When you reach that age or have gout, I challenge you to make that same statement. I do have gout, and I try to avoid drugs at all cost. But sometimes the pain is so great where you can't even put a blanket over the foot, you need pain relief. There are many natural remedies to minimize the attacks, but once in awhile, you still get them. I do agree however, if one is under 40, I think they are way over-drugged. You don't need a pill just for a headache or sprung ankle.
Road, I'm 55yr old woman,,and yes I do have a bit of arthritis in one hand, but still rarely take an aspirin for it. I don't take drugs of any form if I can at help it. I don't believe in them. One way to help curb arthritis is to stay active, which I try to do.
There are always alternatives to taking meds. Especially if you are pregnant. I don't understand that statement that many women under 20weeks don't realize they are pregnant. That's baloney. Anyone intuned with their body and how it works will see the changes that 5mos pregnancy creates.
To Road Warrior: to stop the pain of gout, stop eating meat, cheese, and milk. You don't need medicines. Gout occurs because of your body's reaction to products found in animal meats.
The mistaken belief that diet "causes" gout has been around for centuries. You may have heard gout being described as the "Disease of Kings." This is because kings were thought of as having rich diets, and centuries ago it was believed that gout was caused by what you ate. However, today we know that this just is not true.
I have had Fibromyalgia, or as my husband calls it "the fakey-fakey disease", for about ten years now. I have to tell you it is wonderful for pain control. See nothing works on Fibro pain -- no medications, no diet changes, no exercise. You are just in pain all the time, around the clock, forever. If you sprain your knee or have a migraine, well, welcome to the party. I have been on three rounds of so called "Fibro-fixers" Cymbalta, Savella, and Lyrica. Pain I can deal with - crazy I can't. So yeah, if you have a way to end suffering -- anybody's suffering, anywhere, anytime -- then you are just mean to advise or otherwise try to dissuade someone against it!
I wouldn't even take Aspirin!Too many people on too many drugs! You don't really need all that Crap!
Actually, I would die without the medication I'm on. But that's okay by you, right Gloria and those who agree with you? One less "druggie" in the world!
Road Warrior let's just say I'm old enough to vote.Guess what I have Chronic Lymn.I had it since 1992, so the one who was talking about pain with fibromyalgia I know what your saying.I went to 8 doctors before they I found one who was able to pin point it.The dam lymn test kept coming back negative.I was told I had MS, Rhuemetoid Arthritis, I could of had ALS,however I was bitten by a tick had all the symptoms, and when these doctors were telling me all the other diseases I could have,I kept concentrating on that tick bite, because I knew lymn masks a lot of diseases It isn't bothering me right now, but once in a while it'll flair up.Let's just say I'm one of the lucky ones. This doctor had put me on a series of antibiotics and all natural suppliments. He turned out to be a conventional/naturapath M.D.He was a full blown medical doctor who practiced this type of medicine. It is becoming more and more popular.Within 6months I was back on my feet.
My beef people, and I'm not talking people like Megidolaon, who need drugs to live,I have two cases right in my family, one with cancer and whose on chemo, and another with ALS. and is taking any type of experimental drugs to slow down it's progression.
My beef is when you walk through a doctors office and he whips out the prescription pad if your over fifty.A lot of the drug industry is nothing more than a profiteering racket. Many of these people walking through the door do not need a lot of these drugs.they could take care of their problems by alternating their life styles, example high blood pressure and diabetes, losing weight would be a hell of a lot better than popping some pill or insulin in yourself.Especially if they've lost the weight and there's no more diabetes.I know people who are even on pills because they've been deemed pre diabetic.Insane!Cholesterol is another racket, moderate your life style eat foods that would lower your cholesterol, and you're better off than popping these pills with all their side effects.
Some of these pills, these people are taking, the side effects are worse than the disease.
That's what the hell i'm talking about. In retrospect this country has become too dependant on drugs, in many cases, not all but many!
There are always alternatives to taking meds. Especially if you are pregnant. I don't understand that statement that many women under 20weeks don't realize they are pregnant. That's baloney. Anyone intuned with their body and how it works will see the changes that 5mos pregnancy creates.
