uh...until now, people were free to snort, inject, or smoke or otherwise injest bath salts, and they took that opportunity to go out and commit crimes while on bath salts. So how is repealing this ban going to help? Especially with juveniles using this stuff.
Feel free to post proof that people on bath salts are more prone to go out and commit crimes or over dosing on them. For any one article you give me I will show you a thousand articles of people committing crimes or getting alcohol poisoning while drunk. But it's ok that alcohol and tobacco are still legal because you use one or both of them right?
John you're right. How is repealing a new ban on a chemical going to help those that have inadvertently used the salts without knowledge of their effects on the human body. Possibly if these people had known the salts would cause them harm they might have avoided their use. The ban will also keep those that know the effects of the salts from abusing them.
@ OldGreg
I believe that's why reported that the ban is for a year. They want to study the possibly problems the salts may cause and whether the ban will be permanent. Based on hospital reports there could be a serious problem.
It "has been reported" that table salt can be used in a 27 step process to make explosives.
An "anonymous" government panel of "experts" is now writing rules under which salt will be made illegal and rules for police entering houses without warrant to protect us from the "salt terrorists". Government experts are proposing a 85% tax on pepper as it can be a "gateway" explosive.
We are hiring 185,000 salt searchers that will a branch of the TSA. These "trained experts" will pass out the new testing and permits requirements for checking salt and nitrogen in your urine. This function will pass to the IRS as soon as congress has decided on the necessary fees to pay for our safety, and the rules prosecuting and jailing those determined to be in " non compliance"
The government is establishing rules for engine oil. It has been reported young people drinking engine oil to get high. The FDA is requiring labels telling people not to drink the engine oil. The TSA has correctly noted that most young Americans cannot read, and therefore engine oil should be sold only with after a permitted inspection.
Thank God the government is there to help us be safe from people who have been drinking engine oil and get in car wrecks
It wouldn't be a bad idea to make all drugs legal providing the government wouldn't write the monthly checks to give to the drug addicted people when they can't afford food, housing, etc.
If anyone wants the freedom to use any or all drugs legally they should also have the freedom to suffer the consequences.
These drugs "bath salts" (these aren't the things that you actually put in a bath!) aren't your ordinary drug, these things are scary. I live in a place that's been tormented by these things. People go absolutely psychotic due to these things, like running down the street naked with an assault weapon because they think people are after them. When police are called this is a 2-4 person call. In the ER powerful tranquilizers are needed to sedate them. But, this is n't something that is just a hangover in the morning, some people have to go a therapeutic doses for anti-psychotics for periods of time after. This is a bad drug...and this isn't just kids, the average user is in their 30's. And this isn't a drug where just some people "have a bad trip", almost everyone that uses it has a bad trip!
Educate your children around this drug! Peopel have killed, been killed, and killed themselves due to the effects of this.
uh...until now, people were free to snort, inject, or smoke or otherwise injest bath salts, and they took that opportunity to go out and commit crimes while on bath salts. So how is repealing this ban going to help? Especially with juveniles using this stuff.
Perhaps if they can use a much safer drug, such as pot, they won't turn to dangerous ones like this... that's just one way that lifting prohibition might help.... scratch might... definately would help.
like running down the street naked with an assault weapon because they think people are after them.
To be fair, anybody that actually owns an assault rifle is halfway to being paranoid schizo enough to do that.
Does anyone in creation realize that anything that abuses the brain cells is death on wheels? They don't mind? They want the seconds-long kick? Have any of them learned what the best "kicks" in life are......???
The kicks we get when we do something positive using our own healthy brain cells ... accomplish something perhaps tough, but... trying ... on our own! that trying we can be proud of! these are the true highs. Why have so few of us learned this?
We need the one thing, the only thing... that is capable of giving us the ultimate rush... which stays with us btw forever ... and that is ... being the best we can be on our own without artificial gobbledegook that fools the brain cells we have up there between our ears, and sooner rather than later, kills them off.
And, much as I respect and naturally depend on good doctors... I am coming to believe that medical help should start taking a look at the prognosis... the real prognosis of those sporting deterioration from excessive use of drugs. And weigh the benefits to the individual based on keeping any of them able to continue their self-destructive ways.... and not just themselves... any at danger from them to others.
