Meh, that's life. It's a struggle against all odds, yet somehow it works. You can complain about how tough and deadly life is, but complaining doesn't seem to fix the problem very often.
Accept that you will have trials and tribulations, and deal with them the best you can as they come at you.
Yes, because we all know that vaccines are a soft kill method cooked up by the Illuminati shadow government in order to "thin the herds" and make the world easier to rule. That's why everyone who get a vaccine becomes sterile and can't have children any more, right? Or was that their children becoming sterile? Or autistic? Or retarded? Oh I don't know, but those vaccines are dangerous and you're better off catching diseases "naturally" and developing an immunity to them that way, like these people who caught listeria are doing, right?
Why is it that every topic on "health" somehow becomes an anti-pharma rally? First, BigPharma does not produce vaccines, that is the BIOTECH industry. Second, vaccines are typically produced to provide immunity from virus, not bacteria. That's because we have antibiotics to combat bacterial infection, while viral infection is very difficult to treat after the fact. Much better model to confer immunity rather than wait for infection.
We are terrible at monitoring our food chain in the US. We create agencies like the FDA and I swear the money does not go for on site inspections. It goes into managers pockets who do very little. Their are poor nations with less regulations that have a safer food chain? Why is that? Maybe instead of the US consistently worrying about other Countries we should elect people concerned about the US and only the US.
Although I agree with you about our corrupt beauraucratic system being a grand and elaborate form of incompetence that leads to people's suffering and death like this, I have to ask one question. Which "poorer countries" are you talking about? Not all of them have better regulations than we do. India certainly doesn't. Please cite sources if possible.
The citizens of the United States are currently electing Democrats, who care absolutely nothing about you. They are only interested in pushing their socialist agenda. They will be in control of everything and you will be their slaves.
Um, no, the last election we put Republicans in control. And your partisan blinders keep you from seeing that ALL politicians are dishonest and have alterior motives regardless of political party affiliation.
Many products on the market will totally aware of the Federal government, in the past several years not inspecting products as they should be, so that leaves the market opened for these type of bacterial poisoning.
To be fair, neither the super wealthy Republicans nor the super wealthy Deomocrats eat the same food we do.
Having said that.... my sister and brother-in-law are pretty wealthy and she does her own shopping at Wal Mart Super Center. In summer she grows her own vegetables.
Since June there have been 11 food recalls in 4 months, less than 3 per month. Prior to June there were 36 recalls in 6 months, or 6 per month. In 2010 there were 64 recalls - average of over 5 per month. In 2009 there were 71 recalls - 6 per month, and in 2008 there were 59 - 5 per month. Source USDA http://www.fsis.usda.gov/fsis_recalls/Recall_Case_Archive/index.asp
IF anything the trends verify republican claims that relaxing regulation and self-policing in a free market work. But hey, let's blame it all on Republicans! Easy target afterall for those who don't care to educate themselves on the topic.
P.S. I am not republican or democrat, I believe our partisan politics are ripping the country apart. I AM for smart, evidence-based decision making. I am not in favor of disbanding the FDA or USDA, I am in favor of trimming fat and streamlining current processes to become more efficient and effective. That does NOT necessitate more regulation or more spending.
President Obama has proven to be a much wiser President than each and every Republican President that has espoused instituting Supply-Side Economics into the American National economic policy.
Supply-Side Economics has been proven to be a failure, and is partially responsible for this outbreak, and fully responsible for the current recession/near great depression/banking failure. Supply-side economics as instituted by the GOP, generated policies that diminshed regulation of all types, and diminished the regulatory agencies from being/becoming effective.
The Founding Fathers instituted laws to diminish the control of the British on American lives, it didn't diminish American lives like the current GOP/Supply-siders/Free Marketeers.
I really don't know where to start but here goes ... 13 people died because of these melons I'm really sorry BUT people die, If we go by this story we need to recall ALL cars more people have died in car wrecks in the last 30 min than in all the melon scare.People we don't need this kind of news reporting ,now have we ruined this business, can he sell anymore melons will he be sued (of coarse) Please please wash all melons , fruit ect but get a grip on life. There are too many stories like this that don't deserve any more than WASH IT BEFORE YOU EAT IT.
How many melons were eaten a lot I would guess, Very sorry for the people who died but If this didn't get them something else more than likely would have.
