I hope that everyone who fears vaccinations reads this article. In addition to rabies, there are several other diseases that we in the US no longer think about, but which are still scourges in other parts of the world.
DJ if the thought counted you'd have hit a home run. Unfortunately there isn't a vaccine for people to prevent rabies only to fight it once you may be infected. Now getting our mammalian pets vaccinated does work and is an important way to fight the deadly disease.
@trust_verify: DJ was making the point that vaccination programs in the U.S., in general, have essentially eradicated what used to be prevalent, deadly diseases, and people should recognize their importance.
People who deny the efficacy of vaccines, or who wrongly fear its effects based on now-discredited junk science, should read this & understand the downside of ignoring vaccines, whether for pets OR your kids.
The big difference is that in India people probably can't even afford to vaccinate dogs. Here, people are just too stupid to understand scientific studies & refuse to vaccinate their children based on lies & fear mongering...
The subject of the article was about rabies. Bringing in vaccinations into this discussion is stupid because there no such thing as a rabies vaccination.
There is such a thing as a rabies vaccine, and the first type was developed in 1885. Humans who get vaccinated--and vaccination is the treatment for those who've been bitten, scratched, etc., by a rabid animal--have immunity from the disease for 2 to 3 years.
There is a rabies vaccine... Ive gotten it twice. Its easier to vaccinate our pets than to vaccinate all people... People that get vaccinated for rabies are people likely to be exposed.
Um isis, momgrandma wasn't talking about kids being vaccinated against rabies, but vaccinations for all of the other horrible diseases that we vaccinate children against.
Clearly by saying "vaccinating children AS WELL," she's comparing the importance of vaccinating your kids to the importance of vaccinating pets, both against the threat of infectious disease.
She didn't say you should vaccinate your kids against rabies specifically, which as you rightly pointed out, isn't done - just that "regularly scheduled vaccines" are not something to be taken lightly.
This is a reminder of why we have 'regularly scheduled vaccinations' for children as well.
Exactly. There is NO rabies vaccine, this woman is just plain stupid...hate to say it but...come on!
There is a rabies vaccine... It is just given to animals instead of humans... The lady said this is why we have "regularly scheduled vaccinations" for children as well. Meaning on top of vaccinating our pets against diseases that mainly affect pets (and some that can affect us also) we vaccinate our children against the diseases that affect humans (more often than rabies)
They don't give a rabies vaccine to humans, because the way it is transmitted to a human is usually because a pet contracts it. They in turn will expose the human... So, if you stop it before it gets to the pet, your pet wont get it, and neither will you. Unless you didnt get your pet vaccinated, or in the rare event that you were exposed some other way...
Isis, why are you being such a witch? This woman's statement was clear to me, I am sorry you can't comprehend. From looking at your other post everyone is stupid just because they don't believe the same way you do. I know you are atheist, but god bless and have a wonderful day. I hope your misery soon ends and you can smile a little.
They need to study this and develop a libido pill. This sounds like a dream drug.
Trillions to be made,it would spread universal happiness, end all wars and create world peace. We could put it in the water supply, like fluoride.
Big drugs companies---please help us! We want our libido drug. Think of the money you'll make............This is what is wrong with viagra, it makes your equipment function but the quality sucks when you bypass the mental pathways that creates true libido arousal, something most women know nothing about, they think if it is ready it is all good---wrong ---it is the quality of the arousal that matters.
Dogs, as much as we love them, can carry deadly germs, even in relatively sanitary conditions. An old family friend lost her foot to gangrene only a few days after her dog stepped on it, causing a small laceration. Before she noticed, the infection set in and the foot was too damaged to save. It shortened her life by many months if not years.
My husband and I have been arguing for months because I want to get rid of our dog. We have small children and he has been having a lot of accidents inside. Its a pain to clean and its not sanitary for the kids.
I have two dogs and would never think of getting rid of them. If this woman got gangrene it was from something other than a dog stepping on her foot. If your dog is using the restroom in the house I would say you don't need the animal, because apparently you aren't paying enough attention to the dog. They need to be let out about 15 minutes after eating and about every hour.
Bitten by a feral cat two months ago, I sought medical treatment. The rabies series (five shots) cost eight thousand dollars, and was not covered by insurance.
Ive never heard of being charged either... Ive gotten the series 2x (this is when they did it in the stomach, so its been a few years) and I know others that got it also... Never paid a dime...
I have heard of people being charged for it. You guys got lucky. I am wondering who actually paid for your vaccines, because it's VERY expensive. Most people will be charged thousands of dollars. From what I have heard, it is not covered by insurance. Maybe you happened to have a rare insurance that did cover it? Many people who receive bites opt out of the vaccine, because they do not have thousands of dollars. This article should have discussed the fact that the vaccine is thousands of dollars and (most?) insurance doesn't cover it.
I had state insurance once, the other time I had insurance through my work... Wasn't really all that great of insurance, and co pays for everything... Didnt have a copay for that though... Looking at the previous post, maybe it was because I went to a university the 2nd time... The first time it was the local ER...
Also with insurance, remember there is a difference between vaccine as a treatment for being bit, and a vaccine as a preventative(such as getting one before traveling to places where rabies is a problem). Every insurance I've worked with won't cover the latter that I've seen, but they do cover the former. Since they are both called vaccines, if you are denied treatment, make absolutely sure the insurance knows you are talking about treatment for already being bit so that there is no confusion.
Getting rabies and not treating is a near certain death sentence, no insurance wants to deal with that in a court of law. If you are denied, chances are there was a misunderstanding. Make sure you get a supervisor to talk to, as the first level tends to only follow set guidelines.
There is pre-need rabies vaccine available for humans. Usually it is given to people like veterinarians and others who are more likely to come in contact with a rabid animal than most of us. It is also recommended for some people who intend to travel to areas of the world where rabies is a more widely encountered situation.
"Rabies-related human deaths in the U.S. have dropped from 100 a year at the turn of the century to one or two per year in the 1990s, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."
The turn of the century was 11 years ago. The 1990s was before that. How confusing...
Can you really get rabies from being LICKED by a dog, as the article states?? Wow.
Never heard that before - thought it had to break the skin...
Kind of clarifies why many foreign cultures still fear dogs so much & consider them dirty. Something to keep in mind when playing w/that cute stray while on vacation...
You could also potentially be infected through the eye membranes, if the animal is coughing, hissing, etc. Having had to capture a rabid cat once, I can attest to how that scenario is actually more feasible than one would think. And, I might add, it was one of the scariest things I have ever seen. If everyone in the US had to witness the behavior of a rabid animal in the full throes of the disease, compliance with pet vaccination laws would be almost 100%.
need to remember that i walk around at night here in Taiwan and there are stray dogs everywhere, sometimes i give them my left over meals....hmmmm...welll if i get chomped ill hit the doctor with a quickness....good article, thanks
Science will find a way to mimic the virus ability to cause sexual arousal for those who are frigid and this is good. But I would question what happens if a sexual deviant gets ahold of it and causes an uproar by becoming a sexual predator who can't control his urges and seeks rape as an outlet? In other words, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde in the flesh caused by a virus injected into the wrong person.
The same thing often happens to me when I get the flu (which used to be too often). It is the first sign or symptom that I'm becoming ill, about a day earlier than any other sign. I hope that isn't due to brain swelling!
I hope that everyone who fears vaccinations reads this article. In addition to rabies, there are several other diseases that we in the US no longer think about, but which are still scourges in other parts of the world.