And that goes for people in pain... and the so highly touted "pain killers."
There is a drug I can recommend because I work very hard to keep it working for me ... our brains manufacture it. It's called Endurance. And I can tell you, it works.
Just use the head you were born with... strengthen it with "exercise" i.e., using it. The results through life can be, if you learn determination, learn the techniques... so very worth going after. It's there; science supports that. Find it. Use it.
HeartsQuest, next time you have an aneurysm, heart attack, infected cut, bad stomach pains or like me a stroke, don't call the doctors, just take an enema and and walk it off. Stop thinking for gods sake, why don't ya? 50 to 60 % of us over 50 are still alive because of Modern Medicine. I would have kicked off at the ripe old age of 46 and my brother in law at 38. Glad our wives called 911. Oh yeah, I guess that number is abused as well right? You have to be young and pain free to speak like this. never once spending a day in another's shoes. I'm thankful your pain free and healthy. Guess I should have been put down at birth, considering my gene pool and all. Parents should have received a tattoo making it illegal for them too have children because of probable heart disease, high BP with inherited severe cervical and lumbar stenosis (Ummph Mien Kampf comes to mind, ring any bells?). But I'm really happy life is working out great for you, really, fell free too dally with my meds the next time you have a crappy opinion, anytime, I don't mind........Peace
Inadaze, you are not correct. You can stop the mass marketing of recreational drugs.
The problem is that it takes these investigators years to figure out that Herbal Extacy or "bath salts" are being marketed as drugs.... They are either remarkably stupid, or never get out of their offices.
Ben these "bath salts" aren't herbal in any shape or form. They aren't epsom salts either.
Bath salts contain manmade chemicals like mephedrone and methylenedioxypyrovalerone, or MDPV, also known as substituted cathinones.
Some really nasty stuff. Then again it is related chemically to Ritalin. I guess if you are too embarrassed to admit you have ADD or ADHD you take this crap. Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methylenedioxypyrovalerone
Some of the states around me have finally banned the stuff and Ohio finally did so just last week. Whether the DEA keeps its ban the states will.
For you who insist on using this stuff. More power to you. Feel free to find a nice private place to do so and stay there. We will see that you get a good send off for your dirt nap. Just don't expect us to take care of you and yours while you iimbide in your recreation.
I was not saying that they are the same, I was listing two different items that were allowed to be sold in retail outlets for some time before being banned. Does that affect your analysis of my comment?
The problem is that it takes these investigators years to figure out that Herbal Extacy or "bath salts" are being marketed as drugs
it seemed to imply HE and BS were the same with OR in the middle. but your clarification does clear that comment up.
The DEA is so far behind the curve on this they are about to kiss their own backside. I'm not into drugs. My personal choice. I have known of the dangers of "bath salts" for at least 6 months. DEA is supposed to be on top of this. I guess they are too busy busting the legal pot growers in CA.
Again my personal view is if someone wants to screw themselves up let them... just so they don't then insist we fix them afterwards. That "them" includes relatives or friends wanting them fixed. Don't use the argument they are too young to know better... Poor parenting is no excuse.
I was not saying that they are the same, I was listing two different items that were allowed to be sold in retail outlets for some time before being banned. Does that affect your analysis of my comment?
Ben to be honest NO.
I think trust_verify might be on some of that @!$%#...
"This emergency action was necessary to prevent an imminent threat to public safety," the DEA said in a statement.
I'm generally NOT a conspiracy believer but this has been in the news for how many months now? I guess someone wasn't making their cut and can now raise the prices since it is illegal now. WHAT took so freaking long for the DEA to take action? Did some senators child get sick?
LMAO Yeah, what took so long. Could it be the jerk reaction from some in the public that claim the government is trying to control everything people do? Some say the government reacts too soon and other say the government doesn't react fast enough.
Sometimes I believe that if the government saved the world by destroying a mile wide asteroid there would be those that would say the government reacted too soon and there would be those that would say the government should have reacted sooner.
