Komen will never get a dime from me or most of the women I know after this. I was thinking about doing the walk, but I won't support an organization that is this hypocritical. You either support women's health or you don't. They obviously don't. They now have people on their board that are rabidly anti-abortion and this is the result. It's fine if you want to be against abortion, but the money they gave to PP didn't go to abortions, it went to breast cancer screenings. And abortions only account for 3% of the services PP provides anyway. Way to throw out the baby with the bathwater, morons! Komen has made a huge mistake and shown that in the end they only care about politics and destroying abortions rights at literally any cost. I'll bet Susan G. Komen is rolling over in her grave right now. This is just sickening and disgusting that a charity that has a distinguished record would stoop so low and ruin it's reputation like this. It's just sad.
I am thrilled, however, that so many are now donating to PP! Keep it up. We can make up what they will lose from Komen pulling their support and show Komen that women will not go down without a fight! We WILL have our rights and money does indeed talk! Komen will pay for this decision, as they should. In fact, this could be one of the best things that could ever happen to PP in terms of good publicity for all of the health services that they provide. Wouldn't that be the best outcome--Komen is shamed as they should be and PP gets all kinds of money that they need as they should! That would just be some great poetic justice, wouldn't it? :o)
This is what happens when far right bigots make their way into an organization. They pollute the environment with their bible politics and divide people.
What a shame. I have previously never donated to planned parenthood. But I just did today.
How ludicrous, you truly believe that the largest abortion provider in the Country only performs abortions as 3% of its business. Furthermore, abortion is not about women's health. It's about destroying the life of another entirely individual human being. And, just to be clear, Komen hasn't gotten a dime from me, since I found out they funded PP. Now I will able to support their work again. I'm certain there are many more out there, like me, who will more than pick up the slack for those misguided individuals, such as yourself.
It is about women's health -- if you cannot risk a pregnancy because it is LIFE-THREATENING it is about protecting a woman's life. Of course, some folks don't care if a woman dies. Or is a woman's life worth less than a fetus?
Well, right, good for you. You do that. Keep supporting an organization that obviously doesn't have the health and needs of the poorest and neediest women amongst us in mind. And you can continue to do that on an increasingly alone basis as I have heard more people - men and women - saying that they will no longer support Komen, will not contribute to their runs or fundraisers, and will, instead, start sending their donations directly to PP. And my husband and I will be among them, my friend. Good luck with that!
NO right, I don't believe it, I KNOW it. It's one of those FACT thingies that people like you don't seem to get. And you seem so certain that there are many people like you. REALLY?? Have you read the comments here? Did you read an article about Komen getting an increase in donations today? No? Hmm, maybe all of those things you're so certain about are just wrong, including thinking that a clump of cells is the same as a real, live, breathing, living WOMAN. Those FACT thingamabobs can be so pesky, can't they right??
Donate your money to whomever you want. That's your right. But don't think that you're in the majority in any way. And know this: just because you believe something doesn't make it true.
PP prevents far more abortions than it provides. It's primary mission is providing birth control - starting from a time when to even talk about birth control was illegal.
But then most anti-abortion extremists don't think birth control should be legal either. My guess from reading the comments sections of every rag from Huffpost to Fox News is that Komen made a mistake - and the next bunch of 5K runs are going see a lot of drop off. Who would want to be associated with a bunch of misogynist nutcases who want to see every woman's sexuality controlled by someone else?
News is now starting to spread about Komen's ties ti big Pharm, their investments in taxol and their attempts to LIMIT other research into real cures. They're a quarter BILLION dollar corporation who gives less than 30% of the dollar you give to research. The rest of your dollar goes to raising money, advertising, suing other charitable organizations that dare to use the color pink or the word "cure" in theor advertising. Komen is the Monsanto of the breast cancer charity industry. THEY are the ones who should be investigated.
we live in a sad country, when so many of u guys/gals think anything that helps u is bad. unemployment insurance-get rid of it, welfare/foodstamps-get rid of it, and u wanna claim to know the mercy of Jesus Christ?
It's like the country is coming together to give these right-wing lunatics, Fox News, and the religious extremists a giant middle finger. Hearing about the spike in gifts has partially restored my faith in humanity.
However, I doubt they will get this simple message: MIND YOUR OWN F***ING BUSINESS AND STAY THE F*** OUT OF OUR BODIES, OUR BEDROOMS, AND OUR PERSONAL LIVES.
"How ludicrous, you truly believe that the largest abortion provider in the Country only performs abortions as 3% of its business."
Planned Parenthood in not a business.... and its so its "doings" are reported. Anyone who wants to see the truth can easily, check PP out. Their "abortion" statistics are readily available on-line. Planned Parenthood provides counselling and regular check-ups for women (including breast exams and PAP smears for all) as most of their "business."
I know the Vine is an "Opinion site, open to "anyone"; that doesn't mean any (fill-in-_______'s) "opinion" is equal to informed opinions.
The idea that Komen would use an obviously politically motivated investigation as an excuse to cut off funding is laughable. Anyone with a brain can see that the investigation of Planned Parenthood is being conducted by a political hack for political reasons, not because of anything wrong at PP. I think that Komen is in for a huge shock, and a huge drop in donations as a result of this decision. Those that support abortion rights are a far larger group in this country then those who do not, particularly among women. Komen has just alienated their biggest source of donations and will pay the price. There are plenty of other organizations for people to give to with the same mission who have not surrendered to the extremist political hacks. And just for the record, I am pro-choice, but still feel that abortion should not be used as birth control or for other dubious reasons like selecting the sex of the child, but only in cases of rape, incest, or threat to the health of the mother. I am just evolved enough not to try and force my personal beliefs on others.
So I want to see the names of any other group cut off based on this same policy... I would wager there is only ONE. The fact that ONE congressman can start an investigation (remember, unlike the justice system, you don't have to have any real facts to start an investigation) and that causes the cut off???
The fact the newly hired republican who vowed to defund PP has nothing to do with this??? Yeah, in a pigs eye. I have never donated to PP, not because I don't agree with them, but due to apathy. That changed with this story.... donating right after I finish this post.
Not only is it time to stop giving donations to Komen but to boycott them entirely.
There are many other organizations that do more good than Komen Donate your $ to scientific cancer research and PP.
This attack against women was lead by a REPUBLICAN Jjust REMEMBER THAT when you vote as the GOP would like to have all women barefoot & pregnant in the kitchen all the time.
Hey you got to remember any time a Republican gets involved you are dealing with an ignoramus and an American Taliban. It is the right wing that denies science they don’t believe in stem cell research, they don’t believe in evolution, they don’t believe in global warming they don’t believe in alternative energy in short they don’t believe in science or reason. They wallow in ignorance and superstition. They are the same group who would still has us believing that the Earth is flat, the universe revolves around the earth and burning witches (women after being tortured)at the stake
The last time I saw the figures for the head of Komen which was some time ago - was being paid over $460,000. Almost a 1/2 mill to just ONE of a massive amount of execs and board members as Komen is top heavy in in 'paid' people -- compensation/administrative costs. Mighty rich considering that's donations paying each and every one of the liars. It's not political -- BS.
Komen has exposed themselves as the hyprocrites they are in that they continue to grab money from a long list that is being investigated and they are continuing to grant to some others that are under investigation. Komen has cost themselves millions in lost donations by way of the Race for the Cures that are being cancelled -- I got notice of 5 cancellations today. Doesn't take long before the bottom falls out as they have made this political but spew and attempt to spin it. Komen is the ones that are the idiots. My company fundraiser in 2 months will be a minimum of $100,000 to PP. Komen 'used' to get it for over a decade. They can burn in he|| now. An apology and return of the grant to PP -- won't work. Komen screwed themselves permanently,
Here is the list of investigations -- those who Kormen kisses their a*s for funds and also ones they are still providing grants to. If Kormen was truthful, (ROFLAO - true & Kormen in same sentence -- what a joke), they ALL those under investigation would not receive grants but it's only PP.
