This probablly won't help my kids (I've got 6 and 4 that I know have dsylexica) but it will be great for parents to finally have a test that teachers will actually have to pay attention too. It also may make it impossible for states to ignore. My state doesn't classify dsylexica as a disability. It had made it very difficult to get my kids the help they needed.
The reason your state doesn't classify "dyslexia" as a disability is because it is a symptom rather than a cause. Dyslexia is a reading dysfunction. In many cases (like mine) the cause is mixed dominance. Most people easily identify their dominant hand--right or left, although a small number are ambidextrous, but they may not realize is that we also have a dominant eye, ear, and foot. Most people's dominance is aligned on one side or the other, with right (handed), being the most common. The right-dominant eye sends information to the left brain hemisphere, which is generally where language, logic, and analytical thinking are centered. The right brain focuses more on emotions, color and creativity. Visual language information sent to the wrong side is harder to decode, so the person has reading difficulties. In many cases, covering the dominant eye with a patch may result in dramatic improvements in reading speed and comprehension. (BTW, lefties operate the same, only the brain task areas are reversed.)

Sorry--The sentence should read: "...but they may not realize that we also have a dominant eye..." I'm also blessed with OCD. ;-)
Dyslexia is not a disease. Editor needs to be more careful.
Dyslexia is not a disease (paragraph2). Editor and author need to be a bit more detailed in review.