Banning these substances will certainly keep me and others from using them now. Thanks DEA! Banning things always works to make the issue go away! It will just make it more expensive and tax free now.
nope. but at least your child can't walk into a gas station and buy it. Now, they'll probably go to the ghetto, but that's on parents to teach their kids not to go into the ghetto to buy drugs (should be self-evident).
my cousin had tried them a few times. he realized that along with the buzz he bacame uncommonly suicidal when he was taking them. thank god he stopped on his own when he realized. and he is not a person who would ever think of suicide or has any mental health issues. he says it was def the drug. ive read else where that teens have experienced that effect also.... great... a drug that makes you want to kill yourself... like that movie... the happening
It's unfortunate that the suicides from this substance are not more publicized as there have been many. Next door neighbour's son and his friend have both taken their lives.
The name of it was misleading and those that didn't truly know enough about it and most definitely parents didn't think about it with the name 'bath salts' as kids easily lied about what it was. I'm thrilled but want to see a perm ban. But, I'm not stupid in that it will go underground and probably resurface under another name. I'm just happy to know it's not on the shelf at the gas station and the little convenience stores - at least for now. We'll just have to pick up and battle on the next one when it comes back.
I guess the authorities are starting to realize that anykind of drugs will enhance or stimulate some kind of human behavior... there are thousands upon thousands of these drugs .. and the only way to stop this behavior of consumption is plain and clearly education of the masses... there is no other way to stop anytipe of consumption unless the people know what they´re getting into...EDUCATION plain and simple CONFUSIUS
Larry you beat me to it. The Govt/DEA has been telling lies and half truths for decades. Then we expect the young to believe them when they say how bad drugs like Meth and now these bath salt are. Lie often enough and people wont believe you even when you tell the the sky looks blue.
This stuff has destroyed my husband (or he let it destroy him), he used it for 6 months.. Job, family, friends, all gone trying to help. Glad to finally see this. No one knows the long term effects. he is lucky he is still alive.
A child, or delinquent can get high on many, many things, including gasoline and glue...ARE YOU GOING TO BAN EVERYTHING do to the ignorance of people bound for self destruction? Why don't you LOOK to the causes, like decayed families, society, games and television programming showing porno of violence, sex, and rudeness in a system spiraling down to humans, sub-humans, monsters and leaders....funny how it correlates with the Government in bed with the Mafia.
First... there is no real war on drugs. Look around
Second... "bath salts" are sold in convenience stores and head shops for anyone's children to buy. The mental health units all over the country have been inundated with patients. Some return to "normal" but sadly, some do not. Talking with our local unit in the hospital, he advises that it has become epidemic in some cities. This product is being manufactured in the far east and labeled "bath salts - not for human consumption." That's how they got around the DEA in the beginning. Those of you posting here who find this to be a joke obviously haven't done your research or are too brain-dead to care.
Gee, I sure feel safer now that teenagers can't sit in a bathtub and get high. I mean, there couldn't POSSIBLY be anything more important for our law enforcement agencies to worry about.
This stuff was just called Bath salts. It came in a small package that contained less then a teaspoon of powder. It wasn't enough to actually use in a tub.
I've been around a lot of drug users of all preferences, but never have I seen a drug that completely derailed a person's ability to relate the hallucinations back to the drug. I feel like that alone makes 'bath salts' one of the most dangerous drugs I've been around.
And that was before a friend's son died, high on bath salts. However, I'm a very firm believer that if marijuana had been legal he'd have never even tried it.
Users have reported impaired perception, reduced motor control, disorientation, extreme paranoia and violent episodes, with other unknown longer-term physical and psychological effects.
I don't know that much about chemicals but I do know that their are plenty of idiots looking to get a Darwin award from abusing them. Banning drugs only makes people get more creative in looking for a cheap high. As for the comment earlier on post 7 about education, well they started drug education programs in the 60's and people are still taking junk so education is not the answer either.
As long as their are people looking to escape the pain of their lives or just looking for a cheap thrill people are going to look for some sort of chemical to put in their body to do it.
