People shouldn't be surprised. Everybody wants to cut government spending, so they are gutting the food safety laws and taking Inspectors out of the plants. After all the companies are supposed to be producing safe food. We all know that the only thing they care about is profit. After all who really cares if a few people die or get sick? And I work for FSIS so I know.
This is where corporate farming gets us. They are allowed to police themselves, sue anyone who doesn't like it, and then poison us. It's time to get back to the small family farm which has almost been outlawed in the US, because of corporate giants that control the FDA. Watch Food Inc. if you'd like to see how your food is created.
Completely agree. Was shocked when I first saw the program. If we took the money lobbyists pay the government for big farming, and used it towards feeding the needy, our country would have no hunger problems.
With the reductions placed on regulatory agencies, get used to this type of event. I fear that this will become not too uncommon in the future. We're shooting ourselves in our shared foot.
Rather than "get used to it" we need to vote out of office all congressmen who believe in corporations as individuals and vote for the rich at the expense of 98% of the rest of the population.
Just wonder what is the role play here and investigate this kind of situation, the DOH or the FDA ? kind of confuse and nothing is been done correctly.
Jensen Farms is an organic grower, which is one of the things that makes it different, but the curious bit of information is that a provider of human waste "biosolids" apparently applied some of its spanky sewer sludge on a field across the road from one of the Jensen Farms' cantaloupe fields several years ago, which depending on runoff, wind, and so forth certainly provides a plausible explanation for only Jensen Farms out of all the farms in Colorado having Listeria monocytogenes contamination problems . . .
The company that sprays the human waste, known as biosolids, confirmed to 7NEWS it has been contacted by investigators. State investigators confirmed they want to know if biosolids may have caused the contamination. The biosolids come from New York and are shipped to Colorado to be disposed of because New York cannot handle the volume of its human waste.
Apparently, the great state of New York is having problems disposing all its poop, so why not ship it to Colorado and spray it in an agricultural valley?
Gee whiz! What a super idea . . .
One cannot help but wonder how many other states in our great nation receive regular shipments of New York poop?
Of course, Jensen Farms does not use New York poop on its fields, preferring instead to use what appears to be a blend of cattle, pig, and chicken poop combined with "nonorganic" phosphorus-based fertilizer:
“Jensen Farms uses two types of commercial-grade fertilizer: heat-treated or pasteurized organic fertilizer and phosphorus-based nonorganic fertilizer. Both are approved for use on cantaloupe, among many other crops,” said spokeswoman Amy Philpott.
At the very least, food distributors (especially large and interstate ones) should be forced to disclose their suppliers by address (not just state, country, or plant number), either on package or (IF the package is too small to fit them) on a central database.
Maybe if the suppliers know they can get a more instant knock-on-door from the Gov or their buyers, they'll wash and check their stock and hands better. It's much tougher to wash an epidemic.
Well, the Republicans and Tea Party want to get rid of the FDA because that's too much big government control. Be careful what you wish for cause you just might get it!
Yep, I'm the stupid one that blames the teapublicans who want to DO AWAY with the EPA, FDA, and next the FAA, HTSB, and any other federal agency that exists to protect consumers. I am as disappointed as anyone in Obama's performance. Whether you agree with his policies or not, at least he's not out there spouting ignorance and promoting anti-science. But given your comments, I suspect that you are one of the stupidos out there that don't believe in science. Please pray to get the @!$%#e out of our food.
The melons causing the listeria panic are NOT from Rocky Ford.
This is correct, since Jensen Farms is located in Holly, Colorado, which is 80 miles from Rocky Ford, Colorado . . .
Holly, Colorado is on the Colorado and Kansas border and geographically is nowhere near the Rocky Ford valley, as is easily seen by studying satellite images and maps . . .
And from yet another perspective there is no reason not to use the "Holly" moniker, since it is famous for sugar ("Holly Sugar") made from sugar beets, which in 1988 was acquired by Imperial Sugar . . .
Jensen Farms was using the moniker "Rocky Ford" to market its cantaloupes, which is another curious bit of information, for sure . . .
For sure!
The thinking here in the sound isolation studio is that the Rocky Ford melon growers need to trademark the "Rocky Ford" moniker in the same way that the onion growers in Vidalia, Georgia trademarked the moniker for their unique and tasty onions, really. . .
Here we are tip-toeing around the real problem in order to be politically correct again. What can you expect when the people who pick and process our foods are not us? How much love and caring would you put into your work if it was going to Pakistan or Somalia? How much can the corporate farmers care about our health when they only have time to watch the bottom line? All the rules and procedures in the world are meaningless if we don't care.

I only eat fruits and vegetables out of a can, except bananas. No problems.
Can you say BPA...yummy. I'll take my chances with fresh fruits and veggies, thank you.

I am shocked this food was even grown in the U.S. as most of it comes from foreign countries.
i wonder if this is from a GMS (Genetically Modified Seed) crop? any takers?
Nah...I think its more like illegal pickers pissing in the water supply...
I've wondered the same thing, Timmah

This means everything will be organic, seems some one is doing a good job killing the fields.

And this is all USDA approved, which certainly is spanky, for sure . . .
For sure! :-o

Wonder what fruit and/or veggies will be next?

Look what we thought we would get with Obama and where we are now with Obumer; careful what you vote for, you might get it
This happened with the FDA. So why have them?
When all else fails...blame Bush, blame the Tea Party, blame the Republicans, blame........there's got to be somebody other then O......
Who can we blame......there must be somebody I disagree with that I can blame....

Really! :)
So why we do need these federal agency's for ???.
To keep our food supply much safer than it would be without them.
