Try this easy remedy. 8 oz of milk heated but not boiled. Stir in 2 Tbl of honey and 1 Tbl of real vanilla extract. You now have a real tryptophan cocktail that will make most anyone sleepy.
Everything has to be just right for me to sleep thru the night. I haven't found much of anything that makes me do that. A good night's sleep revs me up so much that unless I hike up hill for 5 miles the nexxt day and totally expend the mental energy as well I'll not build up a need for more sleep the next night. The wrong food before bed, noise, thirst anything wakes me then I start thinking and it's all over.
salsachick...I am the same way. I go to sleep just fine but wake up about 3 hours later and have trouble going back to sleep due to racing mind.
I went to the doctor for some slight chronic pain and he subscribed some Amitriptyline in very small dosage of 10-20mg. It didn't do much for the chronic pain but I found it allowed me to sleep through the night which is something I haven't done since being an adult. I'm 59 now. I take it about an hour before going to bed. It does make you a bit groggy when you first wake up but doesn't take long for it to go away. Ask your doctor about it.
StackDat...you might want to go to a Lyme Literate doctor (LLMD) to see if you might have a tickborne disease. I had the same issues you had..waking up with a racing mind and panic in the middle of the night...once I was treated for Lyme and babesiosis, another tick disease, I've been great. Good luck!
I usually use Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime Extra tea. It's a chamomile tea with added valerian. It makes me relaxed enough to fall asleep not long after finishing the cup.
I've been taking one or two Valerian Capsules about an hour before heading for bed, it does seem to help falling asleep. That stuff really does stink though!! Funny thing I discovered also. When I empty the bottle of Valerian I put it on the floor and our cats go crazy over it! Just like Catnip to them I guess?
I have found that a session of sex with a young beauty will relax myself and make everything right in the world at that moment and I nod off in her arms, relaxed and fulfilled.Better than food and drugs!!!!
Food turns to fat. Try telling the wife you need to release some melatonin. It's the least she can do cause she know you'll keep begging and this will shut you up.
In Pleasantville all these "remedies" sound great. BUT what about people like me who suffer from sleep apnea and insomnea? Yes, I've had the sleep studies and I use a CPAP for all of the (almost) 4 hours of sleep that I try to get. I've tried every wives tale out there and for some..... it just sucks and it's exhausting to wake up everyday tired.
Sorry you're going through this. It won't help for apnea, but I was finally prescribed progesterone cream and pills to take at night - and I can finally sleep through the night, at least through 6:00. Seems like a lot of people are short on progesterone, yet it really doesn't get much publicity.
The best natural aid out there is a combination of Valerian Root, Skull Cap, Passion Flower and Melatonin. All can be purchased at GNC or any other vitamin/herb store. Just follow directions on the bottles. I take these 5 days a week and lay off on the weekend. Works like a charm and I sleep like a baby.
Hasn't tryptophan been debunked? "It wasn't the turkey at Thanksgiving that caused the nap, it was we ate too damn much." My bedtime ritual if I am having problems sleeping is a couple tart cherry extract capsules, a melatonin, a liquid cal and magnesium and a couple of valerian root capsules. Makes me tired thinking about it.
I do not eat or drink anything, except water, for at least two hours before bed. My latest sleep study shows I "unconsciously" wake up 20 times per hour. I don't get any REM cycle. I leave for work early in the am and get home 11 hours later totally exhausted and not able to sleep. It's a vicious cycle. I take two prescription medications to help fall asleep and stay asleep. They work for about 4 hours... Is anyone else out there like this? Or does cherries and warm milk really do it for you?
i, too, am on a sleeping pill. I can get to sleep, but i never stay asleep. It is so depressing. I haven't gotten a full night's sleep in years, and probably never will
Four tablespoons of sage in one cup of water brewed for four hours sounds pretty disgusting to me. It's probably the four hour wait that puts you to sleep.
Try chicken soup with egg noodles and celery root you may add potatoes and carrots. It works for babies the trick is the celelry root. You can also make tea with bitter orange leaves(naranjo) It will make you sleep like a baby.
Pole-caught tuna? Organic milk? I wouldn't even know where to buy such things even if I thought I could afford them! I think I'll just take my chances with ice cream and cookies!

And a bunch of extra calories I don't need. I just take straight tryptophan and pass fat inducing calories.

I can think of another herb that's a GREAT sleep helper!
I can think of one too! are you thinking of what I'm thinking of... ;)
Is it non-addictive, non-habit forming, and 100% natural?
And I'm suspecting currently illegal.
Currently. It used to be illegal for blacks and women to vote, you know.
I have found that a session of sex with a young beauty will relax myself and make everything right in the world at that moment and I nod off in her arms, relaxed and fulfilled.Better than food and drugs!!!!
Can't remember the last sleepless night I've had since I met Rosy Palmer
Joseph....you are sleeping well. So well you're dreaming!!!

Do you mean you wake up every two hours crying 'cause your diaper needs changing?

Whatever happened to not eating or drinking before bed?

Try Cannabis (marijuana) if it's legal for medicinal consumption in your state. Seriously, it works. You will sleep.
I think I'll stick to an Ambien and a stiff drink.
Turkey and pumpkin pie works for me - Thanksgiving afternoon nap, and sleep all night long, snuggling with my honey! {{:-))
There is a great herb out there we all can try..and i guarantee it will help you sleep:)
No, we can't all try it because some people don't use illegal "herbs", even if they should be legal.

Great advice....keep it natural.
which is the better position to allow your body to fall asleep?
I know of a great herb that helps you sleep. You smoke it!
which is the better way to relax in bed before falling asleep?
Sex helps. Any position you want.

Oreos and a tall glass of 2% milk work for me everytime. Anything scientific to that combo?

I have tried all of these and I still wake up in 5 hours. I do not feel tired though so my physician says I must be getting the rest I need.