Awesome. Another illegal substance. Thanks big brother. Without you I would never know what to put in my body. People are going to be smoking paper towels in 6 years just to see because every other chemical will be illegal. People are going to try to get high. Legalize the things you know already and have studied. You can treat them already. The enemy you know is always better then the one you don't. Oh crap, someone found out how to abuse carbon. We must ban it.
More legislated morality and a new blackmarket is born. Sounds like some one wants to cash in on the new craze. Because thats EXACTLY what is going to happen.
Drugs are illegal to keep them highly profitable. And you better believe people at the top are cashing in one way or another. Whether they are running a for-profit privately owned prison, or have a cushy job in drug enforcement. Or taking pay offs, or even importing. Or using it for political posturing and getting votes.
And the taxpayer is the biggest loser, because most of the profit comes from them paying for the war on drugs. Theres a very good reason the war will never be won, because the majority dont want to win it, and never did.
One of the main obstacles to ending prohibition in the 30's, was corrupt government officials who were making fortunes off it remaining illegal. It was the exposure of this corruption, that finally brought about the end to prohibition and all the lawlessness and graft.
...and the nanny state wags its finger once again. what's next on the banned list? camp fuel? aerosol can propellant? a couple years of high school or college chemistry under your belt and you can create a plethora of concoctions to make you giggle. they can't ban everything but they'll sure try.
To all of you that say don't bother banning the bath salts.. Should see all the crimes and self harm and harm to others commited by people that used this stuff in Pennsylvania..the cigarette shops, truck stops etc all sold em..some guy litterly cut his intestines out while high on this stuff..and were way WAY worse stories of people high on this stuff..heroin and crack addicts cringe at this drug even...
All bath salts? The article didn't seem to specify, to me at least. I have bath salts in my bathroom right now, do I need to get rid of them? Or is there a specific brand that's been banned?
You just admitted to being a druggy online for millions to see. We could lock you away for a very long time, Smokey. But I'll tell you what... Maybe--if you tell us who your contacts are--we can work out a deal with the judge.
s...
This is the same type of thing that happened during the alcohol prohibition of the 1930's.
People would mix up all types of strange alcoholic concoctions and sell them.
My grandparents told me that sometimes there would be entire families of 16 people found dead after buying and drinking these alcoholic concoctions.
They also told me that repealing the prohibition was the best thing that ever happened.
Maybe we should consider that today as well.
.

As soon as you ban one thing, people will find something else to abuse. You'll never win, when will people learn?
Absolutely true. They ban bath salts and people just stopped taking bathes and moved into public parks.
Never knew you needed salts to take a bath. I always used soap. Preferably dove to keep my skin kissably soft. {[:-)

Keep banning pot and they'll keep killing themselves finding something else to get high on.
The war on drugs is truly America's longest and most expensive war, in lives and treasure.

Yea, ban chemicals because someone has fun on it, but leave poisons legal that everyone uses (BPA).
Did you miss all the news stories over the last couple of years where people were using these "bath salts" as actual bath salts and overdosing?
I did, this article is the first I've heard of this drug.
here you go John.
Did they smoke it or what?
Don’t ban the chemical until after the Wall Street occupiers go home. They need every incentive they can get to take a bath. LOL
Since they discovered bath salts, they don't even realize the are living in a public park.
Smoke bath salts instead of bathing. Now we know why the Occupy park dwellers smell the way they do.
I've been around a lot of drug users of all preferences, but never have I seen a drug that completely derailed a person's ability to relate the hallucinations back to the drug. I feel like that alone makes 'bath salts' one of the most dangerous drugs I've been around.

Definitely something for everyone to think about...
That's why no one drinks alcohol anymore. I guess some people really don't have a clue.
Sounds like a good 12-pack of Budweiser to me.
Yesterday, it was baseball bats. Today, it's bath salts. What's next? Hugs from grandparents?
Being a graduate Biologist-Chemist I know many chemicals that could be abused by fools.

Legalize marijuana already for Christ's sake... I think we're all getting a little bit sick and tired of playing Drug-War Whack-a-Mole.
Did anyone mention legalizing pot?
Dude!!! I thought ya put um in the bathtub!!!
