Chie, that's absolute bs on your part. They just had a food scare in Spain and Germany a couple of months ago from sprouts. I was studying in Germany, and I couldn't even buy cucumbers for a couple of weeks.
Though the problems may not be as frequent, your food supply isn't the safest in the world either.
The thing I don't get though is that these things always end up being traced back to the macro-farms , but yet, they're trying to say that it's the local farmers' markets that are the ones unsafe. This is corporatism at its finest, yet the cronies in Washington continue to defend them.

There already are regulations to prevent listeria in cantalope. If the gov is too incompetent to inforce existing regulations, what good would more do?
Actually, that program went unfunded since early 2011 due to obstructionist republicans in congress. Yes, we have enough regulation to prevent this sort of thing if the government were allowed to enforce the existing regulations, but that is what the fight is about, existing regulations, not new regulations. Try to pay better attention to what's going on around you... it might just save you from listeria if nothing else.
I've got an idea- fund the program, hire more inspectors, and inspect more food, foreign and domestic. Charge importers for their inspections, get income tax from the newly hired, and have less problems with food poisoning! (yeah, I know, it makes too much sense)
Don't blame the other guy. Remember the oil spill in the Gulf? No one inspected and when they did, just let things slide. Remember the tainted beef...................inspected and ignored.
Our government hires thousands of "inspectors." They never inspect.

The reason more of these cases are coming to light...is the reporting. There's a time lag. Medical exams need to be done on people on these folks where causeof death is not certain.
I asked the same thing why do people keep on eating this fruit, I guess their is people who can't live without this friut, They should try to eat another fruit, and let manufactures use this fruit to make shampoos and soaps instead of eating it
The incubation period can be up to two months, so people can be getting sick now from something they ate several weeks ago. Until this newest recall, they felt they had all the infected produce off the shelves.

some initial findings is that it happened at the cleaning facility and has to do with the washing system, not the fields. So it has nothing to do with the illegal aliens. Nice try.

Whichever states have sold that kind of fruit from that brand should offer Antibiotics and diet consultation to the consumers for the possible listeria infection.
Instruction should give how to take antibiotics and the importance to complete the course.
Am I alone in recalling that when the outbreak became public that there was an adjacent field, unrelated to the cantaloupe farmers, that had been heavily layered with waste water residue? In other words, human feces?
70% alcohol should kill listeria.
Washing down your cantaloupe with Everclear® or even Bacardi® 151 should kill anything living on the outside of your melon so your knife won't contaminate the inner fruit!
Isopropyl alcohol should also work, but even though its relatively non-toxic I wouldn't won't to ingest it.

If I recall correctly the first reported incidents involved the purchase of presliced cantaloupes.
And how does that focus the attention on the exterior of the fruit? We are looking at a melon that by it's very nature is water based. The absorption of deep or longitudinal delivery gives credence to the fruit being the issue.
The outside texture of a cantaloupe makes it very hard to clean.

Today, he issued one of his Communist fits of lies saying he knew nothing about it, when he has been receiving information about it for over a year, and the M --- S --- N --- B --- C has not one word about Eric Holder anywhere on the site. I am still worried I could get sick. Coming home from vacation we bought cantaloupe in Rocky Ford, Co like we do every year. I came home and the next day ate cantaloupe before I went to work. That morning when I got off the announcement was on the internet. I managed to call my elderly parents before they ate their cantaloupe thank heavens but I still have to worry about illness. Sounds like they didn't announce it for a couple of weeks after the discovery. Could have saved lives if we all knew sooner. I wouldn't have bought any this year. Guess that was the reason for waiting to tell the public.
I went on vacation in Colorado. Coming home we stopped at Rocky Ford as we do every year. Came home and ate cantaloupe, went to work, got off work and when I got on the internet the first thing I saw was the warning about RF cantaloupe listeria. Was able to notify elderly parents before they cut into their cantaloupe and we thru them all away... I still have to to worry about getting sick or even death. Took them at least 2 weeks to alert the public for fear cantaloupes would not be sold and it was the peak of the season which would hurt the fruit stands etc. They were right, I wouldn't have bought them. How many lives could be saved from death and sickness if they would have alerted the Public sooner?
Well I don't eat cantaloupe but my man does. I wouldn't trust any cantaloupe from any farms right now till it's all cleard up. Why do people even take such risky chance's for anyhow? I'll never understand why some people can be so ignorant when it comes to @!$%# like this. You'd think that people would be a little more concerned about their life then eating something that could possibly be contamated. I mean, Come on people. people didn't KNOW the cantalopes were tainted. that's why they bought them. and supposedly the cantalopes were only shipped to a few states. now they say the majority?

however, this push to eat healthy? at the same time, the government is closing down organic and raw food companies. RAIDING them in fact, in full battle gear! we have a judge who said people don't have the right to eat what they want and told a group that they can't drink milk from their own cows because they boarded them on a farm (like people do with horses, right?) and that makes it a dairy farm. all these food illness outbreaks are definitely suspicious. especially along with chem trail airplanes (yeah, there is a public law allowing it) that spray us with deadly chemicals approved by the government, and organic farmers being legally stopped from harvesting and planting their own seeds. they have to buy...and most have been found to be gmo seeds NOT organic. our government has certainly taken away our freedoms haven't they? but people are too stupid to realize and say "conspiracy theorists! conspiracy theorists!" even with all the evidence showing it is all true.
I'm sorry, but headlines like "21 dead, 109 sick as cantaloupe outbreak expands" sound ridiculous. It's not an outbreak of cantaloupes, it's an outbreak of contamination in cantaloupes.
An interesting observation to think about is that there have been significantly more outbreaks of listeria in meat and dairy then in plants. This informative non-commercial, science based website expands on the topic of where listeria occurs if anyone is interested in learning more.
This cantaloupe event may have been an accident but it should be a lesson on how vulnerable our food supply is to sabotage.
It's terrible that so many people have died from this outbreak. Where was the FDA on this one? Under the 2011 Food Safety and Modernization Act they were granted the funding and regulatory power to act preventatively, instead, they ordered a recall 48 days after the first person fell ill.
They've used their funding to attack dietary supplements and anything else that will help big pharma profit. For example, only 2% of our imported food was actually inspected.
I'll stick to shopping local, buying from local farmers. Government and big business hate it, but the small guys are doing a terrific job of providing great, safe products for us.
