I've dropped from 370 to 330 in under 6 months, i'm also 6'3" and i'm in far better health and shape than you would expect from someone that weighs that much, i'm big boned and packing a lot of muscle as well as fat. I can't say i eat the healthiest foods, biscuit and hashbrown in the morning at mcdonalds and small snacks throughout the day then usually chicken and rice and some sort of veggie for dinner. Best way to lose weight is by calorie shifting, I lost like 30 lbs when i started doing it. With little to no exercise. Secret is to eat lots of small meals and on some days you eat less and some days you pig out a little bit, but most of all you want to enjoy and be happy about what you eat. If you don't like it, you will end up rejecting it. It must be food you enjoy. Positive thinking is definitely the most important thing.
I'm 65 years old and the best shape I have been in more then 3 decades. I've lost 45 pounds, all of my vital signs have gone from at, near, or over the unhealthy levels to levels a 20 year old would envy. This morning I ran 6 miles. My body fat is the 12-14% range and 20 bmi. It took a year to reach my goals and i've kept it off for 4 years. Any fool knows what they need to do... its the doing it and sticking with it that counts. On one hand its not complicated yet simple minded advice as in articles like this don't help one bit.
I have been losing weight by drastically reducing carbs (bread, pasta, rice and potatoes) - eating none five or six days a week - and not snacking on junk or drinking Coke (again, 5 or 6 days a week). I eat all day: raisins, nuts, cheese, strawberries with sour cream and brown sugar!! I eat things with lots of calories but "healthy" calories. Steadily losing weight and feeling better. And every 5 or 6 days or so, I eat garbage one or two days, so I don't feel like I am doomed to a life of no fun food.
Doesn't make sense, I am ingesting a lot of calories, but it is working!
Cutting the cheap carbs was a great move. It worked for me as well. Don't get me wrong, you need carbs but when you eat too many you start storing fat and you burn only carbs. That is why people who eat low fat high carb diets still have a tendency to be over weight. IMO, the "low/no fat" craze that started in the eighties did a lot more damage than good. Check out some full flavor foods versus no fat and you will see that the no fat stuff has more calories and sugar per serving than the full flavor items.
Just stop eating corporate frankenfoods that are unnatural and modified by removing nutrients for sale in other products and a minimum amount of nutrition returned. (Flour, peanut butter, and super refined sugar for example.)
If you can afford it start using whole foods. Skip the Easy to prepare crap. You will lose weight and be healthier.
Easy to say for those that are healthy. I have torn rotator cuffs in both shoulders so no swimming, coronary artery disease and 3 stents in one artery near my heart (no strenuous exercise and a diabetic ulcer on one foot that has failed to heal in 5 years. My ability to exercise 5 rimes week at 69 years old is severely limited. I have tried the reduced calorie route but it still remains difficult to take weight of of a 6 foot six inch 300 pound body. Pushn my wheelchair around all day long doesn't count
Anyone actually benefiting from this article must not have much common sense.
I think most people that would bother to read this story already knew that they need to eat healthier and exercise more to lose weight! When the story gets into specifics its kind of ridiculous. Age is not such a defining characteristic. A person's lifestyle and body makeup are much more pertinent.
article obviously written by a yougn person..notice how there are less details on what to as you get older?>. the person should have added.."good for you for just gettin up in the morning".. no new info here..
You really can't expect to be in crappy shape and abuse your body with unhealthy foods for 50-60 years, then magically get better. The ability to keep exercising into your 60's, 60's, and 80's, is dependent on doing so when you're younger. Do what you can when you're older - but MUCH better to start younger (and start your kids younger too).
Exactly, people call me a food snob even though I do not consider myself a food snob. I've had people tell me that "Your going to die anyway" and I agree. I would rather be healthy and active into my late years versus spending my last ten to fifteen years depending on machines and someone else to live. One last thought, exercise is just as IMPORTANT as diet. Tired of seeing all the ads about how easy it is to loose weight with no exercise. With the obesity rates the way they are; it is obvious to me that it is not typical to lose or maintain weight without exercise.
I'm a 5'1 inch 44 year old woman, formerly "chubby", but I've maintained a strong, healthy weight for many years thanks to: 1) eating a healthy, low-fat breakfast every day, including a nice bowl of mixed fresh fruit; 2) grazing (small meals throughout the day); 3) regular (but not fanatical) exercise; 4) not getting any calories from liquids (except my evening glass of red wine); 5) seriously limiting processed/packaged foods; 6) and this is huge--seriously limiting how much I eat out. I think eating out is the major curse of anyone trying to lose weight. Even salads cannot be trusted. I enjoy my glass of wine in the evening and have a treat every few days and never feel like I'm depriving myself.
35 grams of protein + 22 grams of carbs + 10 grams of fat equals 318 calories. That's quite a bit higher than 250 calories per meal mention in the article...
oh no mister bill I love carbs pizza is my friend I don't do fish or turkey. I guess I just have to be heavy and try harder. Over fifty and can run a mile or walk three. And if you don't know about good foods and junk after age 15 well shame on you, and read a book.

Starting your day off with high carb breakfast boosts your insulin levels which has been shown to stop fat burning. Not a good idea.