KFC is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them Ford is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them Bank of America is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them American Airlines is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them Caterpillar is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them Nestle is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them Egglands Best is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them Yoplait is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them Dell is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them Major League Baseball is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them Lowes is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them Merck is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them
AND
ASCO is under investigation...Komen gives $ to them AACR is under investigation...Komen gives $ to them WHO is under investigation...Komen gives $ to them
In fact EVERY corporate partner checked except Hallmark Cards Stores was under some sort of investigation and every organization they gave grants to was as well.
Lou, grow up and do your research. No tax dollars are used for pp abortions. They don't even actually DO the abortions, they refer.... You HAVE to stop listening to Limburger and the others...
I apologize. Was editing last post and it posted anyway.
By law, federal funding cannot be allocated for abortions,[44] Did you cons even know Nixon help come up with the funding for PP?
Planned Parenthood is the largest provider of reproductive health services in the United States, which include contraceptives and abortions, among other services.[3][4] Contraception accounts for 35% of PPFA's total services and abortions account for 3%; PPFA conducts roughly 300,000 abortions each year.[5][6][7]
Koman has the right to donate to whom and where they feel their money is best spent. Simple as that. They receive their money through many avenues, including walking for cures, races etc, and are one of the best run charities around. If they see an avenue that better fits their end goal, then they have the right to move their money towards that goal.
And all the people that today are donating to PP as a result of Komen pulling their resources, also have that right.
Politically motivated or not, Komen is a good charity and concept, and again they are giving away money, and have the right to direct it to where the deem best fits. If that prevents other people from participating in their events, again those people rights.
cdahl -- They are so 'good' that for a grant worth under a milllion -- they've lost millions. Let me just say it -- they've actually shown how stunned and stupid they are.
I've been networking since this was first announced - yesterday. MY company is permanently withdrawing any association with Komen. Our annual donation was a minimum of $100,000. When we hold our fundraised, funds will be provided to PP.
The phone calls, email listings and communications made yesteday and today - I have signed documents confirming from various corporations I work with that have 'confirmed' withdrawal of over $6 MILLION donated annually to Komen - and more to be received as various corporations have committees meeting to decide and have promised to advise me within the next week. The heads of these corporations that have confirmed their withdrawal, were outraged when the story broke and were provided details. It didn't take much to make a decision of their actions to withdraw any and all support to Komen.
Yes -- I'd say Komen's marketing plan was brilliant. I'm sure it won't be long before it's announced the head of Komen issues that phoney 'resignation' statement as truthfully == the Board will be saying "You're Fired".
The far left has been canonizing Planned Parenthood long enough. It was a major Eugenics organization in the 20s and 30s inspiring even Hitler in his race purity ideals. Margaret Sanger, the founder, said that she wanted to eliminate the "moron races". The IQ tests were developed with the ideal being white middle class culture and reactions, so blacks and other minorities didn't do well, as well as for the inferior educational systems they were put in, of course. PP is the Only organization that doesn't have to report rapes. They don't inform young women and girls about the possible dangers of abortion, and they were even found willing to support a prostitution group in an undercover operation, which was later disowned. Their former president was Mr Guttmacher, and the Guttmacher Institute still works to back them up, although they are billed by the (pro-abortion) press as "an independent study group". Science has said clearly that at Conception, a new human DNA comes into existence, and therefore it is a new living human being. Stop the hypocritical blotting out of that fact. That is not a Religious fact, it is a Scientific fact. As humans, we should respect human life at All stages, and No human is nor can become the Property of another!
Lou77777777, your title might as well be 666, etc. You are an uneducated, bigot who must sit all day and listen to faux entertainment or the likes of Rushy junky, Mr. No morals type of media twits. Hey, here's an idea for you. Guys, need to start using birth control, actually I'd like to see legislation passed to make it mandatory so you guys who get women pregnant, can't . Ain't no immaculate conceptions going on. Men need to stop treating women like second class citizens (your mommas need to be ashamed of you) and step up to the plate and when you impregnate a woman, pay for maternity care, marry her if chose, pay child support, and be there for as a role model for YOUR child. Perhaps a woman won't have to even contemplate having an abortion when men practice safe sex or are mandated to use birth control. Now think about these thoughts Lou 777777777, that is if you can think on your own without the venon spewed from faux media or right wing sheep.
Why are soooooooo many people all up in Planned Parent Hoods business? Why are soooo many "Americans" if you can call them that in the every-ones business who gets an abortion? They are NOT breaking the law weather you like it or not. Yet so called "Americans" wish to tell women what to do with there own bodies even in Rape or Incest and Molestation cases. Why is that? What is this DEEP seeded nature in folks to have a need to kill people over abortion? To terrorize them for following the law and MAKING what? MONEY.. ; ]
Its a business and all of you blowhards where ever you may be are STOPPING capitalism from happening. You are in the way of certified practicing DOCTORS making money. This is America we are a capitalistic democracy and yet fools such as Mr. Romney and Mr. Gingrich assume to tell Americans how they can make money even though the law is on the side of those participating in Abortion. How DARE you. How DARE you. You religious beliefs are being forced upon those who do not believe and wish to make money. I myself believe in God. But I am pragmatic enough to live in Americas reality and the fact is you should NEVER play with peoples money. If Wall street greed mortgage companies and banks can make money in dirty slimy ways then your all barking up the wrong tree.
meede1, "-- they've lost millions. Let me just say it -- they've actually shown how stunned and stupid they are. I've been networking since this was first announced - yesterday. MY company is permanently withdrawing any association with Komen. Our annual donation was a minimum of $100,000. When we hold our fundraised, funds will be provided to PP."
I don't get to post much anymore but wanted to make a note on this topic (then the haters can tell me to go away again).
I'm glad to see this because now I can start supporting Komen. I never understood the connection between Komen and PP -- why would Komen support an organization counterproductive to their own goals, since abortion is a large factor in the risk of abortion (plus there's a high correlation between abortion and suicide). But the PP true believers don't want to hear that; but I've seen the real statistics, not just the sanitized summaries, and I've also looked at the footnotes that show what data was excluded to doctor some studies' conclusions to pretend that these connections don't exist.
To me, PP and an safe abortion is a lie promoted by men that lets them be irresponsible and makes the women suffer the consequences.
It still doesn't change the fact that it is Komen's choice/decision. Komen can choose which organization they donate money to, just like your company did.
And I'm curious, would you be willing to let us know what company you work for, or clue us in on the companies that have pulled the 6M in funding for Komen?
Truth is this debate has been heating up for about a year now. It first started on the Rachel Maddow show about Planned Parenthood and Congress. It wouldn't surprise me at all if all of this propaganda is done by MSNBC. In fact, I think that most of these posts supporting PP are fake.
The fact of the matter is that PP can use the money they get for whatever they want. What I don't like is that how they can recieve govt. funds and continue to run the organization as if the govt. was their own private bank account. If choice means that much to women, let them separate the abortion services into another clinic. You'll find that many women would support PP if it only had services for birth control, std testing and cancer screenings.
Everyone knows that the only reason to go to PP is to get an abortion. You are full of crap if you think otherwise. Women everywhere can go to a free clinic and get exactly the same services as PP minus the abortions. Why don't you say what it really is: Govt. funded abortion clinic!
