Seems like Congress would have better things to do like get this country back on the right track. There are several agencies already investigating this. All congress will do is keep these people tied up talking to them, when they could be out there doing their job.
What I was thinking. I think we already employ people for this. Seems like the CEO's of businesses concerning themselves with what brand of staples the company uses.

Carl if you had been following this story the FDA and parties involved have already stated that washing in this case would have ZERO effect. The contaminants had penetrated into the center of the food before it even left the sorting facility.
I agree we don't need CONGRESS sticking their noses into this... grandstanding is all they are pulling at this point. The powers that be had already pinpointed the source before the recent disclosure of the specific machines that were involved.
The result of this "investigation" will NOT include a damning of the fact that replublitards have cut funding to the regulatory agencies. The idiots at the FDA/CDC can only speculate. If they have no real or actual evidence look at the seeds(GMO possibility) used or the chemical sprays or bacteriophage cocktail if anything was sprayed on the plants/melons.
It would be nice if Congress was smart enough to ask the right questions and pursue it to the end, no matter what direction the FDA wants to steer the future control of all our food supply, choice and potential small/family farm destruction.

In doing research on this relatively new problem, Listeria, I am wondering if this isn't one of hundreds of little known created concoctions - GIVEN to the imprisoned at Auschwitz in block 12 - the medical testing facility on human guinea pigs. they created diseases, bacterium etc, then cut open the bones of these prisoners, to see exactly what their new concoction would do, and also to see what drugs they could create to combat such new diseases. Any new disease, in my opinion, is suspect to artificial creation by little boys who only want to rule and/or destroy anyone who will not be their slave.

Listeria spp. creates Listeria spp. Listeria makes more Listeria in animals, things that come out of animals, soil, things that grow in soil, etc. we're on the verge of doing some pretty interesting things these days in the lab, but pretty sure the reich didn't have recombinant gene tech back then.

They are likely seeking to prove that the listeria spontaneously appeared while the lettuce was on the trucks being distributed to prove that we don't need any inspections, i.e, regulation.
Where is the concern about jobs? Hire and train more inspectors so this does not happen.

Actually Robert, this has been going on for a long time. It is a fact of life. It has only been in the last couple of years that the government has made it an issue. You do not even hear about half of the "alerts" going out for produce. I see several every month, but they do not make the news, nor should they. I will give you a clue, though, most of the real problems are in bagged salads.
That's what the huge FDA and CDC budgets are about. I would think members of Congress have more pressing issues than 'double-dipping' into taxpayer dollars to listen to repetitious theories about cantaloupes and listeria.
Congress will do anything to keep from try to solve this country's problem.

Jim, that is it in a nutshell. The issues about food safety in produce have only come up in the last couple of years because of expensive government programs. It is another ploy that we are supposed to buy "for our own good". The same issues were there 30 years ago. There is money behind this fear tactic, and the money belongs to.... ConAgra, would be my guess.

Oh, apparently the best defense against such bacteria as listeria is to WASH YOUR FOOD!! Yes, the producers and processors need to ensure that their facilities are clean, but as an added measure, wash your produce. For God's sake people, this is common sense.
Here is a thought. Until Congress has done their job to complete our country's budget on time, no special investigations. Then again, no more special investigations as all it does is waste their time from doing their real job. These area clueless people without a mission. No country budget on time, your pay stops and back pay is not an option.
