There has been a terrible shortage of therapist for military families to help them deal with the problems caused by deployment. The parent left at home is trying to do everything and often the children have no place to vent the anger they feel so they are involved in fights and such. Waiting lists for therapist for children can exceed two years in some areas. The VA has to do more for vets and their families and the regular army needs to do the same. There are many more cases of PTSD among soldiers and their families than ever before so the best we can do is try to hire more therapist. In the mean time school therapist are having to help with the issue.
Why don't you give your time to Wounded Warriors or start a charity drive for an organization that helps Vets! GOVERNMENT is NOT the solution for everything!
Now that, Flash7, is beautiful.
"You 'need help' for calling out Republicans for causing the problem because you aren't out donating your own time and/or money to mop it up".
That's just about as perfect a caricature of a Republican as one could hope for...brought to you by a conservative Republican.
Flash7- Wow the rage the anger, WHO PAYS THE MILITARY? Talk about someone needing serious help, look in the mirror bud. Our military and their families are supported by the GOVERNMENT, when budgets are cut, it hurts our MILITARY and their FAMILIES. The GOP has been cutting budgets that affect them. You brought up Bush right, maybe because he got us in these wars, that are so hard on the military families! Think before you type!
Flash7, how is your attitude working out for you? I guess it isn't helping anything, is it?
Since the government sent these people to war, I feel they have responsibility for the vets and their families. What a way to say thank you for serving, huh? Take away all funding and let the families struggle. In the end, it hurts all of us. (Even if you are completely heartless, you have to admit that a rise in crime may actually affect you.) Depend on private donations? Are you serious? Not many can afford to help and many of those who can afford it really don't care.
In the end, it is always the children who pay the real price. But I guess that is OK to GOPers. The ends justify the means, right?
Let me spell this out for the the ideologues above who can't think for themselves most likely due to their public school educations. Not angry just have to school someone who doesn't know how to speak without facts.
I am not an "ideologue" but rather a pragmatic idealist, which means that I strive to make society as good as it can actually be. And yes, I did attend public schools. Do you have a problem with that? You sound not only angry but condescending, and the irony of it all is that odds are my public school education outclassed your presumably private one. I won't get into that though...because this is not a battle where the one who went to the best school wins. It is, like you said, about the facts....which makes your condescension all the more curious.
1) Government is not the solution - Keep dribbling up the Democrat talking points that GOP'ers throw Vets in the street. Funny because 95% of the military and vets vote Republican? Humm?
Right away you speak with no facts after trying to "school" people for not speaking with facts. Interesting...and disappointing. I was expecting a real argument. How can you justify the conservative talking point that "government is not the solution" when their solution to international tension is military action prosecuted by the largest and most expensive government entity by far, and when the solution to social issues like drugs, crime, and abortion is more government? The fact is the only area where Republicans want government out of our lives is business, and that has been tried and failed throughout history. Why do you insist pursuing failed policies? Didn't your private school teach you history or economics? This really is high school level history, and econ 101. And no "95% of the military and vets" most certainly do not vote Republican. That is demonstrably false. That wasn't even a nice try.
2) Why don't you press your boy Obama about the $500,000,000+ that went to Solyndra? Should that have gone to taking care of the Vets? Where is the money Obama? Funny didn't hear you ask that question above? Humm??
First, while the amount sounds impressive to you, the fact is it is less than 1% of energy grants given to private industry. Suggesting that one small failure should derail an industry is silly. Second, Congress is investigating. Did you seriously ask "where is the money"? You seem woefully uninformed about an issue you yourself bring up.
3) What about Michelle Obama spending over 8 weeks of vacations at a cost of $13,000,000 for her and her ilk? - Couldn't some of the Vets have had better something with that money? I heard her children, cousin's, aunties and the children's friends had a wonderful time... Where the money for the Vets? Humm??
This is National Enquirer news. If it is true that Michele Obama is spending more than other first ladies on vacations at a time when middle class people are suffering, then she should stop. This does not seem like a presidential scandal worthy of inclusion in your list of reasons Republicans are right and Democrats are wrong, which appears to be the premise of your first post. You should know not to mention vacations in comparing Dem and Repub presidents, if you are at all concerned - as you claim - about facts.
4) Volenteer some of your time. I do. What can you say?
Again, there is a role for individual action and a role for government. I'm still waiting for your facts...because this is a huge loser for you. You want to talk about the historical role of government in society? You want to talk about the role of government in a mixed market?
5) Conservatives give more to charity to the liberals - FACT! - Rasmussen
Did your private school not teach you to cite your sources? Tisk tisk...and by cite I mean provide a link or a title or something that would allow everyone to evaluate for themselves. I guess spelling was not high on the list either.
Sorry folks you guys were sold Obama by a nice smile and some flashy things.... And look what we all have now.... The worst President in History
OK now I know you aren't for real. Your initial statement railed against everyone for not using facts while promising that you - with help from your private school education - would enlighten us. Then you used a few very basic facts in support of innuendo and some outrageous conclusions.
Whatever facts you presented have either been debunked or shown as supporting fantastic conclusions and/or innuendo, which is no conclusion at all.
You have an entirely too favorable opinion of your ability to express the basis for any clear thinking you may possess.
Lets stick to the FACTS! Which Party has been trying to cut funding for Vet Care and Vet family programs? I will give you a clue it starts with a G.
As for Big Government, Please! Again stick to the FACTS! Which Party has led the largest increases in Government over the last 30 years! Same CLUE, THINK hard, G....G!
And yes progressive do believe the Government has a major roll in helping those in OUR SOCIETY that have served and are serving with dignity. It is called Patriotism and being moral!
