The overall numbers are declining, for the reasons explained above, but the numbers of drug-resistant cases are growing. Don't expect the dead body counters safe in their offices in Geneva to solve this.
Its a matter of tomato tamato. Either way they word it TB is back and its mad. Not going to stop until we shut our borders to ill infected people. Sounds harsh but I have a right to be free of disease in my own country. If we feel bad medicate them before letting them come. Stop giving 3rd world countries money if they won't take care of the problem. I have cared for many people and if they showed up with TB they were immediatley sent to a special unit designed to not allow the TB to pass their thresh hold. Get tested yearly your doc can do it and if your around someone coughing etc wear a mask.
The major decrease is due to China resolving their HIV problems, due to they poor medical practices. This resulted in hundreds of thousands of Chinese becoming infected with HIV, during the late 1990's. TB is what ultimately kills the majority of HIV infected people...
The number one killer in China is now enviromental related cancers...
As #1 stated the DR-TB is the thing to worry about...
In the EU up to 80% of the IDU's are infected with HIV and in Asia the numbers are close to 50%. These are the modern culture typhoid Mary's that are spreading the HIV & TB...
Its not just China a lot of TB infections are coming in from Haiti etc. And as I have stated before we are lax in making sure that those people who are infected are kept away from the uninfected. This is where we have problems because we the people have given folks THE RIGHT to not only not do as they should but infect me and you. Its morphing because there is no longer any accountability. Health Dept can't go hold their hand and by the time they do something its too late. Blame the CDC. Just like people wonder why hospital infections are up. CDC said you didn't have to isolate ie.. bio hazard and bag it unless you can "squeeze" the dressing and fluid comes out. So all of our icky nasty stuff is being gone through in a land fill by some unsuspecting picker.
Why has there been so little or no publicity about the TB epidemic which has spread to 148 people in Ennis, Texas, right now? It started with a teacher which had TB and spread rapidly to a number of students, then to students' families, etc.
A case appeared at the University of North Texas, at Denton, Texas, and has spread to more persons there.
Why are we besieged with crap about a questionable Vitamin E study, and no mention of what has been happening in Ennis, and which appears to spread rapidly?
I had thought TB was virtually a thing of the past in the U.S.
TB is raging still because we have become lax in our prevention and treatment. TB also has an incubation period droplets that were left hrs ago will still infect. I hope the school shuts down and gets a good cleaning air ducts and all. They have also gotten away from testing everyone who has had contact with an individual to just testing those in close contact. And they widen the circle if someones positive. Go get tested.
I can tell you why. Because our nation allows TB infected individuals in. They call it being humanitarian. They also no longer place the infected person in isolation. Also you have the rights of the patient who trump you and your health. They also trust that the person will take their meds and wear masks when around others. And I am sure that the numbers aren't correct as you say there are people who are infected right now. TB is aquired through the release of sputum etc. I would wear a mask aroung anyone who is infected as well as feed them on seperate silverware etc. Glove up while cleaning up tissues etc. People are so concerned about the patients feeling they forget theres others out there. When in doubt mask up.
