To Americans, the use of the word "scheme" often implies something negative and sneaky, like a Ponzi scheme. However, in the U.K., the word "scheme" can simply be a neutral description of a plan or program.
That's why it's amusing in this story where the diets and weight loss organizations are called "schemes," sounding like they're involved in a money-making plot that's known not to work.
Winston Churchill once called the US and the UK "Two countries separated by a common language". Many words not only have different meanings in the US and UK, but are also spelled and/or pronounced differently thus adding to the confusion and/or embarrassment.
I wonder where the figures are showing obesity having the greatest pressure on healthcare. How does it stack up against STD's? One is obvious, the other not?
I love Weight Watchers. Why? I can eat what I LOVE. None of this "stop eating red meat", "stop eating bread", "stop all desserts". Weight Watchers teaches you how to monitor how much you eat, it does not dictate WHAT you eat. That's real life, long-term. And that is why Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem, and your doctor fail time and again.
The real issue is keeping the weight off. I recall a large study done in the 1990s where the very best weight loss methods still only had 1 out of 15 people keeping the weight off for over 2 years.
I'm about 100 lbs overweight, and have taken that extra weight off 3 times in my life. Each time, I went through a miserable couple of years losing it, and then 3-4 years later I was fat again.
When there's improvement in maintaining one's desired weight, maybe I'll try again. But for now, they've shown on fMRI machines that overeating works like an addiction. Well the only way we know to handle addiction is to quit, completely. But you can't quit food. Ask any ex-smoker how long they'd last if, 3 times every day, they had to take one puff. That's what dieting is like for me.
Yes, Keith, you are right...the real issue is keeping the weight off. That will happen when you realize that the things you did to lose the weight each time (you say 3 times) must become part of you FOREVER. In other words, those changes must be for a lifetime. As Arrive-1 says, you CAN eat what you want. There is NO DEPRIVING of what you like. However, you must understand when you can have it, how much you can have, meaning portion control. And just maybe, there must be some things you can never have IF you want to maintain your weight loss.
Less you think I don't know what I'm talking about, I lost 35 lbs in 1982 (yes, I said 1982) and have kept it off. There are some foods I do not have, and some I have only when I eat out. And, I am also a "retired" Weight Watchers leader. As a Lifetime member, I still weigh in once a month. I do that for me, because I know I need to do that to keep me on the straight and narrow. If you do the math, that is almost 30 years of monthly weigh-ins.
You have got to want it badly enought for yourself to make the life changes required. I hope for the sake of your health you will do it. Good Luck!
What the study proves is that science has been destroyed by fraud, politics, and media mis-reporting. That is pretty well known in the scientific community not funded by socialist corrupt politicians. It is scary. Fortunately, some teachers in grade schools are teaching the kids to never cite a news source to support a fact. Yes, our kids are being taught the truth. The news media is incompetent, biased, and untruthful.

I wouldn't go quite that far, but much of what's going on in the media today is all thanks to the repeal of the Fairness Doctrine. That opened the door to corporate takeover of the media in this country and allowed media outlets like News Corp., and yes I'm including MSNBC here too among others, to become little more than shills for their owners' political views.
How did people expect doctors to help them loose weight? Medical students don't receive lectures on nutrition....duh! Sure we can cut you open and locate your ligament of trietz or your ligamentum arteriosum, but we have absolutely no clue what diet will help you loose weight. Glad folks are finally figuring this out.

I started Weight Watchers for Men Online 7 weeks ago and have lost 13 pounds. I'm a believer. It's all about the food and portions.
Why did they waste all this money on a study. In British socialized medicine, anything involving less medical care is vastly superior.

It works better because permanent change can come only for within.

I believe in weight watchers instead of doctors because it gives permanent effect without any problem .
