The Childrens' Health Insurance Program, also known as CHIP, was passed in 1997 as a ten-year program. It was reauthorized in 2007 by President Bush until 2009, when it was reauthorized again and expanded by President Obama. It will be due for expiration or reauthorization in 2013.
It is funded by federal taxes on tobacco. Smoke a cigarette, help a child. Thank a smoker. They're saving our kids.

Please note that in Kansas the number of insured children has actually declined. This is the state in which the God-fearing Governor Sam Brownback - a staunch pro-lifer - has done everything possible to deny women the right to control their own bodies.

It must make the collective GOP stomach churn to see a report like this. After all, these healthy children might grow up and be appreciative of the health care they received when young. We can't have them thinking they live in a country that cares, can we?
The CHIPS program is an "Opt-In" program and requires matching funds from each state. Many states did not opt-in to the expanded program.
Um, did either one of you notice where it said the number of uninsured adults has gone UP? Yeah, I'm glad for the kids, but when I consider that our insurance premiums were jacked by 30% this year alone, and that Obamacare was cited as the reason for it, it makes me freakin' angry. All he did was give the medical industry an open door to raise rates to intolerable levels, and we'll HAVE to pay it, or pay a big fine. Yeah, thanks a lot Dems, you really did us a favor.

We're self-employed, and I have affordable insurance for the first time in ten years because of the Affordable Care Act. My mother is losing her insurance due to divorce, and will be able to get affordable insurance that wouldn't have been available to her before the Affordable Care Act. My daughter's and husband's premiums have gone up, but at about the same rate they were rising before the Act. I'm sorry your experience has been so negative, but my family and I do, sincerely, thank the Dems.
When my husband lost his job, I can thank the Dems for helping my kids be insured with MassHealth (Gov. Patrick)... in fact, our entire family. Anyone who would attempt a repeal of affordable healthcare act, or not be in support of a universal health care plan for the U.S. is, simply put, immoral.

Insurance premiums have gone up no more this year than they have on average every single year for the last 30+ years. Was Obama Care in effect through some time warp for the last 30 years ? The number of kids that are being supported by the taxpayer (Medicaid) has gone up and you libs are cheering about this? I would be happier to see more kids insured under private plans (via their parents pocket) than being asked to pay for them.
The article mentions Florida which is were I live. Our budget is in tatters so adding more children to Medicaid is just going to bankrupt the state faster. Why don't we offer food stamps to everyone making less than 100K and the Dems can then brag that we hve the lowest poverty rates also? After all, it is just other people's money.
karen-545203.......and that is exactly what ObamaCare is designed to facilitate. The program is designed for people who were previously kept out of the Health Insurance Market to be able to BUY health insurance that they previously were not allowed to BUY because of pre-existing conditions. When more adults are allowed to buy insurance, their kids will also be insured under these same policies.

Karen - Perhaps if Congress would do something to help with a jobs plan, more people would be at work resulting in more people able to provide health care for their children. I'm sure there are plenty of public works projects in Florida, just like the rest of the country, the could use some upgrading/improvements.

Are you concerned hardworking people are paying for your health services? This is the way socialism works. Income re-distribution. Demand obama do something so the private sector could create jobs. When you have a job compliments of the people (businessmen) obama want to tax to death, then you would be able to buy your own insurance, perhaps including your family's.

Sailor, you state the Republican position well. Children who are born to poverty have no right to receive one dime from the rich country club set. If they die for lack of health insurance, so what? That's the way God intended it. The rich create jobs. They need caddies at the golf course, and maids to clean their houses and butlers to answer the doorbell. The spending needs to be cut. We need a bigger military so that we can invade more countries, and more police to keep the unwashed minions out of our neighborhoods (except the ones who work here; we are the job creators.) Cut the budget. Stop paying for programs for children, and cut those old people off of Social Security and Medicare. We don't need them. Restore this country to greatness.

Just like our Federal Budget is Out Of Control, so is Medical Costs..... 1/4 of my pay goes for Health Insurance yes that is High but it needs to be to cover the High Cost of Medical Treatment..... Time for the NOT FOR PROFITS to get back in the Health Care field.....

We need a colossal investigation into rising costs of health care.
Only when we have that kind of data can we then begin to write laws and regulations which address the specific "hot spots" of fraud and abuse, and bring down these costs.

But it's also a shame that Mitt Romney, who accomplished so much with the Massachusets health plan, is now running away from his accomplishments. He just brought health care to a ton of kids, and the only thing he can think of is "repealing Obamacare." That really sucks.
TurtleneckandChain...actually this has little to do with the Affordable Health Care Act. When that Act kicks in in a few years it should have the effect of covering more children because it will allow more people to buy ( and pay for ) family insurance who are now blocked from buying insurance, and will force others to buy insurance, thus more children will be covered.

This is just the kind of news republicans were afraid would happen. That is why they have tried so hard to repeal Obama's health care initiative. When citizens realize the good it will do, how it will reduce health care costs, make us a healthier society, make health care more accessible for all Americans they will support Obama. the past health care system was broken. It needed to be fixed. Obama has made good start and if he gets reelected we may have an opportunity to have quality health care for a long time. What is the republican plan. I do not qualify for any coverage we make 5000 gross to much to qualify for anything in OK. I pay 400 a month for daycare and 600 a month for health insurance so you do the math I only make 11.00 an hour. I don't get food stamps or any breaks. I just got insurance for my son through my employer and was told my premium for him is more expensive because I am a woman-my coworker has a cheaper premium for his kids because he is a man. There is a serious problem when my health insurance premiums are more expensive than my rent and its because of my gender.
Too bad the Republicons want to repeal Obamacare, stripping away healthcare for these million kids. But as long as the Repubs have healthcare, why should they care about anyone else?