Oh, aren't you soo sweet with your little comment. You know, alcohol has a correlation with drunk driving, kills people through scirosis as well. Yet liquor stores pay the government taxes. ; ] And its legal, and even though MAAD rails against alcohol mothers still drink.
I do not understand why MOTHERS would support a beverage so counter productive to there cause but hey, money. And when theres money then money money cause money people to.
Abortion should simply become incorporated. Corporations are people to ya know. Then evangelicals will LOVE abortion as much a capitalistic Jesus because its corporate in nature. Which God obviously invented for greed. ;]
FYI.. .the breast cancer screenings performed at Planned Parenthood are not mammograms, or MRIs, or any other type of expensive procedure.
The breast cancer screenings performed at Planned Parenthood are breast exams. They are performed by a nurse, or nurse practitioner, physician's assistant, or doctor-- using their hands. It is the same breast exam that women can perform at home. It takes very little time. My DO's office performs mine every year... actually, the nurse practitioner does it. It's all part of my annual gyn exam.
So what is everyone up in arms about? They make it sound like women won't be getting mammograms at PP anymore. PP doesn't do mammograms. They just take the funds given to them for breast cancer and say the 2-3 minutes of the visit used to perform the breast exam cost $X dollars so that's where the money is going. It's a shell game ladies. I'm pro-choice, but I say if Komen doens't want their money to be used by an organization that performs abortions for profit, then that's Komen's right. Personally, I think Komen would be better off using that money to provide mammograms to women who have no insurance or can't afford them. If PP finds a lump, they don't send the woman on for a mammo and pay for it. They tell her she has a lump and that she needs to get a mammo. How she gets that mammo is her business.
Makes one wonder if breast cancer cares if a woman had or will have an abortion or not.....
By the way men can and do get cancer of the breast too....
Frankly Konen knew what they were doing and where they were going when they appointed that anti-abortion former Georia GOP gubenatorial candidate Karen Handel to the position of seniour vice president for Public Policy. They knew her politics already as she had apparently stated- even before she accepted the job - that she did not support Planned Parenthood and since then promised to eliminate funding for breast cancer and cervical cancer screening provided by Planned Parenthood.
So the use of the old PP under investigation by congress blah blah blah nonsense, was used as a way of cutting off funding.
It would not surprise me if that T'publicon congressman who started the whole PP investigation- which appears to be just hanging around going nowhere or investigated - was just a phoney ploy and a planned move to give Konen cover for what they intended to do, which is cut off funding to Planned Parenthood in the first place.
Wouldn't tell this organization the time of day much less give them a dime.
It never ceases to amaze me when some women work to deny other women their rights under the law. These T'publicon 'girls' are not the sort of women who would have protested to gain the right to vote back in the Women Sufferage days. LOL They are too busy looking for validation from big daddy. Then they have the audacity to have an original thought in their heads that was not put their by their man or the male member of their family.
And these T'publicons are the people who criticize others ethnicities who are not of their religiosity/faith who practice the same thing or repression of females that they do... ? LOL
How more two faced...... can these T'repcons people get?
I suppose we will find out if they get elected......Hmmm
unhappy says..."Everyone knows that the only reason to go to PP is to get an abortion. You are full of crap if you think otherwise. Women everywhere can go to a free clinic and get exactly the same services as PP minus the abortions. Why don't you say what it really is: Govt. funded abortion clinic!".... LIE!
To the contrary, you liar. Most of the people at PP are there to PREVENT pregnancy, and get testing services, treatment for std's and the like. Do not spread baseless right wing taliban LIES.
If you want to learn something interesting, take a look at Komen's financials at the close of their last fiscal year:
Revenue- $438,965,760
Cost just to run things:
Administrative Expenses- $159,851,465
Marketing- $83.213,138
Total- $243,064,603 or 57.88% of money spent; so is your money really going where you thought it was? So yes, you are reading it correct, less than half the money you provide goes to actually helping people.
So where does their money go:
Research- $75,301,537 or 17.1%
Treatment Services- $23,251,563 or 5.3%
Health Screening Services- $54,089,036 or 12.3%
Education Services- $181,092,283 or 41.2%
All this, while still being able to invest- $140,833,688
Finally, you don't have to worry about those running this NON-PROFIT organization, Here's some of the salaries being paid:
Hala Moddelmog, Chief Executive Officer & President—$456,437
Annetta Hewko, VP, Global Strategies & Programs—$343,013
I have had to go to Planned Parenthood in the past, when I had little money. I was not going for an abortion, I have never been pregnant ever. I went for basic women's medical care. I also saw many pregnant woman there who were getting some much needed pre-natal care. PP does not do abortions, they only refer woman to them. Goverment funds can not be used for abortion, per the Hyde admentment, of more than 30 years ago. The only reason the Republicon congress is going after PP if because he is anti-abortion, anti-choice reglious zealot.
They just take the funds given to them for breast cancer and say the 2-3 minutes of the visit used to perform the breast exam cost $X dollars so that's where the money is going. It's a shell game ladies.
Not entirely true. Yes, it's true they don't do mammograms (as they don't have the equipment to perform mammograms or employee radiologists that can interpret them). Yes, they perform these manual exams. HOWEVER, they also use the money to refer &, in some cases, help pay for mammograms for low income women at other facilities.
"We regret that these new policies have impacted some long-standing grantees, such as Planned Parenthood, but want to be absolutely clear that our grant-making decisions are not about politics," the Komen statement said.
Bullsh!t. It makes the grass grow green! Cow sh!t. It does the same d@mn thing! Bat sh!t is much like rat sh!t, and all of that sh!t reminds me of you.
Unhappy? You must be off your meds today..... you think most of the pro PP posts are fakes..?? what a laugh at YOUR expense. You have bought into the Right wingers take on PP and don't care to do the research. Of course Komen can choose who they fund. However to blatently lie about the reasons is what is hurting them. Not to mention the hypocrisy because above you will see a list of many companies under investigation they still accept money and grant money to.
To top this off, their overhead is so far above what a lot of the biggest charities are, it really shows the priorities.
Great post at #1.48. Thank you for posting the financials as I have not had a chance to check. I had set out the head of Komen in #1.29 but had not yet updated myself on the 'trickle' downers. I was aware they were top heavy in the 'administrative/compensation' percentage.
"And I'm curious, would you be willing to let us know what company you work for, or clue us in on the companies that have pulled the 6M in funding for Komen?"
You can ask all you want - but I don't consider myself 'the stunned and stupid one' as I have now identified Komen to be, to release names of the corporations that I have communicated with and have respect for, so that the zealots can then in their usual fashion when 'they don't like something/someone' or 'you don't agree that their way is the only way' or 'someone challeged an issue and won which pis*ed them off as 'it's their right', etc., so they then threathen in their 'kind' ways as they have displayed in various other issues -- such as death threats to name just one.
So - to simplify my answer for you about releasing names -- NO.
You so fit your screen name. The "free clinics" you refer to ARE Planned Parenthood, and they provide many more services -- including contraception to AVOID the necessity for an abortion. But you're just a troll, so why am I wasting my time?
So people are giving to Komen under the guise of breast cancer research and the money is making its way to planned parenthood to support abortions? This is why I give to no charities.
Larry you are 100% correct on that one, only the brain optional would believe that donating money to Breast Cancer foundation would be funding abortions! People LEARN TO THINK!!!!!!!!!! (i promise it doesnt hurt)
Larry, Dr Chrissy, really? You don't think I knew that...Whether the money was funding abortion or not is not relevant. PPH supports abortion and that's reason enough for me.
Good point ! I do believe I will double my annual Komen donation and send it to PP. Furthermore I am going to mail Komen their postage paid envelope EMPTY.
