Ah the smell of a capitalist free market in the morning.
What really creates this situation is the devils deal that we make with pharmacuetical companies to research new drugs. The monopolies that we give them to "incentivize" R & D creates this completely un capitalist free market result.
The companies acting as intermediaries are simply doing what any market would do when there is a scarcity.
Remember, a capitalistic market is not inherently moral. It decides how scarce resources are allocated, not whether a person is deserving or should be able to afford it.
Why are small companies being targeted while big pharma distracts attention from the real reason for these drug shortages? Manufacturers do not make money on these life saving drugs so they stop producing them. But they know full well that people will die if they do not manufacture them. It is a business decision they make to make stop manufacturing these life saving drugs at the expense of sick ones lives in order to improve their bottom line. Add Premier GPO to the problem, as they have been the driving force behind the lobbyist attempt to distract politicians from the real problem. Greed, pure and simple by big corporations. It is time to hold these politicians that gain so much from the Pharmaceutical Industry, and the Billion dollar companies that they are driven by.
The reason why manufacturers don't make money is largely because it is more profitable to produce a newer version of that drug which then is given an exclusive monopoly then to sell older drugs.
As for moral decisions the west long ago decided that economic activity should be as ruthless and amoral as a shark. We are merely reaping what we have sown.
