Lie, Lie, Lie: My parents smoked and I never missed school growing up - Liberals, give it a break - those kids who were absent would have been absent anyway because we baby them these days and parents keep kids home with a little sniffle. Try again guys - why are you doing a stupid study like this when you could be concentrating on why are young people are giving up so quickly and do a study on what motiviates them besides rich parents.
Why does this have to be about liberals? Rick Santorum wanted to ban smoking in your own CAR. Address the issue at hand. It's not a "liberal" issue. I am liberal and I liberally smoke.
My dad smoked in the house until I was 7. What made him quit was the fact that I had been in the hospital EVERY winter until this point with pnumonia, and once in school, I was missing at least one day every month for bronchitus or ear infections. Even now as a middle aged adult, I still have severe scarring in my lungs from all of the instances of sickness back then.
Tobacco is one of the most expensive, addictive, destructive, useless habits one can have. While you are dropping $4-$9 a pack for cigarettes so that you can smell like an ashtray and die early from lung cancer, some exec at the tobacco company is firing up an expensive cigar as he drives the Porsche he bought with your money. Think about that.
My parents smoked and routinely received perfect attendance awards. Similarly, I smoke and my kids get perfect attendance awards. Funny thing too, one of their teachers found out I smoked and expressed surprise to me. She said that she could usually tell the kids of smokers as their clothes smelled. I'm left to guess that not smoking in their presence, usually outside, has had an effect. I suppose I'll leave it to the study authors to decide whether including specific smoking habits in future studies may be pertinent.
They can stop researching this any time they want. They always come up with the same results. I have n idea why they keep on doing this. I would bet it's to get those tax dollars.
BTW smokers don't want you to stop anything you do, so don't try to stop us. In other words buzz off. Amazing the people you can run across.
Food for thought or a lack of understanding about the addiction process of the brain and the understanding that nicotine, as it's treated by cigarette manufacturers, is more addictive than cocaine and heroine?
Tell you what, head over to the local Bingo Hall and count the number of people on oxygen who smoke. I mean, really. If you're one oxygen, you're lungs are pretty much already screwed, so why still smoke.. unless "not caring" just doesn't quite cover it?
Ok? That doesn't mean you are healthy or there is nothing wrong. A lot of times when signs and symptoms start to show, the disease process is very advanced.
Very true, TS. My step-father wasn't diagnosed with lung cancer until his lungs were about 70% gone. By then, it was too late. But, some people smoke all their lives (as he did) and never get cancer. Arguably, the Agent Orange exposure could have done it as well as cigarettes.
My kids rarely ever go to the doc - my pediatrician wonders how they do so well!
I smoke - not in the house and only with the car window open. They want to villify anyone who doesn't act they way they want you too. There are worse things than smoking - not saying its a good thing - just saying we aren't the anti-Christ.
And remember - you think we smokers deserve it - guess what - you better watch what you eat because you are next.
They are trying to legalize marijuana, in some States, but smoking is bad for the solar system. What's worse people running around loaded or a tobacco smoker?
You notice when they do studies like this they are able to get funding. Then the Government wonders where the money went. They have been beating up on smokers and the industry for a very long time and we know the end results. The results have been the same for decades.
Cool, well... I'm sure your kids will enjoy listening to you wheeze and hack up a storm. It will be especially fun for them to watch you suffer from COPD or lung disease. Parent of the year! Typical selfish smoker... why have children if you don't want to stick around to be healthy to see them graduate, get married, etc.?
If you start a study with a bias such as assuming there would be a cause such as smoking as the reason you tend to find it. Did the study look at all the other factors that could have been responsible such as a tendency to keep the kids home longer when they were sick, did the parents use sick days to take the kids on vacation, were the kids prone to allergies, etc. Why don't they do a study on the lack of common sense in people who blame smoking for everything. By the way I don't smoke, have never smoked and have never wanted to smoke. I am more offended by the drunks in the world who I think do more damage to families and our economy than by smokers. Lets do a study on the economic impact of drinkers accounting for divorce, abuse (psychological and physical), work days missed, accidents caused etc. Why can't people just let other people make their choices and live with the results. I have no interest in controlling anyone else life. Oh, by the way I hate seat belts...does that make me evil?
You know if we took all that money that has been wasted on tobacco issues and spent those dollars in the research of any other disease we would have found a cure for most of them. What is wrong with these people? We all know that smoking is bad for the whole world and the solar system so stop wasting the money on it. Find some other good cause to spend those dollars on. Say something like diabetes.
For, I assume, to be educated people and researchers they sure can do stupid stuff. Study something else and stop sending tax dollars on this. We all know about tobacco use, because these people remind us every stinking day of the year. Back off enough is enough. If they want to do something really good find another job. We do not need this studied again.
Cigerette Smokers...Oh,,,I thought they meant "Stoners"!
I bet if they did the same research on Marijuania smokers children they would find a treasure trove of information on child neglect and children missing more than one day of school versus Cigerette Smokers..Just more biased Liberal dribble...
How about "Stoners" who drink alcohol as well as smoke marijuana,,or how about the liberals favorite recreational high,,Cocaine..I wonder how many of there kids miss school, miss eating etc. etc. while Mommy and Daddy get high....and then we have the Liberals at the bottom of the drug chain, the Crack users on Welfare..I mean were not the Federal Food programs and after care school programs created to address this issue of the liberals on Welfare being regular drug users? Like that old John Prine Song,,,"there's a hole in mommy's arm where all the money goes"...
I would suggest that maybe instead of segementing out Cigerette Smokers for special treatement and study they should be looking at Welfare Drug users just as hard and setting up same or similar conditions on them for I know for a fact that these people cost more in Public dollars than cigerette smokers...
But then again as we are constantly finding out, small samples like this of 3100 people does not even remotely speak for America as a whole...It just tells us about 3100 people...
Though I do not Smoke, I believe the people who want to should be able to too. Just like Alcoholics who hurt and injure more people and children every year than do Smokers....
I really object to, and find it very offensive, and it worries me about loss of Rights, the way the Liberals have chosen a selected group or segement of our Socieity and have tried very hard to turn them into an "evil group of people", sort of what the Nazis did to the Jews...
Their methodology and propaganda are nearly identical to what Hitler used to separate the Jews from the "superior race" which is sort of the same Mentality that Liberals and Highly Educated people exhibit daily here in America...
But then again look at our failure for a President, all these highly educated Liberals he has surrounded himself with have destroyed the country...So that should give you a real solid clue about Academia and Liberals as a whole....
Stop paying for research of smoking hazards; we all know smoking is bad for everyone, including second hand smoke. Spouse and I were smokers w/two children for 20 years - none of us smoke for past 10 yrs. Children hardly missed a day of school because of smoking. But, why did we all quit? Because as adults, we showed all the symptoms smoking makes after years of doing it. STOP THE MONEY FOR DOING RIDICULOUS RESEARCH ON SMOKING EFFECTS. GOOD GRIEF! PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW THIS BY NOW.
In my professional capacity helping individuals with smoking cessation, what I have observed is that while many cite "being a good role model" for their kids as one of the reasons they want to quit, most seem to be good parents and take measures to protect their kids from second hand smoke, like not smoking in the house or car. I wonder if these kids who have more absences from school have the parents who are just in denial about the dangers of cigarette smoke?
In a professional capacity helping people to quit smoking, I have observed many clients who are parents will "state setting a good role model for their children " is a strong motivator to change. However, I have also noticed virtually all take appropriate measures to protect their children and grand kids from second hand smoke such as not smoking in the home or car. I wonder if the kids who are getting sick more frequently have parents who just totally deny the negative health effects of smoking?

