Clearly, Rhode Islanders either aren't very serious about suicide, or they are very incompetent killers. From other crime statistics, I think we can discount the latter. So it must be that Rhode Islanders are just drama queens.

There are multiple problems one finds in a capitalistic nation which many citizens have to face. Money is a major problem with the lack of it. Today's wannadiecitizen has lost hope in alternatives.

There is protocol for avoding suicide but is it the only answer to the feelings of suicide?

JohnCarter & lisa, Clearly Rhode Islanders banned together to find a way to make national news, that is an entirely logical statement to make and then blindly agree with.

If any of the above three don't understand where my comments come from...then look at your own profiles and realize the rest of the world can see every opinion you ever had on this website. Jeff, even as a Rhode Islander, I agree this does appear to be the ironic news story of the day.

Rhode Island is, and always has been in a unique position, in that it is one of the most influential birthplaces of our modern society, yet is disregarded by most as to having any influence on anything. Detroit is fawned over in its economic despair and how it was once the booming city of the auto industry, but without Pawtucket and Slater Mill, Detroit wouldn't have ever risen as a center for industry. Without, so many of things in Rhode Island's history things in this country would be vastly different. A state that is the size of an average county in the rest of the country is the birthplace of the industrial revolution, and the modern game of basketball. Don't believe me? Two names, Samuel Slater and Frank Keaney. Google those names, and learn something.

At the same time back off the bashing of the state. Just because we're the smallest kid in the school doesn't mean we can't fight back.

In typical Rhode Island fashion, we are always good at getting things started, but always seem to fall short on completion.

Bridge renovation; good start, not able to complete

Road reconstruction; good start, not able to complete

Car tax phase outs; good start, not able to complete

Tax breaks to bring in and keep big business for increased jobs; good start, not able to complete

Sales tax reduction to compete with MA; ; good start, not able to complete

Being the leading state in suicides; good start, not able to complete

So, either the citizens of Rhode Island are just putting on a show and down really mean to commit suicide or they are just incompetent in the matter. Even with their 2nd Amendment rights seriously restricted, it would not prevent someone with even minimal mechanical ability from creating a single shot shotgun from steel pipe that can be found at any plumbing supply or home improvement store. Even without that, surely Rhode Island has some tall buildings or bridges that someone can jump from, right? If you can't manage to kill yourself, either you are not really wanting to do it or you are just too stupid to be able to accomplish it. Considering the fact that we're talking about Yankees here, it's probably a combination of the two...

So RI residents just can't get the job done. Are they lacking good ideas on how to do it right the first time or are they lazy? I don't know what's worse. Wanting to kill yourself and failing during the attempt or knowing you just can't do anything right the first.

People will usually send out various signals that they may commit suicide. If you hear someone speak of killing or harming themselves, listen and get professional help for them. People who talk about it are crying for help, others who are serious, just do it.

Teenagers have the highest rates, listen to them and report those conversations to parents, teachers or the police.

Of the 81+gun deaths per day in the USA. Over 50% are white males committing suicide...

If you are a failure at everything else in life, at least learn how to commit suicide effectively...

With the numbers of people who are on antidepressants here it is no wonder they are killing themselves. Have you ever read the label on some of this crap?(suicide seems to be the main side effect of most of them and/or depression) Doctors pass it out to every person who is unhappy about anything . Hasn't anyone heard that life sucks and you have to just do whatever it takes to make it suck a little less and live with the rest of it?

Living here in RI and seeing the numbers of just school kids alone who are on some of this s h i t I would suspect that it will probably get worse.

These suicide attempts are only costing this nation more in medical cost. Someone once told me that if you try and commit suicide and fail, you really did not want to die, I believe this to be true, because there a proven ways to commit suicide that guarantee you will die.

