Not to worry. The food inspectors that the FDA no longer has due to the budget cuts implemented by the Republicans (all that unfair and restricting regulation, you know) will insure that nobody gets listeria.
Actually listeria in produce comes from dirty water. So we can blame the Republican budget cuts to the EPA for that.
Actually listeria comes from contaminated equipment, too, and listeria can be found on the soles of even your shoes, Pragmatic. Equipment gets contaminated because the food-processing Corporations would rather "save money" than ensure that the equipment used to process food is kept clean and sanitized.

Resulting in more imports from Mexico, South and Central Americas (low or no sanitation).

We need a better control over our food supply. Meats and poultry are loaded with antibiotics and hormones, fruits and vegetables are watered with sewage water, and Dow Chemical and Monsanto are big players in food production, (the makers of Agent Orange).
Cleaning up that industry is a job creator. We need responsibility from corporations, yet they have proved that they will do nothing without being forced. Stronger regulation is needed.
No what we need is more competition so we have a choice other than buying from the big corporations. All regulations do is choke out the little guy who can't afford to keep up with the red tape. The big corps hire armies of lawyers to stay in compliance and to find the loopholes. Perhaps you've heard the saying- "regulators are always fighting the last war". While some of the big corps find new ways to cut a corner or save a buck.
If you've got a hundred or even just a dozen choices you can stop buying from those who don't or won't provide a quality product. In many markets there is only one or two options so it's either go without or trust (pray) that you're getting some of the 2% of the product that the FDA, with it's 4 billion dollar budget, manages to inspect.
Big corporations LOVE regulations. They pay lobbyists millions to influence how they are written and implemented. And yet the libs just cry out for more and more; not because they do jack sh!t to solve the problem, just because they provide a false sense of security. Which we know is what all libs want most, someone holding their hand.
What's the point of competition when the big boys will either A.) buy out the competion or B.) force them out of business through endless litigation.

Yes, I, too recall bagged spinach - it's the green stuff you pull out of the garden - sometimes I put it in a bag - just like the folks in the article.
I didn't have room to grow spinach this year. Instead, I wasted garden space on things that don't have to be frozen or canned to "keep" over the winter -- things like beans, squash and corn.

The last time spinach was found to be the cause of an ecoli episode, the FDA condemned tomatoes. I wonder if they ever compensated those farmers for their mistake.
the fda is being ran by ex-execs of the major food corp.s they lobby the gov. not just one side but both.. tell me how the gov. could allow someone to patient food, just because they genetically altered it?..then sue anyone for patient infringment if your crops get exposed to their pollination ..watch Food inc. Why didn't MSN put such and important notice on the top of the page? I could care less if celebrities don't dress for their age, but throwing out my spinach has a direct impact on my life today. YIKES! Good thing I saw the tiny little print and clicked on it. Gotta go clean out the fridge...I wonder if Fresh N Easy will give me a refund for the tainted bag of spinach?

Be sure to educate yourself on how to properly compost and such. Oh, and be sure that you also go buy at least 30 acres of good farmland, too -- you'll probably need it to grow enough food to feed your family through the "dead" seasons.
Do you seriously think the FDA can prevent the tainting of our food? We hear about this every day. It has probably been happening since the beginning of supermarkets. We just didn't have the internet to tell us why we didn't feel well for a few days. Or died?
My mother (83) used to get sick in the summer when she was a child. It was something about whatever the cows were eating, or poor refridgeration or whatever. Point is, our food is probably "cleaner" than it was in the old days. Maybe we're too well informed and also not as tough.

So if the Listeria thrives in animal feces, what are you going to do to replace the fertiziler (animal manure) used to grow the fruits and vegetables? Are you going to take a crap and piss on the fields? Composting only does so much (and not effectively per acre, acres required to feed a family of four).

Cook everything on high (or boiling, "rolling boil") for over 10 minutes (kills most bacteria and viruses, does not do anything about toxins like botulism). After all a little charcoal will not harm you (your food cooked over 10 minutes as "Burnt Offering").
Also use "Sterile Procedures" while preparing Food (If you do not know what that means, take high level (400s) pre Med School, Micro Biology College Course(s)).
There are also procedures of using a Microwave Oven to insure most bacteria and viruses are dead.
Some methods would also include "Blacklights" (aka UV Lights for Sterilization).
Chemical methods, like natural antibiotics like garlic, "cooking" using vinegar (pickling), osmosis processes using salts and sugars, etc..
Keep letting the illegals crap in the fields, this is what you get.

I suggest that, unless you go from one farm to another and buy direct from that farm, you should start asking some questions about your "local" produce. Where I live, we have farmers markets all over the place; everyone thought they were buying local. Well, turns out the people selling that produce at the markets knew one thing and one thing only: that it was bought out of state. None of them could trace the origin of the produce except to say it was not grown locally.

Several years ago there was an article about a group of illegals who moved from picking fruit in Washington state to picking cherries in CA--WHILE 'living' in a neighboring farmer's pecan orchard, (Without his permission, of course) and using HIS irrigation ditches for their 'plumbing' needs. And we wonder why so much of our food supply is contaminated?
In Mid MO where I live, huge CAFO operations dump big or bird excrement 8 inches deep on land they have leased, (which BTW, gets rained on!) and the smell is GAGGING even when driving near those sites. And we wonder why so much of our food supply is contaminated?
And BTW--the big 'villian' in MO is TYSON--which also routinely is cited for hiring illegal workers. And Tyson's founding/managing family is "Friends of Bill" buddies to the Clintons. I'm sure other similar operations have ties to Republican public officials. And we wonder why our food supply is contaminated?

How about going to a Food Processing Plant to see for yourself (you will seriously consider growning your own food afterwards). Also go to the "employees" restrooms and watch the employees after they took a sh!t. Also watch how they handle the manure, dirt, etc. while picking the fruits and vegetables (sh!tting and urinating on the fruits and vegetables, instead of going to the porta potties).

When I was growing up in the 40s-50s we did grow most of our own food, but we had 167 Acres of land to farm. Unfortunately, most of us do not have enough land to grow our own food, and in many cases we are restricted as to what we can raise in our own back yard. I can't live on the out put of a few tomato vines, but they do help, and I know thier history, but we still wash them before we use them. If people would consider all fresh foods to be contaminated, properly wash the foods, and properly prepare the food, they would not have to worry about out breaks of illness. We are our own worst enemy.
The food and water supply are going to be a very bad situation, on this planet, in the next few years...Be prepared!
