It is nice news to hear that coffee has benefits. I would suggest to be puritanical in your consumption of coffee, ie. reserve sugar or cream substitutes and cream unless you are indulging in a special latte or dinner desert type drink. We all know the stomach and dental problems related to the goodies. I drink my morning cup black and will add a little sugar later if I have seconds or thirds. At least it isn't some corn syrup thing already in the product! The more you make fresh, the more control you have on what is in it! :)
The first question that came up for me as pertains to the accuracy of this study, was who was in the control group. I agree with the one evaluation by the professor who cautioned on possible spuriousness due to the fact that you are taking this from a group of career women, nurses. Well, guess what!!! You are lacking a fair assessment based on a random and variety based control group! Women who are working these days will be much less depressed than those out of work, or in other types of lower paying jobs, like teachers who are paid less and burnt out, or cashiers at a big chain store, for example!
Those are some of the ifs I come up with, but in knowing this, it is good news that they are not finding a link between coffee and cancer, or are they? Caffeine is a little like nicotine, is it not? I had a friend in college who stopped drinking any coffee or taking any sugar because she swore it gave her lumps in her left breast? She said the lumps went away after she quit the coffee on the advise of a natural health expert. I am no expert on this but am curious if anyone knows more about this? I would like to stay clear of money making motives for the coffee producers and focused on actual health results pure and simple here on behalf of the women and the pink ribbon. From what I have read, it seems that coffee has antioxidant properties like teas, and cuts down oral, throat, prostrate and other cancers although it does work like a diuretic and can dehydrate if one does not drink water also through the day. Also, Caffeine is a stimulant and so it is to be watched carefully or cut down in use by children, elderly, pregnant women, and those who suffer from hypertension. I found a nice generally informative article with further details here on coffee and cancer if anyone is interested:
Adding some fat-free milk to the coffee would be an aide in preventing depression as well. Lack of Vitamin D can cause serious depression, especially for those subject to the winter blues. And the milk will help buffer all that acid in the stomach.
Studies like this one and many others that may seem a little ridiculous often lead to ideas and/or products, medications, devices, that benefit citizens in ways not even contemplated during the study.
I wonder why moderate coffee and/or caffeine consumption would only benefit women with depression risks and not men also? Anyway, I have always believed that my coffee fix, several times per day, was beneficial in ways beyond the initial boost in alertness. Plus coffee, good coffee, tastes and smells so damn good!!
I love coffee. Not only does it taste so refreshing, it is very medicinal for me. My antiseizure medication makes me very lethargic (think of the zombies in oh...any zombie movie except the tweaked out ones in that Will Smith movie hehe). Without ze java, me be a-living dead girl...sorry I'm on my 4th cup of French roast.
The study reported a relative risk of only .8 for 4 cups or more per day. All confounding conditions were self reported. This is what people call junk science or science by news journalist or third rate thinking. A relative risk between .5 and 2.0 is considered insufficient to suggest statistical correlation. MSNBC should be sued by any woman who tries this and runs into other health issues.
A part of me wonders if the coffee benefit against depression is a social aspect too. I moved to the West Coast and noticed that people going out or meeting for coffee is a very common thing. I have witnessed strangers doing a little conversing while waiting in line or sitting down to drink it. We do have lots of drive up espresso shacks too though.
Probably not a huge factor. I'd be happier if I socialized more.
Considered "depressed" IF diagnosed AND receiving antidepressants???? Really? REALLY? PahLease. Most depression is never reported - much less diagnosed and medication? Even a more rare occurance.
Makes sense to me. Three cups of coffee before work revs me up enoug to speak up more readily and therefore I'm not as suppressed, opressed and depressed.
May it's just a coincidence, but Dunkin Donuts has a advertisement promoting their....wait for it, wait for it....COFFEE---- right next to this article. :-)
You know, it might just be my cynical self, but when you're drinking three or more cups of coffee in a day, it's rather hard to be sad when you're hopped up on caffeine and jonesing for your next cup.
Also, what this and other stories are omitting -- the possible association was noted in OLDER (post-menopausal) SMOKERS who are NURSES. This study is no one speaks to women as a whole.
i'm male and i'd say it sure works for me too.
i just pour a cup of liquid sunshine from Big Island Coffee Roasters and my day is off to a wonderful start
Is it just me or are these studies starting to sound like a politician wrote them, meaning they say a lot things that MEAN nothing.
Indeed. I hope this is not funded by taxpayer's money.
More than likely it was funded by Starbucks and Foldgers.
That's a good one, CW.

Agreed.... and brewing a cup now! Ooohhh the smell, the taste........
I'm old and drink 3 cups of coffee a day...YEAH for me! lol
This study was proudly brought to you by Starbucks.

More money wasted on bogus studies.
I hate coffee. However, I do like a good iced tea or Diet Pepsi and a No Doz. Is this the same thing or is it something in the coffee? Clarify.
Iced tea, Diet Pepsi, and No Doz, and coffee, all have caffeine in them.
Guess what alcohol & pot does for women (hint: both are depressants)?

I work in the field of sleep medicine. I have to imagine it's helping the group that has undiagnosed sleep apnea LOL.
If it is the caffeine that impacts depression, then would tea have the same benefit?
Considered "depressed" IF diagnosed AND receiving antidepressants???? Really? REALLY? PahLease. Most depression is never reported - much less diagnosed and medication? Even a more rare occurance.
Please do not exaggerate the coffer drinker. I just have two cups of morning coffee and that is about it. It is not an addiction.
We need to understand what addiction means. And I am not an addict of coffee drinking.

coffee also good for men?

This is one of the better reports of the coffee-depression study. For how it was uncritically reported in the UK see here