Not always. Especially when it comes to excruciating pain that is so bad that you can understand why someone would kill themself, just to stop the pain and suffering. Nsaids barely took the edge off. I stayed on them (along with other pain killers) until I found out I was pregnant. Then I still took it, but just tried to not have to take it as much. Also, at 20wks with my son, I had very few changes to my body. I can see how someone might not know, especially if they had a similar experience to mine.
While I agree with the comments above, especially about the lawyers... I have to say thank you to Linda Carroll for doing what several writers I've seen do not; mention the possible biological linkage rather than just throwing out statistics.
However, I think the fact that the researchers did not know why the women were taking the NSAIDs is very relevant and, perhaps, should have been featured more prominantly and earlier given that people may not always take the time to read the whole article.
Happened to me..I was taking Advil Cold & Sinus before I knew I was pregnant. I ended up miscarrying at 14 weeks. I know there was no chromosomal problem with the baby because I had him tested as part of a study.
Your wife had several miscarriages due to a clotting disorder, she should have a genetic test to see if she is missing the retrovirus sequence that allows the birth sac to form which is to clot the cells to support the fetus.
Well, I guess that means Advil and Motrin will be banned by the FDA. How many good drugs that have provided much needed pain relief to millions have been banned simply because some people have some adverse effect from the drugs? Time for lawsuits, too.
Most over the counter drugs (and prescription drugs) should not be taken by pregnant women, especially early in pregnancy, unless the condition warrants the risk of harm to the fetus. This article provides research backing that recommendation, and provides a warning to women who may not be aware of the risks. No one is campaigning to take these drugs off the shelf. Where in this article was a ban called for? The goal of the article was to educate women that this is a risk during pregnancy. I wouldn't horseback ride while pregnant either, but no one is calling for all horses to be shot....
road warrior, Why on earth would the FDA ban NSAID's? So pregnant women shouldn't take them (maybe - more research needed). Pregnant women shouldn't take lots of drugs and you don't see the FDA banning them outright. Be reasonable and sensible.
moral of the story... if you think you might want to have a kid, and you're having unprotected sex... you might want to consider alternatives to pain management...
it's not like being pregnant is some random affliction that people catch like a cold.
Not always. My mom never started to "show" and only went up one pant size in all her pregnancies. You'd never know if you saw her. With me, I did show, but I always stayed small. A few days before I gave birth, someone in the OB's office said I looked maybe 25 weeks along.
I barely showed at all, all the way up until my son was born. When I went in for for delivery, the nurses believed there was a mistake, and that I was maybe 20wks a long...
At 20wks with my first, I was still wearing my normal clothes (which I did up until closer to 8mos or so...
At 20wks with my 2nd, I was def bigger than I was when I had my son. I was actually showing then.
That's a truly illogical statement. You don't have headaches because you don't take aspirin? Wow. Think about what you just wrote. No, really. Think about it. Do you think it still makes sense?????
Virgil is right. There is a rebound effect when you stop taking Tylenol which actually causes more headaches. You also get headaches when you stop caffeine.
Oh, so I should just stop taking the medication that keeps me alive so I'm not in "bondage to drugs?"
@!$%# you. You're fortunate to be healthy. Some of us aren't, and we did nothing to deserve it, and our diseases could not be prevented. We don't deserve your ridicule and condescension. Go be an @!$%# somewhere else.
o'really - Tylenol is not an NSAID. Caffeine is also not an NSAID. If you get headaches when you stop drinking coffee, you're drinking too much coffee. If you get headaches when you stop taking Tylenol, you're taking too many Tylenol!
When I was pregnant with my son, 38 years ago, the Dr. told me not to take NSAIDs. He said I could take Tylenol. OMG! I have never been so sick in my life. I found out I am allergic to the key ingredient. I also didn't take the NSAIDs, and I suffered a couple of horrid headaches because I didn't.
Wait for the studies to come out, and make an informed decision.
Megidolaon, while I agree that "....bondage to drugs." is an ignorant statement, I wouldn't have answered w/ all the cussing. This Hicks person sounds more clueless than anything, & needs a short course in empathy. That & perhaps a little research into the topic before making a comment, & maybe ask a few questions of those of us in "bondage", to get a better feel of things. ( Mr./Ms. Hicks, are you listening?? ). Some people run their mouths w/o really thinking about what the hell they just said; I used to work for a woman like that, & she could never figure out why no one seemed to like her, & unfortunately, did not take any kind of criticism well at all.
