Not to worry. The food inspectors that the FDA no longer has due to the budget cuts implemented by the Republicans (all that unfair and restricting regulation, you know) will insure that nobody gets listeria.
Actually listeria comes from contaminated equipment, too, and listeria can be found on the soles of even your shoes, Pragmatic. Equipment gets contaminated because the food-processing Corporations would rather "save money" than ensure that the equipment used to process food is kept clean and sanitized.
Watch food inc. its both sides of the government protection the large food corp. I don't buy the left-right wing bs...they are all in it together..we are all being had! its all about money and power!
Woopie hire more Illegal Aliens throughout the US Food Processing (Meat Packing and Processing, Fruit and Vegetable Packing and Processing).
Close down more of the US Fruit and Vegetable Basket of California with Lawsuits and Court Injunctions to save the over 20 Species of Endangered Fresh water Fish by stopping Irrigation (no water to the California Fruit and Vegetable Basket). Resulting in more imports from Mexico, South and Central Americas (low or no sanitation).
Solution: Don't Hesitate Irradiate all these products.
We need a better control over our food supply. Meats and poultry are loaded with antibiotics and hormones, fruits and vegetables are watered with sewage water, and Dow Chemical and Monsanto are big players in food production, (the makers of Agent Orange).
Cleaning up that industry is a job creator. We need responsibility from corporations, yet they have proved that they will do nothing without being forced. Stronger regulation is needed.
We need responsibility from corporations, yet they have proved that they will do nothing without being forced. Stronger regulation is needed.
No what we need is more competition so we have a choice other than buying from the big corporations. All regulations do is choke out the little guy who can't afford to keep up with the red tape. The big corps hire armies of lawyers to stay in compliance and to find the loopholes. Perhaps you've heard the saying- "regulators are always fighting the last war". While some of the big corps find new ways to cut a corner or save a buck.
If you've got a hundred or even just a dozen choices you can stop buying from those who don't or won't provide a quality product. In many markets there is only one or two options so it's either go without or trust (pray) that you're getting some of the 2% of the product that the FDA, with it's 4 billion dollar budget, manages to inspect.
Big corporations LOVE regulations. They pay lobbyists millions to influence how they are written and implemented. And yet the libs just cry out for more and more; not because they do jack sh!t to solve the problem, just because they provide a false sense of security. Which we know is what all libs want most, someone holding their hand.
Yes, I, too recall bagged spinach - it's the green stuff you pull out of the garden - sometimes I put it in a bag - just like the folks in the article.
I didn't have room to grow spinach this year. Instead, I wasted garden space on things that don't have to be frozen or canned to "keep" over the winter -- things like beans, squash and corn.
The last time spinach was found to be the cause of an ecoli episode, the FDA condemned tomatoes. I wonder if they ever compensated those farmers for their mistake.
the fda is being ran by ex-execs of the major food corp.s they lobby the gov. not just one side but both.. tell me how the gov. could allow someone to patient food, just because they genetically altered it?..then sue anyone for patient infringment if your crops get exposed to their pollination ..watch Food inc. Why didn't MSN put such and important notice on the top of the page? I could care less if celebrities don't dress for their age, but throwing out my spinach has a direct impact on my life today. YIKES! Good thing I saw the tiny little print and clicked on it. Gotta go clean out the fridge...I wonder if Fresh N Easy will give me a refund for the tainted bag of spinach?
Be sure to educate yourself on how to properly compost and such. Oh, and be sure that you also go buy at least 30 acres of good farmland, too -- you'll probably need it to grow enough food to feed your family through the "dead" seasons.
Do you seriously think the FDA can prevent the tainting of our food? We hear about this every day. It has probably been happening since the beginning of supermarkets. We just didn't have the internet to tell us why we didn't feel well for a few days. Or died?
My mother (83) used to get sick in the summer when she was a child. It was something about whatever the cows were eating, or poor refridgeration or whatever. Point is, our food is probably "cleaner" than it was in the old days. Maybe we're too well informed and also not as tough.
According to Dr. Karen Davis ( www.upc-online.org) food born illnesses such as Listeria, thrive in animal feces. Veggies and fruits do NOT contain harmful pathogens like animal guts do and manure.
If people STOPPED their love affair with animal body parts, these contaminations and other diseases would be erradicated. Instead, due to feeding farmed animals about half of ALL antibiotics manufactured, the medical industry is very concerned that humans are becoming as resistant to their ability to kill bacteria in humans, as they are to kill bacteria in animals intestines. Superbugs are now being born of this most dangerous "food" system.