Sam-quite the lawbreaker. Nice ethics. But that's to be expected. Furthermore, if you get your facts straight, you will realize that LESS than 1% of rapes result in pregnancies.
Planned Parenthood does NOT provide MAMMOGRAMS. All PP does is MANUAL exams, which have been proven to be quite useless in catching breast cancer in the early stages.
So, you pro-aborts, quit spewing your half-truths/total falsehoods, and promote the facts. This is the 21st Century. We KNOW what is in the uterus. We see the infants on ultrasound.
Which brings up another subject-why is Planned Parenthood so against showing the women an ultrasound of their uterus before the abortion? Answer-because PP wants to deceive women into believing the 20th century lie that what is in their uterus is a "blob of tissue" duh.
How mature of you Sam, and you think they don't get it?
While it is true those donations went to breast screenings, and cutting off partnership was wrong, saying something so vulgar and filled with hate for a difference of opinion is evidence you " don't get it".
Mike - since you don't support any charities, I assume you are all for government providing all services for people who lack health insurance and are low income.
Yes and no. PP doesn't directly provide mammograms (as their clinics don't have the equipment); however, they do refer low income women AND PAY for mammograms for low income women. Essentially, they help ensure that low income women have access to mammograms in areas that they otherwise wouldn't have access to mammograms.
All PP does is MANUAL exams, which have been proven to be quite useless in catching breast cancer in the early stages.
Also not exactly an accurate statement. Studies have shown that MONTHLY self breast exams may not be necessary for every woman. However, MOST breast cancers are found via palpation - that leads one to request a mammogram and based on those results, maybe a biopsy. Even routine mammograms have a false positive rate of approximately 11%. Both exams have a place in women's health.
I sent our usual 'pink' donation to planned parenthood. They don't ask what your political views before helping. Guess the hundreds of millions the 'pinkies' receive are only for politicians.
And for their CEO who receives $500,000 in annual salary as well as bonuses, benefits, luxury travel all expenses paid, etc. I don't even *want* to know what her golden parachute looks like! Anyone still think that donation to Komen was really going towards finding a cure for breast cancer?
Actually Angie, the top 20 people in coporate office get paid a total of over $5 million a year, only use 11% of funding on research, buys stock from G.E. (Mamogram machines), Pharms like the one that makes Astrazeneca, and have a perfume out on the market with THEIR name on it which contains Cancer causing ingredients. They are in league WITH the major Pharms to 'continue' this fallacy of searching for a cure, since the Pharms make their profit from chemo and radiation treatments. Why isn't Komen being investigated?
I would most probably be dead today if not for my yearly screenings from PP when I was 21 and uninsured. I couldn't afford to go to a "regular" doctor back then, barely out of school, even working 60 hours a week at a restaurant. Planned Parenthood was the ONLY medical services I received for years. They were the ones who found my cancer while it was still Stage 1. Thankfully, I am able to afford insurance these days, but I know there are millions of people who are not as lucky as I am. I don't understand the incredible vitriol against an institution that does so much good for so many.
Shame on you Komen Foundation, you are acting against your own goals. Wearing a pink ribbon doesn't fight cancer, but getting exams and early diagnosis does.
"proamerica", you don't have to ask PP what their politics are, since they are Far Left. It's a killing machine. Although they try to canonize her, Margaret Sanger had three husbands and who knows how many lovers. Do you think she had any interest in children, those pesky little humans? PP, the Rockefeller, Ford, and Packard Foundations are all about keeping the numbers of blacks and browns down, without giving too much information. There is a conspiracy of very wealthy whites to control and limit brown and black birth internationally by those same organizations, with some "environmental" groups, such as Sierra Club involved. PP are the only organization that is not obligated to report rapes. I remember a case where a 14 year old girl was taken across state lines by her "boy-friend's" mother to get an abortion without the knowledge of the girl's parents A court approved it, although it was covering a Crime! The boy's mother was an accessory.
It's a killing machine. GeorgeLC Just like the far right-wing of the Republican party. Save a fetus at all costs, BUT, if you are old, disabled, just hurry up and die already.
I stopped giving money to them when they sued another group for using the words "the cure". I gave money to them because of my mother and sister (both passed from Breast cancer). This is why politicians and anti anything should stick to thier own thing!
Where has America gone...It would be important to get your facts right before you post. A very small amount of money that goes to PP goes toward abortion...like single digits. Don't be an azz.
Nor will I. Nor will I EVER wear the pink ribbon again. I am a breast cancer survivor. Using a woman's health for political gain is the lowest.
Just for the record, I am old enough to remember when abortions were not legal. Then the "rich" got D&C's in the local hospital done by the family doctor and the "poor" got butchered in back alleys.
It is the way of the world, holier than thou until it is their sweet girl that is pregnant, then a quiet trip to the doctor to fix it and back on the soapbox.
Patsy, you're being a "patsy" to PP, because Komen works for saving women's lives, while PP works to destroy children's lives and sometimes the psychological and mental health of women. Are you a "plant" for PP?
George, what on earth are you talking about? Planned Parenthood works to supply women with medical care. Much of their work, as the name implies, involves preventing unwanted pregnancies. If you oppose abortion as I think you do, why are you against an organization that prevents pregnancy and eliminates the need for abortion?
As for the claptrap about destroying the psy and mental health of women, come back and talk to me after YOU have had an unwanted pregnancy. Women are perfectly capable of making decisions about their own reproduction, and the law of the land says they have that right.
Why should others have to fund someone else's libido? The medical care that PP provides can be gotten at any free clinic. They are not providing anything special other than that they do abortions. If they were to separate the two, you would find that PP would get a lot more support.
Everyone knows the real controversy about PP is that it is a govt. funded abortion clinic. The majority of people go there for birth control, pregnancy tests and abortions. Rarely does it involve anything else. Stop lying to people thinking that they do all these other services.
Once again politics are playing a role where they have no business being. We can thank Karen Handle(director for the Komen Fond.) for that, her main goal is to shut down all Planned Parenthood Clinics.
Breast cancer is very serious, it has effected every family, rich or poor in some way. Today is a sad day when Komen has put politics first instead of saving a life.
Not for nothing, but Planned Parenthood calls it a donation "spike" because they know you won't be there next week, month, year. While you're at it, why don't you pick up the tax money they get?
Why should others have to fund someone else's libido?
Finally, the core argument comes out from the right. This is not about abortions, nor is it about contraception - it's about closeted, bigoted, unhappy, unfulfilled, non-sexual people resenting the fact that other people have, and enjoy, sex.
Keep telling yourself that Planned Parenthood uses government funding for abortions - it fits nicely with your belief system, doesn't it? It's neither legal nor true, but don't let pesky things such as facts get in your way.
Excuse me, but I need to go donate to an organization that actually cares for women - not money or political influence.
Unhappy may win today's prize for the most ridiculous post! And I quote:
"Why should others have to fund someone else's libido? The medical care that PP provides can be gotten at any free clinic."
Just where, exactly, do you think the money comes from to run "free" clinics?? The one lesson I will never forget from my highschool social studies teacher: There is no such thing as a free lunch. Nothing is free, Unhappy. The money still has to come from somewhere -- "others" still fund those services. Even if nurses and doctors volunteer their time (which is still considered a "cost," by the way -- an in-kind donation by the individual professional), you still have to cover the rental of the facility and the cost of equipment and supplies. If those things are given to the clinic, they are still called in-kind donations and cost the provider as surely as a monetary donation would have. "Free clinic!" Make me laugh!
