I was taking Chantix several years ago and lost a lifelong best friend as a result. I became extremely hostile and aggressive and did not realize until after several days that something inside me had radically changed. The anger I had over almost nothing was indescribable.
"Chantix works by binding to the same spots in the brain that nicotine does when people smoke, blocking nicotine from those spots ..."
Nicotinic receptors in our brains are for binding nicotine. Nicotine is good. Trickery with Chantix is not so good.
The propaganda is that smoking is bad for all. The truth is that smoking is bad for some and good for others. We should decide by ourselves which is true for us.
Doctors and users like me started this "talk". I was one of those negatively affected by the drug.
Congrats on being smoke free!!!! Way to go!!!!
However, this drug is not for everyone. And as the article states, the FDA results are inclusive because they only include cases that required hospitalization.
Nicotine itself isn't harmful but is a large part of the addiction of smoking. It's the thousands of burnt chemicals that you inhale that increase your risk of heart disease, strokes, bladder and lung cancer. In countries were smoking isn't very socially acceptable a large percent of smokers have mental health issue they are self medicated. Most everyone else without mental illness to some degree give up smoking without such difficulties. Blocking nicotine can be helpful in breaking the addiction. However for those with various degrees of mental illness this may worse their pre-existing problems.
Not smoking makes me pretty crazy, angry and hostile. Actually I think that is a part of my personality, and some things trigger those feelings. Such feelings are pretty horrible; I don't have to hurt anyone including myself [physically] in those circumstances but I do sometimes regret things said or done in extreme frustration or anger. I am considering this drug but thinking it is not for me.
It's a miracle pill, and it was the only way I was able to quit after countless attempts over the years. Same goes for my dad who was a chain smoker before he used it. It didn't affect my moods severely like others report. I was a bit more emotional sometimes, but that is a small price to pay to kick that disgusting, unhealthy habit.
Chantix is a winner, but you have to be committed to quitting. My wife is a smoker of 25 years, trying to quit unsuccessfully on-and-off for the last 15. After a month it is working well, and she says it helps enormously. If the side effects are overwhelming, you can just take one pill a day and stretch the meds out (that is what she does).
My sister had to call 911 after taking this. She blacked out and had only one can be described as a mild seizure. It is very dangerous for some, maybe not all but definitely for some. Just quit cold turkey like I did 20 years ago!! Best thing I have ever done is to quit and who the hell knows what the long term effects will be with these pills either.
The FDA is is telling a WHOOPER. For people with depression or Manic Depressive like me this can be a dangerous drug. You have no idea how terrifying vivid dreams can be if all you have are nightmares. The drug only intensifies thoughts of suicide.
I am not saying they should take it off the market BUT they should stop with the lies.
Luvenia, did you discuss with your doctor before taking Chantix that you have manic depressive disorder? Maybe that is the problem with folks when you get medicine is that you should disclose what you are on before you take something else. That would solve a lot of problems.
My wife has a history of mental issues and her doctor put her on it. The doctor's comment was that compared to the risks from smoking, it was worth it and just be aware of the side effects should they manifest themselves.
She has been smoke free for over 3 years. She smoked up to 4 packs a day at one time, 3 packs a day when she started Chantix. I've been smoke free for 2 years thanks to Chantix.
I kind of miss the side effects myself! Those wild dreams were rocking!
Over 20 years ago, before Chantix, my doctor gave me the choice of keep breathing or keep smoking. I chose breathing. I stopped cold turkey and never looked back. No it was not easy, but well worth it.
I also used Chantix to quit four years ago after over forty years of smoking. I feel a lot more aggressive now but i was also very aggressive when i was young so i dont think it was the drug but it may have brought my emotions back twenty plus years. As to a choice, i'd take the potential of manslaughter as a price to quit smoking any day of the week.
Early last year I took Chantix. A month later I was in the crisis unit of the psych hospital for a week. First time I've been committed. It wasn't fun.
I smoked for over 40 years, getting up to three packs a day. In Dec 2008, I was in the hospital with bilateral pneumonia. I was hospitalized for six days. That was it for me and smoking. In Jan 2009, I attended a smoking cessation class and filled my prescription for Chantix. In March 2012, I will have been a non-smoker for three years with no desire to smoke. During the treatment, my wife noticed no emotional changes or any character change whatsoever. I had no problem with sleeping and my diet improved. I had no problems with Chantix.
As for as what the FDA says on drugs by these large drug companies. Check out the movie "Burzyeski." The drug companies lobbyist works on the FDA as they do on our politicians.
The problem here is, people think Chantix will eliminate all the side effects of quitting smoking. That is just not the case. What it does is let you forget the cravings. It gives you breaks so you are not constantly under siege with desire to smoke. So people do not feel the urge to smoke, yet they are confused when they notice they agitate easily, are fidgety, etc.. These are NORMAL side effects of quitting smoking, but the Chantix takes away the association. They are not side effects from the drug, but from nicotine withdrawal. I smoked for over 20 years and the only thing that saved me was Chantix. It is a life saver and anyone who claims they had psychotic episodes from taking the drug would probably say the same with a placebo..
Joe: It's wrong to say it's good for all, or put the entire blame on withdraw of smoking. Many like the above [Luvenia48], it can be a terrible drug. I'm happy that it cured you. Hopefully our doctors study the patient, before issuing it.
Now lets go to the last six words of the first paragraph: through the findings are not definitive. Lets go further on this article: The FAA have banned it for the pilots and air traffic controllers. Now let's go further: The FDA is continuing to study the problem. Let's go further:Pfizer study on this, won't be out till 2017.