And, BTW, I'm bipolar. Not exactly a fun trip, but controllable w/ medication. My "bondage" has kept me reasonably functional, & probably kept me from suicide.
V. Hicks, a little compassion goes a long way. Asking ?s of people might help you to better understand.
How is this news? Anybody who has been pregnant in the last 10 years will tell you that the doctor swears them off of any and all meds except prenatals and acetaminephin. It is like saying we just found out that driving a car increases your chances of getting in an accident. Bottom line, if you are trying to conceive, treat your bod like you already are pregnant.
Yep, this just makes me want to keep popping my pain pills even more. :) And I don't think my doctor really thinks twice about giving me pain killers or anti-inflammatories after I told him on our first meeting to cut all my woman parts out of me.
These drugs ARE NOT approved for use during pregnancy.
They are well known to CLOSE the ductus arteriosus, which shunts blood away from the baby's lungs in utero. In fact, they are GIVEN to newborns who haven't close their ductus on their own to close it.
Tylenol is safe during pregnancy...pretty much everything else is something to be avoided during pregnancy without discussion with your doctor.
Don't stew about your body, your aches and pains. You can stand much more than you think you can. Get busy, do something. I'm 82 and I don't take pain killers. If I am hurt, I get some help, if I just ache, I get busy doing something else. If I need to see a doctor, I go see one, if I wonder if I should see a doctor, I don't.
Great comment lynflo. Some people are so paranoid about their bodies. I am more paranoid about all the mistakes that happen at doctor's offices and hospitals. Crazy number of people harmed every year.
I'm going to have to disagree ladies, I am literally looking at a "take home sheet" a local doctor gave me and it lists Advil as approved during pregnancy. There are obviously other (idiot!) docs out there saying the same thing to women so we do need research and articles combating the misinformation pregnant women are given.
I am a living example. If this drug is similar to aspirin then it should not be taken when pregnant. I lost my only child at seven month pregant at the age of 15. I took 3 aspirins closely apart and at different times during the last 3 months of pregnancy and this is what happend. I bled profusely and had to deliver the baby early and the baby died in 1981. Severe bleeding. I did not knew it eas the aspirin until few years ago I was reading a warning on aspirin bottle or internet about aspirin.
Your body has to swell to accomodate the growth of the fetus....
Anti-inflammatory drugs stop your body from swelling. So.... don't take anything that stops swelling without express permission and instruction from your doctor during pregnacy.
The swelling of pregnancy is not due to inflammation. It is due to the growth of the baby and placenta, increase in fat reserves, and increase in blood volume due to fluid retention and production of more blood cells.
I had a miscarriage in January of this year. Prior to having a miscarriage, I had been taking Ibuprofen almost on a daily basis because I was exercising a lot trying to loss weight. I know someone would say I probably had a miscarriage because I was overweight and had high blood pressure but I know in my heart that it most likely resulted from the Motrin (Ibuprofen). When I received literature from my doc on possible causes of miscarriage, I had no doubt. I did not know I was pregnant till after 2 missed periods. I think there should be a warning for all child bearing women not to take Ibuprofen.
This is like saying if I throw a rock into the air, it will fall down. No *hit?!?! If you take things which thin your blood it increases the risk of miscarriage? Wow who would have thought?
Ummm...when I first became pregnant eight years ago, my doctor told me not to take any NSAID during first and third trimesters. Just to be on the safe side, I didn't take any during second, either. If she knew that then (and I think it's safe to say she wasn't the only doc to have this information), why is this news? Furthermore, why are they doing a big, expensive study on something that's already in the Pregnancy for Dummies book? Please, spend money studying something we DON'T know!
Because there's a difference between conventional wisdom and/or a theory, and a scientifically verifiable fact. There are lots of things that doctors just assumed were true for decades, which seemed to be based in logic and science, which studies later showed to be false. Making sure that we believe what we believe for a good reason, and not just tradition, is always worth funding.
I had surgery a few months ago and was told absolutely no aspirin or ibuprofen for a couple of weeks before and after. Acetominephin was all right, as was the prescribed vicodin. I never even filled that!
I can't believe so many people take these pills everyday.
Oh my God! This huge! Excuse me while I e-mail all my girlfriends.
Often the first 20 weeks of pregnancy, the woman does not even know she's pregnant!
jwhite1083
Only the people who pay attention to their bodies know they are pregnant in the FIRST 20 WEEKS. You are only pregnant for 40 weeks!