WTF makes you geniuses think that your donation money was used for abortions? PP is required by law to use money earmarked for cancer screenings for, guess what? Cancer screenings. Is there some indication that the money was shuffled around to fund abortions?
All you're doing is supporting the spread of cancer. Well done.
PPH still needs money to survive and pay its employees and bills. Guarantee 100% of the SGK money does not go into Breast Cancer screenings and the like. If it's padding the pockets so PPH survives, it is wrong.
You don't have to prove that theory; it is well supported by facts. Just a little tiny bit of fact-finding will prove the theory. And, PP may not be the only place for breast screenings but it is one of the few that is easily accessible and affordable based on the resources you have.
It's why EVERYONE needs to be paying more taxes. Individuals are far too biased to ensure that needed services can be provided by legitimate non-profits.
Really, now this about everyone paying more taxes, we already worked the fisrt 3 months for free as that is the tiem it takes the average taxpaying american to earn enough from their jobs to pay their taxes... and you think we should pay more? Please!
What a crock! What do you call a charity that has a 70% over head? You call it a FOR PROFIT RIP OFF! You radical Right Christian's want a theocratic, small government yet you detest the theocratic government in Iran. You want to Mandate the government control a woman's body! Quit cherry picking from the Bible, either live by it all or shut the he## up.
The GOP coalition's agenda is all for government stepping away from supporting the citizens of this society. No funding for the less fortunate, no funding for healthcare, and caveat emptor because there are to be no regulations against predatory commercial practices. All of that, but, they want to state to intervene in our most private decisions relating to what happens in our bodies. Somehow, morality is still considered in the realm of the state.
What's even more ironic is that there is less than zero interest in helping care for the unwanted children born from their activism. They're content to let them grow up in, possibly, dismal conditions. And then if they manage to grow up they're happy to send them to war, Because, war isn't immoral, it's good for the economy.
jaggedd head you most likey did give a penny much less a dime!!!! your so funny a joke. i will add to make up for stupid people like you but dont go to komen for help go to the baby murderers.
Pine, Since you are in your bubble, let me enlighten you if possible. EVERY product that has a 'pink ribbon' on it, whther it is groceries, sports-licensed memorabilia, Refrigerator/car magnets etc., has a percentage of what is sold sent to said Company. THAT is where the 'dimes' comes from, joker. Now you can go back to watching your lowering-IQ-scandal-rag-made-for-tv Fox 'We never lie' Network which used to be called News.
my observation is its sounds like you're eating your own. These are both orgs that support women and now both could suffer. Nobody wins. I believe Komen.
PP could end it all by proving it doesn't use taxpayer money for abortions.
3 star, I believe there is something called the Hyde Act/Amendment that specifically states that NO federal taxpayer money goes to fund abortions. In other words, it is illegal to do so. Please everyone know our country's laws.
It is not a permanent law, rather it is a "rider" that, in various forms, has been routinely attached to annual appropriations bills since 1976. The Hyde Amendment applies only to funds allocated by the annual appropriations bill for the Department of Health and Human Services. It primarily affects Medicaid.
Komen won't be getting any money from me anymore, nor will I walk anywhere for them. Planned Parenthood in many cases is the only place some woman can get any type of gyn or breast exam, (NO I don't mean Mammogram). Is it also coincidental that Komen pulls the plug on planned parenthood at the same time Pfizer recalls the birth control pills? Something is afoul.
Sounds like everything worked out in the end. PP supporters were upset and donated more, offsetting Komen's withdrawal of funding. People who donate funds to breast cancer research now know that their money won't go towards killing babies.
No, it'll go toward suing smaller charities who use the "for the cure" tagline and toward paying the $500,000 annual salary of the CEO as well as all the salaries of the board members at Komen, instead. Way to go wing-nuts...at this rate we'll have Komen shut down in no time!
Not so unusual for Komen to make this choice. Do a little research on them. They sue anyone who attempts to use anything near "Race for the Cure". Like they OWN the phrase. Isn't it all about preventing, diagnosing and treating cancer? A cure would be nice too!
@JonMavrick -- it may shock people like Teresa to know that in essence, Komen does "own" the phrase "Race for the Cure" since they have trademarked it. They also "own" the use of the color pink when it comes to fundraising. But her point is apt and not far off the mark. Komen has filed trademark oppositions, which you probably know are like lawsuits, against more than a hundred smaller charities who do not have the legal funds or resources to fight Komen. As the article you cite states, it is important from a legal perspective to protect your trademarks, but it may be not so smart from a PR perspective. The main reason to file trademark oppositions is to prevent confusion in the marketplace or, in this case, among donors. Very few of the smaller charities would be confused with Komen -- in many case, it is quite clear that the funds are being raised to fight a different type of cancer all together. So why is Komen so aggressive? Because they are more like a big corporation than the woman-friendly, kindly charity that many think they are. Komen has developed into big business, making millions from licensing the use of their trademarked pink ribbon. And like any big corporation, they will fight anyone large or small, that they see may infringe on their ability to make money. Yet they license their pink ribbons indescriminately; it appears on many products that contain carcinogens or do not promote a healthy lifestyle.
So although Teresa may be incorrect, and Komen does indeed "own" the phrase (and the ubiquitous ribbon, and the color pink) she is definitely not far off the mark. I think people would be surprised to learn how much Komen spends in legal fees in trademark opposition, and how severely they have impacted the ability of smaller charities to raise funds for a good cause.
400K in donations to Planned Parenthood in 24 hours, WAY TO GO people!! In your wrinkled old face Komen i hope your conscience (if u have one) doesnt keep you awake at night
Yeah Komen! Now I can and will donate to your cancer research, because you do have a conscience. It is amazing to me that anyone could accuse those of us who object to ending the life of a child before it takes it's first breath as not having a conscience. THINK ABOUT IT! Pro-life is not anti-choice, women can do whatever they want with their bodies. But no one should have the right to take the life of an unborn baby simply because the beginning of that babies life was unplanned. The unborn baby is not the woman's body! I am pro-life and I can sleep very well at night.
neneroulo- This is not an attack. A few years ago, I had no insurance, and a lump in my breast. I was terrified. Absolutely terrified. Planned Parenthood saved my life, with Komens help. My daughter was able to find out she had cervical cancer with a screening from PP. She also had no insurance, and no ability to go to a private doctor, like some blessed people. So, for the poor and low income women, Planned Parenthood is a God send. Where in the world do you expect these ladies to go for womens health care? When there is NO insurance? Is your Dr. willing to open his practice to these women? No? Cause he demands payment? Are you willing to help these women for accessible health care? No? You'd think as women, we should band together to help each other, instead of laying judgment. I dont have a firm stance on abortion.I do know Id rather be seeing the children who are here, and help them from the abuse, rape, torture, neglect, murder they receive from parents who didnt want them. Everybody on the anti abortion train has conveniently forgot about them. And are not as rabid about their existence or their plight. .
Denying women coverage for cancer prevention and treatment is murder. Too bad for poor women, and of course, Mitt "isn't worried about the poor", as he blurted out earlier. At least he's honest.
Cassandra, you and your friends need to drop that phrase quickly, or, repeat all of it. Otherwise, you will look dishonest, because you are. Everyone knows that he said, "they(the poor) have safety nets in place, and we'll fix them as necessary." You are being set up by the right.
RickV - You are the one sounding dishonest. The "safety net" doesn't cover many things and the GOP has no interest in fixing it, only in eliminating it. Educate yourself.
RickV-I think Jon Stewart said it best on his show last night - the fact that somebody is in a net, or needs one (butterflies, fish, tight-rope walkers, poor people...), is never a good thing and obviously it means something has gone terribly wrong!!
