Here's a big DUH!!! on this article. Pesticides are in everything and with GMO products from plants designed to produce their own insecticides, the amount of pesticides found in people is way up. Thank Monsanto for that! The placentas at birth are found to have 150 different toxic chemicals in them and we wonder why children with autism or learning disabilities have gone over the past twenty years from 1 in 150,000 to now anywhere from 1 in 150 to 1 in 35 or even 1 in 8 depending on how the study defines the disorder. Our monarch butterflies are just about gone because they won't eat GMO corn, and now they are all excited about GMO mosquitos. When the mosquito population is gone and the bats and birds that feed on them go the whole ecological system collapses. Just sweet!! What are the idiots thinking?!??!?!?!?
What? GMO crops are designed to be resistant to pests via biological mechanisms, which greatly reduce the amount of chemical pesticide applied. Take the Bt trait...completely nontoxic to all vertibrates and only affects a handful of insect species. That's simple biology. You can thank Monsanto, and Syngenta, dozens of small biotechs, and hundreds (if not thousands) of researchers in collegiate agricultural departments around the US.
Interestingly you use autism rates to "prove" that GMO crops have caused a rise in autism over the past 20 years. However, you yourself admit that the numbers change due to the "definition," which is probably the only real change that has taken place. Bt, the compound produced by many of today's pest-resistant GMO crops, had been used since 1935. Where was the spike in autism then? Glyphosate, or Round Up, was first used in the 1970's, four decades ago. There is no reason to believe any of these compounds have contributed to a spike in autism in the past 20 years.
When people who do not have a grasp on biology or genetics make outlandish claims, the only thing I can say is "what are YOU thinking?!?!?!?!?!!?"
The idiots are wondering how much money they can squeeze out of the volatility in the OJ market like the Duke brothers tried in "Trading Places," who have been replaced by the Koch brothers in real life.
It is BEYOND me, why Meat raised in Mexico is cheaper than the United States and also fruit from Questionable countries is cheaper than United States. You would think with the price of oil, shipping perishableS all OVER THE WORLD would offest the cost. Why don't they keep their own produce for personal consumption, and WHY DOESN'T THE US??? And if we import so much FOOD from these questionable countries - IT ALL BETTER BE TESTED for pesticides, prior to any AMERICAN'S eating it!!!!
Because those countries take advantage of cheap labor and lack of any regulatory oversight. So their prices are cheaper. If you want costs to drop, then that's what you have to do here in the US too.
Problem with keeping everything in the US is that our land is not meant to grow many types of fruits, veggies, especially in yields high enough to feed our growing population. By the same token, there is demand in other countries for crops they do not grow, crops like corn which do very well in the US.
Not that it matters; it's still a contaminant, but it is a FUNGICIDE not a PESTICIDE.
"Fears that the U.S. might ban imports of orange juice from Brazil drove orange juice futures to an all-time high on Tuesday as health regulators began testing all incoming shipments for traces of an illegal fungicide called carbendazim."
"The pesticide is banned in U.S. citrus but it is used on orange trees in Brazil to fight mold."
What, we no longer have fruit trees here in America?? Now we need to outsource our juice industry too?
--Oh, it's cheaper for the corporations to import concentrates from China, Mexico and Brazil -- then mix it (contaminates and all) with 1% Florida juice to say "Product of USA."
To HELL with our CEOs... They are simply lying, greedy, thieving fascists. They are killing us!
If this stuff is in the juice, it is in the fruit. Buy local and buy organic. Try buying in season fruits and veggies from your state.
It seems we are far too separate from our food supply. Time to take control and vote with your dollars. Organic will eventually be similar in price to mass produced produce if we choose to purchase it.
Media hacks. Carbendazim is a fungicide not a pesticide. I swear, Yahoo actually has better coverage on this than MSNBC. The amount is supposedly marginal, at 10 parts per billion but still above FDA guidelines. The suspected juice in question is from Brazil which is about 10% of out imported orange juice, 90% of our orange juice is grown domestically. I would be more worried about the Tropicana issue of storing juice in huge vats for up to a year.
MmmMmmBeer, with all due respect if you have a scientific mind you might want to do more independent research instead of merely believing what Monsanto and the FDA tell you. The Bt gene inserted haphazardly with a "DNA gun" creates a plant in which every cell is made to produce pesticide, and is 3,000-5,000 times more potent than the natural bacterial spray used of old. This method of insertion is not an exact science either and can result in other (potentially undesirable) traits of the plant being "turned on" (such as an allergen). Furthermore it's been demonstrated that micro-RNA can be absorbed and passed into our intestines from ingesting such, and it persists in our gut flora to be reproduced. It's the furthest thing from "non-toxic" and is now been measured in high concentrations in our soil, water and air (yes, air) as well as the human body. You are also incorrect in your assumption that less herbicides are used on such plants. It's been discovered that farmers now find they have to apply more and more chemicals, and genetically modified crops are becoming sickly with "plant AIDS" (suppressed immune system of the plant). Last but not least, Dr. Don Huber has discovered a strange species of microbe "new-to-science" that is destroying our plants, soil and microbial ecosystems even further. Many GM foods have been banned by other countries all around the world because the science shows such foods cause severe organ damage and cancers in laboratory animals. The FDA is currently being run by ex-Monsanto employees. We are the guinea pigs now and have been for the past decade and a half. Deregulation of GE alfalfa has the potential to destroy our entire food supply. Bees are highly sensitive creatures help pollinate plants so they may become food. Cross-contamination of this "alien" DNA has predictably undesirable consequences.
Weather it is safe or not can only be answered by the Lobbyists and the Media ?

Fungicides kill fungus, molds. Pesticides kill pests ... insects.
Reuters: Get your story straight.
i love orange juice, its part of my daily diet :P

Not good to mess with big business (republicans) re tainted OJ from Brazil.

We've been drinking orange juice for years. stop scaring people with over-blown 'reports'.
Didja know: only 2% of pesticides on plants are "inorganic"? The rest are produced naturally by the plant. Enjoy that organic-nuts.