A plant strong diet heals us from inside, out and does wonders for our immunity
Animal agriculture is literally KILLING us, as well as 90 billion farmed animals across our small planet, every year.
As vegan body builder Kenneth Williams says, GO VEGAN...and NO BODY GETS HURT!
Laura Slitt - According to Dr. Karen Davis ( www.upc-online.org) food born illnesses such as Listeria, thrive in animal feces.
You, Laura Slitt and Dr. Karen Davis need to take the free classes of Epidemiology from USAMRIID. There are also the free online classes from the CDC.
So if the Listeria thrives in animal feces, what are you going to do to replace the fertiziler (animal manure) used to grow the fruits and vegetables? Are you going to take a crap and piss on the fields? Composting only does so much (and not effectively per acre, acres required to feed a family of four).
Of course little do you know about the "Sludge Ponds" of reprocessed human waste processed into liquid and solid fertilizer to grow Fruits and Vegetables, as shown on a Episode of "Undercover Boss".
Bob Onnit - Does anyone else here see the hilarity?
Yes.
Bob Onnit - So I guess it's OK. for us to eat the Spinach?...
Popeye is gonna get his arse whipped by Brutus and then starve to death.
Again the Solution: Don't Hesitate Irradiate all these products.
Just like all the Archaeologists possibly digging up some ancient lethal virus, how about all that fresh frozen spinach?
A few weeks, months, years later someone pulls a bag of spinach out of their freezer, and boom Hersey squirts (explosive diarreha) and volcano vomiting.
Barbara Ann-671325 - Apparently I can't eat vegetables/fruit anymore! listeria outbreaks the norm now?
Cook everything on high (or boiling, "rolling boil") for over 10 minutes (kills most bacteria and viruses, does not do anything about toxins like botulism). After all a little charcoal will not harm you (your food cooked over 10 minutes as "Burnt Offering").
Also use "Sterile Procedures" while preparing Food (If you do not know what that means, take high level (400s) pre Med School, Micro Biology College Course(s)).
There are also procedures of using a Microwave Oven to insure most bacteria and viruses are dead.
Some methods would also include "Blacklights" (aka UV Lights for Sterilization).
Chemical methods, like natural antibiotics like garlic, "cooking" using vinegar (pickling), osmosis processes using salts and sugars, etc..
I couldn't care less what you find offensive.I find illegals offensive. You keep defending these pukes all you want. I'll buy my stuff from the local farmers that really work for a living as do I. You can keep talking $hit and keep eating the $hit that is is the news all you want.
Imatthebeach - Issac, I find your comment offensive and of no value.
Has a lot to do with these situations, as the Illegal Aliens coming to the US are not exactly the cream of the crop, as they are usually the least educated (especially sanitation and personal hygiene) and could not get jobs in their own Nations.
Think about those conditions that bred the Mexican Flu (H1N1)*, how about this watch the movie (mostly accurate due to the cooperation of the CDC), "Contagion". So when something like this happens or worse, or something like carriers of Typhoid, etc. are you still going to be Politically Correct. Reason why the Legal Immigrants originally were Quarantined until Medically Screened at Ellis Island.
*Before you start with your Politically Correct nonsense, Historically, pathogens are named after their Outbreak locations for Scientific Purposes, like Russian Flu, Hong Kong Flu, Ebola Reston, etc.. The source of the Mexican Flu (H1N1) was a farm at Mexico (a combination of avian (chickens), pig, and human), the Outbreak location was Mexico City.
Issac, my guess is that you are not living a very successful, happy life and want to take it out on someone. Hey, be my guest. I don't care what halfway literate haters think.
I suggest that, unless you go from one farm to another and buy direct from that farm, you should start asking some questions about your "local" produce. Where I live, we have farmers markets all over the place; everyone thought they were buying local. Well, turns out the people selling that produce at the markets knew one thing and one thing only: that it was bought out of state. None of them could trace the origin of the produce except to say it was not grown locally.
David, My values have been the same since before the phrase "politically correct" was ever used. Nothing I post here or anywhere else has anything to do with PA.
The illegal aliens coming to the US are not exactly the cream of the crop
Really? How do you know? I would say that people willing to do hard work, in most cases to improve living conditions for their families (or people who are willing to do hard work at all) are pretty much "the cream of the crop".
And how do you two tell the difference between "illegals" and legal migrant workers?
Carry on with your hating and prejudices. I know I can't do anything to stop you.
Issac, Issac, Issac............Just lacking in the brains department, are we? So sad. There were a lot of good comebacks for that one and you have to resort to potty mouth.