Planned Parenthood does screening for breast cancer. Donating money to PP instead of the Komen Foundation will help more women who cannot afford to get their screenings elsewhere, so, NotFooledAnymore, we are not "biting our nose off to spite our face ". We would rather donate to an organization that does not operate solely within a religious and political bias. It is not your business what I believe in, nor do you, or anyone else have the right to impose either agenda on those who do not want it. It's highly doubtful that it's a coincidence that the vice president of Komen is Karen Handel, endorsed by Sara Palin, who was a gubernatorial candidate running on opposing abortion and vowing to defund Planned Parenthood. If you don't like Planned Parenthood, don't avail yourself of its services.
NotFooled (yeah, right) I can see by most of your postings that you have difficulty with getting things correct, but let me help your for future reference... The phrase is "cutting off one's nose to spite one's face". Not surprising you would get it wrong, though...it seems you right-wing whackos are getting just about everything wrong in your posts, here. Next time, try some research. Too much to ask, I know.
Who gave any of you the right to tell anyone what to do with their bodies?
I don't agree with abortion, it doesn't mean it's the wrong decision in every case. Until you live someones life do pretend to know what's best for them.
By the way I have mostly right leaning views and could care less about religion and it's hypocrisy.
I am not going to tell you when to put your bible down, so think of that next time you tell other people what to do with their own bodies.
You completely contradicted abby's statement. Not all religious people are nuts, and they are thinking for themselves. It's what they think you don't agree with.
1. Don't ask us for tax dollars to pay for your abortions.
2. The entity in the uterus is not "your body", he/she is a separate entity. Know your biology. This is the 21st century. Not the Middle Ages. Ultrasound shows what is in the uterus.
3. The time to say "hands of my body" is when you decide to participate in sexual intercourse, the one act designed to create new life.
4. Your immature name calling shows you have NO LOGICAL ARGUMENTS to offer.
1. There are quite a few things that I've paid for with my tax dollars that have directly and indirectly resulted in both the loss and extension of human life. I wish I had the ability to pick and choose(line item veto?) which items would get funded.
2. If religious supporters were really "pro-life", they would volunteer to not only raise and care for all of the children, but also provide care and living expenses for the mothers, including all her pregnancy-related medical expenses.
I know it is easier to brand them as sinners and let back-room butchers have ply their trade.
So give all your donation money, which is probably nothing, to the abortion clinics and hate and try to stop all funding to cure breast cancer if you like...
Koman decided to go with curing breast cancer and not abortions...Good enough for me. Especially since it's their money...
It's nice to know you holier than thou people are so against abortion,we have to save those "babies" you care so much about right?Well,at least until they're born that is,then they're just leaches on society because there's no one to take care of them except for our government.Of course then you complain about your tax dollars going to help these people survive, and when you see them begging for food and money on the street you pretend they're not there.Yes,lets save those "babies" so they can grow up to be poor and destitute and can be ignored.
No...they decided to go with the political wind while funding millions of dollars in lawsuits against any charity that uses the "for the cure" tag line they've trademarked and paying their CEO $500,000 in annual salary. Komen only spends about 17% of all the money they receive on funding a cure for breast cancer. The research has been well-documented repeatedly and the facts point to Komen being interested in nothing more than running a charity business.
Fact: Planned Parenthood allocates on 3% (that's three percent) of its funds to abortion services. And yes, people can choose to give or not give to whatever cause they please. But again, political pressure is brought to bear where none belongs. I love the advocates of individual rights and "government out of our life" who are more than willing to impose government control on women's rights. So many hypocrites.
you brought up an important point -- so many "conservatives" want the government to stay out of their lives BUT want the government to tell women what they can or cannot do with their own bodies. it's call hypocrisy.
Sorry, your stats are wrong. Planned Parenthood bundles their statistics to make it appear as if they are offering these health care services, when in reality 97.6% of the services they provide to pregnant mothers are abortions. Those are the facts.
Do a search regarding Planned Parenthood and "bundling statistics".
And guess what Lou, abortion is LEGAL...they are not breaking the law, they are providing a service to women whose lives would be profoundly affected by pregnancy...and whether that means the women's life is at risk, or the child she is carrying is not likely to survive or if she does not have the resources to care for a child, really it is none of YOUR business or mine...bundled statistics or not.
Lou, please quit making up crap in a lame attempt to support your views. What is wrong with people like you? Do you think because Rush and his ilk can just lie about everything it is OK? Do you think it is proper to lecture others on what is or isn't ethical when you just spew this garbage? Wow.
Lou - where did you pull the 97.6% number from? Some conspiracy theorist website?
You are clearly unaware that the biggest part of PP's services goes into Family Planning services namely contraception, that is intended to minimize the number of abortions that women resort to.
The right number is 3% - just slightly different than your "97.6%" (you sure about the decimal place?).
Lou7's - - you are obviously here to advertise something you have made up. Please take your advertising somewhere you might be appreciated. Trolls are deluded to think wasting time and space accomplishes something.
The backlash for Komen on this decision is amazing. Bravo for people standing up for Women's rights. Planned Parenthood found a lump on my sister's breast and they are the reason that she is here today. I will no longer support Komen in any form.
I'm shocked that Komen, who has supported women's health in such a way that has made an impact in our world would take this position in the every stupid battleground of abortion rights. Their public policy should be about breast health and ONLY breast health....they have allowed the right-winged coalitions to influence their decision-making processes, which will affect hundreds of women each month.
Actually, they didn't in this article. But it turns out that Komen just hired a rabid anti-abortion SVP, who had lost a recent run for office, in which she pledged repeatedly to do anything she could to end abortions. GoTP politicians are looking for every avenue they can to defund Planned Parenthood, and this SVP appears to have shoved her personal opinion up the SGKF's butt.
Too bad for Komen, but it seems to be a good thing for PP!!
The Republican senator investigating Planned Parenthood is REP. CLIFF STEARNS, from FLORIDA. Feel free to reach out to him with your feedback and comments. I know I will and it involves a certain finger on my hand. He is yet another pathetic excuse of a man sticking his nose in the right place for the wrong reason.
Thank you, PaleinPortland, for identifying the idiot representative who is investigating Planned Parenthood......now I know where to send letters of protest........
The young women of this country need to be very afraid. If the Religious Right has its way there will be NO such thing as birth control let alone a woman's right to choose. Make sure you vote or you will have no one to blame but yourself. And as a FORMER supporter of the Komen Foundation, all I can say is Susan G. Komen WOULD BE ASHAMED of them!
The foundation is following the law. If Planned Parenthood has nothing to hide this will be a temporary suspension of support. In the mean time it is good to see people step up to support a cause in which they believe. The question is why did it take this for those people to step up?
Temporary my foot! That idiot demanded 10 YEARS WORTH OF FINANCIAL RECORDS from Planned Parenthood. He has no intention of holding hearings on this anytime soon. It could be literally years before congress actually gets around to dealing with this "investigation" or should I say sham. In the meantime Komen withdraws millions of dollars of funding specifically earmarked for breast cancer screening for low income women. Make no mistake: a war has been declared on women and their rights in this country and Komen just signed on with the enemy.