na man... they're living in the slums, probably on food stamps, and probably can't afford their habits.
I find it ironic that a good majority of "poor" people smoke.
I'm guessing it has to do with hopelessness, and despair... misery if you will.
they know smoking is deadly... and maybe they just want to end it that much sooner...
At least that's my speculation.
And for the nit wits that do smoke, and are taking offense to this... why are you destroying your lungs, and pretending like you care?
Stop doing it. sure it'll take some effort, and failure, but dam it... you care, don't f'in do it. dugh...

trying= failing. just do that !@#$% and get it done.
and it will be done. (of course it's alot like that corvette when you were a kid, after ... you wanna drive it, just accept that it's that far out of reach :p)

I hate seeing otherwise good replies ruined by one word. I'll let you figure out which one it is.
And for what it's worth, I'm one who happens to agree with you.

I am sick of tobacco providing welfare to these researchers.
BAN ALL TOBACCO NOW!
Only if you ban all liquor with it. Both are responsible for deaths, and alcohol is also responsible for extra stupidity.
/lights another one.

.... ..... ..... yes yes!! but ... why do those parents smoke! I think the realllll answer lies there.
They just don't give a @!#$%. thus they smoke.
and if they just don't give a @#$% about their lungs... how much are they really worried about their kids brain?
Food for thought.
Food for thought or a lack of understanding about the addiction process of the brain and the understanding that nicotine, as it's treated by cigarette manufacturers, is more addictive than cocaine and heroine?

Nice high horse.
Jeremiah... please tell me that your'e not going to procreate.
lol stupid people do stupid things, and say even stupider things...
But that's cool, because smokers can quit.. not once, not twice, not thrice.. but as many times as it takes.
Ignorance is just that ignorance , or Ignororance... either you do , or you don't..
I think Yoda said it best though :p do or do not, there is no try.
Anyone who wants to quit smoking can, if they want to.
Last saw a Dr. in 1978 for a key employee physical, have smoked for 56 years. I can't help it if the gene pool is becoming a bunch of weaklings.
Ok? That doesn't mean you are healthy or there is nothing wrong. A lot of times when signs and symptoms start to show, the disease process is very advanced.

There sure have been a lot of studies going into print lately. I'm feeling a little skeptical with the data. Who signs up for these types of things?
wonder what the ratio would be to missed days of school due to bullies vs. children of smokers..
I'd like to see a study about missed school days for kids living near industrial parks or on near a highway or heavy bus line.
Ohhhh pleeeez. Is there anything smoking is NOT responsible for?
My kids rarely ever go to the doc - my pediatrician wonders how they do so well!
I smoke - not in the house and only with the car window open. They want to villify anyone who doesn't act they way they want you too. There are worse things than smoking - not saying its a good thing - just saying we aren't the anti-Christ.
