In fact, women in the military who are sexually harassed are up to four times as likely to develop PTSD as women exposed to a traumatic event in combat, according to a 2009 study in the journal Law and Human Behavior. Those researchers found that experiences of sexual harassment were significantly correlated with PSTD symptoms in 450 women who were interviewed. The link held even after the researchers took into account previous psychological distress and trauma.
So getting slapped on the butt is four times as traumatic as watching your buddy get his/her head blown off and being pinned down by enemy fire in a ditch next to his/her twitching body? This is a slap in the face to anyone who has experienced the horrors of real combat.
Stop training women to feel like victims and they will stop being victims.
Stop minimizing bad male behavior. Sexual harassment is 'soft' problem that, as we clearly see with your comments, is often trivialized yet has life long consquences larely because of attitudes like yours. Two wrongs doesn't make anyone right.
all a woman has to do to ruin mans life is mention the phrase"sexual harrasment".most companys will simply get rid of the man without even verifing the womans claim.
Wrong, most companies put it on the woman and imply she did something wrong or that it's her problem. If administrators do get involved they tend to sweep everyone under the carpet as a case of he said-she said. But it doesn't sound like you've been on the receiving end of this kind of behavior either.
No, all a woman has to do is report a man in the company who is senior to her for sexual harrassment and SHE'S the one who's out the door so fast her head spins with no hope of a decent job reference from that place.
It's so common and widespread that it isn't until you sit people down and ask them to think of specific instances that it becomes so clear how common it is.
I think what this article highlights well is that there's not enough support (institutional or social) after an incident occurs and not enough teaching before incidents ever occur.
Have not had to deal with "sexual harassment" because I went into a field heavily dominated by other women. But I have certainly had to deal with unfair supervisory work situations which were clearly harassment. One boss was so bad that when she suddenly "retired" there were celebratory parties.
Harassment is harassment! It is no respecter of persons. Anytime you are treated unfairly, bullied, threatened by a superior, you are being harassed. When it involves men and women, sexual innuendos are just another means of harassment.
OK, so SEX is a hot topic. How much difference is there really whether the harassment is sexual or not? What we need, is zero tolerance for any kind or harassment. The misuse of authority to make another person miserable should bring swift and severe consequences. Employers who do not act against their management in harassment situations should be fined and/or imprisoned. Treating people right should be the norm not the exception.
The problem with sexual harassment claims is that practically anything can be deemed sexual harassment. I for one am tired of women being willing participants, if not instigators, and then screaming harassment when they don't get what they want. This completely minimizes the legitimate claims. Women dress provocatively and then feel "harassed" when men "leer" at them. Isn't that why they dressed the way they did? If they are ignored, they're insulted. Please, as a female, I know this happens.
Also, some, not all, women want what they call equal treatment - they want to invade traditionally male-dominated jobs. Active combat, commentator's in men's locker rooms, etc. and then become offended when they are, in fact, treated like the men treat each other. What gives? They want to turn men into women but you can't have it both ways. When men act like the goons they can be, especially in those settings, why do the women get upset? I say let them have their domains where they can behave like neanderthals among themselves and get it out of their systems. Stay out, give them their space and maybe when they emerge they will act like the respectful men we want them to be. But we can't invade every nook and cranny of their lives and expect them to be on their best behavior. Are men permitted in women's locker rooms? Women's restrooms? etc. No. And I for one don't want them there. For goodness sakes, sometimes separate but equal is just right!
You bring to mind what is going on at Penn State right now, Abby.
Football, boys will be boys, all 12-year old boys like sex, just like 40 year old men do. Don't call the cops because you'll hurt the Football Program! Don't call the cops or child welfare because the victim should not have been there in the first place. Their parents should have known that putting young boys in the locker room with adult mentors would put them at risk for sexual exploitation.
Blame the victim, so grown men can do what they've always done, for 10,000 years.
All those boys must be lying, after all they went willingly and they didn't cry rape back then. Those poor coaches lives are ruined now, they are the real victims, right Abby?
In a way, it is very reassuring to read this article, i.e., that other people have also experienced a very strong reaction to this. I experienced some quite aggressive behavior on the part of a young guy, just out of college, on my last job, which would have or could have been easily construed as sexual aggresiveness. It caused me enough psychological distress to see a therapist for four months, but the distress continued for quite a long time after that, even after I left that job. Wondering if anyone else has experienced this male on male type of harrassment, which I have heard is not very common.
The definition of sexual harassment seems too broad. The article seems to say "Life" involves sexual harassment of one kind or another. Sure there is sexual harassment but many things in daily life experiences are not. In this article, every negative experience is sexual in nature.
Yeah I know the feeling.
When that beautiful redhead boss of mine used and abused me then left me for another worker.. I got depressed too.
Pics or it didn't happen.

But I don't think the victims killed themselves in this case.
Whatever happened to women standing up for themselves? Punch, scream, and make yourself heard, at that moment! Don't wait 14 years to go by!

When your buddy got his head blown off.......it was the enemy, right?

Leaving HIM free to move onto his next victim.
You're so right Terelyn. It happened to me. And the harrasser is llikely a predator/hypersexual who can't control himself.

Wow, thank you for a good and sane post. What you said is true.
Bullying whether sexual or not needs to end now!