Imagine the horror when the company realized how many people died and got sick. Can that company continue as a business? My family owns businesses. I know how tough it is in this over-regulated environment to make sure that NOTHING ever goes wrong. There is always a line of people just waiting to sue that feel the only world is a perfect one.
So, are you saying that the automobile manufacturers should stop producing automobiles? 30,000 die every year in automobile collisions and no one cares.
Congoman, you state that an article warning people about listeria in melons is considered not "news". i'd wager, that you'd regard this as breaking news had someone in your family bought and consumed listeria infected melon and is now experiencing the lethal symptoms of this bacteria. belittling this bit of news and the lives that are already affected and claimed is truly a informative of your character.
I wash ALL my produce "before I eat it" and comparing autos to canteloupes is nothing short of asinine. Our regulations are getting more lax by the "death of a thousand cuts" but of course the only thing that NEVER gets cut is all those tax breaks and loopholes for the mega billionaire corporations like Wal-Mart who pay their employees crap but get away with "murder" while the brat kids who inherited Daddy's business get filthy richer every year.
BP was just "crying" when the whole Gulf was wrecked, thousands of marine life, birds and the marshes and beaches were befouled by oil and STILL are, not to mention how many people are SICK from all of it who will likely never see their claims settled and the 11 oil workers who DIED when that rig went down. Yeah, BP is just HEARTBROKEN and who is paying for that mess-WE ARE and it's BILLIONS of dollars and will continue to be a mess for years to come. Look at what happened to Valdez and that was nothing compared to the Gulf disaster and of course no talk of it NOW as we'reiundated 24/7 with ads telling us how GREAT and wonderful the oil, gas and coal industry is!!!!
MSNBC amkes me SICK with all the Exxon-Mobil commercials on TV and on the internet but go to an independent media site or TV station and they'll tell you the truth about what the aftermath of the Gulf is while we hear nothing from the biggies here. Meanwhile the wingnuts are whining about Solyndra and their 500 million-ARGH!!!
The GOP/Tea Party is hellbent on telling the world how THE FREE AND UNREGULATED MARKET solves all ills... in spite of overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
The EPA requires funding to perform tests on irrigation water used to farm to make sure that the level of bad bacteria is low enough not to make it into the food supply. The GOP/Tea Party demands the end of the EPA, cutbacks to the EPA budget, and removal of regulation that would save your life.
If we test much more we will be forced to close the US because there isn't enough money in the world to protect liberals.
If you owned a business you might have some understanding of how very difficult it is to produce in a perfect world. Stuff happens. Mistakes happen, and often enough people get sloppy. Sometimes, it is nobody's fault at all. Imagine that.
My sympathies to all including the company that I am sure did not intentionally mean to harm anybody and I am sure feel as bad as any normal person would. Contrary to liberals, corporations, companies are made up of good caring people. I know the liberals believe all businesses are evil and need constant government supervision, but many of us have faith that most people are trying to do good.
GOP/Tea Party want to deregulate or unregulate everythings from Banking systems to EPA, FDA, I mean everythings and say we just put our trust and faith into Corporate America. Because they're job creators. Soon maybe they may compete with China which country make more poison food etc.
Yes! they worry about our nation debt so much, they're affraid of their childrens grow up poor so cut everything and just hope their childrens grow up into better world. Beat me!
Michael, do youself a favor go look for a word Monsanto or better watch Food Inc. calling other people different view of you name like Communist, Socialists etc. we're half Capitalism & half Socialist. Ask yourself unemployment benefits, SS and medical etc. Is that Socialist or not. Stop acting like a fool or worst a sheep to slaughter house.
this administration is contaminated and the news media keeps covering up and making up lies to keep this clown in office.when we had a food scare under the real president , mr bush the news media beat him up every day and said his dept of agriculture was just incompetent, lets hear it now NBC AND CNN.you phonies commies!!!!!!!
Human natures are greed, unless there's something check and balance, how much Eron charged California for energy in 2000. I remember rolling blackout. People are greed and power hungry that's in our DNA.
Where are the teabaggers who were screaming to do away with the "big govenment" regulation such as the FDA? Where did all they go? Perhaps they are all busy, maybe looking for answers from the "big govenment" FDA about why their food is killing them.
