Should big companies be able to get swine flu shots for employees if many people are still waiting?

Some of New York City's largest employers — including Wall Street firms like Goldman Sachs and big universities — have started receiving doses of the much-in-demand swine flu vaccine for their at-risk employees.

Yes. They're supposed to only give them out to high-risk employees and that's a good way to get vaccines to those who need them most.

Considering how many times the financial industry has shown that it can't be trusted, I would insist that their "at risk" employees be vaccinated at the same level as we mere mortals must. This is yet another case of how the "elite" feel they are not bound by the rules and how little they care for the common good.

Basically, they're saying only the people with college degrees and that MAKE ENOUGH MONEY TO MISS WORK have the right to get vaccinated. And if ANYONE believes they're trustworthy enough to limit it to truly only the high risk employees (or the employee's high risk family members), I've got a bridge for sale.

My hubs is in college and my 6 yr old in public school. I'm GOING to get sick with something this season, I guess I just have to pray it's ONLY a cold so that they have to ALLOW me to work. I'm a contractor, and I don't have enough paid time off to cover if I catch the flu without AT LEAST the vaccine to help make sure it's not as severe.

I DO believe in "taking one for the team" to let my sister with Asthma get her vaccine first.

TACK ON a rule that anyone vaccinated due to being high risk is AUTOMATICALLY reported to their Insurance provider, and MAYBE we won't see all of the CEOs and Board Members claiming autoimmune disorders or asthma at the risk of losing their coverage.

When is everyone going to realize that the USA is now the USC--United States of Corporations. They own everything including our politicians. Of course they're going to get vaccinated first. They probably own the drug company who makes the vaccine. The average American can die in the streets for all they care. Their limosine will just drive around you.  Yes, I know cynical view, but the Greed is rampant in this country and I'm really tired of it.  The CEO for United Health Care makes more in one hour than I make in a year. While I don't mind people making more than me, that's way excessive and its all on the backs of average good Americans. We've become a third world country and just haven't realized it yet. Just another example.

Yep, we are the newest third world country with a first world ruling class comprised of wealthy corporations who command the politicians (political K-Street whores) to do their bidding. Whether it is Federal, state or local politicians (I mean K-Street whores) it doesn't matter. They are traded just like any other commodity to gain business advantage.

I pity any American who still thinks they have a stake in this country. The only time they need you is when they run out of cannon fodder for the latest war to protect their corporate masters' investments.

All these Teabaggers make me sick too. What a bunch of tools of the wealthy right wingers. Americans for Prosperity, really? Whose prosperity? Dick Armey and his buddies, that's who. But, since they are a "non-profit" they don't have to tell us who funds Freedom Works, AFP or any of the other Teabagger groups. Wake up, you are being lied to.

These institutions followed the rules in place for all companies, were proactive in anticipating the health needs of their employees, and should not be vilified for receiving vaccine for their employees. If any entity has egg on their face, it's our government who deemed the H1N1 so troublesome that the CDC had to solely manage the vaccine production and distribution . Welcome to the "public option".

This has nothing to do with the public option. It has nothing to do with the CDC's management of the process. It has to do with the haves believing that there is nothing they should not have or have to wait for. Any high risk person working in any of the companies are now as equally deserving of the first vaccinations as any other high risk person and no more. What do you see as proactive when what you suggest is putting yourself ahead of people who need and deserve the vaccine more? Higher status? More importance? Greater deserving? You have a distorted view of the significance of each individual person as well as your own place in the whole of humanity.

I wonder what impact my comment could possibly have. I have not a speck of trust that the right thing will be done; i.e., follow the high risk guidelines for all people and then allow the rest of the people to be vaccinated as quantities allow. Unfortunately, if those of us high risk people don't get vaccinated appropriately we'll likely be dead and what can be done to make it right at that point? This is not at the federal government level. It's in the local level lines waiting for vaccines where non-high risk people are getting the vaccine just because they are there and have been waiting. Those at the local level who have power will direct the decision making about who gets what and when the supply is gone, and there is no idea when the next supply will be available or where, the high risk people are just plain up a creek. The whole operation is simply too big to be handled openly and fairly and all the people who have no cares about being honest are taking advantage while those who play by the rules get only the left overs or nothing at all.

I work for a Federal agency in DC and we have a few doses of the vaccine--but it is only for pregnant women.

A young high risk 10 year old boy recently died from H1N1 in the western section of NY state. Why? Because this area has had a difficult time getting the flu vaccine...Yet once again MONEY talks and those that believe themselves more important than a child get the vaccine.

I don't buy for a nano second that the companies will only give to high risk employees and frankly I am disgusted that this vaccine was allowed to be distributed to companies and coporations before medical centers, pediatricians and Ob/Gyns have been given the vaccine in order to do there jobs....prevent illness and death.