As for Charitable giving, their are interesting numbers when you take giving to Religious organizations out of it! Not all "charitable" giving actually helps those in need! Republicans feed HUGE sums into Anti-Choice "Charities" but many of us don't really care to call that charitable.
Further my charitable activities are far more involved than simply writing a check now and again. Volunteering to tutor and mentor active duty soldiers children does not get registered on my tax returns but my guess is that it has a pretty immediate impact on the handful of families we are involved with.
Organizing holiday food and toy drives for active duty families does not get registered on my tax returns but I have seen some tears and smiles that tell me the impact is pretty immediate.
Last I think most Historians would probably debate you on the worst President in History bit! GW Bush seems to have that title wrapped up pretty tight! I think Dubyas Christmas card to the TPGOP should read, "Sorry I screwed @!$%# up so bad, but thanks for blaming it on the Black Guy!"
I work at a mental health hospital in the seattle area that also serves youth and adolescents. I can say almost universally, the children of combat veterans have signicant violence as part of their histories. Some of the worst cases of physical abuse have been from veteran families. Just another generation that grows up thinking war and battle are normal expected parts of daily life. No wonder we can't seem to stop finding wars to fight...it's easier than settling the war in the home. Very sad.
How much did this study cost? Kids of combat veterans and veterans of multiple deployments are always affected negatively (with a few exceptions). Dad or Mom may never come back, if they come back they may never be the same, they may have gone 2,3,4 or more times. Of course the kids are affected. All branches of military need to address the situation or the kids will be even more damaged. This is part of the "real" "human" cost of war. After sending my son to Iraq twice, I can't listen to the Star-Spangled Banner without choking up, and I sob when I hear the song American Soldier and he returned safely with only a minor case of kidney failure from a "virus". And I am a grown up military spouse.
I would like to see the same study done on or with the children of; Policemen, Highway Patrolmen, Prison Guards, FBI, ATF, Homeland Security, Football Players and Union Members...
I bet you would see twice as many bullies and children who tend towards violence as Combat Veterans......
Or perhaps, Eddie, you fail to understand that when people are in the business of killing other people (the job of the military) they can unintentionally pass on that value to their children. The jobs you mention do not go into other countries with the objective of killing people. The military does.
Rather misleading in my opinion to be lumping getting into a fight with being in a gang. Being the younger sister of a Vietnam vet I racked up a few fights when the vocal bullies started the "everyone knows navy guys are gay" "so your brother is one of those baby killers in Nam" the list goes on and each one I trounced had it coming and then some. I can't imagine the big mouths have changed much since I was in school.
So how do you explain the kids that are in gangs and get in fights who DON'T have a parent who is deployed. Statistics are a wonderful tool for dealing with many things but not social issues. Too many variables.
Actually it makes sense. The job of the military is to kill people. It's what they are trained to do. So, of course, some are going to pass on that value to their children. Hopefully, unintentionally. When you show by example that killing people is OK, your children will pick up on that. It's sad that humans have come to this..
Wrong.. the job of the military is to kill the enemy. Killing a fellow soldier is not acceptable. Killing civilian, is not acceptable. Wife beating is not acceptable. abusing your children is not acceptable.
If these moral infractions get back to command, a soldier can and often is disciplined - for things going wrong in his family. They are kind of a closed community and little escapes notice. You don't stay in the military very long with out structure in your life. knowing when to it on and off is a valued trait in military familes.
I have never met a combat vet who didn't come home unchanged. Correction: some did come home unchanged from before their deployments, but they were messed up to begin with. NOW: about their kids. Regardless of the popular propaganda of today, there is still a negative conotation attached to being the child of a combat GI. The 70's/Vietnam stereotypes still exist. Plus, "were's your daddy/mommy? Afghanistan/Iraq/where ever. Oh, a solidier. The kid feels different, an outsider. He/she gets treated differently, or at least feel so. He or she doesn't feel like they belong, so some become beligerent to assert their right to exist. They fight.
It doesn't really take a PhD in Psych/Soc to see this; just be a former combat GI with kids.
Strange.. people who have a serious occupation seem to have a tendency to raise children who are serious. Who'da thunk it?
I was raised in a military family, we had a somewhat strict upbringing. You were expected to be honest, truthful, obedient, as well as standing up for yourself and willing to take responsibility for your actions. Military "Brats" can be very respectful, as long as the rules are fair, set out logically and enforce equally. Unfortunately, when I was a kid - the civilian schools tended to take sides.
We were punished, loss of privleges, if we started a fight. But were expected to defend ourselves and our siblings from bullies ... no exceptions.
Yes, it takes two to fight, but only one idiot to start one.
There has been a terrible shortage of therapist for military families to help them deal with the problems caused by deployment. The parent left at home is trying to do everything and often the children have no place to vent the anger they feel so they are involved in fights and such. And the GOP wants to slash and burn the budgets for Vets and their families!
Why should the GOP 1%ers care, those fighting for the USA are usually working class anyhow!
We need to start taking care of our Vets and their Families!
Now that, Flash7, is beautiful.
"You 'need help' for calling out Republicans for causing the problem because you aren't out donating your own time and/or money to mop it up".

What? Gangs are supposed to be restricted to minorities?

Union members? Seriously? You don't really understand personality types, do you.
Or perhaps, Eddie, you fail to understand that when people are in the business of killing other people (the job of the military) they can unintentionally pass on that value to their children. A fight is a far cry from being in a gang.
So how do you explain the kids that are in gangs and get in fights who DON'T have a parent who is deployed. Statistics are a wonderful tool for dealing with many things but not social issues. Too many variables.
This "study" sounds like a lot of anti-military garbage.

Fred,
The answer is mentoring, those of us that have been through it with our own families need to be reaching out to these families now!
It's called genetics. It's in the blood.
Strange.. people who have a serious occupation seem to have a tendency to raise children who are serious. Who'da thunk it?
