"We really need to be careful with these because [...] their safety hasn't been well studied."
Oh, really? By whom? And whose fault is that?
Come on, get real: the therapeutic use of herbs has been going on since the human race began and there are people who know jolly well what's safe and what isn't. The reason W. and his ilk haven't "studied the safety" of herbs - (well or even badly) - is that no pharma multinational is ever going to fund them for it.
Mistletoe is poisonous is large doses? So is practically every Rx we'll ever receive from guys like this.
I've been wanting to study Herbology for a while now, I fully believe in 'natural healing' when possible and I agree, the use of therapeutic herbs has been going on since time began, recorded and studied highly in ancient Chinese medicines as well. Much like you wouldn't take random medicinal drugs from a person who isn't a doctor, you shouldn't take random herbs without speaking to a person who knows what their herbs.
What actually works is Red Yeast Wine which is imported from China. Lowers blood pressure and gets rid of the "bad" cholesterol. I know that sounds crazy. A friend of mine who is a medical professional ( I am a medical researcher--not an M.D) was talking about it . I thought maybe she was overstating the effects. (though she is very respectable) BUT then I did some research. Sure enough it has the same chemical compounds as todays statins. The big pharmacies sued around 2003 to ban the import since they were selling the exact same compound. I could NOT believe it---I thought wow, wait till the conspiracy theorist get ahold of this. Just google red yeast wine.
sorry I cant find a way to delete my earlier comment.
wait ....I want to state the obvious. You should always see a doctor for regular yearly checkups and always take your medicine exactly how the doctor prescribed. The problem with a bottle of Red Yeast Wine is you never know if the batch contains lots of statins or just a few :) I think the red yeast wine is fine if you are in good health, normal weight and just want a little wine a couple of times a week. Millions upon millions of chinese drink the stuff .....but you can no longer get it in the U.S. after the law suit anyway.
I don't believe they haven't been studied enough.........I would bet the farm they have been studied but the real problem is that we can grow them ourselves and bypass them.......just a thought.

I have lots of treatment cases for hypertension with herbs. However to treat hypertension with herbs is not to choose particular herbs but to design herbs
fittable for the patient's physiological conditions. Designing herbs is a prescription of the doctor in east asian medicine. The basic theory of herbal medication is different from that of western medicine. It is too long the theory of herbal medication to explain to you in this comment. I want you to visit the site and confirm the plain truth of herbal medication. www.harabiclinic.com
As usual they forget to tell you to make sure the doctor tests you for low vit. D and low magnesium and low B-12. As the FDA has said, we are woefully low in magnesium and diet alone may not help. So, supplements are needed ,as some foods you have to take too much of to get benefits,as too much of some fruits are bad for diabetics. You need to educate your doctor.
I am a doctor of east asian medicine. and I have lots of treatment cases for hypertension with herbal prescriptions. However the basic theory and practice of herbal prescription has been misknown to the world. I would like to point out what is wrong with such this kind of studies. First, there should be a pathology of hypertension for herbal prescription. Why the hypertension? Chronic disease, humidity, renal problems, liver problems, vessels and others? Accoding to the cause of the hypertension, the herbal medication shall be designed to get rid of the cause of hypertension. So it is not valid that so and so herbs will be good for hypertension. It shoud be that the design of so and so herbs will be good for the hypertension of particular one because the cause of hpertension is so. The design(=composition of herbs) is not so easy for common people to understand how the herbal design can changes physiological condition. Ok. it is not easy to end my explain for everyone's understanding. So I will introduce herewith my site " www.harabiclinic.com " Everyone confirm the hypertension treatment case in it.
No kidding.......tomorrow we will have an article from BigPharm warning us not to try this and letting us know how many people will die without their drugs.
Any plant food that benefits health can be called an herb. For example Indians put a lot of cayenne pepper on their food to make it very hot. But cayenne pepper is possibly the best herb in American herbology. Webmd.com has an article saying that drinking orange juice lowers high blood pressure. Do people need to be concerned about drinking orange juice?
Note that an 8 fl oz glass of orange juice contains over 500 mg of potassium. The same amount of coconut water has even more potassium. Although the drop in blood pressure from orange juice is not blamed on (accredited to) the potassium. It is blamed on the phytochemical hesperidin that is in it. Also after the earthquake in Japan, articles said that hesperidin can help with excess radiation.
Green tea is one of the healthiest herbs and studies show that it reduces high blood pressure. That is not due to the caffeine in it but due to the theanine that is in it.
It's best to try everything and decide your self what works ! I question doctors advice, doctors tend to think more on how much money can they make from each patient.Example: I have great retirement insurance and when I went to Dr Fluery in Pocomoke,Md (been seeing them for 12 years, they accepted my insurance) They told me I had sever hypertension 210/145 and I would have to come back every 4 days to see them. 3 days latter I received a bill for 210(rip off) dollars for my visit and was told the insurance(Aetna PPO) takes too long paying them so I have to pay on my own and not use my retirement insurance ! INSURANCE IS PART OF MY RETIREMENT PACKAGE ,IT"S WRONG GREEDY DOCTORS WANT THE MONEY FASTER AND MORE OF IT ! THIS HAPPENED TWO YEARS AGO I HAVE NOT SEEN A DOCTOR SINCE ! DOCTORS ARE TOO GREEDY AND DON"T CARE ABOUT PEOPLE ONLY PEOPLE"S MONEY ! The girls at the desk(Margret) really enjoy telling people the doctor wants cash and will not take their insurance ! THE MEDICAL PROFESSION IS IN TROUBLE AND THE PATIENTS ARE PAYING WITH THEIR LIVES !