AMEN!! I just worry that the young women who will be the ones to pay the ultimate penalty are not grasping what the Religious Right Zealots are a trying to take from them. Due your due diligence ladies.
sandiego1969. This is crap. The foundation isn't following the law by any stretch of the imagination. They are following Rep Cliff Stearns, who is being backed by anti-choice groups, as well as Komens new vice president Karen Handel, an abortion opponent who ran as a gubernatorial candidate on a platform which included defunding Planned Parenthood. There is no legitimate investigation by the Atty General, which there would be if anything was thought to be suspect. There isn't any real basis for this investigation by Stearns. There is much more to this political circus that we will no doubt hear about
Nixon was the first president who wanted to eradicate cancer. Under his administration $100 million was given to find a cure. Armound Hammer offered $1 million to the doctor who found a cure. 60 Minutes did a special: Two doctors were close to a cure. One Dr. was at Sloan Kettering, another in Texas. The two doctors were fired. 60 Minutes interviewed staff, Why: Because if they found a cure the research money would dry up, the the money was needed for RESEARCH, in many areas. They wouldn't have a job!
I had two sisters who died of cancer as well as the bumbling health care system we have. I do not give to cancer. In my opinion Komen wants more people to get cancer, and just think of all that research money. Give your money directly to Planned Parenthood. Responsible Life: A Beautiful Choice.
Bob, also the fact that Komen buys stock in Pharm companies who deal with Cancer drugs, in which a person with common sense would know, They aren't in a hurry to get a Cancer drug produced, there isn't a profit in it for them like Chemo and Radiation therapy are.
We're a secular society, so it's good to see the citizenry resist and counter efforts by religiously motivated groups to stymie research and take away women's rights. The world is plaqued by theocracies and we must not become one.
It's not about religious motivated groups or secularism..... it's about LIFE. Tell PPH to discontinue killing babies and they can have all the money thay want!!
You can't kill someone before they're born any more than you can kill them after they're dead. Inventing a camera small enough to stick up a womans crotch doesn't change that. Try thinking sometime.
No, you think. Just because it's in the womb, doesn't mean it isn't alive. It still has a heartbeat and a brain and it's still a human being. And you *are* killing it.
So all anyone has to do to cut off Komen Foundation funding is to launch an investigation of a recipient they don't like?
Sure, that's "fair and balanced". Puts you in great company, Komen.
(Ever heard of "innocent until proven guilty"? It's a quaint old American concept.)
Komen is done.
Everyone is moving to other organizations that provide similar support for breast cancer.
.
Guess where my money is not going this year and every year after this ?
I've been a supporter of Koman through walkers for years. That's all over. I'll refocus my donations to Planned Parenthood.
This is what happens when far right bigots make their way into an organization. They pollute the environment with their bible politics and divide people.
What a shame. I have previously never donated to planned parenthood. But I just did today.
Forget about think pink and the pink ribbon also
they had already sued another organization about breast cancer awareness
And the irony of all this is that grant money cannot go to anything other then what it was deisgnated for-in Komen's case breast exams/mammos.
Donations from the public however can be used for anything the organization sees fit.
I'm certain there are many more out there, like me, who will more than pick up the slack for those misguided individuals, such as yourself.
women have many issues regarding health, any withdrawel of funding is sad and I hope u can look ur mom in the eye
It is about women's health -- if you cannot risk a pregnancy because it is LIFE-THREATENING it is about protecting a woman's life. Of course, some folks don't care if a woman dies. Or is a woman's life worth less than a fetus?
". . . entirely individual human being."
That statement is what is ludicrous. An embryo is not/cannot be an 'entirely individual human being'.
rightiswrong must not have passed basic biology.
to right iswrong , planned parenthood refers does not perform u brainwashed idiot
People like you scare me. YOU are misguided. Truly
Hilton, there are lots of comments here. You might want to mention to whom it is you're writing! :o)
we live in a sad country, when so many of u guys/gals think anything that helps u is bad. unemployment insurance-get rid of it, welfare/foodstamps-get rid of it, and u wanna claim to know the mercy of Jesus Christ?
It's like the country is coming together to give these right-wing lunatics, Fox News, and the religious extremists a giant middle finger. Hearing about the spike in gifts has partially restored my faith in humanity.
However, I doubt they will get this simple message: MIND YOUR OWN F***ING BUSINESS AND STAY THE F*** OUT OF OUR BODIES, OUR BEDROOMS, AND OUR PERSONAL LIVES.
Put your money where your mouth is, like I did I just donated to pph.

Good. It's about time you pro-aborts start paying for your own abortions. No tax dollars for abortions!!!!
"Not intended to be a factual statement"
KFC is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them
Ford is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them
Bank of America is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them
American Airlines is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them
Caterpillar is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them
Nestle is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them
Egglands Best is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them
Yoplait is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them
Dell is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them
Major League Baseball is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them
Lowes is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them
Merck is under investigation...Komen takes $ from them
AND
ASCO is under investigation...Komen gives $ to them
AACR is under investigation...Komen gives $ to them
WHO is under investigation...Komen gives $ to them
In fact EVERY corporate partner checked except Hallmark Cards Stores was under some sort of investigation and every organization they gave grants to was as well.
Planned Parenthood is the largest provider of reproductive health services in the United States, which include contraceptives and abortions, among other services.[3][4] Contraception accounts for 35% of PPFA's total services and abortions account for 3%; PPFA conducts roughly 300,000 abortions each year.[5][6][7]
I just wonder what Susan Komen herself would think of what is being done in her name to attack such a good organization.
Oh for the love of Pete, (or money perhaps)
This mess has a familiar ring to it.......Shakespeare would have understood...........
"Much Ado"
Cheers
meede1,

meede1, no voice is small!
Meede1,
It still doesn't change the fact that it is Komen's choice/decision.
Which God obviously invented for greed. ;]
Too much?
Cheers hun
Stop babbling and get off the drugs. We are not talking about MADD! If you can't tell the difference then you shouldn't even be on this site.
P.S. You are not allowed to up your own comments.
FYI.. .the breast cancer screenings performed at Planned Parenthood are not mammograms, or MRIs, or any other type of expensive procedure.
Total Salary/Benefits Paid by Organization- $50,730,864
I have had to go to Planned Parenthood in the past, when I had little money. I was not going for an abortion, I have never been pregnant ever. I went for basic women's medical care. I also saw many pregnant woman there who were getting some much needed pre-natal care. PP does not do abortions, they only refer woman to them. Goverment funds can not be used for abortion, per the Hyde admentment, of more than 30 years ago. The only reason the Republicon congress is going after PP if because he is anti-abortion, anti-choice reglious zealot.
LOL -- Planned Parenthood is here to stay! Eat that, all you right wing-nuts....
Bullsh!t. It makes the grass grow green! Cow sh!t. It does the same d@mn thing! Bat sh!t is much like rat sh!t, and all of that sh!t reminds me of you.
No one is questioning their rights.
I will boycott companies that run fundraisers for this non profit as well as no longer donate my time and service to help this organization.
PLEASE DO NOT SEND ME EMAILS THIS YEAR!!!!!
when you do I'm going to tell them what I think in response!!!!!
Greg-621390
Great post at #1.48. Thank you for posting the financials as I have not had a chance to check. I had set out the head of Komen in #1.29 but had not yet updated myself on the 'trickle' downers. I was aware they were top heavy in the 'administrative/compensation' percentage.
Again -- thank you.
#1.42 cdahl:
So - to simplify my answer for you about releasing names -- NO.
unhappy --
You so fit your screen name.
Good point, Mike.
Complete bull@!$%# that the money I donated to Susan G. Komen Foundation was forwarded on to something I despise.
The donations did NOT "support abortion."
The money was used for health screenings.
I have a feeling you 'give to no charities' because you're a complete tool.
Some of the money the government confiscates from you goes to planned parenthood....what's the difference?
Larry you are 100% correct on that one, only the brain optional would believe that donating money to Breast Cancer foundation would be funding abortions! People LEARN TO THINK!!!!!!!!!! (i promise it doesnt hurt)
It is hard to find any charity that takes food stamps. Just sayin'
Larry, Dr Chrissy, really? You don't think I knew that...Whether the money was funding abortion or not is not relevant. PPH supports abortion and that's reason enough for me.