"Oh my God! This huge! Excuse me while I e-mail all my girlfriends.
Often the first 20 weeks of pregnancy, the woman does not even know she's pregnant"
jwhite, what planet do you live on...most women know they are prego by 10 weeks at the latest.
Gee, wonder what it does to guys?
Miscarriage risk doubles with use of anti-inflammatory drugs

Hmm, so when are the Republicans going to start passing laws banning Asprin as an abortion drug?
Read the article...
The study was related to non-aspirin NSAIDs
Never since, unlike the donkeys, republicans can read and comprehend

The mistaken belief that diet "causes" gout has been around for centuries. You may have heard gout being described as the "Disease of Kings." Road Warrior let's just say I'm old enough to vote.Guess what I have Chronic Lymn.I had it since 1992, so the one who was talking about pain with fibromyalgia I know what your saying.I went to 8 doctors before they I found one who was able to pin point it.The dam lymn test kept coming back negative.I was told I had MS, Rhuemetoid Arthritis, I could of had ALS,however I was bitten by a tick had all the symptoms, and when these doctors were telling me all the other diseases I could have,I kept concentrating on that tick bite, because I knew lymn masks a lot of diseases It isn't bothering me right now, but once in a while it'll flair up.Let's just say I'm one of the lucky ones.
Diet does play a role in gout. Medications mean it's often not necessary to change one's diet.
I agree with janierock!
Could be many reasons... my wife had several MC's and after seeing a specialist we found out it was clotting disorder she had...
moral of the story is don't assume it's X or Y unless you talk to a specialist.
Time to start stocking up on ibuprofen! Just like light bulbs....
Most women discover themselves pregnant at 6-8 weeks. At 20 weeks, the pregnancy is halfway over and the mother is "showing"...
moral of the story... if you think you might want to have a kid, and you're having unprotected sex... you might want to consider alternatives to pain management...
it's not like being pregnant is some random affliction that people catch like a cold.
Not always. My mom never started to "show" and only went up one pant size in all her pregnancies. You'd never know if you saw her. With me, I did show, but I always stayed small. A few days before I gave birth, someone in the OB's office said I looked maybe 25 weeks along.
While certainly not a majority, it *does* happen.
I was actually showing then.
great - now we are going to have even more ridiculous lawsuits coming out of EVERYWHERE.
When is everybody going to realize that there ARE risks involved in taking any pill or potion that man comes up with.....
I agree with Gloria on this one.I very seldom take an aspirin for a headache. In
fact this could be the reason I never get a headache. I'm thankful I'm not in bondage to drugs.
That's a truly illogical statement. You don't have headaches because you don't take aspirin? Wow. Think about what you just wrote. No, really. Think about it. Do you think it still makes sense?????
scorpio, I'm going to take V.H.'s advice & stop taking my medications. Then my bipolar should go away, right?
!
How did we get from pregnancy to gout?
Don't stew about your body, your aches and pains. You can stand much more than you think you can. Get busy, do something. I'm 82 and I don't take pain killers. If I am hurt, I get some help, if I just ache, I get busy doing something else. If I need to see a doctor, I go see one, if I wonder if I should see a doctor, I don't.
Great comment lynflo. Some people are so paranoid about their bodies. I am more paranoid about all the mistakes that happen at doctor's offices and hospitals. Crazy number of people harmed every year.
Kind of makes sense now that I hear it. Pregnancy happens in an inflamed condition in the lining of the uterus. NSAIDS are ANTI-inflammatory.
I thought everyone already knew this. When I was pregnant with my son, 10 years ago, my doctor told me not to take ibuprofin.
When I was pregnant last year, I was told not to take anything but Tylenol. This is hardly new.
Gave up all my anti-inflammatory prescription meds in favor of aspirin whenever I need it and am doing fine.
However, as aspirin is known to be harmful during pregnacy, it sort of stands to reason the other similar type drugs would be also.
Horse sense, in such short supply these days.
Aspirin is an NSAID
Well, breaking it down to common sense.....
Cold reduces swelling. Is ice water out?
No kidding -- it's a blood thinner.
I had surgery a few months ago and was told absolutely no aspirin or ibuprofen for a couple of weeks before and after. Acetominephin was all right, as was the prescribed vicodin. I never even filled that!
