howieCA, I've actually seen broccoli fries in the frozen section at Target. They sell it in the same area as the Amy's vegetarian meals and in the same door as frozen meals for kids.
Even though it's being marketed towards kids I am thinking about buying them and trying them, though I rarely eat fries. But they do look good.
And I REALLY hope they get this broccoli over to the states. Oven roasted with olive oil and Italian seasonings sounds ideal to me.
Super fart any one? There goes civillization as we know it....one of these brocollis and your fart would be heard for miles....try one of those while on a date and see how far that'll get ya....you could blow up a house munching on these shrubs...why do the British in a habit of messing things up for the fellows?
""There's a lot of circumstantial evidence that points to (glucoraphanin and related compounds) as the most important preventive agents for (heart attacks) and certain cancers, so it's a reasonable thing to do," said Lars Ove Dragsted, a professor in the department of human nutrition at the University of Copenhagen."
Circumstantial evidence? That is primarily what the supplement industry uses to promote and sell supplements. So I guess the big-pharma crowd will pounce on this as some scam to sell broccoli.
To create the vegetable, sold as "super broccoli," Mithen and colleagues cross-bred a traditional British broccoli with a wild, bitter Sicilian variety that has no flowery head, and a big dose of glucoraphanin. After 14 years, the enhanced hybrid was produced, which has been granted a patent by European authorities. No genetic modification was used.
Well, it's not genetically modified and tastes less bitter, so who cares if it is a scam to sell more broccoli?
They're not saying that the circumstantial evidence makes eating the super-broccoli a good thing to do, but rather that it makes the human trials comparing regular broccoli eaters with super-broccoli eaters (mentioned in the *previous* paragraph) a good thing to do. The data from those trials would be used to determine if eating the new super-broccoli should be recommended.
I think the important thing to remember, as I've told sleep patients of mine over the years, is that change doesn't happen over night....
It can't be bad that this broccoli is 'superpacked' naturally, but maybe is so because people tend to go on 'benders' moreso than change habbits.
Spring is coming, want to start a garden, look better and feel better for summer months so a short term change is started. In most instances for health to be affected, negatively or positively, changes have to be sustained.
While I do admire the work, and hope to see shown benefit, as long as most will treat this as they do so much else in life, 'short lived', I don't know how much will really be beneficial.
Yep, they just had the broccoli Iron Chef and broccoli ice cream was served. It was a vegan episode too per the chairman's instructions.
I don't know what was more funny to watch, Masaharu Morimoto trying to work with broccoli and no animal or fish protein or Jeffrey Steingarten's look when he saw the secret ingredient.
I think I have to vote for Jeffrey Steingarten. I remember the episode when Morimoto had the chilli pepper episode and he took a big bite out of a hot green chilli and nearly had a stroke. He thought it would be mild and sweet like a Japanese chilli.
Of course it is genetically modified. They did it the old fashioned way by cross breeding regular broccoli with the Sicilian cousin. Cross breeding modifies the genes, that's why they do it.
They did not use genetic modification, they put the two different broccoli types in a dimly lit room with some smooth jazz playing and let nature take over.
Dragsted said glucoraphanin is a mildly toxic compound used by plants to fight insects.
That's why they did it, now they're trying to justify it - just like a lot of GMO crops. Hopefully, it won't turn out down the road to be toxic to humans too.
super broccoli sounds like super fun...I eat raw broccoli already..I just bite the florets and chew..swallow and repeat.. I know that Kale Broc, cabbage and califlower fight against , intestinal cancers ..... so yeah!
Ok buddy, it's one thing if this were a human cloning article or something, but it's mixing two types of broccoli together to improve its nutritional value.
Mike, human nature has been building this(broccoli) for a hundred years or so. How do we know that every next generation has some sort of built in bug fighter or UV reflector?
Evolution is a wonderful thing don`t you think? Do we really need to speed up nature or more important should we ?
Do you want me to start naming all the things from our past that was to help us and in the end what happened, the opposite?
If we didn't "phuck" with mother nature the average lifespan would still be 40, and you would die of that minor infection as a kid rather than had the necessary medication to fix it.
Vitamin D addition to milk and bread virtually eliminated rickets. Resistant crops have increased grain yields for our growing population.
The advantages of advancement by far outweigh the negatives.
Do you want me to start naming all the things from our past that was to help us and in the end what happened, the opposite?
If you have any specifically relating to selective breeding (something we have been doing for thousands of years), then go ahead, list them. The only thing I can think of are pugs and Chihuahuas. Nasty little things.
Now if only they could engineer it to taste like bacon: Obesity crisis solved!
Broccoli, Lettuce, and Tomato sandwiches for everyone!
Baccoli ?
Or better yet, french fries and chips made from it. I read recently that kids get 50% of their veggies from those.
This is America, we'll take that so called super broccoli, season it with a tablespoon of salt and douse it with melted Velveeta cheese.

And no one see's the broccoli zombies coming...
Hahahaha - that's too corny!
Stay focused Steve,
We're talking about broccoli zombies not corn vampires.

Kids don't get enough vegetables anyway.
They're not saying that the circumstantial evidence makes eating the super-broccoli a good thing to do, but rather that it makes the human trials comparing regular broccoli eaters with super-broccoli eaters (mentioned in the *previous* paragraph) a good thing to do. This'll be great for getting kids to eat veggies.. 'Eat your broccoli Johnny, it wards off heart disease. You don't want heart disease, do you?'
When they create a broccoli that tastes like ice cream (and vice versa), then I'll care!
I'd bet that someone on Iron Chef America, or Chopped, has already made broccoli ice cream. Yuk! :-)
Yep, they just had the broccoli Iron Chef and broccoli ice cream was served. It was a vegan episode too per the chairman's instructions.

True, but modern genetic modification allows much more, such as inserting fish genes into corn. That is hard to do with cross breeding.
I love eating food with fish genes... GMO is so good for you...it puts hair on your A s s ...
That explains the increase of dingle berries I have had.
Berries and "cream." Gak!
They did not use genetic modification, they put the two different broccoli types in a dimly lit room with some smooth jazz playing and let nature take over.
Ah - crossed with a Sicilian variety. This broccoli will make you an offer you can't refuse.
That's why they did it, now they're trying to justify it - just like a lot of GMO crops. Hopefully, it won't turn out down the road to be toxic to humans too.
How many servings do you have to eat to make up for one pack of cigarettes?
I'd bet it goes down smooth, but comes out fighting...
Oh joy, consumers get another trendy flash-in-the pan. I can't wait to pay twice as much for Super Broccoli.
I bet George Herbert-Walker Bush still won't eat it!
super broccoli sounds like super fun...I eat raw broccoli already..I just bite the florets and chew..swallow and repeat.. I know that Kale Broc, cabbage and califlower fight against , intestinal cancers ..... so yeah!
And later on they will discover it gives you "Super Cancer".
Yup, just keep phuking with mother nature. Am I the only one who thinks we shouldn`t be screwing with everything out there ?