All Komen grant money to PP was strictly designated for breast cancer screening.
General donations can be spent as PP sees fit.
. . . and Mike and Steve are just about as stupid as they are hypocritical -- not that the two are mutually exclusive quite often.
Good point ! I do believe I will double my annual Komen donation and send it to PP. Furthermore I am going to mail Komen their postage paid envelope EMPTY.
now that is being pro-active my friend!
Steve let me come rape your wife and get her pregnant. Then we will see how much you don't support abortion......
Sorry to be so graphic, but some people just don't get it.
While it is true those donations went to breast screenings, and cutting off partnership was wrong, saying something so vulgar and filled with hate for a difference of opinion is evidence you " don't get it".
you probably dont have any money
Mike - since you don't support any charities, I assume you are all for government providing all services for people who lack health insurance and are low income.
Yes and no. PP doesn't directly provide mammograms (as their clinics don't have the equipment); however, they do refer low income women AND PAY for mammograms for low income women. Essentially, they help ensure that low income women have access to mammograms in areas that they otherwise wouldn't have access to mammograms.
Umm, NO. If you're going to make a stand, at least know where you stand before demonstrating your foot is in your mouth.
George, what exactly is the relevance of Margaret Sanger having had 3 husbands? Newt had 3 wives. What's the big deal?
I will never contribute to Koman again.
It's your prerogative to give to an organization that takes life and not give to an organization that saves lives...
Because we all know it's more important to have abortion clinics than it is to cure breast cancer...
DM-about 3% to be exact-and it was never the grant money from Komen.
True, but in MANY areas PP IS the "free clinic".
@Unhappy:
GeorgeLC, you are suspended for a day for violating rule # 1 of the Code of Honor.
WTF makes you geniuses think that your donation money was used for abortions? PP is required by law to use money earmarked for cancer screenings for, guess what? Cancer screenings. Is there some indication that the money was shuffled around to fund abortions?
All you're doing is supporting the spread of cancer. Well done.
You'll have to prove that theory....genius.
PP isn't the only place to get breast screening. May be the only place to get a screening and an abortion on the same day...
Do your research. I have done mine and you would be suprised what you will find.
I am disgusted with the Komen Foundation for buckling under to such pressure.
Cowardly wimps...
I'm proud of them for not buckling under the radical extremist liberal, we'll crush you if you don't give to us pressure...
I commend the Komen Foundation. I will now support them. I haven't because I was aware of their connection with Planned Parenthood.
NotFooled - not fooled by logic, you only understand threats? You, sir (or madam), are a nut-job.
Indeed Tina, and shame on the religious right for trying to use breast cancer as a weapon in their obsession with taking away abortion rights.
Komen did not buckle under pressure, it started it!
Lou7777777
Somehow, I can't see this as Christian.
Wait, you are giving an example of the free market picking up for the slack in government funding?
No way this must be a lie, has to be. The only way things get done is by government funding.
That's the last dime Komen will get from me!!
jaggedd head you most likey did give a penny much less a dime!!!! your so funny a joke. i will add to make up for stupid people like you but dont go to komen for help go to the baby murderers.
BabyBoomer48
You do understand that the Hyde act is a rider?
It is not a permanent law, rather it is a "rider" that, in various forms, has been routinely attached to annual appropriations bills since 1976. The Hyde Amendment applies only to funds allocated by the annual appropriations bill for the Department of Health and Human Services. It primarily affects Medicaid.
pine, you are suspended for a day for violating rule # 1 of the Code of Honor.
170,000 screenings out the door to please the new right wing President at Komens.
Not political? what a crock.
Teresa
You are entitled to your own opinion not your own facts.
http://battermanlaw.com/blog/2011/01/race-for-the-cure-between-public-relations-and-trademark-law/
All the donations to PP will fade away very very soon. Just a knee jerk reaction.
Although, if you want to keep your abortions going, you'd better start paying for them with your own money-not our tax dollars.
dr chrissy - over 1 billion in donations, you have a ways to go
And are not as rabid about their existence or their plight. .
Way to go. Go ahead and support murder.
Women saying they will no longer donate money to Komen????
Sort of like biting off your nose despite your face isn't it.
Watch how quickly they change their minds when they are diagnosed with breast cancer.
Do you realise Komen Foundation is NOT the only breast cancer screening provider/program/service in America?
I have no insurance. So you will see me at Planned Parenthood.
There are plenty other charities for breast cancer research
Whose taking away their rights. Who says Koman has to fund what anyone does with their bodies if they don't agree with it???
I donate to the charities of my choice and beliefs. Not who liberals say I should donate to.
Your free donate to whoever you like.
I never said anyone took away their rights.
I said: Who gave any of you the right to tell anyone what to do with their bodies?
some people can't stand it if other people think and act for themselves.... some people want to tell you what to think and how to live....
Bingo, Abby!
Your statement describes the Religious Right Nut Cases to a T. (Actually ALL Religious Right people are nut cases.....)
Jean,
You completely contradicted abby's statement.
1. Tax dollars haven't paid for a single pregnancy termination procedure.
2. Until the fetus is born, it is not a separate entity in either a legal or physiological sense.
3. You're deflecting.
4. You're deflecting again.
lou7777777, #16.6....
Having abortion clinics is way more important than curing breast cancer...
Until you have breast cancer...
having cancer clinics is way more important than stopping abortions
Until you have been raped or are a victim of incest
The research has been well-documented repeatedly and the facts point to Komen being interested in nothing more than running a charity business.
dr chrissy one is a choice one isn't . I hope you're not a doctor of medicine
there were 42,000 abortions in new york city last year. Selective abortions. not because of rape or incest
thats called choice
Choice - it's the law.
Thanks for spelling out the 3%... I almost thought you meant .03%.
Never directly apologized for my mistake a few weeks ago. I'm sorry it was my mistake.
you brought up an important point -- so many "conservatives" want the government to stay out of their lives BUT want the government to tell women what they can or cannot do with their own bodies. it's call hypocrisy.
Right on Abby, the irony is blinding yet they refuse to see it
All politics is hypocrisy,
As I pointed out earlier, the same people who are against the free market are getting a first hand experience of how the free market works.
Government chooses to put pressure on a company and cancel funding. The very same day donations have poured in to the tune of $600,000.
Most of the time people only agree with something when it benefits their own ideology. It's not easy to take a step back and examine the real truth.
Don't you realize abortions are under 3% of what Planned Parenthood does???
The backlash for Komen on this decision is amazing. Bravo for people standing up for Women's rights. Planned Parenthood found a lump on my sister's breast and they are the reason that she is here today. I will no longer support Komen in any form.
I'm shocked that Komen, who has supported women's health in such a way that has made an impact in our world would take this position in the every stupid battleground of abortion rights. Their public policy should be about breast health and ONLY breast health....they have allowed the right-winged coalitions to influence their decision-making processes, which will affect hundreds of women each month.
I now question the true mission of Komen.
It used to be a respected organization, too. It's a shame, but in the end they brought this on themselves.
where in the article did they say they were against abortions?
Is he by chance a Tea Bagger?
Heck, I often see little evidence of a heart OR a brain in today's Republicans, does that mean I can kill them, because they obviously aren't alive?
Of course not, they're out of the womb, and as such ARE PEOPLE.
Whereas still in the womb, a fetus is still a part of a woman's body.
is it possible for the Komen foundation to donate to an organization that does not kill children?
then services to the public can still be met and no more babies will die
Sure, it's called Planned Parenthood!
