Are all you people this ignorant? This is a result of food remanufacturing, a drug for every gripe and greed by drug companies. If all of you are this stupid, all the education in the world (and there is plenty of good info on how to be healthy) won't help anyone!! Sad.
Taking a kid to the ER for a non-emergency psychiatric problem is a clear indication of what is driving up health care costs. ER visits cost far more than a doctors office visit. Those without insurance do not want to wait for an office appointment to see a doctor that will take them on medicaid so they abuse the system and go to the ER for what is really routine, non-emergency medical care. This swamps ERs, delays real emergency patients from getting treatment, and drives costs through the roof. People who think that Obamacare or socialized medicine will fix this problem are kidding themselves. Talk to anyone who lives in a country with socialized medicine and they will tell you that it can take months to get an appointment with a specialist. ERs need to be allowed to turn away people who come in with non-emergency conditions instead of being forced to treat them. Someone who comes to the ER because they have a case of the flu costs the health care system a fortune compared to what a doctors office or clinic visit would cost for the same visit.
It's not just kids with parents are abusing this system but everyone else. Why wait for an appointment when you can just go to the ER. They even refuse to go to the local clinic because ER does not require payment up front and they are open 24/7. And when they do go to the ER, they complain why the wait is so long...
You don't seem to know much about socialized medicine(Universal healthcare). It provides access for everyone and for those who want more or are rich they can pay for private insurance and get whatever they want. I have lived in a country with socialized healthcare and it was better than here in America. I was seen right away by any type of doctor and the wait times weren't any longer than here, and their ERs actually function as ERs without the 9 hour wait times. Next time write what you know about.
A stupid nurse began chastising me once for going to the ER with a cold. But it wasn't a cold and I would up on a stretcher surrounded by concerned medical staff.
People don't alwasys know or understand what's wrong with them or feel, as I did that something was very wrong but don't know what's wrong.
And 300,000 people a year die from the flu. Don't tell people not to go to the ER if they have the flu.
The real picture being missed in this article is that kids can't be kids anymore with all of 'the rules'...make a mistake and there is something seriously wrong with you!
Health Insurance covers less and less for non hospitalized psychiatric care. This means families must either pay out of pocket (if they can) or wait until its severe enough to warrant hospitalization so insurance will pick up 50%, provided they have not reached their maximum life time cap, which is normally low. Many insurance plans covers nothing at all, ever.
It's simplistic to blame parenting for mental illness in children, actually, its medieval and illustrates an amazing lack of comprehension or compassion. Until you have had a child with real mental illness, keep quiet and be thankful. Mental illness is not something one causes by negligence or bad parenting.
As a young person (21) who has had depression, anxiety and eating disorder problems (amongst other things) for many years, leading to, yes, a suicide attempt at 17 that landed me in the hospital I will say two things about the bad parenting part. The answer is yes, and no. Yes, some aspects of my parents parenting were not ideal FOR ME. They might have worked for another person, but not for me. But, that was definitely not the only reason for the problems. Some, I'm sure, was genetics, as depression is at least a third and I think fourth generation thing on my dad's side. While in the hospital with other teens like me, I definitely observed that parenting issues were present in all of our cases, not that our parents were bad, but that the things they were doing just weren't working. Although, one of the girls had been physically and sexually abused by her father, so that definitely was BAD. Anyways...like everything, it's a complicated answer, and each person is different. Would things have been different if my parents had done things differently? Perhaps, but we'll never know. I will definitely do some things differently if I have children, but in the end, I do not really fault them.
MusicGirl, ask anyone under age 45 or so if their parents messed up, and 9 out of 10 will recite a litany of woes.
Part of your job in growing up is to learn to deal with difficult people and situations. It's not your parents' responsibility to figure out what might work for you and change their personalities accordingly. It's your responsibility to learn to deal with the lifestyle your parents provide. They are the adults, and they define the family. (Assuming that abuse is not an issue.)
The problem is that parents are no longer allowed to parent, even if they know how. I can't imagine why anyone would be willing to have a child in the U.S. these days.
I find it kind of bizarre, with the advent of 'mental illness' and major drug company's becoming a viable institution on this planet, that the more popular their industry of labels, - calling someone sick, and then giving the correct drug to induce the correct response gains more foothold as a viable answer. A magic feel good pill, when society and the major forces on this planet are corrupt with egotistical agendas of greatness and control and the overly sensitive are in tune with the negativity even though they are 'mentally unaware' of it, I feel, is the underlying issue which needs to be looked at. Not more drugs and more labels.
Yeah...there was a scandal with TeenScreen. A girl who took it said "she helped out with chores"...and got labeleb OCD. She also answered that she "doesn't party much"...and got labeled with Antisocial Personality Disorder. She came home in tears, and her parents sued the school. I think her name was Chelsea Rhodes.
It is amazing to me the number of posts that seem to imply that there is really no mental illness and good parenting or counseling or just get over it is the answer to this issue.
In response to Roberta, most antidepressants are $4 per month and for bipolar lamictal is $15 cash at Costco. Zyprexa and Seroquel will soon be generic. Risperdal is also cheap. So I do not see the major drug manufacturers dumping money into an area that is all going generic.
This again points to the extreme need for Universal Health care, the model that works for every other civilized western nation. It does not limit access to healthcare like our current system of for profits do. And the rich can always pay more for private insurance if they want it. And it's not socialism it is smart and compassionate and it saves money to have a healthy population instead of an extremely sick one like we have here in America. The short-sightedness of America is astounding and shocking. Wake up!
I wonder how many of these children were NOT given talk therapy as a first option, but just shipped onto the psych ward and medicated on whothehellknowswhat.
Its not the kids that need to go to ER, it was their grandparents that failed to take care of their kids. So we yet another generation of this.
Sheesh, this stuff get old, there are stupid people out there, but Obama Health care will solve all of this - not.

Nothing wrong that good parenting wouldn't stop. Say parenting from the early 1900's.

Another book recommendation: The Truth About the Drug Companies - by Marcia Angell
