Isn't the answer obvious? SUMMER CAMPS!!!!!!!!!! We need more summer camps for kids where they live with at least 7 other kids in a cabin, with about 4 cabins in an area, and they play all sorts of movement games. Unfortunately, these camps have been priced out for the middle class. I send a kid to camp every summer anonymously and it costs about 1600 for two weeks. In 1968 when I started, it cost $40 a week, or $80 for a full session. By the time that I left in 1978, it was about twice that, but still affordable. Who can afford 1600 for two weeks for a kid? The whole family could spend a week in Disney Land or some other kiddie wonder.
"Three lifestyle modifications may be key to triggering this transformation: becoming more socially engaged, presenting yourself with new challenges and staying physically active, During said."
In relation to children...
becoming more socially engaged...allow them ample time to run, bike, and play with many different friends of their choosing in free, spontaneous, safe but uncontrolled environments (this does not mean adult organized sports, scheduled lessons, and school related activities monitored and scheduled by adults.
presenting yourself with new challenges...let them explore, create and figure things out for themselves while interacting and playing with other children in wide open spaces...and in a non-stressful, non-structured environment, as opposed to having every minute of their day structured, scheduled and monitored by adult supervised activities and lessons in confining settings with adult stressors put on every minute of their childhoods.
staying physically active...put away the game boys, hide the TV controllers, turn off the computers and IPhones and send them outside to run, climb, bike, play pick- up ball games and actually socialize and interact with their peers, rather than staring at a tiny screen sending text messages...or interacting with "virtual characters" on violent video games.
Article Quote..."It may be possible to activate this pathway with medication, the researchers say."
And here in the above quote is the problem...lets hope this study doesn't lead to another drug, another pill in a misguided attempt to treat and medicate the problems we create, rather than allow common sense to bring healthy changes in our attitudes and actions that could heal the problem in a natural way.
Gee, put down the game controller, log off Facebook, ditch the smart phone, grab some friends and get outside and go do something...holy crap...and you'll be healthier for it?!
Wow, it's an absolute freaking health epiphany! So maybe this extravagant Western lifestyle - where we've become so indolent we have to have our toilets automatically flushed for us - isn't all it's cracked up to be after all!

A good Physical Education program in schools should provide all three of these key ingredients to a healthier lifestyle. A good Physical Education teacher nows how to provide positive social interactions to the students through different activities. When developmentally appropriate activities are chosen and taught, they are challenging enough for the students, but also allow enough success to keep them interested in the activity. When interest in the activity is high, they will be more likely to do that activity out of class as well as in class.
What a concept. I believe everyone knows that staying active will keep weight in check. How many kids do you see outside at the park, in their yard, or playing out at schools, none. That is the reason why we have childhood obesity, besides the fact that parents are the number issue when it comes to childhood obesity.