The fault of this is not on the government but on the providers of this fruit. Regulation is needed to babysit people who should have their own processes in the first place to reduce the risk of this problem. Blame it on government if you may, but I blame Jensen Farms. Stop the political jabs and blame the source.
3,000 deaths a year from tainted food? That's very bad. That is about the same as deaths from automobile collisions. (There is no such thing as an automobile accident. There is always a cause. Usually, human failure.) Your chances of dieing from tainted food is greater than being murdered, and there is a lot of those.
I wonder who is working these farms, Jobs Americans won't do, Going to the bathroom right there in the fields, just like the Lettuce fields, Spinach fields, etc. Very seldom event before free trade. Bring back strict regulation, deduct this expense at the stock market. Mainly check workers for work visa or citizenship, also health cards for anyone in the food industry. Quality=Quality Products
Since we are planning to layoff all those darned Federal government parasites that identify problems like this and develop cures for them we should have nothing to worry about in the future.
Problems like this are, obviously, very serious and they are recurring problems, and to a large degree inevitable, they highlight the need for qualified food inspectors and medical researchers at the CDC and NIH.
The FDA is doing a great job. I suggest that we keep funding this highly competent federal agency. Just look at their clear, grammatically correct statement as evidence of their incredible knowledge and skill.
Can someone send some cantaloupe to sarah palin, rick perry, dick cheney and lets not forget rand paul. From now on the only fruit to be served at all republican gathering needs to be cantaloupe.
These germs are only doing what God created them for and that's growing and producing more of themselves.
Too bad humans are susceptible to so many things out there.
Meh, that's life. It's a struggle against all odds, yet somehow it works. You can complain about how tough and deadly life is, but complaining doesn't seem to fix the problem very often.
Accept that you will have trials and tribulations, and deal with them the best you can as they come at you.
Natural selection can be brutal...
Too bad so much good food gets wasted every year because people are too lazy to wash or cook their food PROPERLY
This is a wonderful opportunity for BigPharma to introduce a listeria vaccine!
Yeah, good thing we have vaccines for bacteria. (sarcasm)
(honestypolicy) not if michelle bachman could help it. she's like white on rice with "required" vaccinations.
Why is it that every topic on "health" somehow becomes an anti-pharma rally? First, BigPharma does not produce vaccines, that is the BIOTECH industry. Second, vaccines are typically produced to provide immunity from virus, not bacteria. A new rule should be applied to these fruits - you can't elope with cantaloupe!
But on a more serious note, my prayers go out to all the victims of this outbreak.
"Listeria monocytogenes is ubiquitous in the environment"
So I find it weird they can pin it on a single producer.
There's a difference between a bacteria being common, and having an outbreak of said bacteria.
In June Republicans cut funding to the FDA
the Republicans think we don't need to inspect our food , just gets in the way of profits
the Republicans are heartless cruel people, who care not for the Middle Class, OLD, or Poor
ooooh - evil, scary Rebublicans that don't actually eat food so they don't care if it is poisonous.
To be fair, neither the super wealthy Republicans nor the super wealthy Deomocrats eat the same food we do.
Having said that.... my sister and brother-in-law are pretty wealthy and she does her own shopping at Wal Mart Super Center. In summer she grows her own vegetables.
Just saying.....
Why don't you socialists move to North Korea? (I am not a Republican.)
Why don't all you people who support less government food inspectors move to Mexico ... I hear the drug cartels are looking for more mules.

How do we know where the canteloupe came from?
If you can't trust the government you create, you have more problems than you know.
That sounds like something one of the founding fathers might have said. They were much wiser than Obama.
President Obama has proven to be a much wiser President than each and every Republican President that has espoused instituting Supply-Side Economics into the American National economic policy.

Yawn!!! Get some "new material" from Karl Rove you trolls. This stuff is so old.
Why are the grocery stores that received the tainted foods listed so the public can find out if they might have been exposed ?
Money.
Correction: AREN'T is the word I meant instead of "are"

Is Charentais Melon considerd as a possible "Contaminated Canteloupe"? They are simillar...
Also, if one has resently eaten Charentais Melon, and considering the incubation period to be as long as two months, should we get tested?

Didn't Def Leppard sing Listeria?
You know, Listeria when you're near. do do do dooo do do , dooo do do, dooo do do
No, they sang the doo doo song.
Anyone wonder why all of our food is contaminated? Is anything safe? Who is inspecting anything......
