Most of the trauma centers that closed were overwhelmed by financial problems from a combination of treating many uninsured patients who couldn't pay, and having to maintain high-level, life-saving capabilities on round-the-clock alert.
If Obamas illegals weren't using them for the neighborhood clinic, they might be able to afford to stay open. Unemployment is better than taking a lower wage, no trauma center is better than a part-time center, if the illegals can't have free medical, no one gets any medical.
Can't say this is a surprise. It's simple math, unfortunately. Trauma care is very expensive, a large proportion of the trauma population are those who have no insurance and no means to pay, and they are also more likely to sue. The simple fact is that as America becomes poorer as a nation, we may have to accept this as the new normal. A hospital can only absorb so many uninsured gun shot victims who leave with $500k in medical bills that no one will pay.
Yeah, our local is a 'Band-Aid' hospital. We would have to be helicoptered to the nearest trauma center. :( They seem to be in areas where there is a high rate of crime...lots of practice. Oh, the irony.
Where I live we have a Hospital Emergency room. Years ago it was up scaled to a Trauma Center. 2 Years later it was reduced back to Hospital Emergency room service.
We had the Equipment, but couldn't retain the qualified Medical Personnel to keep the Trauma Center Label. There is & has been a shortage of Doctors for some time & larger Cities have more to offer Medical Specialists with the Big city Amenities & higher fees. This Article/study doesn't provide this Information or these details.
All our Doctors are full up. They do not except new patients. If you don't have a family Doctor, your options are the Emergency room. If you want to try to obtain a family doctor, it usually requires trips of about 80 miles to another city & months of inquiring to find 1 who is accepting new patients.
We recently had a new Doctor come to town, but another was retiring. He also didn't accept new patients. He was handed a full practice from the 1 who retired.
Bull @!$%# -- The hospitals, insurance, and the air ambulance people all have a little "deal" worked out to where EVERYONE profits very well when a patient gets moved around when the first and smaller hospital was perfectly capable of providing the necessary care ... if they wanted to fore-go the kick-backs. I've seen it too many times in several Texas markets, first and second hand.

Not sure what nibor is talking about though.
Things aren't always as they appear.
