As a medical professional (not an MD) I find that there are so many articles about health that say tests are not necessary and pts are having problems due to tests, etc. Hopefully every patient who undergoes a biopsy gets antibiotics prior to, the day of and the day after the biopsy to prevent infections. There is always a slim percent of patients that unfortunately will have problems. And yes, it is unfortunate and tragic when the patients mentioned had serious problems. But unlike ANY type of test, there are risks. Bruising from getting your PSA drawn is a risk...
I would rather be safe than sorry and have the biopsy, although uncomfortable, than NOT and find out later that "wow, you have cancer all over!, didnt you get a PSA drawn?"
Anyway, I hope you do get a PSA because its an easy first line of evaluation for prostate cancer. Good luck out there.
It was elevated, so I had two biopsy's done...about 2 weeks apart, and on the last test, one of the needles indicated positive. Had the prostate removed, and have been clear ever since, and that was 15 yrs ago.
Get a physical every year, and make sure that the PSA test is included with the regular workup during the normal blood draw. It's not expensive, all things considered...
Wait, who are the chaps on this pannel? Sounds like Obamacare is running. I had a PAS test, biopsy, 42 radiation treatments and the last 10 months of PSA tests show >0.01. I feel somewhat normal, without any side effects. HAD I DONE NOTHING, MOST LIKELY I WOULD BE DEAD. PLEASE EXPOSE THIS PANEL OF EXPERTS.
in addition, my psa doubled in one year from 4.8 nto 10 and was outside of the prostate gland, therefore, surgery was out of the question. this is all bunk and it's making no sense. how can a simple blood test cause you to be at risk?
Once again, men are thown under the bus by a society driven to misandry by rabid women's activist groups. While most hospitals have entire wings, floors and buildings devoted entirely to women's health, no hospital or social services system has a men's health program of any kind. Now, the latest casualty is detection of prostate cancer. For over a century, US culture has made it the man's role to buy life insurance, work himself to death paying for everything, die early and simple become a funding source for women and children survivors. This is just another example how our society just throws men away because the are as necessary as a bicycle is to a fish.
PSA test saved my life, had a biopsy, found cancer in the middle stage allready had surgery, cancer free. This article is bull!!!
Saved my Dad's life too.
PSA caught my dad's cancer.
the psa test showed my brothers prostate cancer at 45, he is now 58 and still cancer free.