Go out and get some fresh air, little boy. School's back in session tomorrow.
Several years ago there was an article about a group of illegals who moved from picking fruit in Washington state to picking cherries in CA--WHILE 'living' in a neighboring farmer's pecan orchard, (Without his permission, of course) and using HIS irrigation ditches for their 'plumbing' needs. And we wonder why so much of our food supply is contaminated?
In Mid MO where I live, huge CAFO operations dump big or bird excrement 8 inches deep on land they have leased, (which BTW, gets rained on!) and the smell is GAGGING even when driving near those sites. And we wonder why so much of our food supply is contaminated?
And BTW--the big 'villian' in MO is TYSON--which also routinely is cited for hiring illegal workers. And Tyson's founding/managing family is "Friends of Bill" buddies to the Clintons. I'm sure other similar operations have ties to Republican public officials. And we wonder why our food supply is contaminated?
SCRATCH any big food producer, and you will find they routinely hire illegals, and if they will break THAT law, what OTHER laws are they also breaking, in the name of profits? And we WONDER why our food supply is contaminated?
MOmaid, I just had "words" with young Issac and should have known, as in all the other stories on listeria, someone would eventually get around to blaming it on "illegals". Just how do you know those people weren't legal migrant workers? Have you researched "listeria" to educate yourself?
And, most importantly, is anyone wondering why someone decided "Listerine" would be a good name for mouthwash?
Imatthebeach - Have you researched "listeria" to educate yourself?
And, most importantly, is anyone wondering why someone decided "Listerine" would be a good name for mouthwash?
Shows just how much you researched to educate yourself. Basic Internet search determines origin of name for Listerine.
How about going to a Food Processing Plant to see for yourself (you will seriously consider growning your own food afterwards). Also go to the "employees" restrooms and watch the employees after they took a sh!t. Also watch how they handle the manure, dirt, etc. while picking the fruits and vegetables (sh!tting and urinating on the fruits and vegetables, instead of going to the porta potties).
There are times when using a cuss word seems to fit , kind of like calling a sissy a sissy. I'm out of here , going to have a few beers with the local farmers and use a bathroom instead of the field. No sissies aloud.

Issac... Were are you going to find a bathroom in there fields? Drink beer and than pea in you're pants?
Close enough there folks?
Sorry to step on your toes beach. I was still trying to come up with enough incorrect words to press the point home.
Young Issac is well in his 60's and can see how the so called left is the problem with this country. You would not know right from wrong if it bit you in the ass.
Well, Issac, if you really are in your 60s, I certainly am glad I've never had the misfortune of meeting you. So sad when a mature person has to resort to phrases such as "eat &hit" and "bit you in the ass". One would hope to have buit a satisfactory vocabulary by that stage of life.
Of course you're a Teabagger so that would explain it.
Go and...........well, do whatever you people do to lighten up and have fun. Have a tea party.
Typical "American" corporatist practice nowadays: rush junk onto the market to make oodles of money for the !% and hope not to get caught. The conservative, Republican, tea baggers love that. They think it's "American" and "freedom."
When I was growing up in the 40s-50s we did grow most of our own food, but we had 167 Acres of land to farm. Unfortunately, most of us do not have enough land to grow our own food, and in many cases we are restricted as to what we can raise in our own back yard. I can't live on the out put of a few tomato vines, but they do help, and I know thier history, but we still wash them before we use them. If people would consider all fresh foods to be contaminated, properly wash the foods, and properly prepare the food, they would not have to worry about out breaks of illness. We are our own worst enemy.
never mind all the political bullcrap. who processed this food? was it picked and processed by illegal migrant workers? or do they have muslims working in their processing plants poisoning it on purpose? those are the questions to ask.
Symptoms can include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. ......... My wife said I was pretty stiff last night , should I be worried ????..........
Not to worry. The food inspectors that the FDA no longer has due to the budget cuts implemented by the Republicans (all that unfair and restricting regulation, you know) will insure that nobody gets listeria.
Actually listeria in produce comes from dirty water. So we can blame the Republican budget cuts to the EPA for that.
Actually listeria comes from contaminated equipment, too, and listeria can be found on the soles of even your shoes, Pragmatic. Equipment gets contaminated because the food-processing Corporations would rather "save money" than ensure that the equipment used to process food is kept clean and sanitized.

The food and water supply are going to be a very bad situation, on this planet, in the next few years...Be prepared!
never mind all the political bullcrap. who processed this food? was it picked and processed by illegal migrant workers? or do they have muslims working in their processing plants poisoning it on purpose? those are the questions to ask.