Once again, the greed of wallsreet rears its' ugly head over the well being of the "average" American.

                          Shame on them!

Don't think its the greed of Wall Street (although they are a bunch of unethical hyenas - sorry hyenas to compare you to them as that is very insulting to you guys)...anyway the problem is with this administration and our government overall. We have allowed Congress to exempt themselves from many of the laws they enact that affect all of our lives and impact adversely on many of them. Same thing with their health care - they have exempted themselves from the program. One question only and I would love to hear someone answer it - why? If they think it is so good for the rest of us, why isn't it good enough for them (okay everyone who knows about their health care plan can stop laughing now).

Do you believe that everyone in Congress is going to get this shot before pregnant women, at risk children, etc., etc.? If you don't believe they will, you are living in la la land - after all we are talking about the anointed of America - the untouchables, the mainly lawyers who fight all tort reform and fight all term limits.

You want to get our country back, where hard work actually gets you somewhere, where people cannot get mortgages unless they actually qualify for them, then have the taxpayers bail them out (you know the ones who felt they couldn't afford a house, so didn't go for the subprimes offered - often times called the honest people), where executive salaries are not 800% higher than the average worker, where we can take pride in being Americans and not have an administration that apologizes to all the dictators and avowed enemies of ours, where fraud, malfeasance and outright theft in the billions and billions of dollars takes place in every government run program. There is an answer - term limits - this was never meant to be a lifetime position and term limits is our only way to get out of the hell government has pushed us into. Let's take back Congress and have a government the remembers President Abraham Lincoln's speech at Gettysburg - "and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth." No one can now say it is for, by or of the people...instead our country is run by a mere 535 arrogant people - with 43% lawyers - and you wonder why there is no term limits and why they with impunity exempt themselves from the health care bill

I hate to point this out to those who like to blame Obama for every little thing, but those of us who are unfortunate enough to live in Las Vegas can tell you that the casino CEO's insure that their staff receive the standard yearly flu vaccine even during years that shortages insured that seniors stood in line for hours at the health clinic hoping to get the vaccine which might save their lives. The CEO's received their vaccine shipments even though the news organizations told the public to allow the needy to receive them first. The double standard that insures that the wealthy and their interests receive first priority for everything has been going on for quite some time and well before Obama was elected. As a matter of fact, it's a side product of capitalism. Those with the capital thrive, even at the expense of others.

It sounds like the rich get what they want. the seniors are not last in line these days . try being a disabled veteran who a senior must use the vamc in washington. the vamc might start a line in about end of nov. for maybe dec.

Really? You actually think the Congressional Democrats are responsible for a flu vaccine shortage? I don't recall anyone at the CDC being on the 2008 ballot. You're seriously blaming a current problem on a yet-to-be-enacted healthcare plan? Tell me - is ignorance really bliss?

yes, while they block healthcare for the people and take billions in fun money from the Bush Tax breaks and they take tax money from the "prop up the companies that screw you but can't be allowed to fail fund". Why not give them the vaccine that we paid the drug companies to expedite with our tax dollars? It is the conservative way. They get everything the old fashioned way....They steal it.

By the way, I am an elderly high risk category heart patient. My doctor still hasn't got the vaccine. Might as well give it to some young Wall Steeter who already stole my retirement. BTW It isn't Obama's fault you freakin' idiots. Get a life.

I think big companies should get swine flu shots for employees every though many still wait. Any chance we have for limiting as many people as possible from getting the swine flu is a good thing. Beside the people that work for big companies are the ones who come into contact with alot of people. For example, I work for a company that is involve with different people from day to day everyday. If I stated to become sick while at work from being in contact with customers who may have the swine flu; that is a chance of me spreading to others than a chance for me not to spread if I would have had the shot.

Markita, I think that your comment shows the reason why companies should not be allowed to distribute the H1N1 vaccine.

Just because you come in contact with people does not give you the right to say that you should have priority in receiving the vaccine. Everyone comes in contact with numerous people unless they stay at home.

If you are talking about hospitals, clinics and others that come in contact with people who are actually sick then you would be correct in your assumption, but the way I read your post you do not.

So you my friend are just another one of the many who think about your own welfare above others who actually are in need of the vaccine. Shame on you!!!!!

They are also the ones that layoff people in the thousands... much faster than the economy can absorb. Many of those "lazy welfare trash" are Professionals, managers and technicians that spent 16 - 18 years, 80K - 100K getting educated so they could get those jobs.

Now they are out of work and in many cases - unlikely to EVER get a job again. No small business owner will hire a Phd to run his register or drive a fork lift - no matter if he will accept the wages.

Facts is Facts - true, but you have to look at the whole picture to understand what you are looking at.

Its a Forest... not, just a tree.