Wow dudes, and it really appears to be all dudes...well to be honest I've been online for 7 years and have NEVER participated in an articles discussion...now I KNOW WHY! However, I am aware of comments I read on other various topics and know it's usually 50/50 of empathy or patheticness, vulgar rude , stupid, insensitive remarks....Now I could give a @!$%# that Rhode Island is the topic in this article, since, by the way, I myself am suffering again from suicidal thoughts since my Mom passed, and I have too, been frigging unemployed now 2 friggin years....here in the heartland, good ol' Wiconsin, just a jump from Illinois where I herald from, with my first suicide thoughts at age 25..As of age 33 , in Wisconsin, during particular scary times finally erupting into my work life...I sought therapy for the first time and have been there now...uh..16 years, once suicidal, most always, it's like any other disease, you are RARELY cured of all the ravenous thoughts and feelings, throughout your life....back in 1945 unbeknownst to me...my dear Grandmother, who as of 1945 as a woman in hearbreak over the loss of her husband...took her life with a gun to the head, and my dear, dear father, had to find her....he later, lost his brother for the same reason...many many moons later after much research I discovered bipolar esp. is inherited, and suicide risk goes up just automatically just for that, let alone all the other @!$%# that can happen in life....

Do I have one point here?? NO, I can never write anything short...I also have OCD.And many creative talents...and you know the makeup of many creative types, artist, musicians often take their lives..... I want to jump back to 2007 when I gave a speech here in Wisconsin for an Out of The Darkness walk, which is sponsored by the AFSP.and I did a great job, because the whole month of August was my worst and most threatening potentil suicide month in my whole life, I was 45 at the time..I have had a great life in regards to even having these debillitating diseases, but I kid you not...If I killed myself...you would have a hard time if you knew me to figure out why, because I am really a HAPPY BITCH who at times, really bad times even, can save face and not bring others down with my problem..

LUCKILY AND THANK GOD..Wisconsin is a darn good state to me for help...But I have heard enough of suicides right here...a few too close....The friggin state you live in I could really give a hoot.you don't get suicidal from just living in Rhode Island...

So, in my speech, with all the stigma and retarded, which means slow, uneducated folks not supporting the need or necessity to feel for mental health issues, and the communities everywhere should get it together to increase their resources and education, because it is no shocker in the news now...that like suicide is a craze among teens...younger and younger! But the truth about it, there is NO particulars whatsoever....

I just NOW WANT TO COMMENT and THROW a LITTLE LEFT PUNCH to the writers of the actual article,,,,,which............to be HONEST..I am MORE APALLED at the stupid, literally dangerous, careless remarks or wording they used, probably not intentionally.. but this should lighten them up..coming from a suicidal candidate...who takes everything pretty seriously, but I do have a good sense of humor so you know..I can be wonderful fun to know..

IN one line they said something I'm not sure I quite read right, but it made my jaw drop.. they said to an upbeat statistic...about no deaths happening much, she said,

IT is not a bad thing that they're not dying...blah, blah, blah...Why does she state it as if she's not really that glad that they're Not dying....just don't comprehend that coming from the professionals,

Number two they said was....guns are the most dangerous...but went on to say compared to other methods....the reason guns are the most accurate is.........It's easy to shoot yourself................WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

For my cause and my life and those who have been through the emotional throws of hell that all leads up to that demise, and I have had those girly attempts like Overdose, Monoxide, and road rage, and practicing my wrists with an exacto...that I can tell you, most people that die from depression and worse, are all very good, loving people that are just overly troubled from everything, and they may want to hold on so bad, and love who they love, and want to do things they used to, and to hopefull get better, and hopefully get the right help...when you are ready to do it, you absolutely are at your worst you can feel, and then comes the 100% hopelessness and no options, and still all that emotional PAIN AND TORTURE THAT YOU CANNOT STAND< THEN YOU HAVE NO OPTION BUT THE OPTION TO FEEL BETTER IS TO ABSOLUTELY ESCAPE THIS LIFE BY ANY MEANS...and if this poor person does NOT HAVE ACCESS OF ANY KIND TO GET HELP WITHOUT FEELING ASHAMED OR JUST NOT KNOWING WHO TO TURN TO>>>>well, I can be certain they will surely kill themselves if not then, very very soon later....

What I am trying to back up is that ASSININE COMMENT..it's easy to shoot yourself...I present this to you all.....Does all that pain sound fun>> and it may have been surfacing for years if not decades inside....TO me, and on behalf of my heartfelt commrades in pain,,,,NOTHING IS EASY>>>AT THAT POINT OF HELPLESSNESS AND AGONY< let alone actually resignation that the ONLY WAY OUT is to PUT A .......
