The idea that one teenager in twenty-five is experiencing clinical depression is, in itself, a major medical problem. Medication is just a Band-Aid for the symptoms. Those afflicted who are not on perscribed medication will tend to self-medicate with alcohol or illegal drugs.
We need research to understand why clinical depression is so pervasive in this age group.
hmm could it be that teenagers are immature, mean, concerned with their own self image and social status, and NOW they have tools to spread their bullying or whathave you all over the internet reaching thousands of audience members? Yeah Social Networking, you did such a great thing for our younger generations...

Of course, this assumes they really ARE experiencing clinical depression, and not just a case of the blues. Teens are, by their nature (and their hormone fluctuations, etc.), moody folks. I know people (adults) who have been prescribed antidepressants as coping mechanisms when they don't like their jobs. It seems the mundane and often strife-filled nature of our existence has been redefined as "clinical depression," a physical, medical condition which must be medicated. (I know there are some who will read this and reprimand me for ignoring the "very real medical disease" of clinical depression. I'm still on the fence about whether or not such an organic "medical disease" exists...but that is not the point of my comment here. My comment has to do with the appropriateness of medication for the common disappointments that are inherent to the human experience, and the attendant side effects - not to mention economic effects - of such over-medication.)
Mundane has nothing to do with clinical depression. Nothing at all.
Of course, when one tries to correlate prescriptions (which are written the most in emergency rooms/primary care settings btw, no mental health training) with any sort of clinical depression prevalence, then compare that faux correlation with actual prevalence of clinical depression... the picture started fuzzy and ends up incoherent.
It's scary to think that many kids are being medicated. Could more regular conversations between doctors and parents about alternative treatments help? Or perhaps a reduction in time spent on electronics and more time playing outside? Either way, I'd want to know what the long-term costs associated with kids on meds were.
Yeah, I also noticed the "And maybe more should"...NO more kids should not be taking medications..this country has become a nation of pill poppers.
And not all teenagers are for this..I've answered countless questions on Yahoo Answers that say:
"My parents are taking me to a psychiatrist, help!"
"Parents forcing me to take medication to control my moods"
"I'm being forced to take psychological medicine"
I have answered questions like these, and EVERY time, I advise the person (who clearly does NOT want to take the meds) to secretly spit them out and trash them.
I am a disabled veteran with psych and physical ailments from my military accomplishments between 1990-1993 I was on 7 psych medications and chose to stop taking them over a year ago. I have a service dog (MARLEY) she helps with my anxiety levels but without me using "Black-market" marijuana its harder for me to control, without marijuana the ARTHRITIS in my back would be more painful. I have a young friend of mine who is diagnosed with MS (multiple sclerosis) he too benefits from the effects. I say to you the readers KNOW-THE-FACTS.....If it's legalized it too would stimulate the economy by shutting down unneeded prisons and government spending on prison guards , low-level law officials and programs like" NARK" and "DARE" that eat at local community budgets. These are local programs formed by the government under the "war on Drugs" with money bribes to your local politicians to line their pockets why do you think we all want to know now "WHERE DID THE MONEY GO ?" The budgets are done every year the money is hidden in programs!!! End these programs and it will put money back intoSocial Security, Healthcare and welfare where the money was pulled from.Try sleeping at night knowing the country i was injured protecting is the same country I'm now fighting to legalize an" alleviation" from my symptoms. (P.T.S.D., bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and arthritis)
How well do we remember giving IRAQ "GRANT" money instead of loans to rebuild ?
I dont promote or demote political parties but as an average american whos paid his dues and the increase in SSDI is a joke compared to the gas$ increases over the past 3 years and because of the state's "Pain Medication Regulation" I now have to drive to my doctors once-a-month instead of every 3 months we are creating laws that keep the LOW-income - LOW-income !!
Clinical depression must be treated with medication and therapy helps, once the patient is stablised to undue the damage the depression has caused in thinking and emotions.
It can be genetic. It can be cause by injury. It can be cause by life events. The chemicals in the brain change. Neourotransmiters disconnect.
I would venture to say that there's an increase in adolescents due to value systems, what happens in schoold and the way they're raised.
When parents think their children are perfect and the child finds in the real world everyone doesn't think they're perfect, it's traumatic not to mention no one sees them for who they really are at home.
The intense bullying and/or social atmosphere is detrimentally intense. Technology plays a role.
That's just a few exeamples. Prolonged dispondancy can make physiological changes in the brain.
Wow, so many people drugged up in our society and they think more should be? How about talk away all the electronic garbage and the expectations that they have to be to be perfect, thin, talanted and let them be kids. Teach them respect, personal accountability, manners, and celebrate the person that they are. No pill can replace that.
Big Pharma companies would love to convince everyone that they need drugs to fit the image of normal.
In the liberal "there's a pill for that" world, is this really a surprise?
I believe you meant con world where pharma corp is god.