I would say, the head line is somewhat mis-leading
All medications are metabolize by liver enzymes and everyone has different genetics of same. I took Chantix and it worked fine except for the vivid dreams. I had a patient that told me she had a brother who took Chantix and suicided. All antidepressants are subject of doing the same thing with certain vulnerable people. Nothing is one drug fits all. Noone should take Chantix without some supervision.
The problem is folks look for a quick fix and don't think about medicine interaction. Instead of blaming Chantix, do people tell their doctors if they are taking other medicine. Not a big fan of big pharma, but when ever I get medicine, I read the pamphlet about what you can and can not take with the medicine, or I discuss it with my doctor when I go on a visit to make sure it doesn't cancel out any other medicine I am taking at the time. And don't people listen to the commericials that are on tv, when the side effects are mentioned or the possible drug interactions. Am I the only one who listens to the commercials?
This is a great example of what is wrong with the FDA, they are supposed to be keeping people safe and here they are shilling for Pfizer. Then they go on to say it's an incomplete study. As if the FDA doesn't already have a vested financial interest in keeping Chantix legal, now they are issuing self-serving studies.
I don't believe anything the FDA says. In 1988, when Prozac came on the market, Eli Lilly used flawed studies-hiding the suicidal numbers-to promote their drug, and the FDA was aware of it, yet still approved it. Read Robert Whitaker's "anatomy of an epidemic'..tells the whole story, with all documented resources.
Its time people woke up about how the FDA works. They are nothing but a paid division to whoever has the most money. Case in point: Oh sure, Chantix is safe, trust us! On the flip side: Ecigs are bad! They have carcinogens! All that after studying two brands with 9 cartridges each and only 1 showing carcinogens at 100x lower amount than what is in real cigarettes. They ignored the fact that most people do not use those brands, but rather fill their own with better known and trusted liquid manufacturers.
The FDA will pander any drug or help block better drugs if they paid enough money. The FDA needs to be either overhauled or removed completely. There are so many drugs that have been used oversea's to treat illnesses that are blocked in the US so as not to compete with lesser performing drugs from big name pharma companies. If you trust the FDA, well I got some ocean front property here in OK to sell you.
Me, my mom and my sister took Chantix years ago and we all had to be taken off of it. It worked well for me but I noticed that I was having horrible nightmares. They seemed so real that sometimes I would wake up screaming or jump out of bed to check on everything. And the crazy dreams I were able to sleep through I still remember even though I can usually never remember a dream after I wake up. My mom had the same experiences. My sister, on the other hand, developed insomnia and couldnt sleep for days while on the drug. None of us have any mental problems but I can imagine what this drug can do to someone that does.
The very real and sever problems many people experience from the use of Chantix and Wellbutrin may not result in hospitalization, but are none the less debilitating. My last Chantix use resulted in depression so bad I was in bed for two weeks and another failed attempt at smoking cessation. Thankfully, I was able to sort out the adverse drug reaction from clinical depression. That may not be the case for all users of these drugs.
The good news is that I was able to stop smoking using traditional nicotine replacement products for ten days. Nicotine replacement products without Wellbutrin, identified as CQ on the package, are getting harder to find. I had to make my purchase online.
I took it 4 years ago to help me kick my 1 -2 pack a day habit of almost 30 years. I got BOTH the depression and the suicidal thoughts about a week after starting it. This isn't some second-hand rumor, I experienced it.
Good news - I haven't smoked since! No way I want to go through - or put my friends and family, that again.
I wonder how much 'pull' Phfiser had on this study... hmmmm?
I used Chantix 5 years ago to stop smoking and it worked wonders for me. Not only did I not have any of the side effects reported by others, I never wanted to go off the drug. I was more easy-going. I slept at night better than I ever have. In fact, I would have to be careful to lie down exactly as I wanted to sleep because I would fall asleep in less than a minute. I never dreamed at all or if I did, I had no memory of the dreams. Sex was amazing. I had the best orgasms of my life. Food tasted better which I guess was probably because I quit smoking and my olfactory sense improved as a result, but maybe the drug contributed to it as well. I am smoke-free now going on five years.
Chantix turned my husband into an absolute MONSTER. I did not know the man that I had been married to for 10 years while he was on that GARBAGE. There are no real "studies or clinical trials" on Chantix. Unfortunately, people will end up killing someone, themselves, etc. before the stupid FDA wakes up and pulls this stuff off the market!
I tried to quit using Chantix,it works howeverr....I did have to cut my doses in half and I was not able to continue taking it after about 6 weeks. No bad dreams,no anger, lots of mood swings and I have an appointment for a psych evaluation.I was diagnosed with Ptsd and depression and panic anxiety ten years ago.No meds for 8,but now I need them and a pyschatricist.:( Upside,I was a 2 and half packs a day,now I am down to 3,4 pulls on the e-cig.I don't crave cigs, but I play with my e cig a lot...a whole lot.lol.I would refer it but only because now I don't cough for 5 hours in the morning so....pick your poison.
I was taking Chantix several years ago and lost a lifelong best friend as a result. I became extremely hostile and aggressive and did not realize until after several days that something inside me had radically changed. The anger I had over almost nothing was indescribable.

Mood disorders REALLY??? Not for me! THANKS CHANTIX
I am sure the Tobacco company's started this 'talk" about mood disorders to keep selling their poison.

As these comments show. It's good for some and it's bad for others. The immune system of us humans are not the same.
The immune system is not very relevent in this discussion. This article is about Chantix's effect on a person's brain.