My beagle would hump a footstool. I guess he's got rabies.
This is a reminder of why we have 'regularly scheduled vaccinations' for children as well.
Um, WOW. Rabies shots are ONLY if you get infected....kids don't need to be vaccinated first, PETS do.
Um isis, momgrandma wasn't talking about kids being vaccinated against rabies, but vaccinations for all of the other horrible diseases that we vaccinate children against.
umm ug yes she was lumping rabies in with all the other shots.
Exactly. There is NO rabies vaccine, this woman is just plain stupid...hate to say it but...come on!
If there is no rabies vaccine, does that mean the vet is ripping me off every year?
@ trust_verify & Isis:

Well of course there not supposed to be taken lightly? We already know that!
Maybe I should be more clear....there is no human rabies vaccine, but this ladies post could've been a lot more clear.
There is a human rabies vaccine.

Its just easier to give it to animals for the above stated reasons...
Ive had it, because I worked with feral animals...
Isis, why are you being such a witch? This woman's statement was clear to me, I am sorry you can't comprehend. From looking at your other post everyone is stupid just because they don't believe the same way you do. I know you are atheist, but god bless and have a wonderful day. WOW! ... I`ve had rabies for 60 years??? OMG!
you too?
So that`s why they call you Sqrly ... they called me Mad Dog!
Actually, it's my real nickname. I got it in my first few years of piloting a motor vehicle, along with more moving violations than I can remember.
i apparently developed my rabies when i was about 14....it's only gotten worse since then.
Damn it! My wife read the article and wants me tested, too.
Maybe Charlie Sheen should get vaccinated:)
They need to study this and develop a libido pill. This sounds like a dream drug.

Are you talking about your husband having accidents inside the house or the dog?
Either way, they need to be housebroken...unless you're willing to get rid of them both! lol
Simple solution, Train your dog.
I have two dogs and would never think of getting rid of them. If this woman got gangrene it was from something other than a dog stepping on her foot. If your dog is using the restroom in the house I would say you don't need the animal, because apparently you aren't paying enough attention to the dog. Simpler solution: Train your husband.
There must be a lot of men with rabies
women, nymphos, as well?
Bitten by a feral cat two months ago, I sought medical treatment. The rabies series (five shots) cost eight thousand dollars, and was not covered by insurance.
Wish me luck; I saved my money.
If you have one in your area, seek out a University medical center - typically they'll do it for extremely low cost and/or free.
Honestly, I've never heard of anywhere charging for the rabies shots for humans, simply because of how deadly the disease is.
Ive never heard of being charged either... Ive gotten the series 2x (this is when they did it in the stomach, so its been a few years) and I know others that got it also... Never paid a dime...

My dog bite me when I was 12....I didn't got any rabies shot but I masturbated for two weeks straight
I thought you were 12 with the sentence structure.
"Rabies-related human deaths in the U.S. have dropped from 100 a year at the turn of the century to one or two per year in the 1990s, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."
The turn of the century was 11 years ago. The 1990s was before that. How confusing...
I like the way you think.
Just one more reason to contact your doctor if you have an erection that last longer than 4 hours.
I home it doesn't get mixed up with HIV!
This means that, if you are traveling in any of these countries, you must be very careful around dogs there. And, if bitten, see a doctor ASAP.

I think you could if it licked an open wound or something... Though I did find it weird that they said that in the article...

damnit. That means i have had rabies since i was fourteen.
Me thinks that you guys worry too much about mundane things.......
Huh. And here I thought all that foam dripping around her mouth was... oh, never mind.
For anyone who thinks that there is no rabies vaccine... (and especially those that keep spouting over and over again that there isn't any)

Foaming at the mouth can be attributed to rabies and sex as well.
this is really gross! any bite, from a human or animal, needs to get attention immediately.
I think I need to start visiting these third world countries so I can help some of these victims with their "itch".....
